      Well, thank you, Jeff! We really appreciate your kind words.
      The 4 jaw chuck you see in my videos is a Vicmarc VM120. I have had very good success with that chuck and would recommend it to anyone.
      Here's a link to one source for it - www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/100/449/Vicmarc-VM120-Chuck-w-Jaws

    Hi Kerry
    Thank you for making such a great and informative video, I got into woodturning earlier this year and I have similar tools and the techniques you explained will be very helpful.
    A lot of videos the people make at high speed so while they can be interesting they are not very informative like yours was, so thank you from England

    Mr. Harrison, I have had a pretty full compliment of your carbide tools for a few years now and have had a lot of fun using them. After getting back into turning after a very long hiatus, the one thing that stands out is how easy they are to use. The shear tool is a bit trickier but just takes some experimenting. The one thing that you pointed out is sometimes tear out can be a challenge, so when I saw your discussion on speed I was intrigued. I have learned faster is your friend with slow feed on the tool. Much the same as metal working. I wondered if your new plastic tools, which appear to be negative rake scrapers help with tear out as well. Do those fit into existing tool holders or do they require their own special holders? I plan to try them soon! BTW I think your IPM calculation might be off by the factor of PI, and are those recommended speeds applicable but HSS and carbide? The engineer in me just being curious. Love the Simple Tool products!!

    Just received the STH and handle today, quite impressed with it I bought the full size probably a little overkill for my Laguna 12 16 Lathe did a little practice with it today on some mystery hardwood I had in the shop came out nice. I will be purchasing more as I like the handle interchangeability. I'm a 67-year-old beginner the turning arena question is what tool next? I thinking the 90 degree.

      Glad to hear it's working well for you. Thank you so much for your purchase. The 90 degree detailer is a very useful tool that you will use often. As it happens I just posted a new video highlighting one use for it. Here's a link if you're interested. th-cam.com/video/4ARvyEjEdiA/w-d-xo.html

    Yes you sure can. The Simple Shear Cutting Finisher can be use to turn and hollow the entire vessel if desired, or just used as a finishing tool as shown in this video.

    When using the 90 degree detailer to try and do the bowl it seems to catch . Any ideas on what am I doing wrong , thanks for you time

    • @harrisonshideawayii4634
      @harrisonshideawayii4634 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best practice is to only cut on one side of the point as much as possible. Catches seem to more likely with plunging straight into the work piece. This causes cutting to occur on both sides of the point simultaneously. As this type of cut gets deeper the likelihood of a catch increases because the cutter and chips become trapped in a slot. To avoid this, cut on one side of the point, then the other side widening the slot as you work your way into the project. This is a great way to remove a lot of material quickly when roughing out the inside of a bowl.

    Hello: I just received my set Mid Size Carbides and need to say WOW, First off I was surprised to see how you folks shipped them, TOTALLY BLEW ME AWAY, I was figuring on just a box with the tools wrapped in bubble plastic, but when I opened the box, I knew right then that they are going to be QUALITY TOOLS. The feel of the handle, and the weight is AWESOME, and the HARD CASE/PROTECTOR is just great too. I just played with them on a piece of “fire wood” and let me tell you what, I LOVE THE WAY THEY RUN, SO SMOOTH AND EASY TO CONTROL, and for a first time turner (only been turning for 3 weeks) I feel at ease compared to a “standard gouge”, THEY JUST FEEL SAFE(R) IN MY HAND AND ON THE REST. I must say, that I WILL be dealing with you as my experience in the hobby of turning grows, and the need for quality tools does too.
    Thank you for going above and beyond customer service.
    Sincerely
    Paul Flores

    can you use the Mid Size Package of 4 Carbide Simple Woodturning Tools too do bowls?

    • @KerryHarrison-Woodturning
      @KerryHarrison-Woodturning  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeffrey Kumjian Yes you sure can. I recommend the mid size tools for turnings 6" in diameter or less. The full size tools are a better choice if you will be doing projects larger then that.

    I purchases a set of the basic 3 and love them all. Wonderful simple easy now I get to spend more time turning and less time sharpening. Yes I will use the original lathe tools but these get the job moving a lot quicker. Thanks for a great video and super tools.

    Just purchased your Package of 7. Can't wait to get going on a project. Thank you for the great video instruction.
    You blew my engineering mind with your speed formula. Circumference = pi x diameter. At 6.5 inch diameter, 440.6 rpm = 9,000 in/min. At 4" - 716 rpm. At 2", 1,432 rpm. At 6.5 inch diameter, 294 rpm = 6,000 in/min. At 4" - 477 rpm. At 2", 955 rpm.
