I don't think the fear is irrational, as when you first use the skew you tend to get some pretty violent catches, and some of us still do, too often. but, all that said it is a truly versatile tool, and well worth the effort and practice, to get to grips with. I had no idea you kept the skew at such an angle as you worked down your piece of wood! That would explain why I've had such troubles using the skew and why I dang near broke my fingers it felt like when I would get a catch! Thanks for explaining Mike!

Hi Mike, As you probably noticed, novice wood turner that I am, I began using the easy wood tools for doing my turnings, and for most things they work great. The other day, though I was turning a piece of red palm and no matter how sharp the tip was I could not get a nice finish with the tool. So, I tried the skew chisel and it surprised me how smooth the finish is compared to what, basically, is a scrapper. Then I recalled your beginners series, and here I am, watching again a video that I watched even before getting my lathe. Excellent information and well explained, after my first try and your video, I feel much more confident now and will try the skew more often. Thank you so much! Cheers! Daniel

Mike Waldt Hi Mike! When I was a little kid, both my grandpas showed me to feel comfortable around tools. They had very different styles, my mom's dad was meticulous, systematic, step by step kind of guy, slow in doing everything, but he always finished what he started, and he showed me the importance of planning ahead, my dad's dad was adventurous, he tackled ANY project no matter how difficult it was, rarely he had a plan before starting, but nothing daunted him and could improvise with any imaginable thing a tools or a system. I think I absorbed so much from them that my elected field of study and work for many years was engineering. So, you may see me comfortable with my tools but the fact is that I just began turning 8 months ago, so the material that you have been posting in your beginners series was for me a great resource. Hi Mike, I have just finished watching all of your beginner videos and Id just like to say thanks, they are very educational. I have never done woodturning in the past although I have completed a lot of wood work including wood carving which I really enjoy. After watching your videos and many others that you reccomended I have taken the plunge and bought a lathe, only a small one but can't wait to get started, I have to make room in my garage for it now so that means a lot of work before I can get started including laying a base and taking delivery of a new summer house for her indoors, (love her to bits). I reckon about 4-6 weeks before I can get started, I will have a go at posting videos in the future but Im not that technically minded with things like that, its took me an age to get this far. keep the great videos coming I really enjoy watching you work and the things you create it really inspires me, speak to you soon.

I've learned quite a bit from your videos so far. this is very new to me, haven't even bought a lathe yet actually. am getting ready to though. I've been a manual lathe operator for the oil and gas industry all of my adult life so needless to say I've manipulated metals to do what I want. now it's woods turn haha. can't wait to learn more and start turning some wood. you're a awesome teacher
Great advice Mike and congratulations on your tutorials. A+ for the teacher. The skew was difficult for me when I started turning all those years back but I was determined to make it my friend. I spent a week just using the skew. Well now I use it without a worry and love the finish it gives. Of course it also saves a fortune on sandpaper. Those new to turning should take note that we all have gone through the fear of using such tools but as said by our other friends practice will pay off. After all if I can do it anyone can. Just watching this video frightens hell out of me. I’m waiting for it to kick back.As a young man I was an apprentice mounding machinists so I’m used to whirling cutters and hand sharpening them, but I cannot get my mind a round the scraper chisel you changed. I guess it’s the slicing motion that does it. Never the less, I appreciate your demonstration so I shall try it. As I have just purchased a lathe I know I must try out and master ( if I can ) all of the chisels. Thank you for that I will watch out for more videos. I just noticed it’s five years old.oops.

Another great tutorial Mike. I was put off using the skew by other turners advising me on how dangerous it is but I've since learnt that it's only dangerous if used incorrectly. Your tutorial certainly shows that it's nothing to be scared of. Cheers, Ben

Hello Mike, thanks for another informative tutorial. Well I've finally bit the bullet and finally started to try and learn to turn, I've watched so many videos of you great teachers but they'll not be fruitful unless I get practicing. I've decided, may be a bit ambitiously to jump in the deep end and am try to learn how to use the skew. I keep my sessions short for three reasons 1. concentration 2. get abit dissapointed with too many catches and spirals but best of all 3. when I get a really good run with the skew I'll pack up while I'm ahead and feeling good LOL! Your tips are always useful but the best one you've taught me that I've seen in no other video, is when you mentioned the white knuckle grip and having a little fear hanging on to the tool for dear life itself, Well you were bang on!! exactly what I was doing to a point that my grip hand ached - honestly. So after watching this video twice went for another go - deep breath - relax - a much lighter hold rather than grip and very steady small cuts, bingo! I'm still not at all good but the difference in my approach has made such a difference i just loved my last session - so a BIG thank you to you! (Oh - and our mate Afshin ) cheers, Tony

I’m just getting into turning. Having a brittle bone disease, there’s a physical cost of pain, and risk of fracturing from doing things such as going down a stair case, walking, bending over, and so on. But with turning, I enjoy it so much that I’m happy to pay the cost. Other things that were worth the cost, was traveling, going to places where I didn’t know anybody, or even speak the language. But, now in my 30s I don’t have the energy. I did have other things I enjoyed, but the cost was too high. This is probably shallow - but I’m hoping to get to a point that I can make a profit from woodworking, not for the sake of making money. But to become finically independent. But, even if I don’t get to that point, just having something that I genuinely enjoy has been massive. Thank you for making these videos, they’ve been very very helpful.

Up till now I have viewed the skew as a very effective cure for incipient constipation - works every time. Great tutorial Mike...Having just started relearning to turn in my new workshop, I have made a goblet. My next project was a Box. I decided to use my only skew chisel which is an oval one, to clean up the outside. I had an horrendous catch. I manage to salvage the box but I have decided to put a standard skew on my shopping list. Practice makes perfect. Thank you Mike.

I tried that today, and you're absolutely right. So smooth, any sandpaper will only dull the shine; even better than 1200 grit. This is a great way to make a long even taper, as in making a taper reamer for bench legs---not workbench, but sitting bench.

Hi Mike. I've tried out this fluted parting tool and am very pleased. It's precise, fast and gives a great clean cut. I'd recommend this type of tool for most uses apart from using one handed when it might be a bit awkward. Cheers Graham.
Thank you for the video. I've just started practicing with the skew, and have found switching hands very helpful when changing directions. I hadn't figured out what was causing the 'spiral catches' I was experiencing, but now I know what I should be looking for and adjusting.

Thank you! We bought our son a lathe for Christmas and I am starting to get a taste for it (we had a lathe when I was at school but I was never taught how to turn). After this and one or two other videos I am beginning to get a handle on the skew chisel and managed to get through a few exercises today with both planing and peeling cuts, and no catches. I fear this is a bug that is going to bite. :)
Thank you Mike for this fabulous final of your 'Beginners Guide' series of videos. I think the skew, as one of the most scary (better said mysterious) tools in our arsenal, got a little more revealed by your video. I learned that I haven't been wrong all the time I used my skew as you mentioned cutting in the right direction, using your left hand. Other than you, I think this is a more natural grip to the skew than only using your right hand in either direction, you just don't have to think about what you are doing. I always try to have contact with my body to the handle which adds more control or in my case some weight to the tool. Looking forward to some fresh summer projects from you my friend. Good video Mike. There were lots of good tips,, especially advising us to turn left-handed and to video ourselves to see what we do wrong. I am a Lefty but, when I started turning, I noticed almost everything was geared for Righties, so, I learned right-handed. When I decided to try using my left hand it was like I'd only just noticed another arm on that side of my body because I just couldn't get it to work. However, time and practice have made me pretty ambidextrous at the lathe and it sure makes turning easier. Best Wishes, Brendan.

I've learned quite a bit from your videos so far. this is very new to me, haven't even bought a lathe yet actually. am getting ready to though. I've been a manual lathe operator for the oil and gas industry all of my adult life so needless to say I've manipulated metals to do what I want. now it's woods turn haha. can't wait to learn more and start turning some wood. you're a awesome teacher

The skew was difficult for me when I started turning all those years back but I was determined to make it my friend. I spent a week just using the skew. Well now I use it without a worry and love the finish it gives. Of course it also saves a fortune on sandpaper. Those new to turning should take note that we all have gone through the fear of using such tools but as said by our other friends practice will pay off. After all if I can do it anyone can.

Just watching this video frightens hell out of me. I’m waiting for it to kick back.As a young man I was an apprentice mounding machinists so I’m used to whirling cutters and hand sharpening them, but I cannot get my mind a round the scraper chisel you changed. I guess it’s the slicing motion that does it. Never the less, I appreciate your demonstration so I shall try it. As I have just purchased a lathe I know I must try out and master ( if I can ) all of the chisels. Thank you for that I will watch out for more videos. I just noticed it’s five years old.oops.

I was put off using the skew by other turners advising me on how dangerous it is but I've since learnt that it's only dangerous if used incorrectly. Your tutorial certainly shows that it's nothing to be scared of.

Hello Mike, thanks for another informative tutorial. Well I've finally bit the bullet and finally started to try and learn to turn, I've watched so many videos of you great teachers but they'll not be fruitful unless I get practicing. I've decided, may be a bit ambitiously to jump in the deep end and am try to learn how to use the skew. I keep my sessions short for three reasons 1. concentration 2. get abit dissapointed with too many catches and spirals but best of all 3. when I get a really good run with the skew I'll pack up while I'm ahead and feeling good LOL! Your tips are always useful but the best one you've taught me that I've seen in no other video, is when you mentioned the white knuckle grip and having a little fear hanging on to the tool for dear life itself, Well you were bang on!! exactly what I was doing to a point that my grip hand ached - honestly. So after watching this video twice went for another go - deep breath - relax - a much lighter hold rather than grip and very steady small cuts, bingo! I'm still not at all good but the difference in my approach has made such a difference i just loved my last session - so a BIG thank you to you! (Oh - and our mate Afshin ) cheers, Tony

I’m just getting into turning. Having a brittle bone disease, there’s a physical cost of pain, and risk of fracturing from doing things such as going down a stair case, walking, bending over, and so on.
But with turning, I enjoy it so much that I’m happy to pay the cost.
Other things that were worth the cost, was traveling, going to places where I didn’t know anybody, or even speak the language. But, now in my 30s I don’t have the energy. I did have other things I enjoyed, but the cost was too high.
This is probably shallow - but I’m hoping to get to a point that I can make a profit from woodworking, not for the sake of making money. But to become finically independent.
But, even if I don’t get to that point, just having something that I genuinely enjoy has been massive.

Great tutorial Mike...Having just started relearning to turn in my new workshop, I have made a goblet. My next project was a Box. I decided to use my only skew chisel which is an oval one, to clean up the outside. I had an horrendous catch. I manage to salvage the box but I have decided to put a standard skew on my shopping list. Practice makes perfect. Thank you Mike.

I tried that today, and you're absolutely right. So smooth, any sandpaper will only dull the shine; even better than 1200 grit. This is a great way to make a long even taper, as in making a taper reamer for bench legs---not workbench, but sitting bench.

Hi Mike. I've tried out this fluted parting tool and am very pleased. It's precise, fast and gives a great clean cut. I'd recommend this type of tool for most uses apart from using one handed when it might be a bit awkward. Cheers Graham.

Thank you for the video. I've just started practicing with the skew, and have found switching hands very helpful when changing directions. I hadn't figured out what was causing the 'spiral catches' I was experiencing, but now I know what I should be looking for and adjusting.

Thank you! We bought our son a lathe for Christmas and I am starting to get a taste for it (we had a lathe when I was at school but I was never taught how to turn). After this and one or two other videos I am beginning to get a handle on the skew chisel and managed to get through a few exercises today with both planing and peeling cuts, and no catches. I fear this is a bug that is going to bite. :)

I think the skew, as one of the most scary (better said mysterious) tools in our arsenal, got a little more revealed by your video.
I learned that I haven't been wrong all the time I used my skew as you mentioned cutting in the right direction, using your left hand. Other than you, I think this is a more natural grip to the skew than only using your right hand in either direction, you just don't have to think about what you are doing. I always try to have contact with my body to the handle which adds more control or in my case some weight to the tool.

Good video Mike. There were lots of good tips,, especially advising us to turn left-handed and to video ourselves to see what we do wrong. I am a Lefty but, when I started turning, I noticed almost everything was geared for Righties, so, I learned right-handed. When I decided to try using my left hand it was like I'd only just noticed another arm on that side of my body because I just couldn't get it to work. However, time and practice have made me pretty ambidextrous at the lathe and it sure makes turning easier.
