Can I Drive This Terrifyingly Sketchy 1992 Dodge D350 "Ramp Truck" Home? (Towing My New Project Car)

- See Tom's video on the truck here: • This 1992 Dodge D350 C...
Tom with @rocketresto has a habit of dragging home junk that I really want. The latest example of that is this 1992 Dodge D350. With an intercooled Cummins 5.9 under the hood, this truck should be reliable and a willing performer for hundreds of thousands of miles to come - in theory, anyway... Unfortunately, this thing sat in a field for a lot of years, while the brakes rusted over and the tires literally rotted to pieces. But I'd really like to drive this thing home, with my upcoming turbo slant six project 1963 Plymouth Valiant on the bed. So today, let's do everything totally wrong and out of order, by putting a car on the bed, and then changing all six tires, before finally taking it for a test drive and learning... things...
Sketchy is at least half the fun. Will it make it????? Oh the thrill of the unknown. Was that a State Trooper? Did he notice? Likely bigger fish to fry. Which steer tire will blow first? Will it be the guard rail 150' drop off side or the head on with an 18 wheeler side? Such excitement. Such thrills!!!
Just the kind of excitement I need in life 😅
Is it wrong that I read this with Waylon Jennings narrative voice in my head?
You certainly like to take chances don't you 😂
@@Anthony-nw5zv I love to live dangerously
No Jamie lives vicariouslylea and would never do anything stupid.😢
In 1993 I bought a new, two tone, white over silver 12V Cummins D250 Club cab with captains seats (best seats EVER) and I traded it in 10 years later. I still miss ti.
I had a ‘93 D350 club cab five speed dually briefly. Man, that was a great truck. But I needed a real back seat for my newborn daughter - so I got my first second gen.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Same problem here. My son quickly became too big for it. The third gen has been serving us well since then though.
One of the best looking trucks ever made. That grille is automotive design perfection
Agreed!!!
Whats more amazing to me is I remember working at the dealer and doing new car prep on these :( It seems like 6 months ago not 34 years ago...I was real young then!
U don’t want the truck I’ll take it. I know that truck is fantastic.
It certainly will be with some important improvements!
Very entertaining. I'm glad you didn't die. lol
Who says a dead man can't own a truck? The Ghostbusters can make contact if you need a question answered.
Can't wait to see part two....thanks👍
I had a 1995 single cab 12 valve Cummins. Those Turbos are indestructible. Great Engines.I took out the CAT OUT STRAIGHT PIPE. The truck just whisled. Had a great sound. 👍
Happy Saturday to me. Always a good time for DDG.
Sweet truck , Cummins dodge Cummins . My two M880,s were rusted completely away , but not many over here in England , so the D got saved and the W got a unimog chassis & a Cummins 💚
I remember someone I knew back in 1997 had a Red 1992 Ram 350 1 ton with the Cummins diesel with the spread axle 4x4 I thought it was the greatest thing I ever seen. Been a fan ever since..this Truck made me the Dodge fan I am today..😂😂
That looked like quite the experience! Smart move not to drive it home, the brakes would have really gone south on that long of a trip. But not to worry, the bees will be waiting for you when you start this project again. Yikes!
The blue led dash in the r/t truck looks great! ALL HAIL THE CUMMINS!
I love my first gen..most of the time. Of course I’ve fought all of those things you are currently fighting..all new steering including red head steering gear and borgeson shaft..huge difference, also added a steering box brace I picked off a ramcharger in a junkyard.
That’s a cool truck! The front end reminds me of a truck that the Scranton PA post office had. It was a regular cab 1991/92 ram 1500 8 foot bed. I saw them using it regularly until about 2 years ago. It was in pristine condition. I’m guessing it was sold at a government auction or something.
So glad to see record these sketchy misadventures. It will help the NTSB determine one day how it all ended 😂😂😂😂
I know, I’m really making their job easy.
Bwaaahhhaaaa😂😂😂😂😂 " The tires are old enuff to drink " 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing this little 'adventure' Jamie. The only thing that surprised me, is the low payload limit for a truck that size 😮 Locking brakes, whether rusty calipers or constricted hoses is practically a given, sitting that long.
I actually don’t know the total payload the truck can handle. I know the total gross weight is over 10,000 pounds, but I don’t know how high it is. Either way, it is a D350, which is a “one ton” classification. That doesn’t mean it can only carry one ton. It is supposed to have overload springs to help carry all that weight. For some reason they removed the hangars for those, which is contributing to the sag in the rear.
And I hope it was very obvious that I was not at all surprised by the brake issues. I was hoping they would just magically be ok, but all logic and previous experience indicated they would not.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yeah, you did make mention of it, a few times. Watching, I too was hoping it'd clear itself up, by some magical means.
LE stands for Luxury Edition......soak in the LUXURY!!!
So much friggin' luxuriousness in this truck. Haha.
Amazing how "luxury" has evolved!
Now the Luxury Edition would be a base work truck.
Doesn't help no helper spring perches. Good thing that 12 valve is holding the front end down. Air bags would be good, dump the air to load or unload. Of course brakes would be much betterer.
Yep. I really don’t know why they pulled the helper pads. Doesn’t seem like a good idea to me…
My old brain is getting fuzzy. I thought a one ton truck could haul two tons of material?
Thanks for your awesome video!
It’s not a hard and fast rule just by the one ton rating. Gross weight ratings vary by model. I haven’t found the gross return for this one yet but I know from the door sticker it’s over 10k.
you are right . the look of a double stack is cool. if you run out of fuel. take the mini off and finish the trip. never say can't.
I told Tom that if the truck broke, that was my plan 😅
Best videos on the TH-cams!!!!
Awe, thanks!
Great trucks
The 12v Cummins. So indestructible it'll outlive every body & frame it inhabits
All them test drives lined up woulda got ya home lol... fun times, BTDT.
Fun hanging out, thanks again.
Forty miles short and there’s a freeway in the way for 20 of it - but I thought the same thing. Haha.

The best cure for square tires is a good burnout.
It doesn’t work as well for front tires 😅
@@DeadDodgeGaragejust have to put them on the back for a burnout 😂
Hahahaha the Silver Springs song lyrics 😂
You like that?? 😅
Dominant the globe! Fix the brakes and the overdrive. Flatbeds are cool.
You have more faith in the ratchet straps than I ever would. Thank goodness a tire did not blow and you escaped possible injury along with the car. Great video showing what not to do is very appreciated, but please do not take risks for our entertainment unless you are sure you can get away with it.
I know what I can get away with. But with this much weight, I need actually functional brakes. What’s wrong with ratchet straps? That’s all I use to strap down cars. Good ones, obviously.
Used to use chains and binders, now it's ratchet straps, way more better!
I experienced death wobble in my 1997 Grand Cherokee. That definitely falls under the "I need a change of underwear" category.
Awesome truck. The 72-93 is a great truck and there are tons of parts and still has a cummins. Same dash as my 92 Ramcharger. I dont think it would take too much to make that truck decent. Tires, brakes and box. And springs. And tank. And....😀 I think the O/D trans switch is broken or has no power
It is broken - and the computer is toast anyway. I was told that none of the factory stuff works, and that one is the toggles engaged the OD manually. Doesn’t seem to though.
Good call I’m not driving at home little sketchy nice truck though
Had a couple of 4dors , (a fav), oz boot is beta (AP5) imo but jeez i luv that 2door. Is beautiful ,no ?
The 12V Cummins is THE BEST engine ever made!
What other engine really only has ONE FLAW, killer dowel pin, that RARELY even surfaces?
If you had to take an engine through the end of the World???
It'll run on just about any oil source you can find, INCLUDING the oil in transformers, you know that stuff in those barrels up on power poles......that are everywhere.
Every other vehicle on the road, or OFF, is a source of fuel, more diesel, gear oil, ATF, motor oil. AND everything that flies as well.
You don't need a battery if you have a manual transmission. The fuel shot of can me manually operated, or ran with a cable.
And IDI Phord might be acceptable but a distant second. A Cummins can even do "gas" stuff....like be QUICK!
Damn right!
15:30 I thought you were going to say, "You can't beat me on the hill. YOU CAN"T BEAT ME ON THE HILL." 😊Actually , you may have done that one in another video.
(Dennis Weaver in Steven Spielberg movie) My brother likes to do , "My car's not POWERFUL enough!" when referring to A bodies.
I didn’t do that, but I think I’ve done “COME ON, CAR!!”
Beavertail!
I understand the wheels are lug centering. I used to install 2 tapered nuts on the wheel then install the rest of the nuts. when they are tightened, replace the tapered with the standard nuts.
BTW they are supposed to be ridiculously tight...300 foot pounds WOW!
300?! Wow… I had assumed the spec was in the 140-160 neighborhood. I gave them the old break bar treatment anyway.
Hell Yeah!
DDG, the perfect amount of fun and failure 😂
I believe they call that seized caliper fixer tool, a BFH.
Death Wobble:
First thing first, replace the axle side rubber Track Bar Bushing with a two piece urethane one. You don't actually need to remove it from the vehicle (like I did on my Jeep XJ).
Of course, don't let that delay the brake job.
These don’t have a track bar. It’s not even a solid axle truck - which is where death wobble is usually found.
The 4wds don't have a track bar either.
I fixed my WJ with a steering stabilizer.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Sorry, didn't see this until you mentioned you replied.
According to one of my Army buddies, LE stands for "Lectric Everything" 😂
Ahhhhh, see that makes sense. I thought it was "Like Everything." Haha.
More first gen cummins content, please. Love those trucks. I need that grille for mine. And that is a 1993 model, BTW. At least the speedometer it has in it came from a 1993 truck. The older ones had a separate window for the tenths position on the trip odometer. And there is no lockup converter in the first gen diesel trucks. The gassers had em, but the diesels did not get lockup converters until 1994 with the 47rh transmission. And more than likely the problem with your overdrive is the throttle position sensor. They always fail. Replace it with a potentiometer from Geno's Garage. Could also be caused by a faulty transmission temperature sensor (currently unavailable, you'll have to jumper it. This shifts the trans out of overdrive when the trans fluid temp reaches 275º), a faulty coolant temperature sensor (also unavailable, jumper it. This keeps the trans from going into overdrive when the coolant temp is below 60º), a bad ground in the overdrive on/off switch on the dash (I see your dash button is all smashed up, so that could be the problem. It's the red button to the left of the cargo light button), the PCM could be bad (but you'd have charging problems too most likely), overdrive solenoid, or the brake light switch. Or any of the grounds for any of those sensors. Pretty sure those are the only things that would keep it from going into o/d, aside from internal transmission problems. Oh yeah, could also be the vehicle speed sensor. Even if the speedo is working accurately, it can still cause problems with the o/d. They are another common failure point. My speedo was dead on accurate with my GPS, but still kept popping out of o/d. Replaced it with a new NAPA one, and now it's off by a few mph, but the o/d works. and the odometer is still dead accurate GPS verified, even though the speedo is off. Odd. Gotta love an old mopar.
Well, first off, coming right up. Haha. Second off, this is definitely a ‘92 truck, so I’ll guess the cluster has been changed. I used to know that difference. Haha. Third, I knew the early overdrives did not have a lockup, but this appeared to have the three wire transmission connector instead of two? I’ll have to look again. The computer is bad. It has an external regulator added to make it charge. The computer is sitting flat next to the battery and is full of leaves, mud and rat crap, so… yeah, we could have some issues there. I did inspect the transmission temp sensor wiring and TPS wiring, as well as the solenoid control wiring and saw no obvious faults. But have done no sensor or circuit tests yet. The big problem here is that I can’t ask the guy who owned the truck what was what, because he’s no longer winning with us. But I was told that the two switches were supposed to be OD and lockup control, so I was working on the assumption they were right and it had lockup. And given the trash computer, manual control makes good enough sense. I will get to the bottom of all of this soon.
You're right about the TC lock up.
You can always put a swept line cab and doghouse on the 92 and your choice of the stick shift transmission and eliminate the automatic overdrive issues and put air bags on it and really make it something neat, and it is not like you can't use the 92 cab and doghouse you have several of those trucks or replace the white cab truck and sell it with tom and both get something out of it
Wow, you hit exactly what I want to do on the head. Haha. I talk about all of that in my next video!
Jamie, I have that same year 1992 truck and the same interior. I have the dreaded "goo" steering wheel problem.
And the steering wheels from other years don't interchange. I can wash off the goo with soap, but it comes back almost immediately.
I put a cover over the wheel but it only partly covers the grip surface since it is fatter than the cover. And the spokes goo up, also. And, with the cover, it makes the wheel fatter than ever.
I prefer a thin grip steering wheel like you'd find on, say, a 65 or 68 Chrysler 300, but they won't fit and of course they won't since the 92 is an air bag type.
I only found one similar steering wheel for sale on line and the seller stated that it had the "goo". If you find one with no goo, late me know.
Perhaps they are more likely to be found in cooler cloudier areas.
My 92 tortured my back until I put a seat from an E body in place of the stock bucket seat. The bolsters in the sides of the factory buckets cut into my back, and I am not really "wide bodied" either.
The kidney killing harsh ride of the d350 rear suspension is still a problem since I drove it very lightly loaded. And my overload stops were removed when I got it. A previous owner put air bags in, but I doubt they helped even before they wasted away. Air bag PLUS the main rear leafs, not "in place of".
Grooooss… I didn’t notice any goo on this one. I’m not giving it up though. Haha.
You are a braver person than me 😊
I had a seized caliber, even the death wobble happened a couple of times. I put a new caliber and still the same. Come to find out it was the old and slightly swollen rubber brake hoses.
Yep. That’s why I will be replacing them at the same time.
Those aluminum lace wheels on the Valiant look like the ones off an early Fox Body sedan. I had a pair of those and i gave them away to a co worker because they either had the wrong bolt circle diameter or the wrong hub diameter or both to fit any of my Mopars. He wasn't even grateful to get them. I should have kept them. Nowadays, I would have tried to "modify" them to fit my cars.
They’re neat because they’re 5x4”. I’ve never seen another set of them in that pattern.
The only way I feel comfortable living and traveling in my 1984 B350 is knowing it’s old Mopar. It wS super sketchy and pretty much white knuckles driving before I fixed it.
Take it up to 80 mph you with get rid of all the vibration
It really didn’t want to go 80…
A pickup with a car hauler body is a disaster in the making when new. When ancient …. Even better.
Perfect!
I’m pretty sure that truck is dangerous 😮 👍🏻🇦🇺.
No OD? Could be a post toastied capacitor in ECU. When you do the brakes, notice those too small for Cummins duty lower ball joints and give them some grease, they’ll be thankfull.
Oh for sure. I’m well familiar with Cummins ball joint problems… the PCM is full of mud and tree pieces. The added on classic style voltage regulator was a good clue something is amiss. I was told one of those switches activated the OD manually, and that made sense to me - but it doesn’t work.
I had the same brake problem recently with my 2000 Durango. We took off the brake hose and put a vice grip on it. I drove it home 2 hours on the highway that way. I never had a better brake pedal and no pull. Did I mention it happened on the left front wheel while I was towing a car trailer?
Oh wow. I strongly considered the vice grip technique. The problem is, if there’s ever a time you need four working brakes, it’s when you have a car on the back. Trailer brakes aren’t an option… and especially after the right side started doing it. I can’t vice grip both 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage I was surprised it didn't pull and the brake pedal was solid. I had an empty trailer on the back. I couldn't find a decent VW Beetle to buy, if you can believe that, so I came back empty. The next day it was all redone. I was luck to have my buddy with me. He happens to own a brake and suspension shop.
DUDE, you can actually sing!

Wow what a steaming pile. It is entertaining to watch you risk life and limb. For what reason is still not entirely clear. Many years ago I did that kinda shit. Because I had extremely limited resources. Be careful out there man.
LE must be luxury edition LOL
Yeah… I don’t think so 😅
Ah, I saw that when I was over at Rocket getting parts on Thu. I touched the Valiant, am I blessed or something? Thinking about it, probably "or something" 😅😅
Yeahhhh... I'm really going to have to say "or something" on that one. Figures, I must have missed you by a few hours. I had to run up to Everett for a truck load of shop stuff and random car parts for some reason.
@@DeadDodgeGarage 😂😂 ya, I suspect you're right.
I was there 11:30-12 or so.. Tom and crew were unloading a trailer of goodies. Next time!
Where did you get that Wurth air pressure guage? Wurth is a Woodworking supply house kinda crazy to see that brand in a mechanics shop.
Wurth makes a bunch of automotive oriented stuff actually. We use their rattle can paint - it’s about the best around. They also have brake cleaner, although we’re pretty sure it’s the same stuff sold by many other brands with their sticker slapped on it.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yup its pretty much the same thing on the wood working side rebranded products and tools. I just did some googling cause I was curious. Kinda seems like they are a mega corp like Bosch, or Kohler, or Honda. They have their hands in a lot of different businesses.

Yes i own a red 1988 version of this truck w/ 360 4 spd.
There you go! 😅
You guys need a sponsor to supply some gravel in a Bad way-
We brought in like five dump trailer loads last fall.
I forgot to tell you or Colin, weather here has been the same as there.
I haven't looked over all the comments but it looks to me that the upper ball joint is slopping around
It may well be. That’s what it felt like. But I didn’t notice that in the video I took. On the white truck, the upper control arm bushings are nonexistent…
If you do something stupid, be sure to film it - LOL!
So true 😅
IF it were a club cab, I would say extend the frame and the bed and use it as a ramp truck.
But I don't like driving the "first gens" in standard cab. Maybe you can "mix and match".
But a ramp truck is not really needed for the occasional tow since you have trailers and so many trucks that can haul them, even your daily drivers.
I fit in them ok. I had a single cab service body truck that was my main squeeze for a whole. Ultimately, what I want is a crew cab truck with diesel power, a stick shift, and the ability to haul a car and a camper, or one car on the truck and one on the trailer. Either of those configurations should fly under any weigh station requirements. But there’s no doubt that the whole time I’m driving whatever truck I put together, I will be thinking about how much nicer my third gen with a trailer is to drive.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I read your comment on how the blue Power Wagon was surprisingly not harsh. Maybe because they are half tons, long wheel base. I found the same thing on my W100. But my D350 is harsh. I never owned a third gen, but I missed my second gen when I drove the D350.
I have days kinda like this
That’s sketchy even for me lol
Are you saying the overdrive and lock up TC are inoperative, or the truck did not come with them? I'm guessing inoperative. Because mine came with them and 3.54 gears. If you had a three speed, you got 3.07 approximate rear axle with the diesel and that is not a good combo. But I thought all 92's had the the OD trans. I see that the previous owner put switches on to control the overdrive and the lock up.
That isn't a bad idea if they work. There is a factory switch for the OD which forces it off though it can not force it "on".
Yes, I am saying it came with them and they do not work, and that the owner apparently added switches to control both, which also don’t work. I haven’t gotten to the bottom of that yet. I am familiar with the factory OD cancel switch (broken in this case,) and with how things are *supposed* to work - which would be my preference.
Is that steering column factory? The ignition switch and column looks like the 94 thru 98 ones
I can't speak for the 92's but 93's used the "later" column. It's very wierd and if you have to replace ignition key/lock/switches, order the 94 parts.
@@kart70 I see, I just had a buddy that had a few 94 and on Dodges and that column and ignition looked familiar. Just interesting how changes were made over the years
Very similar, but it’s definitely original.

Did you see the clip I took of steering linkage because I thought exactly that? I didn’t see any play anywhere but in the box itself.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yes I did. The linkage is worn out bro. Been there done that, many times. The death wobble sucks. (steering linkage)
P.S you cant just fix one part. It`s called a worn out front end. You have to change it all. js.

Dont let that get you down. Its just some parts.

Trucks can reach a higher level of sketchy. I've allegedly seen floor jacks burst seals and even cylinders under overload. Some steel and a welder could help the bed, the rest may need more :-)
I have some ideas there. Haha.
Just a bit sketchy. :)
Do you have any video without rain.... ? 😁
This one *almost* didn't have rain... almost

Looks more like a flatbed than a ramp truck.
So you didn’t watch the video then
So much to unpack here. So let's hit the high spots. One that will buff right out😂. Second is Washington state patrol dot. Now if minnesota pulled ya over you would be as we say a stone on the side of the road. There is so many violations that he would have your autograph 473 times. You might get to see how cuffs feel. That whole dead guy thing is haunting as much as death wobble and optional smoking brakes. The approved spark retardant fuel filler neck. What filler neck, no problem. Tires that have more cracks than the grand canyon, it will be fine. Calling this sketchy is like calling me handsome. It's so much worse. Bed boards are optional watch your step. Bed length it's to short son. At least that's what she said. You need wheelie bars. The only thing fitting is the pos car on the pos truck matches and they look like they belong. Like a criminal and a jail cell. However this is not your worst idea. I could name several. There is a truck like this in a field here and oddly enough it has a tractor on the bed. So it's taller and has 5k lbs cargo. So just think you can haul your dorf tractor for tractor pulls. Now remember the worst idea is the one where people die. It will be fine.😢 no really😅 oh I would avoid the local constablitory at all costs on the way home. Call the funeral home and reserve a slab and a room.😊
Oh it’s not thaaaaaat bad…I mean it’s pretty bad.
Is it safe to call this truck a "survivor"? I think so, but it's an angry survivor. It likes to make Cummins noises, but it really gets pissed when asked to go down the road.
West Coast Hilljacks
LOL @ "the emergency brake"isn't "".
A new low point of sketch for this channel. But also maybe high point.
I’ve seriously put a *ridiculous* amount of effort into reducing that truck’s sketch level… but we’ll always have this video to remember it by!
ebrakes are allways just not. Untill you almost kill a family like i almost did yesterday. 86 short bed gravel road around a corner going like 40ish and rear line blew. Yeah good thing ive had tons of practice drifting corners on gravel in these trucks or else i would have smacked a sidebyside. Next up on the repair list ebrake cables and maybe just maybe a limited slip for easier gravel drifting.

Those trucks were great shipping containers for those Cummins engines 👍
Uhhhhh huh. Lol.
Still see A LOT of them on the road, just getting MORE valuable everyday!
There's 6 of us in my family, we have 4 First Gens. and 3 Second Gens.
NEVER been stranded in any of them, one totalled out a Bronco, drove home, $6,000 later at a body shop, good as new. Got hit dead on the driver's side front fender/axle.
I'd give Phord a body strength advantage but NOT GM. Own/owned lots of all the US brands.
@@jeffhutchins7048 I rarely see any first gen’s or older around here anymore, they just rusted away too bad in Minnesota. Always liked that body style! I had a 79 powerwagon that I spent 5 years restoring, there was nothing else like it around here and people just loved it anywhere I went 👍
@minnesotatomcat We have A LOT of rain but not any road salt. A little bit of thawing chemical.
ALSO, starting in '81 Dodge started galvanizing the truck bodies.
Jamie and I have the same climate. He's in Western Washington, I'm in Western Oregon.
There's a lot of first gen. Rams here....well Cummins powered anyway.
It's not a ramp truck LoL 😅
I’ll go ahead and guess you didn’t make it to the 2:30 mark where I said… literally exactly that. And I’ll also guess you didn’t notice that I put “Ramp Truck” in quotes… because it ain’t
..of course you can! - its not more sh*t than anything else you drive..
How dare you, sir? *HOW DARE YOU?!*
@@DeadDodgeGarage .. i love you more than that old fart, Uncle Tony..
Ramp truck 101. That is not a "Ramp truck." Ramp trucks actually have a ramp that is part of the rear bed. But, whatever. 🤓
Diiiiiiiid you watch the video and listen to me say like exactly that, or not so much?
