I'm Building A Classic Styled Drag Racer! "Garbage Can 'Cuda" 273 Engine Build Details, And More

  • This is the Garbage Can 'Cuda. It's a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda with a 1966 Dodge Dart front end that has lived multiple interesting lives. It's been a drag racer and a rowdy daily driver, and has been well abused through all of that. I have a vision for this car that looks a lot like the sort of thing you'd see at a SEGA race. I've talked about this project in various videos and livestreams over the last year or more, but I've never actually gone over my entire plan for the car - let alone start on it. So today, all (ok, some) of that changes. Do you want to build a spicy 273 LA V8? Hopefully this video is a good place to start. Have you previously built a spicy 273? Hopefully you'll drop in the comment section and pitch in your two cents as I finalize my plan for this one.
    If you want to see more on this car, check out my new playlist called "The Garbage Can 'Cuda" for the full story to this point.

    Not a ‘Cuda. It’s a Barracuda. ‘Cuda is not a nickname for a Barracuda, it’s a separate model name.

      I KNOW
      But 1) Barracudas were colloquially known as ‘Cudas BEFORE the ‘Cuda model existed, and still are, despite the ever-present whining on the internet. And most importantly 2) “Garbage Can Barracuda” does not have the same catchy alliteration as Garbage Can ‘Cuda.
      YES, IT IS ALSO A NICKNAME. There is zero point in being pedantic about this. People call Barracudas ‘Cudas all the time as shorthand, therefore it is indeed a nickname, separate from and unrelated to the official existence of the ‘Cuda.
      Did you know that ‘Cuda was a performance package in 1969? It was not its own distinct model until the BS vin distinction with the E-body in 1970. I know. You are talking to someone who has worked on many different Barracudas and ‘Cudas, including a Hemi ‘Cuda.
      Was I expecting this comment? Yeah. Welcome to the internet.

      As someone old enough to have been around when the Barracudas came out, I remember calling them "Cudas". Just like they called Mustangs "Stangs" and Corvettes "Vettes". You need to get over yourself.

    Good day eh from Canada ! I built a 273 for my 67 barracuda. Love it! I worked in a machine shop at the time so took a few liberties. The basic build is the flat top cast pistons, final comp. ratio 9 to 1. Used hydraulic 340 cam. 429 intake 440 lift I think way too small but it was free! I decked the block to achieve 040 quench. Polished the piston tops and combustion chambers to reflect heat back into itself. Prevent detonation etc. balanced the rods and pistons. But not the rotating assembly. The heads are 273 ones. I installed hardened ex seats and put new intake seats in. Raised the seats back into the chamber. I also used a radius cutter to unshroud the valves to match to the cyl bore. 273 adjustable rockers. My own gasket match and porting to clean things up swap meet edelbrock dual plane and a 600 cfm Holley netted me 216 rear wheel hp on a mustang chassis Dyno. Which should be close to 260 flywheel. I have an a833 in it as well. My 2 cents. I would use the 273 heads always. Use modern magnum or ls valves turned down to fit if needed. Use the stock beehive valve springs from magnum or ls. Maybe w2 rockers. Fill the push rod hole and relocate. Jb weld the intake runners and get them to match the heads. 108 lsa cam with 470 ish lift. Nothing radicle for duration consult David vizard on cam! When I fished machining the combustion chambers they looked similar to the 302 castings. Instal OD transmission 309 first gear ratio into your trans. Super fun project ahead for you!

    I agree with your thinking. I built a 65 Plymouth Valient Signet with a 273. Tips would be to think RPM for staying in its power zone, gasket match the heads to headers, cam and spring it to rev high. The 273 and 340 were set up well to run fast without shame from the factory in performance versions. My goal for mine was to screech the tires on takeoff, I never raced it but I did make my goal of smoking tires. It started as I got it as an oil burning two barrel intake motor with a two barrel to four barrel adapter and four barrel. I still have that carb adapter, not much demand for one of those. The motor was a slug. The 65 had a different angle the intake bolted to the heads than the rest of the following years so it took me some time and luck to find a 65 four barrel intake for that 273. I could have went with a set of heads and intake off something else but I had already redone the heads out of necessity. After the intake and above mentioned the car jumped around pretty well. It was capable of winning some races but I had a fast drag car already so it was built to run peppy on the streets and it got decent gas mileage. Good luck.

    Great project! I raced a 65 Dart Charger with the 273 Hi Po engine. It had a 904 torqflight with manual valve body. 4.88 gears in a 8-3/4" rear end. Fenderwell headers. Stock 235HP with a Offenhouser manifold with my Themoquad carb off my 71Demon 340. It ran Formula Stock and held the National Record in AHRA at 14.50s. Beat quite a few Roadrunners on the street. They all thought it was a 340 because of the thermoquad. Great car! Raced a lot of 340's in Super Stock too. Lot's of Records and trophies too. Good luck on your car. This was back around 1973. You just do what makes you happy. I like where you are going with this. You have lots of options. It's a shame you weren't around back in the 60s and 70s. You would have loved it. But the upside to that is you are still young. Back when I was a kid in the early 60s we used to put automotive stickers on our bikes. If we could get them. When I started driving and messing with cars in the 70s it was always cool to put the stickers on your rear windows from stuff you installed on your car. You never used stickers from stuff you didn't have. That was a punk move and was not cool. And of course street racing was a way of life for us. One thing you're missing is the high octane gas. Our high compression engines and the 105-108 octane leaded gas we had at the pump would make some impressive power. I ran a 12:1 360 in my 74 challenger with racing pistons and lots other goodies. That car was violence on wheels.

Duration 268/276 228/235 @ .050. ,.429/.444 lift. 44 degree overlap. Sounds small , but worked well and pulled great through RPMs. Plus had 17" of vacuum, which will work great on the tunnel ram. Best Vid yet. Ozzys LUV 273s we only got SBs so lots of hot A bods wre built 273/318s . I had a wild 'wednesday' 273 but cam specs are well lost in the Purple haze that still fogs my loungeroom , i kno it wasn't' Max' lift , saw that NOT work on lots of em . More Vhot street than full race but it reg smoked 350s n 351s and pissed of lotsa egos. I'd look hard at the cam with the dome piston block ? An elf mite have pissed on it bringin all the luck . Have Fun .

    Dude!!!❤❤❤ love it! I'm so jealous. I had a 63 dodge van, 73 road runner, 70 challenger, 85 dodge ramcharger, anyway now an 04 dodge ram 2500 CTD 4x4 and it'll do everything I wanted all the other ones did. I still get nostalgic watching you rifle though all your stuff though lol!

    Looking forward to this build! Neat seeing one of my favorite old performance books, though I always thought that particular one was more inspirational than detailed. Glad you're going for how you want it. I'm essentially doing the same with my 318 for now. I thought about starting a 'bad idea' thread on a forum to get feedback on some of the options but then decided to just do it.

    I can't think of anything COOLER than a tunnel ram w/2 carbs on a street driven car. OK, maybe an 8-71 supercharger. Kudos to you for having this goal for the GCC. I had a tunnel rammed 440 big block 65 Fury as my daily driver for many years. Did I mention that is was my DAILY driver? Yeah, I was single then, but it was awesome. Tunnel rams work great on the street. I still have the fury with the tunnel ram 440, but I am taking the tunnel ram off......to be replaced with an 8-71 Dyers Supercharger. Good Times, Good Times....
    I anxiously await the next installment of the GCC. Youda Man!

    OMG... I didn't know that you're in the PNW. I live in Central Oregon, and I have a 56 Dodge Lancer Custom Royal with a 325 Hemi, with 3x2 intake, that I'm trying to rebuild. I'd love to be able to bring you in on the project. Originally, I'd planned to take my time and go crazy on it, but thanks to finding out that I have stage 4 cancer and knowing that my days are numbered, I'm just wanting to get it put back together and on the road ASAP.

      Oh damn. Yeah, I’m in western Washington. My schedule is pretty screwed but I’d love to be involved somehow. It just so happens I have a pile of 315 Hemi parts too.

    • @jasonmarquis7586
      @jasonmarquis7586 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @DeadDodgeGarage I believe that it'll run if I just put it back together with new gaskets, and I have the original 315 Poli that was in the car when I bought it, just in case I need a part. My problem is that I'm an artistic furniture builder, not a mechanic. Sure, taking it apart was easy, but when it comes to putting it back together, that's a different story. Expect me to try and pick your brain from time to time. I love that you work on classic engines and not just classic cars.

    Grab a sanding block and some # 600~1000 grit wet paper and that paint will smooth right out. Buff it out, perfect.
    Running slow these days but hey, just glad I'm still running. Thanks again and regards.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ll definitely be knocking down the run, but beyond that… there isn’t enough clear coat on the bottom of the car to sand. The lighting and heating in the shop both left a lot to be desired, we’ll just say that. Thank you!

    ok so funny I watch to the end before posting a comment in the middle of the video I was saying if you're not doing the coolest ever turbo slant 6 than that 273 need 3 carbs like the 340 had..than you show your 2 four intakes I approve. It will not run better than a basic 4 barrel but way way cooler with 2 carbs.

    Really enjoyed the video, love all the knowledge you have. I built a 283 just because I wanted to, even though a 350 or 383 would of been faster. But it’s fun to do the oddball stuff sometimes, you should totally build the 273 just for the hell of it.

    I had a 66 barracuda. I liked it. I’m pretty sure it’s the car I spotted on curbside classics. That was in2010 and the author Mr niedermeyer didn’t answer my email. I was in Portland when I sold it and live in Myrtle point now but the car was still somewhere in Oregon in 2010. I miss that car. I remember the Oregon plate was fsn101 when I had it.

    I have no idea what a 273 with what you have in mind is going to be like, and that's why this will be cool. I (and everyone else) will get to find out. One thing I do know is that those superstock "D/Darts" did quite well back in the day which is pretty close to the formula you seem to be going for.
