This movie literally saved the horror genre and revolutionized the industry at the time, as well as Wes Craven's career. Horror movies weren't even being produced anymore because studios thought people just didn't like horror. Turns out, all that was needed was a fresh and new film that did something different.

They originally wanted Drew Barrymore to play Sidney but she was the one who suggested that it would be more shocking if she died at the beginning of the movie.

Randy saying "Jamie, look behind you!" was a genius writing since Randy's actor name was Jamie Kennedy. So, it's like telling himself to look behind.

One of the most iconic opening scenes in any horror movie! Imagine being in theaters in 1996 expecting young Drew Barrymore to be the main character of the movie, only to be ki**ed off within the first 5 minutes. Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson (screenwriter) knew how to keep audiences on their toes. Also, this cast is forever iconic.

Fun fact when the actress who played Sidney stabbed billy with the umbrella the second time she missed the protective vest so his scream was a real reaction and the actor wanted to keep the take because he knew he couldn’t recreate his reaction

They kept Drew Barrymore (original first choice for main character) in the promotional material, and treated her as a main character in promotion because she was by far the biggest person in the film, and if she could die in the first scene then anything was possible.

one of the best slasher franchises ever. Apart from a little bump on number 3, the series has stayed consistently great. I was 17 when the first one came out, I loved horror growing up as a kid in the 80s and after years of bad horror, Scream literally saved the slasher genre. The approach of having the kids be aware of horror and the series be able to play on those cliches was truly original.
