    We all know that Game of Thrones is just that… a game for the Iron Throne. But with all the time spent theorizing on who WILL win the Seven Kingdoms, we decided to take a different approach and pose the question: Who is actually FIT to rule the Seven Kingdoms? In this Wisecrack Edition, we focus on the Queen of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen. Through the lens of political philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli, we evaluate Daenerys’s leadership skills utilizing three of his most famous texts: The Prince, Discourses on Livy, and The Art of War. How does the Breaker of Chains stack up? Let’s find out!

      I have. I was watching one of these videos discussing the idea that cersie and jamie might be the mad king's bastards (that was hella convincing, ill find it for you if you want to know more) and I see that parallel between her and Cersei. I think they're two sides of the same coin- queens who get in over their heads and love fire to a disturbing degree. I think Danaerys is aware that what her dad did was wrong and therefore actively tries to hold back the firelust I think she feels, whereas Cersei gives zero Fs and has admitted repeatedly enjoying watching people suffer. Cersei has no restraint, Danaerys is constantly in conflict within her self of when to hold back and when to "be a dragon"

    The sad thing is, Daenerys may barely be passing but she's at least beginning to recognize that she needs help when it comes to governing. Hence why she seeks counsel from Tryion; they do a pretty good job at complementing each others' political strengths and weaknesses. But will it be enough?

      Honestly, I think the only person capable of effectively ruling Westeros is Tyrion.
      He has the intellect, patience, and negotiation skills to maintain peace among the Seven Kingdoms, and his willingness to adapt and compromise makes him a very approachable and therefore likable ruler. There is little probability he's gain the throne, but if he doesn't all I see beyond him is ruin.

      i think I agree with you tyrion is an effective ruler but not much of a leader. the difference between a leader and a ruler is ther scope and intereste. the roles of the leader is to set objective, inspire people to follow them and be an example and in many cases deanerys is very effective at that as stated daario shes a conquerer not a queen. in the show tyrion lacks many qualities of a leader, for one he's a dwarf and that a fairly major weakness in the GOT universe, second we don't really know what his vision if he has one, it looks more like he's been looking for a person to follow all his life.

    I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Tyrion's slavery plan wise. He negotiated with masters who (a) didn't know who he was, (b) wanted to discuss it with Daenerys, and (c) were promised basically nothing that they actually wanted.
    After all, what did Tyrion ultimately tell them? "We'll give you seven years to somehow figure out a new way of life for yourselves and every other slave master in Slaver's Bay, and in return we won't destroy you"? That's not a negotiation, it's blackmail. And the masters could sense that Daenerys wasn't there to back up that threat, so they attacked in anticipation of self-defense.

    • @lewisdavidson571
      @lewisdavidson571 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yonatan but what else was he to do? As soon as they realised they couldn't see Dany, they'd attack. It was a lose-lose situation and his hands were tied.

  • @bluecat1462
    @bluecat1462 7 ปีที่แล้ว +286

    Dany's position in slavers bay is a bit more complicated than the video admits. There are a lot of historical analyses comparing her time ruling and the reconstruction era after the US civil war. In that analysis, the Wise Masters are essentially the rich slave-owning plantation owners. It's not really a situation that leads to a healthy debate in the "both sides have a point" type of way: The wise masters were going to react violently to any loss of status and having their former "property" given personhood.

    The Machiavellian Philosophy is well portrayed through another player: Tywin Lannister

    • @DogseatDogs
      @DogseatDogs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Midnight Smith I see how you can jump to that conclusion but if you look at another perspective Tywin is, at his core, a man who's willing to do anything for his fam and his own people of the Westerland and Westeros. Yes he is oblivious to his children' feelings but he still tries to care for them as a responsibility. Yes he may have ordered tortues and massacres of families but if you are forced to choose between a few thousands of your enemies, granted they have fams and noble causes to fight, and dozens of thousand of other people who are merely caught up in their lords' petty conflict what would you choose. That was the question in Tywin's mind when he had to order the Red Wedding. True he's a conservative man and I admit he's a terrible father and not a morally great person. But his principles are amongst the most likely ones that a ruler may have to apply, just like care for the common people. I recommend the "Why TL is the best GoT character" video if you're interested in understanding my point and exploring the series in a different light

    • @AtodaK
      @AtodaK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Tywin's Machiavellian chops suffer for not having put Cersei down when she started tipping over the apple cart every chance she got.
      Stability would have been a more likely outcome of letting the twins and their bastards get snuffed and having Stannis take the throne. It still would have left him with a boatload of Lannisters even discounting the maybe not his son with the crossbow.
      You're right, he was all about his family, that's why he doesn't measure up to Machiavelli. Machiavelli isn't about being able to do horrible things when appropriate - yeah it's a part of it but not the whole thing - it's about keeping things running smoothly. The Red Wedding doesn't make him Machiavellian, the fact that he let the situation devolve so far that the entire North was rebelling and there was a whole other civil war happening just to keep his bloodline on the throne says he doesn't belong in that category.

    • @jermox
      @jermox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Tywin is too thin skin and acts against those he believes slighted him. He is intelligent but would not be the best example of a Machiavellian leader.

      What about Cersei gave him the impression she would just roll over and say "Damn, guess you beat me! Shouldn't you put some cuffs on me or something? I hope there's a Black Cell with a window free, but then again I guess maybe there aren't any windows down there, it being the black cells and all. Oh well, I'm sure we can work out some type of imprisonment in any case!"

      Definitely a mistake, but given that he's spent the last 14 years or so living with the fear that Robert would come after Jon, an understandable one on a human level. Unfortunately in ASOIAF, acting in a humane way often ends poorly.

    • @wyssmaster
      @wyssmaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ned didn't want to harm the Baratheon children (given the delicate manner in which Robert handled the Rhaegar situation I'm pretty sure Ned assumed that Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella would have been executed along with Cersei and Jaime) and gave Cersei a chance to take them and run. He also thought he had the Goldcloaks on his side (...unless that happened afterwards? I don't entirely remember the timeline) and so was trying to avoid a war in King's Landing. It seems obvious to the reader that Cersei wouldn't just roll over, but Ned comes from a very different culture (especially politically) than the southrons.

    • @matthewadams8040
      @matthewadams8040 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes it's not that crazy of a turn this video goes to prove that she's always done it but season 8 presented her solution but told from the eyes of others. Combined with the genetic probabilities she would go crazy like the mad king, the lack people questioning her and the feeling of lonelyness made everything she did worthless in the mind of someone who been abused her whole childhood and told that she's only one thing. what really is the point when you achieve a success that you thought you wanted what's the point if you got what you wanted, you want more. This show has always been realistic and this just goes to show it. I very much enjoyed this ending and completely see why George r Martin agrees with it. She's not a great leader and didn't deserve it. She was too egotistical too in her head. It just goes to show that no one person should rule over so many people. It was shown that even still she wouldn't let anything but complete control over everything. She was fixated on breaking the wheel her way only, when did the show portray her as a person of compromise willing to work with what's she's given. Even if she spared the city what difference would it have made under her rule. But the wheel is to big and to complex to break without something to replace it with and idk if she knew what she was going to do after in the world where she spared them. That's why the only option to get what she wanted was fear. But once you sacrifice your morals for the thing she wanted it wasn't enough. But I do agree that the show maybe should have been more explicit in her thoughts, but then why would you try justifying nuking a whole city. Her character was flawed as were all the character. As we all are. That's the moral question the show leaves us with. Some characters realized their flaws and lived while others died to them. And jiamy choose his fate knowing his flaws but his love meant more. There's really a good video here for it on all of their flaws and the phycology of metacognition

    The problem with your analysis is it fails to take into account the uncompromising position of Danaerys’ adversaries... She cannot effectively act in any way other than to opt for outright destruction as her enemies will not accept any of the olive branches she offers to them. The sons of the harpy and the slavers are utterly uncompromising and prove that some problems cannot be solved by taking the middle road... Tyrion’s pragmatic efforts ALSO prove this point. When the enemy is utterly ruthless, cunning, and hell bent on achieving its objective the only way to defeat it is to remove the weed root and stem (think Tywin Lannister with the Reynes of Castamere).

      This is blatantly false. There were so many times I'm the series where Dany COULD have compromised, but chose not to because she deals in absolutes - that's the difference between her and Jon, Dany was never good - she is a conquer, and this was made evident when she first got power.

    Dany is all about a system of freedom and liberty as long as it includes her at the top as benevolent despot. I'm not sure Dany would care all that much about either if they were achievable and ended without her on top of the pyramid (yes, I know). This will be part of her conflict in TWoW and ADoS (sorry but I'm a book purist) and is of course reflected in GRRMs "human heart in conflict with itself"-ethos. Hope she is willing to do "good" regardless of weather it gets her a throne in the end. That's the difference (or one at least) of her leadership and Jon's.

    Actually Tyrion being by her side seems to be doing more harm than good. Like like when he negotiated with the slave masters it ended in them being betrayed and having the city almost destroyed. Also those battle plans that he came up with... what happened? They failed and on top of that they lost atleast one major allie in each battle. Every single major thing Tyrion has ever counseled her on has become a complete failure. It actually ends up turning out that each time her way of doing things, rather it be destroying them all or imprisonment, would've ended up being the right way.

    Well, if it wasn't for the White Walkers, maybe we'd get the chance to see the whole structure break down again, with the Dothraki raping and pillaging (the way the Ironborn are told they'll no longer be allowed to do under her reign). BUT, as things are, something tells me we're not going to have the opportunity to see those realistically inevitable problems arise.

      ca ss Did you not watch the video? *Justice =/= good at ruling.* Crucifying the masters was idiotic. *Pissing off the nobles of Mereen who have power, money and influence* that they could *use against her* (which they did through the *sons of the harpy).* Suuuure, good idea.
      *Killing the former slave* for killing an alleged Son of Harpy before his trial may have been righteous and just yet it *was also stupid.* The former slave mentions that the people of Mereen *don't understand the concept of a trial.* So from the perspective of the people, all they see is their *foreign Queen slaughtering a beloved former slave* turned hero who played a big part in helping Dany overthrow the masters. She should have *pardoned him or at least execute him privately,* not out of kindness or mercy but rather because it is the *wiser thing to do.* Dany's *power roots from the love of the people* yet by executing the slave, she lost that strength.
      Also, *crucifixion isn't justice* but rather *vengeance;* a clean execution or exile would have been justice. Some of the nobles she executed was rather against the crucifixion of the children
      In addition, she did NOT marry Xaro, Jorah convinced her not to back in S2

      Okay, but she's being compared to other young people who rule aka Jon, Rob, Joffrey, Sansa. She's aged up in the show, partially because that's the equivalent of Middle Ages maturity. 15 was considered pretty adult when most people didn't live past 40. And that's generous.

      If you can't get a straight A you simply shouldn't rule. The 'she's still learning' is the same dumb excuse they give Trump when he, again, misunderstands a simple constitutional law. It would have been more fair if Dany realized she's crap at ruling and gave up on it. That said, her personal character traits aren't suitable either. Even after 'learning' she'll still lack patience, she'll still suck at conversation and she'll always play pretend.

      Yeah it's not that crazy of a turn this video goes to prove that she's always done it but season 8 presented her solution but told from the eyes of others.

    Well that is the Targaryen way, and the Valyrian way, the Old Valyrian Nobles families used to burn down to the ground everything that stood in their way, for conquest or for gold. Having dragons create that mentality, believing themselves to be all powerful and that they could smash anyone that dare to question their power.

    Dany: * has no clue how to run a city and creates an abundance of problems because of her absolutism and hypocrisy then burns people *
    Tyrion: * solves all of her mistakes/problems while completely wasted the entire time *

    Great video as always! We want one on Tyrion, John Snow and Little Finger too!
    One little suggestion: some of the italian words' pronunciations are wrong (including Macchiaveli's name, as Nicolò has a stress on the last o). Next time try using something like VoiceOver or ask your Italian-mother-tongue viewers for finding out the right pronunciation ;)

      yes
      Sansa has a balance between her dream of being queen and the needs of peoples.
      When Daenerys comes at Westeros her only purpose is taking the ultimate power. She has no link with peoples of Westeros, and being a targaryan , coming with a horde of barbarians with bad reputations make not you popular.

    Philosophy of daenerys is make slaves without chains and let them think they are free

      That's the definition of being free. The only one.

      @Jeremy Shaffer No, i'm against dumbasses like you.
      Without chaines(without coertion) is the very definition of freedom.
      Only a moron with an IQ of 50 couldn't understand it.
      PD: Also Daenerys is the biggest liberator of the story. hahahaha
      She freed the entire bay of slaves from the millennial tradition of slavery.
      Approximately 700,000 people.

      @@mikehoot3978 Maybe read the books and feel differently. She forces the people she conquered into hard labour without any pay. Working a job you don't want to do for no money= slavery. She gets embarrassed when called out on it in the last book
