John Gault this isn't politics though...? You should have some reasonable arguments and you should be able to absorb said arguments and analyze them despite your bias...
John Gault philosophy plays a major part in every day life so idk why you see it so differently. If you've ever questioned life you've delved on philosophy. Religion is philosophy if you think about it but unfortunately people take it too literally
John Gault you're kinda weird haha, it's a debatable topic, despite your thick skull. Idc about arguing but it must be sad to have such a limited mindset (side note) you kinda don't have any legitimate arguments yourself here so don't go acting superior when you're the one that can't even contemplate someone else's opinion.
Like homer simpsons, people miss the point by thinking he is an idiot when in reality he represent the modern colective mindset of north korea, according to the r-tarded logic of an inbreed waste of space that michael richardson is. Oh no, whats that? Unfollowing comment so you can keep the salt ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have similar revelation, the universe doesn't care about you, but you shouldn't care about the universe. Fuck the universe, you have complete freedom to do whatever you want, you are the center of your universe with a population of just you, you are your own god, and only your reality matters. Narcissist Nihilism.
Surprised you didn't mention Mr. Meseeks at all, a character it seems the writers created to perfectly embody cosmic nihilism. I mean, "existence is pain."
@@reddeadultimate9558 You're right. I should go to space and crucify some glip glops in forbodulon zeta 7 because that's an option that's readily available for everyone in the world.
I would actually say the opposite, the Meseeks are more alike to religious zealots(or just very devout people). They exist for a singular purpose (or at lease believe they do) for which they are created, much like a religious zealot who believes they where created for a purpose and have meaning. They find pain in existence due to the fact that it means their purpose is not complete, and upon completing their purpose are completely fine with ceasing to exist. Alike to a religious soldier(eg Crusader) who is completely willing to die if they believe it is their purpose(eg suicide bombers).
I feel like you missed an opportunity with Mr. Peanutbutter. His message to Diane when she was about to go off on her philanthropic journey sounded suspiciously close to Cosmic Nihilism. He said “ The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.” Mr Peanutbutter has ultimately gone further beyond caring about the meaninglessness of existence, and rather than grasp for some legacy like Bojack does, he just does whatever he feels like.
Underrated comment you’re absolutely right I completely forgot I guess that makes Mr.Peanutbutter a cosmic nihilist and Bojack a existential one woooow who would of thought Mr.Peanutbutter is darker than Bojack and less bitchy about the fact
Aaron Willoughby Nothing really "happened" per say, but if you analyze Mr. PB a little closely he's not as happy as he appears (albeit, he is still happy.) I did a video analysis of him on my channel.
4:43 Mr. Peanutbutter is the “personification” (lol) of optimistic nihilism i think “ Life isn’t about the search for meaning but just to distract yourself with unimportant stuffs and eventually you will be dead” He just accepted the truth that life is meaningless and are happy to be a nobody. Why would you even bother ascribing meaning to something that’s inherently meaningless when the only thing that comes out of it is misery, alcoholism and just negativity? Life is a laugh and death is a joke so just take it easy and laugh along the way to your grave. That’s my two cents
Although BoJack himself is a nihilist, I don't find the show itself to be nihilist at all. It's just a realistic depiction of the struggles of someone suffering with depression.
I 100% agree, but I think that BoJack probably has BPD not depression. people with depression don't have the motivation to get out of bed most of the time. BoJack does. his childhood trauma, the chronic emptiness that he can't get rid of, substance abuse, reckless behaviors etc. they are all signs of a personality disorder. im not disagreeing that he has depressive tendencies, I just think that there is more there.
When ever this subject is brought up I look back to the very profound observation of Michelle Eileen McNamara (Patton Oswalt's deceased wife) "It's all chaos. Be kind."
Dude totally. I saw that special. You are essentially a weak God who has to decide what his impact will be. In the midst of the whirlwind of glass which is our universe, you are going to be a force of what type? And choosing to go your own way is what gives you purpose as a human. When you dont do you, you die.
"Notions such as love should be dismissed." Then you and Rick say love is a chemical reaction in the brain. Doesn't that make it real, not some bullshit to be dismissed? Getting drunk or high is just a chemical reaction and yet Rick does that all the time.
In my point of view, Rick Sánchez is a a genius that pretends he knows everything (maybe he really does) but is human nevertheless, and he will say anything to try to keep himself alway of emotions and attachments, like a defense mechanism.
Gone 004 it’s the least enjoyable think. It’s perpetual misery. Every single passing minute is just torture. The only respite is a delusion, smoking, and a whole lot of drinking on the weekends.
Why is nihilism always assumed to be connected with substance abuse? In the end, it doesn't matter if you're drunk/high/other. You're dead. Given enough time, of course.
>why is nihilism always assumed to be connected with substance abuse? >in the end it doesn't matter if you're drunk/high/other Come on, man, you are so close to figuring it out
Wertain II here’s one reason. You become a burden to those around you. Not only are you useless, but you’re actively making things worse. Life’s hard, if you refuse to help then at least get out of the fucking way
Because most of the time it is. Think about it if nothing matters at all then why prolong the trip Because nihilism in itself is another dumb coping mechanism. If you’re scared of the unknown, make yourself believe it doesn’t exist
I think in the end nihilism can help us coop with our own fears and anxieties, by realizing noting matters we can just stay chill and do what we want.(I mean this subjectively) lol
@@phoenixfeather1337 if "nothing matters" inmediately makes you think you would do bad shit, then the "negativeness" is already in you. Not in the philosophy. What Im trying to say here is... just because one is free to do whatever they want, that doesnt mean to do bad. A meaningless life doesnt mean a negative life, it means a life of freedom to create your own path. Whatever you choose from there, that's entirely up to you.
@@phoenixfeather1337 Who cares if it's unhealthy or toxic if it makes you happy, nothing matters in the end so being a saint or a sinner doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
Nihilism is a paradox because if you truly found life meaningless you would have killed yourself (don't obviously). Why keep living if there was truly no meaning?
Just a clarification: Nietzsche was what he called an active nihilist: someone who destroys all previously held values, morals and beliefs and creates their own; someone who awknoledges the tragedy that is life, but love it regardless, and most of all, live it. Now, what he warned against was what he called passive nihilism: someone who awknoledges the baselessness of all morals, values and beliefs, as well as the tragic nature of life (and its meaninglessness), but stops there, and more or less lives day by day, waiting to die, with no goals, passions, or dreams to speak of.
@@larapunk3532 meaninglessness and meaning arent real concepts. That's why nihilism is not only wrong, it doesnt have a concept that correlates with reality.
@@larapunk3532 if i could hold this meaning or concept into anything, i would have already done so. Will power may be real because it does affect your body to produce more dopamine and other essential chemicals. Well if anyone took nihilism to the extreme you also finding that "thoughts and emotions" don't matter and you might let go of the concept of yourself and reach a nice empty clear and calm mind. Nihilism in practice can be called meditation and it feels more healthy than drowning oneself in alcohol
They may not matter in the grand scheme of things but they're real and should be acknowledged and accepted as a part of being human. There's no need to go against ones nature if it doesn't hurt anyone. Letting go of that would be denying your own humanity and ultimately harm more than help.

You do something truly amazing, sharing your wisdom and knowledge, that is the point of philosophy, anthropology, etc. Keep the fucking amazing work going!
As a doctor of Cartoonology, I love what you've done here, and have found myself comparing the nihilism of Bojack H. and Rick S. on more than one occasion. Great job, awesome channel. With your permission, I'd love to reference your material while giving lectures on Twitter and other platforms. Keep doing what you do, Cartoonology thanks you. The problem with throwing away ethical concerns (with cosmic nihilism), is that the human body is still a biological system that rewards social behavior. So even if you understand that ethics are arbitrairy, you cannot escape the chemical construction of the brain. Besides, there are judicial consequences of unethical actions, which will severely impair the possibility of any satifaction one might obtain
The problem is that literally none of that matters. Lets say for a moment Christianity is right, god says our duty in existence is to obey him and your reward is everlasting paradise. To which I ask why is that important? Whats the point of everlasting pleasure?
You are exactly right. God’s existence wouldn’t solve the problem of meaning. It’s a continuous loop: What would be the reason for God’s plan? What is the reason for this reason? What is the reason for that reason? And so on… until in infinity. Meaning itself (ironically) is meaningless.

You totally skipped over Mr. Peanut Butter's means to deal with existential dread. "The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning, it's just to keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense and eventually you'll be dead". Stay busy - if you're bored enough to feel existential dread you need to be working more >:(
I was a nihilist and absurdist then, but now I embrace theistic existentialism, which acknowledges meaninglessness and absurdity, but I create meaning either spontaneously or though allowing some influence. though I might think that god and jesus may be just human constructs or imagination, I embrace their morals and give them meaning as it helps me make other people happy by spreading enlightenment and volunteering for a cause. Bringing joy and service to other people, and exploring, enlightening, enjoying, and experiencing my life by appreciating the meaningless with my own given meaning...this is my meaning of life. I've always found Bojack incredibly relatable to me, so I knew which one I was since the beginning. Either way, I really enjoyed this video, I never realised how similar the 2 are. It's interesting that they both emerged at a similar time, and are both incredibly popular. Probably says something about todays culture.
we are all scratching at the wall trying to figure out wtf is going on, it's been the same throughout all of history it's just now we have the internet so we can finally speak to people from all over the world, only to find out, no one knows wtf is going on and that terrifies us.

I feels like, I can't have a healthy relationship anything is addictive. When I have too much pressure on me I think about drinking. Even I barely use alcohol, the idea of being an alcoholic frightens me.It's weird and after I watched bojack horseman, I began to questioning everything. Like over-eating, sugar consuming, over-watching, social media consuming etc. Everytime that we are not aware of what we are doing, we are addicts. I think, filling the holes inside our souls is impossible if we just delay conscious times. But do we have a chance? I mean, don't we have to carry over? Why we want to stop and being sad about our existential crisis? It's just sounds like meaningless but sometimes I feels like it is the only thing that is not meaningless.
My Christ literally writing my college dissertation on Rick and Morty and bojack horseman and you come out with this..... I am feeling a genuine love for you guys.
Eh, i think it’d mostly be either bojack complaining about something, rick telling him its all bullshit because of reasons, and bojack calling him a jackass, or rick saying some sciency version of “life has no meaning”, bojack calling him out on it and rick using his infinite world so whatever argument. It sounds fun in theory but i imagine it couldn’t be anything other than disappointing.
Do you really think Morty is nothing but a cloaking device for Rick? Remember how he was willing to sacrifice himself for that cloaking device in Rickle in Time? The cloaking device is the excuse Rick tells himself to convince himself that he does not care.
nontheless, even if it is an excuse he makes up, he chooses for this one in order to maintain his 'Cosmis nihilism', and that's what this video is about. I think they tackled rick and mortys relationship in another video about that series.
But then his cosmic nihilism becomes a burden for him. A lie which he tells himself to suppress his human values and which enables him to follow his actually pretty basic and not really that sophisticated urges to have fun... and which ultimately brings him - wubba lubba dub dub - great pain.
I think Rick's problems trying to rationalise his feelings for his family are an important part of what makes him relatable and give us a reason to care about him just a little bit.
My take on it is, that Rick knows that the only reason he cares about Morty is the basic biology. Evolution made us care about our children to increase the probability of survival for ones species. That is also the reason why he doesn't want to admit it, since he is 'forced' to have those feelings, even though he knows where they come from, which obviously pisses him off.
There is a heavy bias in existentialist thinking. The only people who worry about the nuance of existing are those who don't need to worry about survival so much so that they don't value it. Great video Wisecrack!
Hey to you appreciating fans at the end of the video.... I'll drink to that keep doing what you guys do I love your content and I look forward to seeing more
Interesting. I would define myself as an optimist cosmic nihilist. There is no reason not to try feeling good so let's do our best to be happy. Even if it's an illusion or a chemical reaction, what value is there in not living in an illusion if that "not illusion" sucks. Truth only matters when not knowing it lead us to detrimental choices, but when truth itself is a bad choice, why care about it? And why not be altruistic while we are there too? There might be no reason to be, sure, but there is no reason to be a jerk either. So to sum up : "Nothing matters but hey let's have fun while we are there."
So, basically Epicureanism or hedonism (meant strictly as a non-judgmental descriptor) would be where you've parked your philosophical car, depending on how you judge feeling good. Epicureanism focuses more on elimination of pain and fear and the the promotion of feeling good and secure (ie; feeling good in the long game), vs. hedonism that passes no judgement on the time value of good feelings (feel good now, or next week, or 50 years from now, whatever feels good). Regardless of which makes sense to you, the good news is that the answer will feel good and, by definition of the view you've chosen, you will effectively be "right," or at least self-consistent. TLDR: *thumbs up*
Yeah because he can't be 100% cold for the entire show. It's still a TV show and thus characters need to undergo at least some form of change... Rick's obvious gradual change is his realization that he does have, as he puts it, "irrational emotional attachments"
Sometimes it feels to me like he wants to prove to himself that nothing matters. But no one can escape the shackles of having a physical body. And that comes with needs that have to be met like food, connecting with others etc.
@@claudis.4015 You can temporarily escape it pretty easily, turns out chemicals can do wonderful things, also he's Rick Sanchez you really wanna bet he can't escape having a physical body? He resurrected himself repeatedly and made a thinking feeling digital copy of himself that accidentally gained a physical form... I somehow feel it is very much within his capabilities to escape his physical body if he wants to. And yeah uhh you do realize that nothing does matter right? Have any grasp on why nihilism is a thing? yeah...
@@InsanityPlusOne Thanks for the polite responds. I love me some constructive feedback any day. Nothing like a respectful discussion to change a stranger's mind, am I right? :)
I gotta give it to BoJack in this instance. As per Season 4, he's made legitimate progress in being a better person and moving forward. Rick doesn't move forward, he moves face-down into a puddle of his own vomit and/or shit.
Indeed I don’t find much problem with ricks mental realm of despair though what I do seem to find problems with is that in his own holier than thou idealism he refuses to see things through the perspectives of those who see more than emptiness in the human condition and ruin such idealism’s through his slaughter of near every thing he comes across
The Philosophy of The Good Place please!!! It is a really underrated show, with some actuall Philosophy as part of the plot!! That would be so interesting !!
13:25 he’s just describing the ego structure. I actually agree completely that our “self” is just an illusion. The “everyone is no body” quote scene was so real to me.
See, the thing I think this needs to touch on about Rick is that he's explicitly a bad example of how to be a cosmic nihilist. He recognizes that the universe is pointless, and misinterprets that that to mean that the universe is evil. Love is fake, therefore it can't feel good. Rick seeks to justify his own suffering by saying that nothing is justified. Which makes him an interesting character, but not actually a good example of where to go with one's nihilism.
I disagree. First of all, he never explicitly states that the universe is evil nor does he ever say that [(edit:) he thinks] it is evil. He said that it can be cruel and unfair, but even that doesn't mean that it is evil. Nothing is either good or evil, as the universe is too complicated to be one. Also, evil isn't the opposite of good. Secondly, he doesn't say that love can't feel good, it is just that he definitely thinks it is an illusion and he would feel foolish and weak to believe that it is true. Also, he doesn't need to justify his suffering as we all know he is, so why bother, right? Additionally, he ALSO never said NOTHING is justified, he just doesn't act on ideas that CANNOT be justified. So, I think he is a great example still. Thanks for the chat, I needed something to waste time.
If you, remember in vindicators 3, Morty actually quotes rick when talking to Vance about good and evil. "Rick says good and evil are artificial constructs"...so rick couldnt really believe the universe is evil. Maybe, unfair, but not evil.
Canario Garcia really, do you even really watch. With episode like the seymour asses, or, robot hell, or even the the beast with a million backs. How can you say there's no philosophy. The even push the idea that the more things change the more they stay the same.
I always feel like I’m on the cusp of being depression and anxious and that I have been for nearly all of my life. But I think what keeps me afloat is that I don’t ever regret anything, because there’s no point of regretting something you have already done. You can change the reaction of what’s happened, but you can never take it back
I like to think bojack horseman takes place in a dimension where earth is overrun by furries, cats only live around 16-20 years, Princess Carolyn is in her 50s, she isn't a cat, she a FURRY.
Wow, I would not have thougt Bojack Horseman is such a good and entertaining cartoon. Since I already loved Rick and Morty, guess what I will do instead of studying the next few days.

I tend to think along the absurdist line of thought that there is no inherent meaning and our irreconcilable desire for meaning makes life both tragic and ultimately worth living. If nothing has intrinsic worth and it's all based on one's perception, then you have the freedom to ascribe worth to whatever you so choose. Ultimately I do think this is still a coping mechanism, but I enjoy entertaining the illusion at times for sanity's sake.
oriana garrido that's just cosmic nihilism. And your brain is just falling back into taught patterns. Don't fool yourself into something so pretentious as it being both
Existential Nihilist not only I love the 4S (Schopenhauer, Soren, Sartre and Simone) but I believe that even if nothing really matters, ethics must still be followed, for people's feelings and our relationships (everything from friends to the entirety of the living beings in the planet) should still be accounted for, I mean, even if we're just a blue rock floating in space under a sunbeam, this still is our world
Hey, Wisecrack-you guys have made me laugh, you’ve made me cry, you’ve made me stop up short and reevaluate things I thought I knew, and you’ve made me scream at my screen in anger; you’ve entered into a dialogue and invited us along for the ride, and I will always be thankful. Nothing is true. Everything is permited. To say that nothing is true, is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted, is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.

God I love these shows. I personally like bojack a bit more just because in my opinion it's a bit more sentimental and I can relate and care more about the characters and stories
Bojack starts to lose my interest over time, since the characters ultimately refuse to learn and fail the same way over and over again. The show hasn't really covered any new ground in a while. But it's core message is probably a bit stronger than Ricks.
Unhelpful Revelations I think this is supposed to happen. In TV shows there is always that redemption arc, to show us that no matter how evil you are, you can still be forgiven and live a normal/ happy/good life. But that’s just fiction, people relapse into bad habits, turn back to the old, comfortable ways (just like drug addicts). Take Princess Caroline (and her career girl speech) she knows that being close to Bojack is toxic and actively tries to distance herself. But old habbits die hard. Just like Bojack, Sarah Lyn and the rest. Sometimes it’s not enough to just try and the bad way is just so much easier. (Sorry for my English)
Where's the third option, of nihilism leading to an unending and unqualified sense of extreme joy and wonder? There seems to be this cultural assumption that nihilism implies some sort of suffering, when in reality it implies no "logical" emotional response to the inherent meaninglessness. Emotions should not be juxtaposed against rationality, because they just ARE. In that sense, there is no "reason" that one should feel anything over anything else. It is no more illogical to feel intense optimistic joy than it is to feel extreme pessimistic despair. Perhaps this is a form of Absurdism, but even Absurdism implies that it is "crazy" to believe this way. I am a positivist, and I suffer from no delusions that somehow my desires and beliefs are fundamental. Yet that doesn't stop me from pursuing a deep sense of joy and wonder with no less fervor than an intensely religious person pursues God. How are you supposed to convince me that my feelings are illogical? I make no claim on reality, only on my desires, which simply exist as they do.
Philosophical pessimism and wondrous joy aren't mutually exclusive. Acknowledging that despair is the most common or most easily explainable response to cosmic pessimism isn't the same as saying that it's the correct response.
You said that Mr.Peanutbutter seem fine but this quote from season one say the opposite : "The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead."
That is just absurdism for you :) If you read "The Myht Of Sisyphos" by Camus, he claims that this is the only way to be happy. There is no meaning in life and you should accept that and stop searching.
You mention the Mr. Peanutbutter seems fine, but I don't think that's true at all. We see the cracks beyond his happy-go-lucky character in his strained relationship with his wife and the episode where him and bojack visit his brother and they get all "I'm just waiting to die" on us. It shows that his fun-loving front is just that, a front to a scared and broken interior.
I don't think it's a front for a broken interior. I think he definitely can be sad, and depressed (we see him struggle with this around the death of his brother). But he ultimately comes out the other side of it quite quickly, cheerfully telling bojack that "nothing matters". Because happiness and meaning aren't about having everything be perfect all the time, and never being sad. Mr Peanut is the best adjusted of all of them (if only from an emotional standpoint), because he can perfectly embody the "keep living forward" philosophy, while others only state it.
the only thing that makes sense in life, is this very moment. people borrow from the past and invite the future.. what we call "now" is the most scary, lovely, scaring ect. ask you self this .. if i am just a shadow on the water, could i truly be a fish beneath it. stop analyze everything a just exist, scared pussies
Yeah we know he plays dumb (like not calling out bojack for who knows how long about kissing dianne, until hes pushed. His breakdown when bojack rejects him after bojack also pretends to be happy. And of course whenhe gets all depressively nihilistic when his brother was possibly dying.) Basically he hides a lot of his inner self with a persona desperate to make people like him. In season 4 he even admitted he only ran for governor because he wanted people to like him and didn't like the thought that maybe hes not well loved enough. It also explains why he's so desperate to be bojacks friend. Because bojack doesn't like him and he is compelled to change that. Not unlike pinkie pie actually. There was an entire episode about a donkey not wanting to be her friend, and she went to some pretty extreme measures to make him like her. Its beyond a healthy level of "of course people want to be liked" and into compulsion. Possibly personality disorder territory. If I had to guess I would say bojack is straight up borderline personality disorder (as in he has every symptom on display, some more pronounced than others) probably with narcissistic personality disorder traits underlying it. and mr peanutbutter has histrionic personality disorder. I have bpd so I'm quite familiar with it. (Also npd traits and with many friends with either). Hpd I know much less about. But I know core aspects are hiding behind a fake persona, expressing how you think others want you to be, coming across as fake usually, overly dramatic, and impulsive needs to engage in big attention grabbing gestures to impress others or make you the center of attention. And with all personality disorders they tend to cause problems with yourself, your work, and your relationships. His third marriage is falling apart literally because of his need for the spotlight, his running for governor, and his repeated over the top gestures even after being confronted with that they're for him, and not liked by the person receiving them. Bojack rejects him for being too bubbly and insincere seeming. And ultimately he lost a lot of his popularity after impulsive decisions that he thought would make people love him. Such as deciding people can eat whatever they want when trapped underground. He's not perfectly well adjusted, he just doesn't really express because he's terrified of the rejection that might cause.
han090 I already mentioned I have bpd. But to be precise I have quiet bpd. Standard bpd tends to cause lashing out. You yell at others or have other outbursts, openly admit suicidal feelings especially when rejected or abandoned. You sabotage those around you so they can't leave you. Or conversely you cut out relationships even that are going well so they can't reject you first. It's typically easy to see and not that hard to diagnose if you're familiar with the person and the condition. Though it can often be mistaken for bipolar disorder or other cluster b personality disorders. Quiet bpd however implodes rather than explodes. You rarely express yourself openly. You self harm, abuse substances or engage in risks, but without others knowing. You might withdraw but also act like everything is fine. It's not super unlike hpd, and in fact mr peanutbutter may have quiet bpd instead. There just isn't enough evidence to point to it. The issue is, because people almost never see the full range of symptoms its far easier to just decide is anxiety or depression and downplay the intense inner struggle. Personality disorders tend to be developed by abusive or turbulent childhood. My mom had bpd..classic bpd. It was violent, with a lot of yelling and put downs. She would say that I could talk to her about anything, but as my mental issues started developing and I tried she acted insulted, life I was directly saying she's terrible, and would threaten suicide. And even before that any time I had an issue, a fear, pain, sadness, I was yelled at to keep quiet, Loire about it and not "air dirty laundry" (like that time I was 16 and a neighbor raped me and when another neighbor asked if he was good I said no and my mom said she didn't want conflict with the neighbors and to shut up about it). Like yeah that imposed non expression and chronically bad condition I know is exactly why I have quiet bpd. So I think its highly unfair to say hes super well adjusted just because he smiles a lot and doesn't often express his negativity. It's, imo, a really shallow way to look at people. I mean come on even robin williams is a classic example of the happy well adjusted nice to everyone fun loving comedian type who was so depressed he killed himself. Portraying outwardly traits that make others think you're well adjusted doesn't mean that's accurate. I mean until season 4 it could be argued that princess carolyn was most well adjusted. She worked hard, did her best, helped everyone around her and when needed would stand up for herself when she felt taken advantage of. She had ups and downs but always went with it even when sad, hurt, or angry. But holding up that image of independent strength is stressful and it basically destroyed her and most of her season 4 relationships. If bojack wasn't actually improving his issues so well, it would have destroyed her completely when she told him that she forged his signature. Outward functionality doesn't really tell the whole story. And anyone can snap. I'd argue todd is the best adjusted main cast honestly. To think that love should be dismissed is ignoring the human need to categorize. Love isn't folk-psychology, it is the name that we as humans have given to the feeling we experience when the chemical reaction in our brains occurs. All emotions are chemical reactions, but they are still real--they are names given to specific chemical reactions, each of which has a vastly different effect.
I think you're missing the point. To my mind, Cosmic Nihilists are apt to argue that the traditional, transcendental notion of love is invalidated by its nature as a chemical phenomenon, and that therefore, it should be relegated to the same moral space that our basest, most animal needs (i.e shelter, food, sex) occupy. Nihilists don't deny that love is real or dismiss it--in fact, the reality that love is purely physical is integral to their worldview. Rather, they argue that modern man cannot stably validate his existence with the pursuit of love anymore so that he can with food or sex, hence the prevalence of hedonism amongst Cosmic Nihilists.
The Churchlands, cited as support for the cosmic nihilist thesis, go as far as to deny the existence of beliefs, feelings or desire though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Churchland#Philosophical_views Indeed, their views are deeply problematic and should not be understood as necessary for cosmic nihilism (or cognitive-centered philosophy of mind btw)
Feels kinda bad that every philosophical idea I had by myself has also been had by someone else hundreds of years ago, and, apparently, been turned into cartoons.
Existential nihilism sounds like a fear of destruction which prevents someone from making things, whilst cosmic nihilism is the fear of creation that you can keep destroying but everything will keep coming back.
Peanut-Butter was never fine, he just puts on a big happy fast. But with how many times he has been married it is fair to say he is deeply afraid to be alone maybe to even the point where if he was he thinks he will disappear. And by that it is fair to say that is the reason he wants to stay in the limelight and also will do what people tell them even if it doesn't make sense. Though that also might be since he isn't very bright.
How does love being a chemical reaction in the brain make it fake or pointless? Understanding the mechanics of something does not mean it has no meaning. As man-made and temporary as it may be. #wisecrackAMA
agreyknight it's pointless because there is no meaningful outcome of any process be it chemical, biological or what have you. There is no inherit value or meaning, it just exists unless you ascribe meaning to it.
But humans aren't separate from the universe. We are the universe. We're literally made up of bits of the universe. When we give something meaning, we are literally the universe giving things meaning. We don't need cosmic validation. We are the cosmos giving validation.
If we are the universe, then the understanding that nothing matters applies to our everyday lives. It's just an endless cycle of life being everything and nothing.
Its fake and pointless only when its given a deeper meaning, I think is what they're trying to say. Of course you can enjoy love and emotions and feelings - it is part of what makes us human. But you should always leave it at that. Don't make it where the world and the indifferent universe around you revolve around. Don't make it the point of living - the answer to everything. Which is what most people actually do, either consciously or not. Also, when it's nihilism we're talking about, you don't have to agree with everything the philosophy stands for - go live your life to the fullest with no regrets. But you can't also deny that there's some uncomfortable truths it presents, which eventually you'll have to face and accept, like the thing with love.
"We're literally made up of bits of the universe. When we give something meaning, we are literally the universe giving things meaning." Accurately speaking, we are then the universe giving itself meaning. Go back to the ~13 minute mark where Metzinger says "...you...are systems that simulate and emulate themselves for themselves..." Love and other emotions have no more meaning than a soda bottle exploding on a hot day. It's simply something that follows the basic physical laws of our universe. It is impermanent and impactless, therefore meaningless. It can be meaningful to you, but "you" (as in the self) are an illusion, therefore it is "fake". "Love" is nothing more than how we interpret the processes in our brain that compel us to breed (or in the case of familial love, to remain part of a pack/tribe for safety and survival). That is a far cry from the ideas of destiny and soul bonding and lifelong need for the object of your love that makes up our definitions of "love". "Understanding the mechanics of something does not mean it has no meaning." Corollary: Not understanding the mechanics of something does not mean that it has meaning. So understand it as much or as little as you want, and give it as much or as little meaning as you want. It doesn't matter. We're all going to die, the universe will end, and nothing of either will remain to tell the story. Make what you will out of the time that you have.
Sartre sees multiple realities with eyes like that-- even if he doesn't know it. Sorry-- if he DIDN'T know it at the time. I'm so drunk. Frickin' alcohol.
"Except Mr Peanut Butter, he seems fine" I mean he literally said there was no meaning in life. I think Mr PB is a personification of nihilism, for him life has no meaning, but because of that, he doesn't worry about life and does thing that amuse him.

And science can't also proof that soul exists, and it triggers him.. it makes sense
Existence is suffering, but it's better than nothing, you could at least enjoy it.
It is a big struggle but youre right why not have fun doing it

Why is nihilism always assumed to be connected with substance abuse? In the end, it doesn't matter if you're drunk/high/other. You're dead. Given enough time, of course.
Nihilism isn't always assumed to be caused by substance abuse, other way around. Substance abuse is typically a *result* of nihilism.
>why is nihilism always assumed to be connected with substance abuse?
>in the end it doesn't matter if you're drunk/high/other

Yes, because everyone is dead in the end, what is a good reason to not drink daily? You’ll harm yourself?
Wertain II here’s one reason. You become a burden to those around you. Not only are you useless, but you’re actively making things worse. Life’s hard, if you refuse to help then at least get out of the fucking way
Because most of the time it is. Think about it if nothing matters at all then why prolong the trip
Because nihilism in itself is another dumb coping mechanism. If you’re scared of the unknown, make yourself believe it doesn’t exist
I think in the end nihilism can help us coop with our own fears and anxieties, by realizing noting matters we can just stay chill and do what we want.(I mean this subjectively) lol

That doesn't breed unhealthy or toxic habits? Saying nothing matters is an easy copout to do bad shit if that's how you use it, of course
He even believed stopping the progress of nihilsm to be his mission.

The cosmic constant of "Don't be a dick" strikes again :D
Fortunately, i might add
The problem is that literally none of that matters. Lets say for a moment Christianity is right, god says our duty in existence is to obey him and your reward is everlasting paradise.

1234kalmar why? Sure I wouldn't like it but that doesn't matter. So why would pleasure or suffering matter?
You are exactly right. God’s existence wouldn’t solve the problem of meaning. It’s a continuous loop: What would be the reason for God’s plan? What is the reason for this reason? What is the reason for that reason? And so on… until in infinity. Meaning itself (ironically) is meaningless.

It sounds fun in theory but i imagine it couldn’t be anything other than disappointing.
What is this, a crossover episode?
Rick loves Morty he just cant make him self say it cause love is meaningless to him
My take on it is, that Rick knows that the only reason he cares about Morty is the basic biology. Evolution made us care about our children to increase the probability of survival for ones species. That is also the reason why he doesn't want to admit it, since he is 'forced' to have those feelings, even though he knows where they come from, which obviously pisses him off.
I love how blunt and direct this video is. It's perfect
There is a heavy bias in existentialist thinking. The only people who worry about the nuance of existing are those who don't need to worry about survival so much so that they don't value it.
Great video Wisecrack!

So to sum up : "Nothing matters but hey let's have fun while we are there."
that sounds like Absurdism :D You might enjoy Camus
That's pretty much the Mr peanutbutter philosophy (from Bojack Horseman)

Have any grasp on why nihilism is a thing? yeah...

What's this? A crossover episode? 😂
youre amazing
Eeerikaaa!
Neigh way, José...

Yes
I gotta give it to BoJack in this instance. As per Season 4, he's made legitimate progress in being a better person and moving forward.
Rick doesn't move forward, he moves face-down into a puddle of his own vomit and/or shit.
Indeed I don’t find much problem with ricks mental realm of despair though what
I do seem to find problems with is that in his own holier than thou idealism he refuses to see things through the perspectives of those who see more than emptiness in the human condition and ruin such idealism’s through his slaughter of near every thing he comes across
The Philosophy of The Good Place please!!!
It is a really underrated show, with some actuall Philosophy as part of the plot!! That would be so interesting !!
Hue Hue yes yes yes!!!! Please do it!!!!!!!!!
13:25 he’s just describing the ego structure. I actually agree completely that our “self” is just an illusion. The “everyone is no body” quote scene was so real to me.
This channel just went from good to perfect.
Why should Rick believe the universe is evil? I think he sees it as neither good or evil
Philosophy of futurama. Before it was cancelled the first time vs when it came back
eseliljoker5150 I love futurama, but I dont think it has any philosophy.
You can change the reaction of what’s happened, but you can never take it back
ah if only depression was a choice
2:17 *Fun Fact* !
Did you know that horses are physically incapable of vomiting?
_The More You Know!_
I like to think bojack horseman takes place in a dimension where earth is overrun by furries, cats only live around 16-20 years, Princess Carolyn is in her 50s, she isn't a cat, she a FURRY.
they respond to poisons by explosively evacuating through the other end
It's a cartoon for crying out loud, if the horse can talk, then it's equally capable of vomiting shit
Maybe because he's more man than horse?

Wow, I would not have thougt Bojack Horseman is such a good and entertaining cartoon. Since I already loved Rick and Morty, guess what I will do instead of studying the next few days.

**hears reddit howling at the distance**
I tend to think along the absurdist line of thought that there is no inherent meaning and our irreconcilable desire for meaning makes life both tragic and ultimately worth living. If nothing has intrinsic worth and it's all based on one's perception, then you have the freedom to ascribe worth to whatever you so choose. Ultimately I do think this is still a coping mechanism, but I enjoy entertaining the illusion at times for sanity's sake.
Philosophy of Calvin and Hobbes?

Absurdism does have a terrible branding problem but its basicly what you described yourself as.
Philosophical pessimism and wondrous joy aren't mutually exclusive. Acknowledging that despair is the most common or most easily explainable response to cosmic pessimism isn't the same as saying that it's the correct response.
I feel that Rick's character is very optimistic. Not all of us have portal guns to escape people's expectations of us.
You say you don't suffer from any delusions but as every other delusional person, acceptance of your delusions is key here.
I relate to Rick a lot. Not his smarts, ingenuity, or views… It’s the alcoholism 😂
Yeah you are right, I did not meant to say the opposite but I meant that his character has more depth than what we expect or what Bojack see in him.
But I also feel like they don't explore enough personal with him for that to be the case for sure. Who knows what demons he has. Maybe no one is well adjusted.
Hollyhock isn't, but she feels like she can't admit to any struggles or it's betraying her dads. So even when looking for her mom she can't admit she wants one. She can just barely admit to having a self loathing inner voice, but even that is just really hoping it'll pass.
FOX you bpd people are weak ... ohh well might just be me... i was diagnosed with an extremely high IQ and psychopathy at 5 years old, and i used all my mental resources too understand other personality. i spent years just watching others... i could manipulate adults as a child.and believe me when i say. people like you just need too admit, you LIKE see down and fuck up others, you just dont like getting caught doing it. and you have a tendency to get once you have the label of bipolar disease.. damn cherry pickers.. ps iam a true psychopath my understanding of feelings is warped other words iam allllllll ways happy AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Love and happiness are just a trick.
But man, what a trick.
I’ve never come to a much bigger realization when watching this video. I’m a Cosmic Nihilist, and i have so many ideas for the future but i’m just a kid stuck in this body, until someone listen to what i have to say. i believe, i could help create happiness for those who have trouble, at the cost my knowing that this doesn’t matter because it’s forever, and the end at the same time.
oh my god im so glad you guys put true detective in this you should really do a video on the philosophy and hidden meaning of the first season
Woah!! Amazing video! I love both Bojack and Rick & Morty but I have to side with Bojack more here. Eventually it all doesn't matter, but what matters is now. So be real with yourself and enjoy the moments in life for what they are! Nothing more or less!
The Churchlands, cited as support for the cosmic nihilist thesis, go as far as to deny the existence of beliefs, feelings or desire though.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Churchland#Philosophical_views
Indeed, their views are deeply problematic and should not be understood as necessary for cosmic nihilism (or cognitive-centered philosophy of mind btw)
I was specifically referring to the idea that the Churchlands put forth that love should be dismissed outright
Watching this video (and many more from your channel), has finally encouraged myself to study philosophy, Thanks Wisecrack!
Bojack Horseman and Rick Sanchez, what is this, a crossover episode?
Paulo Henrique i caught it.
ERICA!
Feels kinda bad that every philosophical idea I had by myself has also been had by someone else hundreds of years ago, and, apparently, been turned into cartoons.
That sentiment is also a philosophical idea that has been around for centuries. You’re welcome.
Existential nihilism sounds like a fear of destruction which prevents someone from making things, whilst cosmic nihilism is the fear of creation that you can keep destroying but everything will keep coming back.
Kurzgesagt's video on "optimistic nihilism" feels like a good addition to this one
When we give something meaning, we are literally the universe giving things meaning."
Accurately speaking, we are then the universe giving itself meaning. Go back to the ~13 minute mark where Metzinger says "...you...are systems that simulate and emulate themselves for themselves..."
Love and other emotions have no more meaning than a soda bottle exploding on a hot day.
"Understanding the mechanics of something does not mean it has no meaning."
Corollary: Not understanding the mechanics of something does not mean that it has meaning.
So understand it as much or as little as you want, and give it as much or as little meaning as you want. It doesn't matter. We're all going to die, the universe will end, and nothing of either will remain to tell the story. Make what you will out of the time that you have.
I'm curious to know if you have ever thought about doing a Philosophy of the Coen Brothers.
Idk but I would love to see a video on the philosophy of Daria, the cartoon from the 90s. The cartoon has also a "way too real" characteristic to it.

Watching videos about nihilism really makes me forget that I'm trying to ignore my nihilistic tendencies.
