    Surefire started as LaserProducts, LLC under the direction of Dr. John Matthews. His first products were engineered for the LAPD SWAT for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California. I bought my first Surefire product, the original 6P when I entered the law enforcement academy in 1993. I own a LOT of their lights, including several from the Millenium series. I have two rifles with M951 series weapon lights on them, as well as the M500a Handguard system. More recently I mounted the newer M600DF Scout to a rifle, which can use either the 18650 lithium rechargeable or the dual 123A batteries for 1500 lumen. Your assessment of the M951 is accurate, it's bomb-proof. I also upgraded mine to LED with 800-lumen Malkoff Devices lamp modules. There are Airsoft copy-cats being made in China. Some of them are legit forgeries, even using the same laser engravings and numbers. The difference is in the packaging and the "incredible deal" you get on them. Amazon had a bunch of surplus, unissued, M951 kits for a great deal, maybe $150 each. I bought one and it was a legit military surplus. The best bet for an EDC light for capability in my opinion is the 6PX Pro series with the low to high switch (30 lumen to 600 lumen). I use one every day on patrol, even as a supervisor.

    For the commenters, when he said "Blind yourself", he's not talking about not being able to see at all. He's talking about causing blooming that completely wrecks your adjusted night-vision. In confined spaces, you don't need much more than the 65 lumens the original 6P came with. It's plenty for identification and close-quarter ocular overload when directed straight into the eyes. The brighter weapon lights are nice for larger areas and open fields, but searching a standard room or hallway, it's overkill and is detrimental to your own visual acuity. As well as being in law enforcement since 93' (see the previous comment) I've been a weapons instructor and low-light tactics instructor for over 20 of those years. Surefire founder, Dr. Williams, did a lot of research on how the human eye works in low and no-light settings. Surefire as a company originally hesitated to make hand-held lights with over 100 lumens, as they felt that it was not efficient or necessary for normal use. The Millenium series lights were dedicated weapon/combat lights and were the first lights to break that mold being up to 240 lumens in the original bulbs. They only started making the massive lumen lights due to competition driven by consumers who, frankly, didn't know anything about low-light physiology, just that "more was better".

      Seems to be an outdated problem. When I use my stream light tlr1 hl on my glock, I can easily still pick up the iron sights and enjoy the fact that the 1000 lumens ensures defeating the enemy with light before using bullets. I see your problem with night vision, but I raise you 20 years of technological development. There are IR illuminators that civilians can buy albeit at a hefty cost, but if you’re a civilian with nods you can afford them anyway.

    I've still got my original 6P and 9X from when I became a copper in 1996. They were good shit back then!! Much better lights available now, thankfully!

    Great video, cheers from the 🇺🇸!
    Arisaka Defense makes some great conversion mounts to convert this light to the scout light mounting points, if someone is wanting to run this as a weapon light with the modular scout light mounting points. It’s like $20 USD

    • @MaxxHavoc

      Is there any benefit to switching the mount? Or is it just preference?

    • @Timmytango7
      @Timmytango7 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MaxxHavocwell my light did not come with a Mount, so that is a benefit, also if you’re running with an MLOK rail you can buy a direct mlok mount and a conversion rail for the light due to modern lights having a smaller distance between the two mounting holes versus the 951.

    How much does IR light does an LED produce, I have the IR filter on mine which I use.

      If you have a Sportac LED then you be able to get your hands on their IR 850nm LED Module drop-in

  • @OverlandTT
    @OverlandTT 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

    How do the LEDs affect the IR filter?

    • @TacticalSouthnz
      @TacticalSouthnz  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was reading an old forum that might answer this question "white LEDs emit very little infrared light. Infrared filters will not produce an infrared beam when used with LEDs; the result will instead be *no* beam."

    Can you give us a link to the led upgrade? I can't find it online

    • @TacticalSouthnz
      @TacticalSouthnz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry we don't have a link for the LED upgrade as we have sold out of the Surefire M951's. We only have the SporTac P60 XHP35 Single LED Drop-in in stock. www.tacticalsouthnz.com/collections/flashlight/products/sportac-p60-single-led-dropin

      @@TacticalSouthnz so does that mean the XHP35 will work with the M951?

    • @TacticalSouthnz
      @TacticalSouthnz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chebrneck Yes, the SporTac P60 XHP35 Single LED Drop-in will work in the M951 (we are running two M951's with them) and also the older SureFire 6P with the Surefire P60 lamp assembly.

    How is that out doing my Surefire Scout Pro at 1500 lumens? Very cool but that led setup has not been battle proven either.

    • @TacticalSouthnz
      @TacticalSouthnz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First for me is cost, I already own the two M951's so buying a LED at 1450 lumens gives me a weaponlight that is in the same class (lumens) as the M640 (also the cost of the M640 in New Zealand is $640...LED $62).
      Yep I agree this LED isn't battle proven, but...I haven't had to replace any of my SporTac LED's like you had to with the old P60 bulbs. Same goes for my old SureFire 6P (1450 lumens) compared to new SureFire 6PX (600 Lumens).

    Will these drop ins work on a m952v? Obviously they'd get rid of the ir function but just curious if theyll fit in the housing?

      Sorry, I can't answer that for you as I don't know if the Surefire P60 lamp assembly will fit. Hopefully someone else can answer you question for both of us.

      The M952 is the same as the M951 with the exception of the quick release mount. They both use the P60.
