Good job... learning by doing... DIY: the struggles we make can bring great lessons that we apply to tasks later in life or choose not to apply (i.e. maybe some things are better left to others to do and worth paying for). Either way you pay. You can use your time and energy or pay someone from the funds you earned doing something else, but when you DIY, you get valuable learning experience. Evidently you had trouble inserting the bushings onto the threaded shaft of the radius arm because they need to be close fitting. The machine work (it looked like you used a knurled tool to remove bushing material, blue) was to create a "chamfer" or beveled surface to enable easier insertion. Force fitting the bushings with the box-end wrench and a hammer was a good example of improvising to get the job done. Doing mechanic work is all about physics! I hope you guys enjoy your BC Rockies trip... I certainly did, but it was a fast paced week for me. I'm sure you guys can see more with more time... don't forget to bring bear spray to save the slower hiker or biker!
