Hey Justin I just rewatch this 👍. It got me messing w/my Princeton 68RI w/ Eminence Alnico 10. I found a sweet spot that is gig worthy without pedals. v7.5 - t7.5 - b2.5 - r 2.5. Thanks for all you do.
I was watching a Carol Kaye interview in which she said the same thing concerning scales v. chord tones. She went on to demonstrate some of the things she played on and it was so tastefully quirky and musical. I was still dubious that the concept would be valid for all types of music until I heard her playing with Joe Pass. I'm no longer dubious. Fantastic sounds, Justin. I've been in the process of designing and/or copying a tube amp circuit and I've been on the fence about which direction to go. Your Princeton and Deluxe Reverb videos have helped me make up my mind.
I have a 63 non reverb Blackface Princeton. Awesome amp. I have is set up with an original Vox G12 blue Celestion. I bought the amp in 1969-70. I did a lot of mods, I was teaching myself using that, long before it was a vintage amp. I home record guitar and bass through it.
I subscribed about 2 weeks ago when I stumbled upon your "dad band review" video. To your point; there are a billion YT channels about gear, lessons, etc. So what I really dig about your channel is you talk about your experiences in the realm of music. And I really enjoyed hearing your insight on the dad band submission. Great channel, please keep it up!! Oh and I will contribute some of my experiences with a Hot Rod Deluxe. I used to run it as a head, through a Genz-Benz 212 Flex. It really opened it up, and enjoyed doing that for a few years. But I'm now running a Celestion Alnico Creamback, as a combo amp now. While the Creamback does break up quickly (as expected), I don't run it for gain/distortion. Was looking for more of a Strat, straight into the combo, and that has been working out great.
I tried this on my 80 Princeton Reverb after watching the Deluxe Reverb video and it does work great. With a Torpedo Captor X I can finally get the amp up to that level - game changer. Pedal setting also works great - thanks!
Thanks for hitting the PR - to me better than the DR- but both good at what they do. Question- can you show us the mysterious garage and how you run amps altogether? I get it may not be much to see but in the little things you see, you learn- I keep liking this channel more and more- thanks, Justin!
I just discovered that volume up bass down thing a couple days ago even though I've owned this amp for over two years. Yup. I'm an idiot. Also..there's nothing country about me and I could listen to you play all day long! Great channel. keep up the good work
Hey man, you sound like the real deal, both what you say and most importantly how your music sounds, i.e great! I have a Princeton I was not overly thrilled for rock sounds, until I tried your tip #1......hello! Thank you sir and I look forward to you sharing more of your wisdom.
Just great stuff. Love the DR and Princeton. No one wanted them 30 years ago. Maybe consider doing a video on the early Gibson amps? Best deals on class A amps we can afford while the tweed fenders become museum pieces.
Hey, Justin! Love the video (and the one for the Deluxe, too). Roy Blankenship built me a Princeton years ago and put a 10” Eminence Patriot in it. It’s awesome. Might be a cool option if your current speaker bites the dust, and Eminence sells a package of IRs of that speaker pretty cheap so you can check it out without committing too much!
Awesome tips thank you. I have a Headstrong Lil King and your settings resulted in killer lead tones! I also have a Rivera Stage 2 mod Deluxe….gonna play with some of your suggestions also like ext cab! Thanks again for doing what you do.
Hi Justin, I would absolutely give the newer Jensen Blackbird 40 10" a shot with a Princeton. It has a stronger AlNiCo than usual, which makes for AlNiCo sweetness in the top end, while keeping the bass tight, almost or just like a ceramic. The voice is the classic vintage vibe, but with a wider range of useful tones. It's absolutely worth a try once or before your Eminence gives up the goods. Btw. I LOVE your playing. Marvelous!
@heikofister9739 have you tried the Blackbird 10? I have the 12” in a 1980 Fender 30 1x12 combo, which is like a Deluxe Reverb on steroids, and man, that’s maybe the sweetest speaker I’ve ever come across! Totally superb. Perfect link between vintage and modern. I just ordered a Celestion V-Type Junior 10” for my 65 Princeton Reverb, but eventually, might like to settle on the Blackbird 40 watt Jensen, if it’s as good as the 12” version, which still blows me away every time…
Great video. Princeton Reverb are truly such a beautiful sound. I was happy to see your pedal settings are basically where I've come accustom to starting off when trying to add overdrive to a sound. Is it time for an update. Got any new tips yet? I need to try to run mine into a cab.
So funny... The Princeton was just a step up from the Champ back in the day. Never considered a real user. We used them in studio settings for certain things. But it was always the Deluxes, supers and Twins that got the job done. But they were easy to move around and if there just MR and Trbl EQs called for, the Princetons saved your back. It was always your good relationship with a music store to go and borrow one. As they were considered student amps. I think off the floor they cost around $175. And look at the hype and cost now. Little 10". Amazing !!!!
A Celestion gold 10” speaker is so great in a PR. Have one in mine and it lacks nothing. Sounds incredible. Great video. My favorite amp of all time. ❤
Hey Justin, familiar with your work for quite sometime, but only recently discovered your TH-cam channel. Lot of great content for guitar players with studio tans. Keep up the great work!
Great video Justin! I pretty sure I'm the only guy in Nashville that has managed to make a Princeton sound terrible with pedals. That being said, I do dig recording a Princeton and just cranking it! Sounds great!
I have one of those mojotone speakers in my ‘68 Prince. They sound pretty good. I also use a 2 twelve cab with it. Celestion loaded Bassman cab tipped from landscape to portrait if you will. I also use that cab with a Boogie Studio 22 as a head.
Another excellent video thanks!. Princeton Reverb is one of the ultimate amps. Great not only in the studio or in rehearsals, it is great live on small gigs, AND mic'd on big gigs. Soundmen and bandmates (especially singers) LOVE IT when you use a good Princeton. Great for keeping stage volumes pleasant. (Unless you play in a band of Gorillas and Neanderthals, then you may need to bring a Deluxe Reverb.😉) You NEED to get a BF or SF; the Reissues are brittle-sounding, and don't have the characteristics of the vintage ones. I tried them and was sorely disappointed.
Extension cab, OX box, two notes, other cab sim/load boxes. They’re getting better and better. I find that I don’t mind the modeling if it’s just on the speaker/mic/room sounds end of things.
@@JustinOstrander - gotcha - what I didn't make clear? - I don't have a place I can turn the volume up to 10, can't get away with it. Thanks for quality of your content.
I enjoy your podcasts. I am always searching to improve the sound I get out of my amp. I have always been an acoustic musician until recently, but I wasn’t good with the amps and never satisfied with the sound I was getting. Thanks
I totally agree on 12s in a PR. I have a 65 for decades and at one point I added a 65 reissue, mainly just to have a backup and something small to take out, but keep the real deal in the studio. I always heard of people using 12s so I figured bigger must be better and i got the RI with a 12. I know the guts arent 1 to 1 either, but I was surprised how different the two amps are. In the ballpark for sure, but over the years I came to the conclusion it was mostly the speaker and its relation to the cab that accounted for what i didnt like and that I liked 10s better in the PR. Great tips.
Your tone tip really nailed it. Check out a Tone Tubby Humbolt 12" hemp Alnico and change the coupling cap on pin 6, plate on triode B to .001uf on V3 12AX7 to tighten up a 12" speaker. I also change the 100k slope resistor to an 82K and an 8K in series (works out to be a 90k slope resistor) for better dynamics and more volume. The Princeton is so much easier to hulk around than the Deluxe is and it has sweeter tone.
Hey Justin, it's Don again and once again you are preaching to the choir. I put a 12 inch speaker in my Princeton Reverb years ago and use the same settings as on my Deluxe Reverb as I commented on your last video. I have a 4X12, a 2X12 and a couple 1X12 cabs that I sometimes run my Princeton or my Deluxe though.
I have a Princeton and am interested in doing this. I never have so I'm curious how it's done.? Are you unplugging the internal speaker and just using the extension out to the cabs? or running both?
Great tips for the Princeton, I have a Tweed Special Ed. Princeton Reissue. It came with a 12" Can Rex Hemp cone speaker, which was swapped out for a 12" Celestion Neo Creamback. I also modded the little amp a bit, adding a Fromel supreme mod kit, NOS RCA black plate rectifier, Allen Amplification OT. I also have experimented with various preamp tubes, JJ, RCA, Tung Sol, Mullards etc. Currently I am using Genealex Gold Lion 12ax7's, Telefunken 12at7. I will try using as a head as soon as I am able to build or find a cabinet. Hmm ... 1 x 12 or 2 x 12 ?? Thanks for all the great content. As always, wonderful playing Justin !!
I've spent hours down the rabbit hole now watching this channel! Great stuff mate!! The Princeton sits high on my current wishlist, cant wait to add it to the collection! PS - Are the courses you talked about doing in this video available anywhere??
Hey Justin, love your channel, thank you for sharing! I just bought a PR and thinking of getting an 1x12 ext cab. I’m curious… would a 1x12 combo amp be able to be used AS a ext cab with the PR. For example, a Morgan combo instead of a Morgan cab? Would there be any sonic differences when just using a Morgan combo (or other amp with the ability to connect the speaker to an ext source) in this setup? Thank you 🙏🏼
Had a BF Super/Green Echoplex/Mutron III/ stereo cable/ 1958LesPaulCustom. I ran the settings Brite/3/10/10/3/Reverb 3 and MutronIII 12;30. Basically the set you are using except Mutron is used to boost. People used to say "Where you hiding the Marshal?" Those were the days when all that great gear was just "USED" in WantAds.
I have a 70s Princeton Reverb that Kevin Shaw put a WGS 12" into a few years back. About a year ago I got a mids knob put in the back. It's still pretty loud so I can't really dime it.
Nice! I've been impressed with the Eminence Ga10-sc59 alnico 10 and the Ga10-sc64 ceramics. Made for George Allesandro. I have an older Throbak od boost too. Great pedal. Stacks good with my fuzzes and stuff.
I have a 1955 Jensen P12Q in my 65 Princeton (non reissue) and maybe because I have a slab ash cabinet I loved the 12 over a 10. I think the cab is as important as the speaker. I’ve also had the amp voiced more to my liking (heaps more treble/upper mids) so where this video had the treble on 10, I’m happy at 3-4 but I think we’re in the same place. Excellent video mate.
The Mojotone eminence speaker you put in your PR: Is it a 10 inch or 12 inch? Speaker? Awesome playing, awesome information. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
I really enjoy your channel. Your playing and tones are awesome. How do you get your sound without noise? I did hear a tiny bit of noise with the Princeton on this video, but your set up is virtually silent other than guitar. I have great instruments and amps, but no matter what I do I have more noise than I want. I use a noise gate but I don’t like the way it cuts off sound when it still ringing and fading out. I even get too much noise when going direct to my computer. I can angle and hold my guitars just right to stay in the quietest spot. Maybe it’s my guitar room, the electric or something. Do you have any advice on this subject or a previous video you can reference? Thanks
Thanks for this - I came away from the Deluxe vid with the same questions. Stupid question time… how do you ‘safely’ run this out into an extension cab? Liked and subbed…Thanks!
Thanks much for the help - Looking forward to trying this out. I own a few different head/cab setups but have never used a ‘combo’ amp as a head. Cheers 👍
This was back when I just used my iPad to record. The amp is run to a mic’d extension cab in my garage. You’re hearing it coming out of the monitors on my desk.
That is very much on my bucket list! I would love to try out the Celestion Fullback as well as the Eminence Legend in 15 inches. Whatever I play through those WILL be my neighbours' new favourite music 😅
Do you find the 10's in a Princeton Reverb or a Super Reverb to be a bit plunky vs going through a 12" seems more smooth and I guess slightly more compressed? I'm looking for that beautiful Fender amp sound with the beautiful reverb I got from my 1966 super reverb (sold it) but in a much smaller package. I will use it for recording in hotel rooms and bedrooms aka home studio, so I cannot be loud. But I need that Fender clean tone, edge of break-up, as a pedal platform, and also like it would be on 10. Running a 1x 12" cabinet stuffed into a closet might work, but most of the time even that is too loud. I'm thinking a 12 watt 1965 reissue Princeton Reverb with a 12" might be the one. I did LOVE the tones you got on your Deluxe Reverb video when bridging but it's probably too loud. What are your thoughts on this since you have both amps. I'm assuming they are not re-issues.
Yes I have. I did a long video on it. It's fairly recent. You won't have to scroll for very long. Actually, sort my videos by popular instead of recent. And thanks!!
Awesome playing!! If can cranking is the way to go and then control evrything from guitar. Btw Rocking a 12 Warehouse G12CS in mine great speaker for more headroom and getting louder
@@JustinOstrander Yeah the C is to bright for my taste. The CS with the smooth cone plenty bright but not that piercing bright. Keep it going love the video's!!
Yeah these sound great on 10 if you really dial back the bass. Mine came with a Jensen PQ12. Sounds great, but now you have me wondering if the 10" speaker is the way to go. The Princeton on 10 is very loud at home unless you have a setup like he does here, but doable.

I’ve also had the amp voiced more to my liking (heaps more treble/upper mids) so where this video had the treble on 10, I’m happy at 3-4 but I think we’re in the same place.
Excellent video mate.
Great playing and vibe..
I have a july 65 I used to plug in a single sealed 12 into the extension leaving the 10 plugged in too. Loud. Great for bands
Holy Tone blown Batman! Wow.
The Mojotone eminence speaker you put in your PR:
Is it a 10 inch or 12 inch? Speaker?
Awesome playing, awesome information. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
10”!
Thanks
I’m muting almost immediately with my volume pedal. I don’t use any noise gates or noiseless pickups or anything like that.
Thanks for this - I came away from the Deluxe vid with the same questions.
Stupid question time… how do you ‘safely’ run this out into an extension cab?
Liked and subbed…Thanks!
unplug the internal speaker jack... plug in a speaker cable into the same load.. which is 8ohms cab with this amp... thats it..
Thanks a ton for the sub! I do exactly what @chb8037 said. I plug an 8 ohm cab into the main speaker jack. That's all!
Thanks much for the help - Looking forward to trying this out. I own a few different head/cab setups but have never used a ‘combo’ amp as a head. Cheers 👍
Here’s a beginner question, how are you recording your guitar and then speaking to us? Everything sounds so good!
This was back when I just used my iPad to record. The amp is run to a mic’d extension cab in my garage. You’re hearing it coming out of the monitors on my desk.
Omg your playing and tone are phenomenal. Those are p90s?
Any way to get our hands on a full version of your song? Its pretty awesome!
The Princeton running as a head sounds insanely good though a 15" cab.
I’ll have to try that sometime. I have zero experience playing guitar through a 15”. Cheers!
You're hearing both through the same extension cab, a Morgan 112 open back with an ET65. That said, when using them as combos, I like a 10 in the PR.
What a guitar sound.
Well, Justin, when you buy me a Princeton Deluxe. I’ll do it!😊😂
I thought no.1 was gonna be “sell it and buy a house in Nashville”…😉Cheers!!!
Great video! ✌️
Thanks a ton man!
@@JustinOstrander 👍
Way cool Justin! I came up as a musician the same way. Quick question. Have you done a video on your pedal board? It sounds wonderful!
Yes I have. I did a long video on it. It's fairly recent. You won't have to scroll for very long. Actually, sort my videos by popular instead of recent. And thanks!!
@@JustinOstrander Thanks Justin! I found it. Keep up the great work!
Great video! Was the Princeton only going through the Warehouse 12 the entire video? thank you
Yep!
Great sound! Thks for the video. What is the le paul model plse?
R5 goldtop Wildwood spec
question, what is cone cry? thanks for the video.....
Awesome playing!!
If can cranking is the way to go and then control evrything from guitar. Btw Rocking a 12 Warehouse G12CS in mine great speaker for more headroom and getting louder
Very cool. I tried a G12C, but I need to try the S version.
@@JustinOstrander Yeah the C is to bright for my taste. The CS with the smooth cone plenty bright but not that piercing bright. Keep it going love the video's!!
Bet it sounds good in your garage!
Love it. Which year Princeton?
What a fantastic video have a good day
Yeah these sound great on 10 if you really dial back the bass. Mine came with a Jensen PQ12. Sounds great, but now you have me wondering if the 10" speaker is the way to go. The Princeton on 10 is very loud at home unless you have a setup like he does here, but doable.
