Nice comparison. I think the real answer is putting the Alnico Gold in an open back cabinet and using it as an extension speaker. Then you'll have your choice of speaker at any time when recording.
The Gold is definitely better but I think the takeaway from this video is if you are going to use a bunch of delay and reverb the speaker doesn't matter much.
It certainly matters a lot less. I think both speakers sound fine. If I had this amp I'd keep the Jensen. It's a decent enough speaker. I've owned my share of Celestions and they are not all that. I much prefer EVs. Eminence also makes great speakers.
Until you hear it for your self , you cant tell . I strongly suspect that Italy jensen is better than celestion gold ... Specially since Jensen ,newer ones, are harsh sounding . But hay , maybe its your cup of tea, but believe me , HEAR IT IN PERSON. No headphones are helping here
Thank you for this! For the purpose of comparison, however, I'd much prefer to compare sound vs sound, instead of going through several sounds before the comparison happens, it's rather harder to keep track and compare a sound when you are fed other sounds. Just a thought!
I have an early 64 Blackface non reverb Princeton that I acquired about 1970. It has a reissue 12” Vox blue that I put in it about 1990 or so. It made a huge difference over the stock fender 10” speaker. It records well, even bass at pedestrian volume.
The second i bought my PRRI, I removed the inefficient ("crap") Speaker with a Warehouse G10C/S, a true WGS original, has become a favorite of players the world over. With its smooth cone and larger motor, it offers a slightly rounder top end and smooth breakup when driven hard while maintaining the punch and clarity you already love in a 10" speaker. It's really great for taming the top end in bright amps with its warm sound and depth in tone. The G10C/S also remains one of the most pedal friendly tens in our line. So whether you are trying to beef up your vintage combo or build the perfect tone platform, the G10C/S is the place to start.
THANKS I learned a lot here listening through a very good tube HiFi! As always, you can change the sound of an amp by swapping out the speaker. To my surprise, I prefer the stock Jensen P10R. Solidifies my decision to get a second-hand Fender Tweed Pro Junior IV, a 15 Watt Fender amp that comes stock with the same Jensen P10R(!) for a fraction of the cost. But it has a pc board and a tone more similar to tweed amps. Another thing I learned is that I won't be getting in line for a King of Tone pedal. Deeply appreciated all around!
Good video. I'm believer in swapping speakers. I appreciate this. Sometimes a swap is worthless, sometimes it's amazing. This video did a good job demonstrating this.
I have a pair of 16Ω golds in a 62 Brownface Bandmaster in a combo cabinet and they are wonderful. I have a 64 non reverb Princeton that has a G12 blue installed. It’s been in the amp for several decades.
I have Golds in a few of my amps, Love em. That said i also have a quad of vintage1965 Celestion T652, A rare sought after speaker, The golds sound almost identical to the T652 which in turn is a good thing. I like your amp better with the gold.
The Gold to me is THE speaker I use whenever I can.. so your praise comparing them with the Holy Grail T652 just confirms I was right .. for many years 😊 ... just trust your ears, thats all...
I had the stock Jensen (mine has a C10R in a 65 PRRI) for 6 months and for the life of me couldn't get a tone I liked, using a Les Paul and ~7 pedals. The bass was flub no matter what, the treble was ice picky and brittle. Any overdrive sounded completely fizzled and brittle. I could not even begin to approach a clean sound I liked. I popped a Celestion G10 in there and just, wow, it immediately came to life. The bass response alone with the spring reverb is beautiful. I was playing for an hour, thinking my comp and Timmy were on for slight gain - and I looked down and everything was off. The clean sound was just awesome, allowing me to dial in pedals differently to sound even better. The highs are pulled way down into a nice british scream kind of thing, think Pink Floyd "Time" solo's, etc. Before honestly I could see the Jensen being great for country or jazz maybe (I don't touch the latter), but for blues or classic rock the G10 instantly made me love the Princeton, which I was quickly losing interest in. I have the Eminence GA-SC64 10" coming in to A/B, but I expect that will last 5 minutes honestly - the slight hybrid Princeton with UK speaker, specifically Celestion G10, sounds wonderful to me. Nice awesome bass response, a MUCH punchier mid range, handles gain and OD way better, and way less ice picky highs. It also feels like a tank - the Jensen feeling like a toy. I'm not saying that as people say about all speakers - my wife and I heard the difference immediately. It just rounds it out wayyy better, at least with my applications/playing style/genres. HAVING SAID ALL OF THAT - the Jensen sounds better in your video - different amp/speaker/guitars/pedals/environment/listening on a laptop :D of course.
I like them both, when clean, the stock speaker is very warm and the alnico is too dark, but when over driven with a pedal, I like the "flapiness" of the alnico. Great demo Thank you!
My amp tech in England Mike Hill (RIP) once told me 'UK-voiced speakers don't belong in US-voiced amps and vice-versa' and I totally agree. I think if anyone prefers the gold that they really should buy a Vox amp with one in it.
That is funny to me because my first step away from US-voiced amps was to run my Super Reverb RI through a 1x12 open back cabinet with a V30 purely as an experiment. I liked it better than the original Fender cab. I later sold the Super Reverb and settled on early Marshall type amps (through same V30 cabinet) for a few years before moving on to Vox/Celestion Blue after recording with one in a studio. This was before TH-cam, so I had no A/B audio guidance. I still prefer Vox to this day. That was a 10 year journey that one could easily travel in a single afternoon on TH-cam these days. Times have changed!
@@zakhobbsmusic Right, I have the Fender HW 5E3 dlx head and ply it through Blue.. glorious sound 😉..cranked !! Love this demo! Personally, the gold is my favorite speaker… period. That said, listening to both of these, it’s pretty apparent why a lot of boutique amp makers will load a 2x12 with an alnico/ceramic combo. My cab is a 65 Amps 2x12 w/ Gold/G12H30 combo, and it’s a gorgeous blend. Also, when you made the amp EQ adjustments, it really made the gold shine and highlights the necessity of dialing in a rig to your individual elements, speaker(s) included.
I dig how into the technical side of things this dude is. Very cool video...like a hanging out in the studio feel. This is what it's all about. Keep rockin on man, and keep making videos. You're a natural in marketing but overall a badass musician.
I prefer the jensen speaker. Trouble with most guitar players getting a new amp ,they don't wait long enough for the speakers to break in before they change them out. The difference to me is minimal not worth the money .
Ignazio Vagnone here from Jensen Speakers! I know I'm one year late on this video, but hey, it's a great one! The Princeton Rev is such a magic amp... it's one of the key reference amps we use in our R&D lab. The one we have is a 1966, blueprinted and carefully maintained, with a 12" baffle. But we also have a cab with same dimensions and a 10" baffle. The P10R match nicely with the Princeton Reverb, and so does the Celestion Gold. Very different though. If you are mostly interested in cleans and pushed cleans, the Jensen may be more appropriate. If you are more into gainy tones, the Celestion has its typical British rock tone, in large part due to the different cone membrane and the larger Voice Coil (1 3/4", v/s the 1" of the P10R) that delivers that typical midrange aggression. May I say it will sound less "traditionally American", but still it delivers great tones. If you want to have a tighter bass, more midrange focused tone, and still be in the American sonic landscape, you may want to try the Jensen P10Q (1,25" Voice Coil) which sits somewhere in the middle of these two. And if you want to shoot for the top, check out the Jensen Blackbird 10/40... it's like a P10Q on steroids, louder, tighter, bolder. Not by chance, it's been picked by Mesa for the California Tweed 2:20 10" combo, and by Gibson for the Falcon 5 amp... Worth a try, and a check of our new Jensen Tone Sample Library on SoundCloud! soundcloud.com/jensen-speakers/sets Always ready for a nice and nerdy tech/tone chat! Hit me up!
Hello Ignazio! Thanks for commenting and offering your knowledge here - really appreciate that. I've had some more experience with Jensen speakers since making this video :). I bought a vintage '67 Pro Reverb which has the original Jensen 12" speakers in it - those sound amazing. I've also recently picked up a Mesa Boogie California Tweed 40w combo, which has the Blackbird in it. And wow - that is a GREAT sounding speaker. I'm hoping we will be able to feature both of these amps in future videos here on the channel, and we'll be able to let people hear those speakers in action. Here's a question for you (hopefully you'll see this response). Forgive my ignorance on this history of your company - the Jensen speakers in my Pro Reverb from '67 - has the company changed significantly from that period till now? I'm just curious how similar those vintage speakers are to the ones you're currently making. Thanks!
My lifetime make or break project is fitting the Gold 10 into my 1959 Gibsonette.. hell of a task. Even after ungluing the bell, there is soo little precious space left for the speaker to clear the 6V6s.. the slanted speaker board doesnt help it one iota... and who would want to deconstruct that 64 yrs old redwood cabinet.. made with such a natural craftsmanship in those days gone by, that it NEVER rattles, no matter the volume.. and adds to the sound, as if finely tuned ... But I NEED to get the Gold there... in worst case as an extension cab... but then it would not be be my favorite grab and go anymore...
I love a compromise; best of both worlds, so to speak. Jensen Blackbird 40. It’s got the quintessential Jensen Fender tone, but with increased headroom, more lower mids, and more upper mids, with a reduced top treble, compared to the P10R. It’s like the increased fatness of the Celestion, but with a touch more bass and treble, more balanced in my opinion. Sounds like a blend of these 2 speakers. I’d accept either one of these choices in a heartbeat- I love the AlNiCo magic! Great video! 🔈🎶
Both speakers work well. I just found out that Jensen also make those bell covers so it looks like the olde ones. Celestion is great but the P10r is no1 for Fender Princetons and there is a P10r (L) which breaks up at lower volume like the older Jensens. If my amp needed more mid then the Celestion has to be the best especially with a Tele/Esquire style Guitar.
It's interesting because to me, putting a Celestion in actually *stops* it sounding like a Fender. It moves closer to Marshall territory. There's however one Celestion speaker out there that's REALLY common and great on a Princeton (especially if you pop it in a second cabinet or replace the existing baffle), and nobody ever shouts about it. The Vintage 30. Really, really nice with a 65 PRRI.
I like the Jensen that comes in these. They need a little break in time but once broken in they're one of the amps strengths. If I was ever going to replace it, I think it would be with an alnico tone tubby.
A second listen confirms my original comment. The Celestion takes away all the sound of it being a US-voiced amp. The Jensen is perfect in it. The Gold sounds like there's a blanket over the amp. You have to dial out all of the muddy frequencies below 200hz. Vox and Marshall amps sound great with Celestions. Fenders are perfect with Jensens.
Jensen has a much sweeter jangle like a tweed Bassman; both need to be broken in a lot more to open them up. The Gold gives that kind of dry high sparkle of an AC30 but it doesn’t fit with the mid scoop of a blackface Fender in my opinion.
Then Jensen sounds better in situations where the amp would be played solo. The Gold offers much better recording and live mix tones for those who would be using it in that context. The tighter, narrower focus allows it to occupy a specific part of the mix without spilling over into the keyboards or second guitar turf. In my estimation, this makes for a better overall mix.
This demo not only sold me on a Princeton but damn that Duelist sounded killer! I preferred the clarity of the Gold for sure, but that Jensen wasn't bad either! Great tones all around thank you for this!
Jensen all the way, have that Fender crisp sparkle and raunchy ratty breakup that goes very well with the loose Princeton nature, the gold sound darker like a blanket over, too dampen, too thick and blurry mids, sparkly lush fender clean is gone on a smoky foggy honk, if you don’t like amps going to explode a.k.a cathodyne phase inverter falling apart, put the grid stopper 470k or even 1Meg and will give you the articulation and clarity of any other cranked up blackface but the Magic of the Princeton will be almost all gone…maybe you’re looking for any other blackface long tail phase inverter that a speaker swamp will not provide…
I think Fender have been making amps long enough to put the best speaker in an amp. The Gold is just dark and wooly. The best sound at home, won’t be the best in a band situation.
I’m surprised, I usually prefer Celestion speakers? The Jensen sounded very spanky for the first, in a good way. Really nice cleans, and edge of break up. The Gold definitely needed the readjustment of the EQ. It sounded much better after that. The overdriven sounds were very pleasing, without the harshness in the top end of Jensen. By the end of the post, I probably still prefer Celestion?
Thanks so much! That original pack was using the stock Jensen speaker (which sounds very good). We might make another pack using the Alnico gold as well.
@@wttone I actually did a direct Kemper profile of my Princeton with a torpedo captor and threw one of the WT dual mic irs on there and it sounds as good as any of the stock profiles
I use an old 70s pr at church all the time with just a ts9dx the onboard reverb and trem with a Dallessandro ceramic 10 and I just finished a mojotone pr kit. I think you have just pushed me over the edge on the gold for the kit amp to replace the Jensen ceramic 10 in it
I bought a Princeton Reverb RI and it had a Celestion G12 Alnico Blue in it. Great speaker, but not in that cabinet. Kind of destroyed the character of that am. I switched it out for a Jensen P12Q8 and love it. I use the Blue in another amp and it sounds great. All good.
I liked the Jensen for cleans. It had that nice top end tinkle and recessed mids i dig. The gold excelled at the overdriven tone. I wonder what a Blue would sound like in that Princeton? I have an Eminence Alessandro Ga-64 12 inch in mine Nice speaker too.
jensen suits the fender sound better i feel, give me the attack and breakup sound i associate with fender sounds, i feel the gild tries to make it something its not
Super interesting, I wasn't expecting it to shift the EQ quite as much. I've got two friends that swapped golds in their princetons so I was thinking about trying it with mine (which is also the '64 HW). Definitely sounds more pdub ready after the swap, but I don't really use the princeton for church stuff so I'm torn. Thanks for the solid vid
I much prefer the gold to the Jensen. I also much prefer the Jensen to the gold. it's like a hammer vs a screwdrivers. Different tools for different jobs. They sound like different Amps
I hears you loud and clear. Rocky Dennis... These things are good: ice cream and cake, a ride on a Harley, seeing monkeys in the trees, the rain on my tongue, and the sun shining on my face. These things are a drag: dust in my hair, holes in my shoes, no money in my pocket, and the sun shining on my face.
Based on your clips through my studio monitors I would prefer the Jensen speakers without a single doubt. The Celestions sounds less "alive", almost muddy in comparison. The dynamics of the Jensen are straight into your face whilst the Celestion sounds rather bored and boring...
Sort of a lot going on sonically. Single coils on semi hollow body and a amp designed to break up. Me personally I like wide range humbuckers on a thinline. The alnico gold is a 40w vs 25w on the p10r. So it definitely has more headroom. Sort like the Jensen sound a little better? Less compressed warmer? Editing from another comment. That mixing British speakers with American amps is awkward. Have to agree. Like Celestion in Marshalls, but it doesn't seem to work with fender. 6v6 tubes and el34. Just different sonic territory
Yeah it’s interesting. I think the Gold solves a lot of problems in more of a live band context but the Jensen is a very sweet sounding speaker on lower volumes
I got one of these a little while ago. I like the p10r a lot for clean. But hate the way it distorts especially with humbuckers. Been rolling some speaker in it yesterday. About to try an eminence alnico sc59 10 inch tonight. Have tried a vintage Oxford out of a vintage vibrolux, a eminence sc64, a cannibus Rex (way too dark) and trying the sc59 tonight. I have a eminence blue frame alnico I may try too. I really want to try a gold and a Weber f150t still
@@Delboydunno so far so good. I really dig it in the princeton. I still want to try a gold or a weber F150T but for now its staying. In my Deluxe reverb I have the ceramic SC64 and that is a killer speaker for that amp and a lot cheaper than the alnico version. I also like a lot of celestions in deluxe reverb like G12H30 or a vintage 30. youll have to let me know how the SC59 12 inch sounds in your DR!
@@cortmiller thanks! It’s the mojotone kit and I threw a C12n in it and like it. I also tried a Weber 12f150 and an eminence cannabis Rex alnico and to my ears I preferred the c12n. My constant need to swap gear has made me interested in the gold though. I may go that route!
Did you break the speakers in first ? I usually play a month through them before I make my decision. (especially if the speaker has a high watt rating).
I think there's a study behind. If Fender chose the Jensen P10R there must be a reason. All my speakers are Celestion (Creamback, Greenback, Heritage, Anniversary...) never had an Alnico Gold but big fan of it. It's always a matter of taste but I wouldn't spend that money on an Alnico Gold for this type of amp.
The GOLD just has more layers of sound than does the Jensen. And multi effects should be used sparingly, using ONE main sound and a smidge of something else. Otherwise, it starts to sound like racket.
Both sounded great. The gold is nice and smooth. But overall I think I’d prefer the jenson
Jensen sounds great. The gold sometimes sounded warm, but too many times it sounded too dark.
I think Fender did a good job choosing that Jensen. More character in my opinion.
Plus, anything Celestion comes from the spice route.
The Jensen 12 inch speaker my Tone Master came with sounded like someone blew chunks in the cone. I put in a Creamback 12. Problem solved.
Nice comparison. I think the real answer is putting the Alnico Gold in an open back cabinet and using it as an extension speaker. Then you'll have your choice of speaker at any time when recording.

Thanks!
@@wttone It's my pleasure!!! Thank you!
The Jensen sounds great on it's own, but in a mix give me the Gold all day.
My lifetime make or break project is fitting the Gold 10 into my 1959 Gibsonette.. hell of a task.
Even after ungluing the bell, there is soo little precious space left for the speaker to clear the 6V6s..
the slanted speaker board doesnt help it one iota... and who would want to deconstruct that 64 yrs old
redwood cabinet.. made with such a natural craftsmanship in those days gone by, that it NEVER rattles,
no matter the volume.. and adds to the sound, as if finely tuned ... But I NEED to get the Gold there...
in worst case as an extension cab... but then it would not be be my favorite grab and go anymore...
I like the heavier and more efficient magnet .... and it's letting the amp break up more, before the speaker joins in, and that's better too IMHO.
The Jensen sounds so much better.
Golds sound great. Specially if you can pair it with a 12 inch like a g12 GB25 for width or an alnico blue for super sparkle.
Gold is money. You should try the Blue as well with the Princeton!
Maybe my ears just got used to it but i prefer the Jensen on this amp.
I like the Jensen that comes in these. They need a little break in time but once broken in they're one of the amps strengths. If I was ever going to replace it, I think it would be with an alnico tone tubby.
Great video , thats a fantastic amp and both speakers sound great, the Jenson at 4.40 is minblowingly good , fantastic playing
I thought the same thing there was something there that gave it the wow affect just captivating
Jensen all the way for me. Fenders and Jensens have always paired nicely.
The hand-wired version of this amp is perfect the way it is.... For best results, Don't fuck with it!
Jensen has a much sweeter jangle like a tweed Bassman; both need to be broken in a lot more to open them up. The Gold gives that kind of dry high sparkle of an AC30 but it doesn’t fit with the mid scoop of a blackface Fender in my opinion.
Sorry but I prefer the mids of the Jensen. The celestion doesn't sound Fender at all..
Nothing to be sorry about. You like what you like 🎸
Then Jensen sounds better in situations where the amp would be played solo. The Gold offers much better recording and live mix tones for those who would be using it in that context. The tighter, narrower focus allows it to occupy a specific part of the mix without spilling over into the keyboards or second guitar turf. In my estimation, this makes for a better overall mix.
I’m a fan of the Jensen C10R in Princetons.
i could live either speaker. I’m leaning toward the P10r. just a bit more chime or whatever you want to call it. great presentation. 🔈
Both speakers sound great the guitar would too if you tune it! What I really don’t get is how he can’t hear it?
it seems tuning is not so much in fashion here in the internet.
@@toledo2983 Yeh I know drives me mad! It’s the little thing that make the difference but tuning is a biggie.
Your Princeton IR pack are the best I’ve ever heard.
I put a Gold in my Louis Electric Columbia, love it vs. the stock Jupiter
I felt the gold has this smoothness to it. Maybe even a more “round” sound compared to the Jensen. I preferred the gold
Don't be ashamed of that MJT guitar ! That do great paint jobs !!
I'd stick with the jensen
Great chord progressions. Can you do a video of those?
before you upgrade speakers, how about investing in a intonation setup?
Italian Jensens are super bright
All good.
Jenson is perfect in that amp, gold is too dark in my opinion.
The Celestion sounds creamier to my ears. I like it.
Wow- I can't believe I'm saying this but the Jensen sounds better.
Hi, do you remember in which TPS episode Mick uses the 2x gold10 cab with the Princeton?
I liked the Jensen for cleans. It had that nice top end tinkle and recessed mids i dig. The gold excelled at the overdriven tone. I wonder what a Blue would sound like in that Princeton? I have an Eminence Alessandro Ga-64 12 inch in mine Nice speaker too.
I'm listening to studio monitors and the Jensen is like an ice pick between the temples.
alnico all the way , those mids are what a guitar amp should sound like for me preference wise
jensen suits the fender sound better i feel, give me the attack and breakup sound i associate with fender sounds, i feel the gild tries to make it something its not
I have had a G10 Gold in my ‘68 Custom PR. 7 on treble and 3.5 with my Tele.
I made some vids
What would a Greenback sound like in the Princeton?
Jensen doesnt have the 200-400hz boost to my ear which makes it more good for me.
Great video. Thanks !
I prefer the Jenson.
Is a Celestion Gold more midrangey than Fender's stock Celestion G12V-70?
Based on your clips through my studio monitors I would prefer the Jensen speakers without a single doubt. The Celestions sounds less "alive", almost muddy in comparison. The dynamics of the Jensen are straight into your face whilst the Celestion sounds rather bored and boring...
How convenient… been thinking about a hand wired Princeton and just happen to have a Gold laying around. 😎
Since I bought the vintage 1965 Princeton, I’ve been thinking of selling the ‘64 Hand-wired RI…
I like the Jensen much better
Gold or a ceramic hemp cone as well as an upgrade output transformer is needed. Just the speaker is not enough IMO.
The stock Jensen sounded great. Not sure this is one of those "value for money" things tbh.
As often - you get what you pay for 😉 .. I have both, Js P10Rs and Golds.. no contest to me. Both have been played for 15 years at gig volume.
Jensen all the way
GOT to sound better. Wow. The GOLD is so much warmer.
You mean so much darker!
@@RPSartre01 NO. WARMER, sweeter. Yes, less treble. But it is warmer feeling.
Surprisingly, I prefer the Jensen.
Tone match! Yes please 🙂👍
It’s coming for sure
Sort of a lot going on sonically. Single coils on semi hollow body and a amp designed to break up. Me personally I like wide range humbuckers on a thinline. The alnico gold is a 40w vs 25w on the p10r. So it definitely has more headroom. Sort like the Jensen sound a little better? Less compressed warmer? Editing from another comment. That mixing British speakers with American amps is awkward. Have to agree. Like Celestion in Marshalls, but it doesn't seem to work with fender. 6v6 tubes and el34. Just different sonic territory
I think for this amp, the Jensen is the better pairing. The Celestion smoothed out all of the Fender-ness inherent in the tone.
I really want to try a gold and a Weber f150t still
Let me know how you like the sc59. I’m between thy and a gold for my deluxe reverb
Thanks for posting
Did you break the speakers in first ? I usually play a month through them before I make my decision. (especially if the speaker has a high watt rating).
Gold Alnico is nice & smooth, but I tend to prefer the tones with a light girth you get from the Jensen...
Alnico speakers are the bee’s knees!
The truth !
Alessandro is the best speaker for these in my opinion.
P10R sounds better
