This is probably the most useful and concise information available. I've change oil on my cars for 30+ years and this guy is good. I'm about to buy this type of Jeep and needed to see how the filter is different (all my vehicles have had the housing as part of the filter). Great job Rob and camera crew too.
Actually, no. The air doesn’t push anything. It’s that the seal won’t hold back any flow if you take the cap off first, which would be true if engines didn’t have crankcase ventilation systems
@@dr.michaelbennett8597It's called the thermos effect. Go up on your roof and plug the vent stacks to your plumbing--you will no longer be able to flush your toilet or have water go down the drains!

Thank you, it makes me upset to see folks who will drive it but know nothing about how to fix the simplest items on their vehicles. I made my daughter go through auto mechanic's for just that reason. She knew more about fixing her car then her ex husband ever did. What a mook. Anyway it's very nice to know there are especially women who aren't left on the side of the road who can't do the simplest of fixes on their vehicles. Short story. My Daughter and the Mook were on a long trip and the adjustment bracket broke on the alternator. They couldn't find one anywhere in the town they were in. Mook boy said, "What are we gonna do? My daughter said, "Go into the auto parts store and buy some ratchet straps." He did, and she rigged them up to keep tension on the alternator. It worked until they got all the way back home, where they replaced the bracket. Smart lady My Daughter is. Keep on learning about your ride and stay safe out there.
Just changed my oil/filter after watching this! This guy is amazing! I watched Rob and then changed my interior-cabin filter (inside the glove box) and the engine air filter. I never liked changing the old style oil filters that needed the tool/wrench to remove them.. this one was so easy - yet I needed a metric 24mm socket. I have 2018 Wrangler JL 3.6 Lt. I have saved this site as a favorite especially since Rob is so good with his delivery, explanations and filming.
Do I need oil ms-6395 spec , what happened if is not? I'm using mobil 1 since I bought my Jeep and realize mobil 1 didn't have ms-6394 requirements, now days my engine sound like garbage
@@richardgarcia6201 First off, I highly doubt your engine noise has anything to do with Mobil 1. That oil is used in some of the most expensive vehicles on the planet. The Jeep manual for the JL says: "Equivalent full synthetic SAE 0W-20 engine oil can be used but must have the API Starburst trademark". I interpret this as Mobil 1 being acceptable. My Ram requires the MS-6395 spec as well but does not mention an equivalent oil. I use Pennzoil Platinum in the Ram but don't see why the dealer would deny warranty if Mobil 1 is used in the Jeep.
Several sources also mention the following torque specs for those that prefer precision over "snug"... Oil Drain Plug 20 Ft-lbs Oil Filter Cartridge Housing 13 Ft-lbs. No crush washer on the drain plug, but the gasket should be inspected for wear and/or damage.
Just don't forget, no shop on planet earth (including the dealership) puts a torque wrench on an oil pan drain plug or that oil filter cap. 🤣 But thank you!
Yep, too tight you’re gonna crack that oil cooler housing, which is why so many people probably have that issue with the oil cooler assembly leaking, it does not need to be super tight.
Hi Robb... the only item I like to do, is check the oil before I close the hood. I know you just put 5 quarts in but for peace of mind I like to see the oil on the oil stick. Plus if I forgot to put the oil pan plug back in I will know it right away because there will not be any oil on the stick. Years ago I did just that, forgot the plug and all the new oil went right out of the engine. So now you know why I always check the stick before I close the hood. LOL
Thanks for this. I.just ordered a Rubicon with this engine and while having the oil changed on my other car today asked the guy if there was anything special about the oil changes on the Pentastar. He said it needed a special this/that and it would cost $68 vs. the $28 I just paid for my other car moments later. Needless to say, I'll be changing it myself especially since that filter is on the top.
My previous vehicle, it was such a pain in the arse getting at the filter I just paid the $30 - $40 bucks, and had it done at the shop. Now with just a basic oil change costing up to $70, I'll go back to doing it myself, especially with how easy it is on the Jeep.
Thank you, my friend! I have owned vehicles for more than 30 years but thanks to this video, I changed oil and filter on my JL Jeep - for the very first time!
My wife is coming up on her last free Jeep Wave oil change, so this is a great resource. I'm surprised the filer is on top under the hood. Makes things a little easier then.
Do it yourself, use synthetic, literally takes 10 mins and YOU KNOW you’re putting in synthetic, not being told you’re getting it and the cheap shit actually put in.
Thanks for vid, I spent like 10 mins looking for the standard metal can style oil filter thinking I was blind or crazy bc I’ve never had a car with anything else, but little did I know it was under my nose the whole time 😂
Shake up that oil jug for a minute or so. You want that oil to be mixed up to get the ingredients that settled in the bottom to be mixed together real good.
One complaint is you never checked the dip stick after refilling, you should tell people to make sure the oil is up to the full line before starting your engine
I know this post is dated. The 2.0 turbo is actually easier to do because it has a conventional spin-on oil filter. Not that funky paper element one you find on the 3.6!
The only thing I would add would be to check the dipstick after filling, and after you replace the drain plug, wipe it clean, and inspect for no drips a day or two later... and don’t lose the crush washer on the drain plug.
Crush washers need to be REPLACED. Once crushed, they are technically no good for a second seal. Will they work, yes - for a while. Best to replace the < $1.00 washer each change.
I wonder if they have any kind of timer built into the oil change lights algorithm, I've had my wrangler for 13 months now and it still says 50% oil life left. I don't drive it a ton, less than 5000 miles but that's still pretty old oil at this point.
Hello.Hope my question will be answered.I live in Germany and am currently looking for a Chrysler T&C 3.6 v6.Always use 5w-50 for all my v6 cars. Can I use it in the T&C too?

This is prob the stupidest question I’ve asked ever but I just can’t remember. But before draining the oil from the pan, if you take the filter out first, is the filter housing full of oil? Or is it empty and just pump oil up in and through it as it’s running. Cause my housing is empty but the the dipstick says I have the right amount and the oil looks good but the housing is empty
It could be a few things… always check both sides of the dipstick. 1. Didn't wait for the oil to settle if checked to soon. 2. Didn't insert the dipstick all the way. 3. If the vehicle bought was used it could be the wrong dipstick. If not, trust the dipstick if inserted correctly. 4. Possible oil leak I'm not sure how the oil is bottled but there is also a possibility the incorrect amount was bottled from the supplier. I have a feeling they have checks before they hit the stores. I'm sure you figured this out already but if not I hope this helps somewhat.
Great video . So Quaker State , Castrol , Valvoline or Mastercraft oils won't do the proper job ? My dealer filled the engine with semi synthetic, would it last as long as the synthetic oil? I don't think the engine sensors can't identify type of the oil.

Good information
PSA: the drain plug might be 1/2 inch for some models (it was on mine).
And 15/16" for the oil filter
1/2" is equal to 12.7mm so essentially 13mm. Mechanics will tell ya In most applications you can use either/or for a bolt of that size.
The JL uses 0W20 in the 3.6 !?!? Not 5W20 as with JK ? And not 5.8 qts ?
