    One thing I feel needs mentioned as far as the darkling beetles as feeders. Be weary of their exoskeleton hurting your gecko. I used to let my gecko eat them from time to time, and he loved chasing them. I stopped after he got a piece of shell lodged in his gums that had to be removed. I don't know how many other people have had issues with this but that's my own personal experience. Anyway, love the video as usual!

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind that grains contain phytic acid, which binds calcium. Crickets and roaches don’t need substrate. You can also use paper towel for them.

  • @TheWackoGreenAlien

    Hi Rebecca! Tip on Silkworms! I agree that they are RIDICULOUSLY expensive live. So I found an alternative. ProBugs! ProBugs is a company that sells dub roaches, silkworms, grasshoppers, locusts, etc. They are not alive, but not freeze dried. They are freshly preserved! My geckos (Kota and Kalani) absolutely love them! They are large, so I normally cut them in half, but they will eat them even though they are not alive! And this is also useful in case some bugs are illegal that you want, as these aren't illegal to have preserved :) -Jordyn

    could you do a video on how to set up your cricket and mealworm habitat? I saw on a video that you can put the meal worms in the fridge and they will like go into a sleep for a bit but idk if that’s true so a video showing how to set up and store ur cricket/mealworm farm would be great!
    Also how many different bugs should you feed your gecko? If I lm able to get one I’m planing on feeding it crickets and mealworms but idk if my gecko would need more variety.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Live crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Mealworms, super worms, and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better.
      For crickets, all you need is a decent sized container (with air holes and a secure lid), egg cartons, and veggies.

    I usually feed my gecko Pax mealworms, waxworms, crickets, and Super worms. Can I feed her any other kind of worm? She prefers them to crickets.

    Red runner roaches are supposed to be the healthiest insect and most nutritious insect for your reptiles and amphibians. Even healthier for them then dubia roaches or crickets the difference is red runner roaches have the the same amount of protein, calcium, fiber and fat as dubia roaches. Which is more than crickets but where red runner roaches are different is they have higher B12 content then dubia roaches hope this helps.

    There are other species of roaches to try if your geckos dont like dubias, Red Runners (Turkestan Roaches) are popular and quick breeders

    (Not so) Quick question. We get mealworms from a local pet store, not big brand name but a big store, at a quantity of 250, and we take out 20 or so to gutload and then feed our leapord gekco. The store told us to refrigerate the ones we aren't using and take them out 24 hours in advance, but most of them seem to die off before we get to "use" them. Is there any better thing we can do to keep them alive for longer?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could leave them at room temperature but then they’d turn into beetles. You could breed them to get free feeders. Although mealworms are not a healthy staple diet. Feed mainly live crickets or Dubia roaches.

    What is exactly your cleaning crew? A mix of different isopods? How do you control the population (is there a need to?). I would really like to hear more about it.
    Thank you very much. I absolutely love your videos.

    • @kendall4060
      @kendall4060 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Karen B. A cleanup crew is a mixture of isopods and springtails that’s eat decomposing food and poop. There isn’t really a need to control the population because the more there are, the richer the soil will be and the less poop there will be.

    • @petrescuework-difficultcas6581

      @@kendall4060 And as it is an enclosed setup, the amount of food for them is usually limited (if you don't feed them on top).
      So if you fear of them getting overpopulated, just stop feeding them additionally that much. Every population in a enclosed setup will then regulate the population by itself after the amount of food there is provided.
      It's the same as with dove populations in different countries. We have doves called "city doves" here. They live in the pedestrian areas and feed of dropped food, bread crumbs, fast food that was dropped on the floor, etc. If you walk through our cities, there are doves everywhere. It is strictly forbidden to feed them. And sure, this may sound cruel, because if you don't feed them, they might not be able to get their babies to grow up. But feeding them will only increase the population and support their in general unhealthy and miserable lives. So the best you can do (and what you have to do by law) is to avoid dropping food for them. That way their population regulates itself so they can sustain themselves.

    If you want silkworms in the UK your best bet is Amazon or eBay for s decent amount for a fair price I've personally never seen any in reptile stores the problem is with ordering you don't no how many are gonna survive I had issues with isopods constantly turning up dead on arrival paying £10 for 10 and atleast 6 would be dead luckily my local reptile store got them in at £6.25 for 50 tropical grey so I'm currently housing them with my large orange to breed and save me some money and hopefully make it back once they do there thing

    What substrate do you keep your mealworms and morio worms on? What substrates would you recommend and not recommend?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oats and wheat bran aren’t good substrates as they contain phytic acid which binds calcium. Dry coconut fibre or organic top soil without fertilizer would be good for substrate
