Whenever someone asks me if it's hard/a lot of work to take care of a gecko, I always make a joke that they're hardly any work, 90% of it is the feeder insects 😂
Hey, i am REALLY considering buying a leopard gecko but need to convince my parents. I just wanted to ask, can you feed a leopard gecko on just live meal worms or is it a necessity to feed them crickets as well or is it optional? If you can reply that would be great! :D
@@leopardgeckotalk hi I got my first ever leopard gecko last Sunday she was always fed only on wax worms since I got her I can't get her to eat I got locusts and a few Mario worms. Do you have any idea how i can get her to eat other things?
The mealworms come in wheat bran. It is a cheap and readily available substrate that doubles as a food source. The reason that the Morio worms take so long to pupate is because they will only pupate when isolated from other larvae.
yeah im pretty sure i read thats one of the things that contains too much phytic acid, hence why im not using it lol. and yeah i thought that was the case about the morio worms.
I'm getting a leopard gecko this saturday, so excited! I've been watching all your videos over the past 3 weeks and I feel like I learned more than 2 years of uni.
I hear Yanny. I saw a video that explained if you have good hearing, and you’re young you hear Yanny. It’s something to do with the pitch - ASAP science did a video on it :)
The tiny darkling beetles are buffalo beetles, they dont eat a lot of decaying crickets, more so they eat the fass (droppings). There are also dermestid beetles and larvae which are flesh eating worms and beetles and they are great to have in any insect colony.
I have a lot of dark and Beatles and I was Wondering if it’s possible that those could be a cleanup crew for geckos tank? All the research I’ve done doesn’t tell me an answer.
I no longer use bug gel. I use a folded up kitchen paper with water soaked on it . They seem to sit in that for a while and drink from it . Love your video as always great ideas
I recently moved my feeder bugs to a little plastic drawer system as well! It's a really neat idea and looks a lot better! Before I had everything in different sized plastic tubs and it took up a lot of space XD
Thanks to you I have 3 Leopard Geckos, 2 Beetle/Mealworm colonies and now I’ll be starting a Cricket colony as well and later on I’ll add a Dubia colony. I’ve had them all for 9 months and haven’t had any problems with anyone yet🤞🤞🤞 And now I’m in the process of building them a stack reptile enclosure instead of their regular tanks. I wouldn’t have done any of this if it wasn’t thanks to you♥️♥️♥️ Thank you for teaching us a lot and showing us what’s best for our dino babies lol
Hy leopard gecko, just a tip here: to make your morio worms pupate, seperate them into their own tubs and feed them some sort of leafy greens and keep them on a substrate of eco earth when you seperate them. I love your youtube channel by the way!
Leopard Gecko you do, when in groups they are competitive for food. The way I think is easiest to breed them is get a tackle box with the separators put a single worm in each compartment and leave them there in a dark area for a few weeks. Not feeding them is the best way for them to pupate quicker. Once they turn into beetles you can then House the beetles together and feed them (carrots and such) and they will breed and die within a month or so
Leopard Gecko yes, leaving them in a container with no food works well, but the pupae tend to be messed up and bad. My way, they can get extra nutrients during their time in there and the eco earth helps keep it natural. This way, most of the pupae are fine and healthy. You can make a video with this method of breeding. Thanks! I love your channel, keep doing what you are doing! 😝
Finally getting a new Leo this wednesday after a 13 year gap. I've already picked the baby out and I think they will end up looking a lot like Diego and Ziggy, loads of yellow. I plan to call them Sulfur. Your videos have really helped me catch up on all the changes in gecko keeping - and help me stay a little bit calmer as I wait for the big day.
Alfredo Wh second hand stuff is always a great way, it’s how I set up a lot of gizmos tank when I first got her, but it’s always important to disinfect anything that has been previously used.
Alfredo Wh reptile shows sell a ton of second hand stuff. Just don't do that to much with the wood pieces. But the resin designed decor and tanks can be up to 70% cheaper than the stores. Another one is the wish app I found has select over stock of a lot of fish/reptile stuff. If it's safe for fish it's amphibian safe which in turn is lizard safe when it comes to decor.
I raise my crickets on vermiculite (find it in big bags at garden centre, fairly cheap) which helps a great deal with odour and humidity. My crickets are thriving! In case you’re looking for a good substrate 😊
I came to watch this for some tips and stuff which I can say I got them and this video is great but I didn’t realize this was more for geckos lol, I have a bearded dragon but I’m just here to see the set up so I can actually be able to breed my feeder insects:))
I really like your channel I'm getting a leopard gecko and so is my cousin but she's keeping it in my room so I'll probably end up taking care of it and your channels helping me to make sure I take care of it right
For my mealworms and crickets, I used to use ground up dried beans (a variety of types, including dried peas), oats, potato flakes, and bran for their substrate. I didn't ever look into the different amounts of acid, I just figured the biggest variety for them to eat would be better. I'd give them fresh veggies, but would pull the leftovers out after an hour or so to keep mold issues away. The last leo died at age 9, so the beans didn't seem to harm them. I'm glad to see more science going into the feeder insects diets now, and will look into it more if I decide to get a new leo.
I am currently trying to persuade my parents (mostly my mom) to let me get a leopard gecko. I have just been bingeing your videos and even taking notes from them! You have been such a tremendous help with everything and thank you!
Lovely and helpful video as always! I love your videos so much even if I just have crested geckos and one madagascar giant daygecko! Also I really like that you' are "just" a normal person. Thank you so much for every video and please keep going!
Morio worms (superworms) do pupate fastest on their own. What I did was take a 6qt Tupperware and put a few tiny deli cups inside. I placed one worm in each cup and left them alone on a shelf. No food, and the lack of companions stresses them into pupating. I got several beetles with this method.
RC Dean Mealworms and superworms will gladly eat wood. Just wasn’t sure if she was concerned if that would effect them nutritionally or if the feeder food she adds would be enough to counteract any substrate they eat.
This was a great video!! I’m always eager to learn more about feeder insects as sadly it’s a bit of an ignored topic for some people. Have you considered using a three drawer system for your mealworms? In the system, the beetles stay up top, eggs fall through a net (cut a hole in the drawer and glue one in) and into the middle drawer, and then you pick out the pupae and put them into the bottom drawer. I’ve found that this works great but I’ve actually seen you use it. I highly recommend breeding mealworms this way!
Not, really. There's a lot of wrong things about this video. I breed 5 different kinds of feeder insects. Dubia, lateralis, golden crickets, mealworms and superworms. 1st the worst thing about this video is using wood shaving, you should never use wood shaving to mealworms and superworm, petshops use it because most them don't know how to care for them and some use it because they don't want you to learn how to breed mealworms or superworms so you will constantly buy from them. Second superworm only pupate when they got isolated because the other superworms will eat it when it turned into a pupa, there are rare cases that they do pupate but very rare. 3rd silent crickets are only juvenile crickets. 4th you should put your feeder insects in a much bigger enclosure that is well ventilated. Lastly crickets need a lot of hides and space to keep them from killing each other. If you got successful on raising your own feeder insects you will almost never buy insect feeders again, maybe just a few every now and then just to introduce new bloodline to keep their genetic healthy.
Tip save little plastic lids from things like bisto flavouring granules, or small container lids, place food and water gels on top of that, easier to clean, prevents moulds etc...
I just upgraded my cricket enclosure from one of those little critter keepers to a decent sized tub with lid. Poked a bunch of holes in the lid, laid down some aspen, egg crate, and set the crickets free in their new home (before being sent to their impending doom lol). In some strange way, it actually made me really happy seeing them with all that space to hopefully enjoy their life for a bit....
I don't think the substrate they come with is wood shavings. I am not sure about the place you buy feeders particularly, but the substrate is usually a mix of different types of flours and similar materials, with the main ingredient being wheat bran if not only wheat bran, which I think the one in the video is.
Leopard Gecko also places them in a dark humid and hot place and cover them with a blankets if you have one for at least 1-2weeks until they turn into pupae
At your normal pet store. In the US petco and petsmart have it (just not the Arcadia stuff, in the US just buy the fluker cricket food). In the UK or other places primarily online. Just depends who you want the seller to be. Or you can feed vegetables and all that stuff and get the same result

At 9:47 there is a bug that kinda looks like a mealworm, but darker in the cricket enclosure 😂 idk why I keep noticing these things. It's near the right side, close to the top. Lol
@Leopard Gecko Hello from America! I recently discovered your channel and love your videos! They are very informative and I have learned a lot about how to take care of my little Leo. However, there are a few things I am confused about. If a 5% UVB light is provided in the tank, how long should it be left on? D3 in the calcium and multivitamins is also not needed with this bulb, correct? I now understand that both multivitamins and calcium powder should be given weekly, with an emphasis on calcium powder, however, if I am gutloading my crickets with Fluker's cricket feed and hydrating crystals, should I still be giving my roughly four month old Leo pure calcium power three times a week with a calcium dish in the tank as well? Lastly, I give my Leo phoenix worms instead of mealworms, and while these have a very good calcium to phosphorus ratio, does this impact how often calcium should be supplemented? Thank you very much for your wonderful videos and positive impact on the Leo community!
iMiku the light can be on for a few hours a day, make sure it’s a tube bulb. Make sure the supplements don’t have d3. Since another name for those worms is calci worms you might not have to dust them with calcium at all. Dust with calcium every other feeding and vitamins every three feedings (with the crickets) :)
Fiona Shepley Thanks, what makes the tube light better than the full coverage? I went to a reptile shop and they told me full coverage is better but I can see reasoning behind both.
Yeah I've heard that superworms eat eachother when they're pupating... So you definitely have to separate them if you're planning on breeding them. Once again, I don't know if that's true but Iknow that I've read that somewhere.. Best of luck!
I've successfully bred super worms "Mario worms?" Many times. I get little condiment cups and put them in a box, wait 2-3 weeks and check on them many times. I buy the 50 worm cups and do 30 at a time. With about 30 worms I get 20ish beetles. If needed I can email you pictures and everything on how to breed the beetles
What are good beginners food for leopard geckos. I would think crickets but my parents are scared of them jumping everywhere but I am nervous about mealworms pupating.

The insect is transferred to a new cage, given a last meal, then they get executed by the gecko

Its a cleaning beetle. Alot of cricket breeders keep these beetles in the bins to help clean up dead crickets and such.

where to you get all your feeders and can you give mealworms to cresties?
Where did you get the three tier drawer thing? Love your channel by the way
@Leopard Gecko
Hello from America!
I went to a reptile shop and they told me full coverage is better but I can see reasoning behind both.
iMiku petstores rarely give good advice. Full coverage ones are ineffective and have a higher chance of harming them
PLEASE REPLY. What aspen shavings do you use for your meal worms?
Hamsters and such With cadence just make sure the shavings aren’t cedar or pine as these are toxic to leo geckos
For the meal worms you should use raw oat meal as your substrate
Hiya, do you find the crickets escape from the tub? I'm kinda worried to have crickets invading my life.
Charlotte Peake I can’t remember the last time a cricket escaped for me
What's the stuff called your dusting in the wood shavings
Yeah I've heard that superworms eat eachother when they're pupating... So you definitely have to separate them if you're planning on breeding them. Once again, I don't know if that's true but Iknow that I've read that somewhere.. Best of luck!
Thank you for answering what the zucchini was...i was like what is a (badly misspelled) corgect? corjet? korjet? :)
haha courgette :)
Super worms will only pupate on their own I'm about to start my own colony of them and I have to buy tiny cups to put them in
What are good beginners food for leopard geckos. I would think crickets but my parents are scared of them jumping everywhere but I am nervous about mealworms pupating.
Dubia roaches.
This is irrelevant but I absolutely love your accent especially with your voice!🤧
