One additional design flaw is the plastic corner caps at the tailgate end of the cover. They are secured by a very weak plastic clip and break off constantly. I have had to replace mine several times in the 6 weeks of ownership. Bak has sent replacements, but this is not a good solution. They have acknowledged the problem and say a fix is “in the works.”
Thanks Brad, I just bought the Bak X4S yesterday and will install next week when it arrives. I live in Oregon and we get plenty of cold weather with snow and ice. I would assume that many of the retractable tonneau covers have the same issue, but as you said and others You Tubers would buy it again. Thanks for the video.
I live in Western NY and am considering one of these anyway. Never had a bed cover before, but this one seems like a good candidate with the snow we get. I would think that brushing the snow off and letting the sun do it's thing would probably work for me, unless anyone has a better idea. I'm not a fan of blocking the rear window like some of the fold-ups do. Thanks for letting us know about the colder weather problem.
Same thoughts here; it was very useful to see what the limitation was actually like. It should matter less if you can park your truck under cover too (garage or shelter so the frost doesn't get to it). Reading some of the other reviews and 1 thing is definite: it was not designed for extreme temperatures (very hot Texas, very cold North) but they do seem to be making improvements with subsequent versions... see the felt on the X4 versus the rubber on X4S. I am concerned about the plastic-like corners where it meets the tailgate though... in very cold, you'd think they might snap if you try to move or unstick them if they are frozen... Latest specs seem to indicate the warranty is 5yrs now compared to 3 yrs on the Bakflip MX4. Cheers!
I love this cover. Yes it sucks when the weather freezes but I can overlook that one flaw. I have had no problems in 100 + weather, maybe because I put ArmorAll protectant on it. Would recommend to any of my friends.
Of course it would be hard to roll. He had a very thin layer of ice on it. He had to break the ice at all the joints and then had the broken ice keeping it from rolling tight. That condition would be difficult of any cover, and much worse on a soft roll up cover.
@@dav2386thor It was the least expensive Revolver back in 2016. Only had a 2yr warranty back then. They sold me another “upgraded” Revolver in 2018 for half price. Only lasted 3 years and I tossed it. They don’t last in the heat. The glue delaminates
Thanks, the freezing info is very important. It didn't look very cold. At my location we got -40°C and lower. Does anybody know if it's still reliable at very low temperatures?
Just bought this for my recently delivered 22' F-150. *Disclaimer* I've never owned a pickup truck before (so no experience with bed covers or anything), but this thing is great, so far. My dad has a retractable on his Sierra that was dealer installed, and I think he may be considering getting this instead. I love the low profile, security, and reliability. I'm in Houston, TX where it doesn't typically get too cold, even in winter, so I don't think I'll have many issues, if at all, with it freezing in place. I've also heard the manufacturer for this is fantastic.
Glad i watched your review. I was curious to how it would work covered in ice or frozen snow/slush. I think I will go with a trifold which is not much better but at least you can partially fold it if you fight a little or heatgun the seam.
Love the design. Quality is not as good. Bought the first one with the truck. Lasted 2 yrs and delaminated. Vinyl on top shrinks in the summer heat. They replaced it but I’m already seeing dimples in the second one after just one summer. They recommend using 303 protectant which I do regularly. Will be surprised if it makes it through this summer here in SC. Would not buy another with out at least a 5 year warranty.
Same here, I’d really like to get this but the price is the only thing holding me back. I love a good quality product but a soft roll up cover is $300.
@@Heavy-C I agree with “you get what you pay for” but a properly installed soft cover won’t be flapping in the wind. They’re cheap but not disposable. I had the same cover on my old truck for almost 10 years no issues. My new truck I’d like to get a better cover but hard to swallow the price of the X4S.
@@93lopezi every truck I see with one driving on the highway it's flopping around and looks like crap. I live in South Texas, so it's hot pretty much all the time. That likely has something to do with it, but it just turned me off soft covers all together.
In Texas I have been through 2 covers in 5 years the sun will bake the vinyl cover so it will shrink , crack up an pull in from the sides . Also the felt material underneath peeled off . Bak did one free replacement under warranty but then you're on your own. they offered my a 5% discount on a new cover. In short in hotter climates don't use this cover. You will get around 2 1/2 years per cover.
Had one of the first versions of this cover and never had any issues with rolling in freezing weather. They must have changed something to cause that issue!
There is more than one major flaw. These don’t hold up in one summer season in Texas at all. Vinyl will shrink and pull away looking horrible. I won’t ever by any of their products again. They did replace it, but after my 1 year warranty expires I’m stuck with a $1200 paperweight!
I may be mistaken on the warranty period. I purchased on Amazon and thought it was one year total. Regardless product is junk. My previous rolltrax lasted over 11 years with not one issue and will probably last 11 more for the new owner.
I live in canada, i often drive down to carolina.. so i know what the weather looks like in carolina…you guys are lucky to have palm trees.. here in canada these tonneau will never hold up.. it will freeze between september to may. And it will cook in July.. i was about to order with with my next vehicle but i think i will look elsewhere.. too bad because i do like the sleek design.
I also live in Canada. It isn't going to matter what vinyl rollup cover you get, if there is frost or frozen water on it like in this video.... it's going to be hard to roll up. I wouldn't base my purchase strictly on that. If you do, you should be looking at a different style of tonneau cover altogether. For me, these are great! I can roll it up and not lose box space or have a wall of panels behind my cab. I plan to put an ATV in the box of my F150 and this style is by far the best solution for short box pickups. I had a Diamondback cover on my F350 for 15 years.... it was great but removing those panels to carry something like appliances was a real p.i.t.a. This style is perfect for me...... just need to find one that is built well. I have narrowed it down to this unit or the Truxedo Sentry CT
I have the Ford-branded x2(?) on my F-150. Love the cover but the clasps to hold it rolled up are a pain and, as you said, when winter sets in, it is a pain to roll. This video pretty much solidified me getting the x4 when my Super Duty arrives in a couple of weeks.
Glad I watched this. I want a hard cover for slight edge in security. Might not spend my money on the rolling and get the flip, i just dont want to block backglass.
informative video. There's are indeed some 'enhancements' BAK could do to make their very pricey covers a little more durable for all the different environments.
One of the best revives I’ve seen to date on this product. Just ordered for my 21 Sierra. Previously had the MX 4 folding. Your review was concise and straightforward with all the information anyone could ever need to make an informed decision. Thank You
I haven’t done it but you’d just need to unscrew four hand knobs and lift it off. When putting the cover back on just line the cover up with the tailgate before tightening it.
Mine friend has the original one in Minnesota and hasn’t had issues. The best one I had here for winter MN is a retrax, otherwise every other one I had struggled.
That makes no sense. There's no kind of roll-up top that will roll when the joints freeze. In the south, just throw some water on it because it's not 32° outside anymore. And if it is 32 degrees, Guess what, you probably should have planned earlier knowing it was going to do that. It's not like we don't know here in the south. Good grief. The delamination problem is a bigger issue in the south and a deal killer.
I haven’t had any issues yet. Bird poop that was on there for about a week washed off. We are getting major pollen drop right now that is mostly washing off just using a garden hose or a good rain.
if only they would redesign that back edge (tailgate end) to be one piece and integrated with the corners instead of using those plastic cover caps they've been using for many years.

How has the pull release held up?
I access my bed6-8 times a day.

The pull release has held up well but the top cover over the aluminum has started to peel up this summer.
Awesome review man. I'm impatiently waiting for mine to ship
wow, won't work when frozen. glad i saw this before I bought. last month we had HIGHS in the single digits...
Wow that is a huge flaw!
its not that it wont fold, its that the rails dont align well with the plastic slats and they get stuck.

How hard do you think it would be for somebody to pry in the middle above the handle to try and get access to the bed?
With the right tools probably not that hard. Won’t keep the professional thieves away but will stop the rubber neckers
