There is no such thing as a press pass in the UK. There is no government body to issue them. If there was then the government would be able to censor the press by not issuing a pass. What there is is employee ID (BBC, Sky, etc) or union membership (NUJ) cards. They just identify a person. They also show that the person's intent is news gathering. There is press accreditation but that just means that a journalist has agreed to produce positive or complimentary news for an organisation in return for getting the accreditation and better access and also to get access in the future. Accreditation just means control of the news. Also called prior restraint.

I am confused by your comments regarding the tape now legitimising the closure? In my opinion you still had a legitimate argument to go and take your coverage as you weren't part of the protest as accepted by the inspector on the other side. The closest argument for the closure probably comes from the last copper you spoke to as they were using that area for their resources and a safety zone to retreat into should the need arise. That was probably the better reasoning for them to use rather than threatening arrest for the Section 14 infraction and can't really be argued against. The police don't need to put physical barriers and signs up to restrict access, it just makes it easier for them and releases coppers for other activities. They can create the cordon with a line of coppers as they did in the first video, but the cordon needs to be lawful irrespective of how it is created.

The press card is recognised by all the Police forces the membership card isn't. if you're covering it and publishing it "as a member of the public" you're participating however if you hold a NUJ Press Card you're recording it for media usage. I was down there last night. I parked my lorry just down from them. I had a walk down and They were incredibly peaceful. I felt bad for them with the rain but applaud their dedication.

My experience of the many Palestine protest groups are, the majority are Palestinians living in the UK, the rest are mainly British born who are peace protestors, against arms dealers generally, no one needs to have been to Palestine to be educated on whats going on there, although plenty have indeed, been there.
