Gotta say, this comic makes Cap really look like a true hero. When someone is blaming himself for what happened, Cap reassures him it wasn't his fault and that, while there may have been better courses of action, telling *someone* was good on him. When everyone else is arguing over what they might have done to make Mitch do drugs, Cap reminds them Mitch is the one who needs their support right now. And of course in the end, he doesn't give a big speech to Mitch about what a terrible choice he's made and how it could ruin his life, he just lets him know his loved ones are here for him, and when he needs help getting through tough moments, he can turn to them instead of drugs. Really awesome.
Agreed. This may unironically be one of the best depictions of Cap. An utter badass when fighting his opposition but still has the little people in mind and understands them. Kudos to the writers.
You know, there us a difference between Prescription Drugs and the dangerous Narcotics that we normally call Drugs. I don't consider Cap hypocritical here.

I half-expected from the beginning part that the aliens would be doing something completely insane like mind control to get people to take the drugs but no - his story of /why/ he ended up taking drugs was surprisingly compelling and believable - he wasn't a bad person, or peer pressured into it, or rebelling stupidly - he was feeling like crap, and drugs offered a way out of that. And the way the adults responded was... well, to try and help him STOP feeling like crap! If they were like this, I'd love MORE PSAs of this nature!!

Such as making it one time use and adding the Vita-Rays to stabilize it. That being said, William Burnside was definitely a Captain America who should be on the receiving end of the PSA. And maybe Red Skull if you go by his MCU origin...

Technically that is accurate, as while Cap got his abilities from genetic enhancement, his actual level of physical ability is only at the very peak of human prowess. So while he exceeds any olympic level athlete in all areas, he's not like Hulk level powerful. But it doesn't matter since he's so skilled and badass he makes it count.

Comics' idea of not having superpowers is a bit different than what other people would agree to. So a "peak human specimen" in comic books like Cap or Batman would be considered superhuman by our standards. Therefore feats like dodging bullets is not that far out there. Love the "Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue" reference. I grew up watching that special and still love the humor and some of it is funny, now, because the facts are sooo out dated. But it had good intentions when they made it.
I got to admit, I watched this episode just now with my two-month-old puppy, and while I was also keeping the little guy from teething on me with a towel, this PSA Hell was rather enjoyable to watch.

It's commonly cited that Captain America got his powers from drugs, but to be fair that ignores that Captain America got his powers from legal drugs administered by a medical expert. He wasn't approached by some seedy guy in a back alley in a trenchcoat offering bootleg superpowers. Admittedly I _would_ read that version of the origin.
Whenever you review one of these crazy, off-the-wall older Marvel comics, I'm always reminded of how everything Marvel has ever published, even toy line tie-ins like Rom, are considered part of the overall Marvel Universe, then I remember how popular Marvel has become in recent years thanks to cinema. When are we going to get a movie featuring Ulysses Solomon Archer teaming up with Brute Force to stop the Tzin peddling drugs to kids?
I do love that Captain America is an in universe USO show bought to life, there legitimately a reason for him to be a walking PSA in-universe. He is the crime fighting version of Sexual Harassment Panda.
To give this comic an additional point of credit, the aliens' plan does at follow some train of logic. It's not perfectly sound, but by PSA standards? There's at least an attempt to explain why villains are pushing drugs that almost makes sense.

"I have the strength of 20 old men." Which is like the strength of 5 men in the prime of their lives, if the old men are lucky. Admittedly, this is still impressive for a single person, but not quite as good as you think it is.
I always like hearing about the historical background of some of the comics as well as the behind the scenes material in HOPR, heck I've probably listened to SF debris' history of the comic industry series a dozen times by now.
I see everyone else has already gotten to the whole "super serum-empowered solider is a bit of a weird choice for drug PSAs" bit. XD But hey, for a PSA comic, that was pretty solid. As you say, it helps that the comic knows the tropes and prefers to focus on the more human elements -- why a kid would turn to drugs, the stress a young person with a visible talent might suffer, how drug use affects everyone around you, but how the people you really love will be on your side. :) That said, can you imagine the stress poor Mitch would be under if he knew the reason the alien monster gave him the drugs was because he was apparently going to be a super-important baseball player and he was targeted specifically to see if an invasion of Earth would be worth it? Woof. . .no drugs in the world can help you with THAT knowledge.
It is a nice change of pace to see a PSA actually addressing the root causes of substance abuse and addiction, as an unhealthy coping mechanism for stress, instead of pretending it's a whim that comes out of nowhere aided by mephistophilian drug dealers.
Well Linkara it took 10yrs but you reviewed not only a comic I know very well but this was the very first comic I ever acquired, I got it at a grocery store , and it still has all the coupons and everything
To be fair, helmets don't help prevent concussions. Those are caused by the brain getting hit against the inside of skull, which happens when the head is whipped around. He could've given him a concussion without super strength.
I mean to be fair depending on which drugs he was taking it could effect his performance in various ways. Like if it was something like weed it could lead to him having less control of his arms which could lead to wild pitches of various speeds but something like PCP could actually cause him to throw harder because he essentially removed the brains limiter temporarily.

Although the movie was not a success, they could have built a franchise with the sequels as the main problem with the movie was that it had few fights and the rangers clothes + megazord didn't look good (and the fact that they cut certain scenes that helped the story and made it look more coherent), but that could easily be changed in a continuation. You know, I never understood this about superhero comics (and I am a MAJOR superhero comic fan) but like... why do these criminals fight superheroes? I mean... this comic shows ALIENS INVADING! Why do these drug dealers fight Captain America when he has saved their lives and will save their lives. It’s like trying to kill Superman. First, how ungrateful of a bastard are you to kill a man who probably saved your life 16 times! Second, even if you could... what about literally every other evil being? I like to see Lex finally kill Superman, and then Darkseid comes in and Lex is like ‘Hah, Superman will stop you and oh shit...’ or like HYDRA topples the Avengers, only to be attacked by Galactus. Seriously, I get being evil, but unless you have the serious fire power to defend earth or at least retreat it, just stop fighting superheroes! They not only saved your life, but will save it again!
Well, the villains like Luthor or Doom who want to rule the world, they probably think they can take care of the aliens themselves. For regular crooks . . . criminals are stupid. A lot of people who commit crimes do it because they have poor impulse control and don't think of the consequences. They're probably thinking in the short term, "I gotta steal this thing/evade arrest/get revenge", they're not thinking about the long term consequences of if they do kill superman.

It's commonly cited that Captain America got his powers from drugs, but to be fair that ignores that Captain America got his powers from legal drugs administered by a medical expert. He wasn't approached by some seedy guy in a back alley in a trenchcoat offering bootleg superpowers.
Admittedly I _would_ read that version of the origin.

Whenever you review one of these crazy, off-the-wall older Marvel comics, I'm always reminded of how everything Marvel has ever published, even toy line tie-ins like Rom, are considered part of the overall Marvel Universe, then I remember how popular Marvel has become in recent years thanks to cinema. When are we going to get a movie featuring Ulysses Solomon Archer teaming up with Brute Force to stop the Tzin peddling drugs to kids?
I do love that Captain America is an in universe USO show bought to life, there legitimately a reason for him to be a walking PSA in-universe. He is the crime fighting version of Sexual Harassment Panda.

To give this comic an additional point of credit, the aliens' plan does at follow some train of logic.
It's not perfectly sound, but by PSA standards? There's at least an attempt to explain why villains are pushing drugs that almost makes sense.
You should really cover the Green Arrow/Green Lantern storyline where Oliver learns Speedy is a junkie. Now THAT was a powerful drug statement

Which is like the strength of 5 men in the prime of their lives, if the old men are lucky. Admittedly, this is still impressive for a single person, but not quite as good as you think it is.
I always like hearing about the historical background of some of the comics as well as the behind the scenes material in HOPR, heck I've probably listened to SF debris' history of the comic industry series a dozen times by now.
I really like this one, yes it's a PSA but it still really feels like a Captain America comic here and his portrayal is actually very good.
Cannot wait for the next ep-I always thought those issues were hilariously cheesy.

I see everyone else has already gotten to the whole "super serum-empowered solider is a bit of a weird choice for drug PSAs" bit. XD But hey, for a PSA comic, that was pretty solid. As you say, it helps that the comic knows the tropes and prefers to focus on the more human elements -- why a kid would turn to drugs, the stress a young person with a visible talent might suffer, how drug use affects everyone around you, but how the people you really love will be on your side. :) That said, can you imagine the stress poor Mitch would be under if he knew the reason the alien monster gave him the drugs was because he was apparently going to be a super-important baseball player and he was targeted specifically to see if an invasion of Earth would be worth it? Woof. . .no drugs in the world can help you with THAT knowledge.

It is a nice change of pace to see a PSA actually addressing the root causes of substance abuse and addiction, as an unhealthy coping mechanism for stress, instead of pretending it's a whim that comes out of nowhere aided by mephistophilian drug dealers.
Well Linkara it took 10yrs but you reviewed not only a comic I know very well but this was the very first comic I ever acquired, I got it at a grocery store , and it still has all the coupons and everything

To be fair, helmets don't help prevent concussions. Those are caused by the brain getting hit against the inside of skull, which happens when the head is whipped around. He could've given him a concussion without super strength.
I mean to be fair depending on which drugs he was taking it could effect his performance in various ways. Like if it was something like weed it could lead to him having less control of his arms which could lead to wild pitches of various speeds but something like PCP could actually cause him to throw harder because he essentially removed the brains limiter temporarily.

Although the movie was not a success, they could have built a franchise with the sequels as the main problem with the movie was that it had few fights and the rangers clothes + megazord didn't look good (and the fact that they cut certain scenes that helped the story and made it look more coherent), but that could easily be changed in a continuation. I just hope everything goes well from now on.

You know, I never understood this about superhero comics (and I am a MAJOR superhero comic fan) but like... why do these criminals fight superheroes? I mean... this comic shows ALIENS INVADING! Why do these drug dealers fight Captain America when he has saved their lives and will save their lives. It’s like trying to kill Superman. First, how ungrateful of a bastard are you to kill a man who probably saved your life 16 times! Second, even if you could... what about literally every other evil being? I like to see Lex finally kill Superman, and then Darkseid comes in and Lex is like ‘Hah, Superman will stop you and oh shit...’ or like HYDRA topples the Avengers, only to be attacked by Galactus. Seriously, I get being evil, but unless you have the serious fire power to defend earth or at least retreat it, just stop fighting superheroes! They not only saved your life, but will save it again!
Well, the villains like Luthor or Doom who want to rule the world, they probably think they can take care of the aliens themselves. For regular crooks . . . criminals are stupid. A lot of people who commit crimes do it because they have poor impulse control and don't think of the consequences. They're probably thinking in the short term, "I gotta steal this thing/evade arrest/get revenge", they're not thinking about the long term consequences of if they do kill superman.
