This install procedure is a good guide for most vehicles- as the MacPherson front strut/shock and spring rears setup has become common place for most automotive manufactures.

Just have to say ive watched a lot of Mazda 3 repair videos and just love yours your very detailed, your camera setup and lighting are perfect I can actually see whats going on and you keep the instruction slow enough for me to keep up. Keep up the outstanding work.
Other DIY videos are saying it's dangerous to handle the spring while compressed and recommending replacing the whole assembly. But it looks so easy on this video.
In europe you cant get the whole assembly kit, you have to do it this way which is BS.
I find all of your install videos very helpful. Thank you for putting in the time and sharing the knowledge.

Perfect timing! I have a Volvo S40 (same exact suspension) and I am extremely disappointed in the coilovers I installed last year because the ride quality it awful. I'm going back to stock but will be replacing the struts as well. I used your video for installing the coilovers...now I'm using your video to take them back out again, lol, so thanks for this!!

thanks for the little tip there as the Mazda approach of bludgeoning the knuckle to death was a slow and painful one! LOL I put that washer in there, put the pinch bolt in backward and bam the new strut slipped right in there! Thats for saving me a bumch of time and for your video which helped me install some Koni Sports and some Eibach Pro Springs!

Excellent video. Well lit, great smart work-arounds (spreading knuckle instead of beating it to death and using 2x4 and jack to remove shock from knuckle) and not too long. Subscribed and thumbs up.

Just something I did that I found to speed up getting the knuckle off the shock instead oof beating it with a hammer is to take Your scissor jack and a 2x4. Put the 2x4 on the knuckle and then put ur jack ontop of the 2x4 and jack against the bottom of the spring plate then spray penetrating fluid around the shock and it’ll pop right out

when I did mine, I just put a piece of wood across the knuckle and banged on it until the knuckle loosened from the strut.
Why didn’t I watch your video in addition to the dozen others I saw. Your method seems one of the better and least physically taxing.
Do you think you stripped the bolt because the knuckle was spread a bit much?
Another way to remove it was to use a bottle jack which worked great but I didn’t have.

Thank you so much i've learnt so much from watching your videos. Do you have any possible solutions for hard to engage gears on a manual 3 sedan i've been told that it could be that the cables are sticking.
Yep - also had success with KYB. Some of the top struts nut are deeply recessed ... it took me 2 hrs to get it out today. O.o Next time will get a pass-through socket.
I watched 2 videos and this one was more detailed, including torque spec's. I will add that it does look like she is working with a very new car. After 18 Canadian winters everything is a little rusted and none of the fasteners came off easy. I cut off the links that go from the strut to the sway bar and luckily the nearest parts store had 2 in stock. I've also used a big sledge hammer free up the strut easy enough. A little harder getting the new one in, some hammer blows on the side helped. Anyway just a word of caution but by the time your struts actually wear out the car is going to be a little harder to work on than it appears.
Cool technique for separating the knuckle but do you think that might be how you stripped the bolt? I wouldn't think so but just curious.

Mazda actually suggests beating the unit? That does not sound like a Japanese process. Your process is much cleaner and I appreciate the thought behind trying to solve the problem rather than creating new ones.

Any chance you would take a request for a video? I need to straighten out the steering wheel (it is canted ~7 degrees from center). I know it is a matter of adjusting the tie rods, but if you had any tips that would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you get more than 60k mikes out of your new KYB's. Also, you must have gotten really luck on disassembling those end-links, which can be difficult to remove. I wind up cutting mine out......good video AS ALWAYS....Thx!
Please don't waste you luck with loaded springs unless you know how to do it safely first.
I'm surprised the spring didn't have a rubber seat on the bottom support.
Anti-sieze paste on threads and finish by spraying the exposed threads and nuts with rust protection. Anybody who will work on the car will have a joy to wrench it!

Koni yellow shocks which are also adjustable. They're a bit expensive but worth it.

i changed shocks on 05 mazda3 curious if it's the same sh on 09 mazdaspeed3. diff shocks of course.
The springs are stiffer (and probably shorter) and the shock and struts more aggressively valved but the fitment between the first generation Mazdaspeed 3 and Mazda 3 are the same. You can definitely interchange the shocks, springs and struts but one thing you should consider is the ride height. The Mazdaspeed 3 rides lower then a Mazda 3. It probably won't hugely impact the front alignment but the rear wheels camber will be off because the Mazdaspeed 3 has shorter upper control arm. It might be a good idea to pick up some used Mazdaspeed 3 upper control arms on eBay to correct the issue. They're usually pretty cheap on eBay. As far as the second generation the front struts are very similar as the first generation but the rear shocks are slightly different. The bottom of the rear shock that bolts to the lower control arm is more narrow. You can still definitely use them but in order to make them fit you will need a few washers to put on each side of the shock. Hope this helps!

I've replaced my all car shocks to KYB shocks but the back shocks made noise when I had to reverse or fall in hole ... my car is Toyota Aurion 2011
Maybe the shock mounts were worn out did you replace those as well?

Putting the bolt on backwards is really risky because it'll strip the threads. Just buy a cheap spreader tool off aliexpress. You can get either socket that you just twist or you can get an actual spreader tool that's a little bit more expensive. You can build one with a grinder too + a 8-10mm hex key.

How do your hands stay so dam clean, its like there is some kinda force field around them or something? i only have too look at a car and mine look like ive just come off a 12 hour shift in a coal mine. but seriously i want to know the secret having clean hands would be nice.

Before you decide to start to work on the car, put a barrier cream on, like Eucerin Cream an hour before you start. It will soak into your skin and act as a barrier to protect too much grease from getting ground in. For the most part, if you look close at the other vids; it looks like the areas are power washed or cleaned ahead of time. This is not only a good thing to do before making an instructional vid but anytime you're going to work on a car. It saves from getting dirt and grime from getting all over the place, saves on the fasteners from getting rounded off since there isn't a load of dirt on them which might cause you to use too large of a socket or wrench. Trust me, it's happened to me when I was a kid. I still keep 2 separate racks of regular tools; 1 SAE in 1/4-3/8-1/2 drive and the same in metric. The second rack are all 6 point in all 3 sizes and deep and shallow but they are graduated in 1/64 increments. Yes, an old school master set, but they always come in handy when working on other peoples cars. Those 1/64 sizes will fit both SAE and Metric that are rounded or beaten so bad a 12 point wont work. BTW washing your hands after with a little WISK laundry detergent, and that stuff has been recommenced for decades to clean engines, engine bays and other parts loaded with grease, as well as getting it out of your clothes. I even remember my Grandma using it when I was a kid on my Grandpa's clothes, he was a mechanic at the factory near their house. It got everything out. I use it in my garage too to get out the oil stains off the floor. I just pour some on, spread it around and pray a little hot water on it, wait an hour then scrub. You never even notice there was a spill there.
My left rear strut is leaked out. Should I replace just that one or on both sides?
Both. You always want to replace them in pairs
He's right. Anything on your car that goes bad on one side should get both side replaced. It's not only safety but it's cheaper financially in the long run.
unless they're Gabriel struts then they're good for about a mile or two
how did you learn all this stuff?
Not so much to learn even if the steps could be different on different cars. You just disassembly everything and and assemble it in revers order. You learn best buy just doing stuff. Don't be afraid to work on your car(if it's not electronic and stuff). If you mess up there is always internet. Learn by doing and your mistakes.

compressing a spring is really scary. Some cars need an alignment after replacing the shocks.
powcar91, completely agree. just fork out the $40 bucks and have it done at a machine shop. less worry and less work.

how is the underside so effin clean?
Like myself and most of the good small auto shops, pressure wash or use GUNK Heavy Duty gel engine degreaser, to clean the undercarriage and engine compartment ahead of time. It makes the job go quicker, cleaner and it's easier to spot any new leaks or issues when doing a test drive ahead of time to ensure that what they, or myself, thought was all that it was going to need. Plus, when the customer gets it back nice and clean, they feel better that you did a more thorough job than most and can see if there is any other leaks at a later date.
