Really great information- I replaced my insignias top mounts with non GM mounts and had knocking over bumps, replaced again with GM Mounts (about £10 each extra) and no more knocks! I couldn’t believe it, but there is very slight up and down movement on the non GM bearing which was causing the noise !

I get knocking at the front whenever I use Sachs dampers from ECP at the front - three different vehicles (Skoda, Audi, Renault). In each case the knocking started within a year or so, and not huge mileage (less than 20K IIRC). With the Renault, the damper function was also significantly impaired - on sharp turns the outer front corner dipped horribly.
I contacted Sachs and they assured me that they ECP do sell genuine Sachs parts. All the dampers were bought 2016-2020. All balljoints and bushes were fine on all three vehicles.
I switched to using KYB dampers for all vehicles and I've had no further problems, even after high mileage and rough roads - and I love the ride!!
I've also previously had no problems with OEM dampers from VW. I've had no trouble with Sachs clutches and DMFs.
Anyway, I've posted this in case it helps anyone here with knocking that's not caused by the top mount.

Nice video, was listening very closely, I have recently had both front struts replaced including coil springs and top mounts, but since my garage replaced them (I supplied the parts) It has developed a knocking noise on a certain situation only, such as manoeuvring my car out of my drive onto the road, there is a hump between my drive and road, when I reverse out and the rear wheels have gone down the other side of the hump I get a 'Clunk' sound as I turn the steering to get onto the road, now this can happen going in reverse or forward over the same small hump, but no clunks at all when driving normally, only when manoeuvring over this hump or somewhere where the same situation occurs!
Now the only thing I can assume is that when I assembled the parts to make-up the strut assembly, I decided not to torque down the centre retaining nut where the shock absorber rod goes through the top mount, so left a note with the struts to inform the mechanics that it will need to be torqued down, but I am beginning to think that maybe they've forgot to torque down the nuts and that's why it only makes a clunk when going over a hump where the rear wheels are down the hump and the front suspension is being unloaded as the rear of the car goes down causing movement at the top mount !
What do you think ? it could be something else, but it's quite a solid sounding clunk ! it's definitely from the front suspension and getting a little louder week by week ! The problem here is that I have a Volvo C70ii 2011, and the top nut is underneath a thick solid plastic cover preventing access to the centre nut to check for tightness, so was thinking of cutting a hole in the plastic cover to access the centre nut, rather than having to undo everything from underneath to get to the nut ! Any advice or ideas would be appreciated please.

Great tutorial I believe this is my issue. You covered all the important stuff. My issue occurs over the very small bumps in the road and I had originally thought it was bad tires due to the ribs on the freeway. Would a bad strut cause any of these similar issues? Also noticed that my 2 month old control arms failed... would a bad shock top cause rapid wear of control arms?

Oh my god I've been chasing down a suspension problem in my car for YEARS. What you describe about the ripples in the pavement from the mount not being connected is PRECISELY what I feel. It's like the shock absorber is solid and is unable to iron out the micro-ripples in even very very very smooth tarmac. It presents like a small wheel balance issue, except it's frequency is not related to speed and can be felt even at very low speeds (10 or 20mph). it just makes the car feel like a crummy ride, instead of the luxury car it should be.
and it's because some knucklehead at the shop didn't replace the fucking shock mounts, when I thought they had, many many years ago when I first tried to solve this with new shock absorbers! Holy shit.
Thank you so much for this, I came across your video while doing my research as I've had growing suspicion about the car not feeling right, and that something in the shock assembly is just not correct. I will be inspecting them and hopefully replacing them shortly. Cheers!

Very informative. We had both front suspension struts, springs and top mounts replaced 10 months ago on our 2007 SEAT Alhambra. We've done 5000 miles of normal road driving since then, car developed knocking noise a few weeks ago, took it back to the garage that did the work and they said one of the top mounts has broken. They are going to replace it for free, but any ideas why it could have broken so soon? When they did the suspension repairs some of the exact parts (springs and bushes) were no longer available so alternative parts were recommended by parts supplier and fitted.

    Hello Cud,
Thanks. Is it true that ANY movement of the top nut in the retainer assembly warrants replacement?
From my understanding on my Mercedes e350 AWD, there normally should be some small visible movement as the strut cycles. I have a horrible strut knocking sound accompanied by symptoms of worn out shock absorbers , Sachs.
The shocks have only 30k miles on them so I really need to rule out any other possible sources. I replaced the top mount and the knocking persists as well as a modest amount of movement within the top mount.
Appreciate any update insights you may have.

I recently purchased a used car and almost immediately noticed there was a creaking sound as well as quiet clunking from the front of the car when driving. Brought it back to the dealership and they said it was the struts, and that they replaced both. The creaking went away but then there was a new sound.. a loud bang near the front right of the car, only when going over a speed bump. It honestly feels like every time I go over a speed bump, an iron fist comes out of the ground and punches the front right of the frame. Wild, I know. The sound is loud and scares the crap out of me every time I go over a speed bump. Took it back to the dealership and they said, "oh, there were some loose bolts. We toghtened them, should fix it". I went over a speed bump and BANG! The same iron fist punching sound. Never heard something so loud and am not sure what could be causing it. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.. im so frustrated at this point.. and terrified to drive my own car.. that I just bought!

The only advice I can offer mechanically is that you may need to check all engine and gearbox mountings.
I suggest that you do some research regarding consumer protection legislation in your area to see what your rights are in respect of returning the vehicle or having the vehicle repaired at a reputable workshop with the dealership fitting the bill. It seems crazy that the dealership is attempting to repair the vehicle but returns it without test driving it to make sure that the repair was successful. It doesn't matter if the vehicle is used, it needs to be sold in reasonable working condition and you've given the dealer ample opportunity to repair the fault so look at what your rights are
