    I replaced my Struts on my Honda Pilot after it was making a clanking noise when going over bumps. It fixed the problem and I soon realized how bad the struts needed to be replaced becuase of the difference it made. Also good to mention that the car needed an alignment after replacing them.

  • @PotatoeChipz

    Looking good brotha. Struts and shocks are one of the easiest for the lay man to understand because many people have driven a bicycle. Applying the concept of a mtn bike shock to the car's shock/strut is identical. How to identify a failing vehicle strut:
    1 - the oil is coming from the strut
    2 - oil around the shaft
    That's about it.
    If no oil is leaking but there's a knocking over bumps and uneven cornering, the upper strut mount needs to be replaced but not immediately necessary. Generally a worn strut and/or strut mount won't throw off the alignment too much and rotating the wheels every 5k (oil change) would be good. This doesn't apply to the other 10% of vehicles out there.

    Also, check to make sure that your upper and lower control arms are intact on the front and the back. As, they can be completely detrimental to the control of your vehicle. Mine, I didn’t know were rusted in spots, and when I changed out my air shocks for my Land Rover… When the shocks went back up, it broke the one in half and if it wasn’t for the shock, essentially holding that assembly together… The wheel could’ve essentially been free to go left or right by itself and could’ve taken my vehicle out of control and wrecked it.
    So be on the lookout for those on your vehicle when you change out your shocks, just to make sure. Especially if it’s early 2000’s to maybe 2010… and especially if you live by the ocean or in an area where you get a bunch of snow and they salt the roads. Which can less than the life of any metal part on your vehicle.

      They're not expensive if it's a basic vehicle, around $60-75 a corner online for basic kyb (even cheaper with spring sales/rebates). Cheap Chinese sensen are like $120 for four. That's pretty cheap for such a vital component that makes a huge difference in making an older car feel newish.

  • @veronicas44

    I am experiencing all the symptoms too on top of going through second pair of tires in less than a year. Mechanics say I went over a hole and lost the alignment, the car has 60k miles and it never happened for the first 50k miles of driving. But the mechanics claim suspension is all good and new because it’s not visibly damaged. I really doubt that anyone actually does the drive test to make sure they just look at it and say it’s fine, unless some mechanics do?

      google these... Bluedriver (NO recurring fees) or Thinkcar (recurring fees). I have the bluedriver and it totally saved my rear today. I am 1K miles from home and all of a sudden a bunch of errors were thrown. This caused my VSC light to go on AND cruise to totally STOP working (important to have cruise when traveling 1K miles back home). Bluecar allowed me to scan and find out all issues AND reset ALL codes so my cruise worked again. It probably saved me $500. - 1K in the last 12 hours in potential tows and BS proposed shop fixes... It is also not necessarily see a leak in the shocks. For me every time I decided to change them and when I inspect them I see that they became very loose. Very small force were enough to compress them. That means also that the car is carried by the struts and engine mounts only... You can imagine how the dampening and vibration be in this case.
    So my advice to myself is to change them regularly regardless of their conditions. Say 60-70 km are fair enough for them.

  • @charleshines2142

    I also notice poor traction as a result. When I make a turn in bad weather such as snow it is easy for it to cause the vehicle to drift. This is because of the excessive body roll and poor weight distribution. Also I am sure that a lot of us notice in traffic how the back end of a vehicle sags when it first starts off from a stop. This is a sign of the shocks wearing out.

      Do a quick inspection of the springs making sure they're not cracked, then lift the boot on the shaft of the strut to see if they're dry. If all checks out positive--no need to replace. They're not a maintenance item. More a suspension part as to what type of road you drive on for the life of the vehicle. Hope that helps

Only here it when hitting holes in the road. Any advice? Hate to do all the work to take the strut out and still not be able to tell if its bad.

      @Anthony Roic I just learned that I over filled the oil in my car by half a gallon. Is there a chance that the excess oil can spill out of the oil dipstick, into the engine? I think I may need another oil dipstick.

    • @Joe_334
      @Joe_334 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Anthony Roic Dude I could talk all day about how to maintain cars. Not that I know everything, but it would help to DIY the car if I ever have to, like the rack and pinion. Came close until I got to the two C clamped 19 bolts, on a 97 camry.

    • @Joe_334
      @Joe_334 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anthony Roic yeah, I would drain the oil. Not sure if oil dipsticks could fail overtime, since I have never had to replace one before.

    • @Joe_334
      @Joe_334 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @behexen250 this one is a 2001 Toyota camry. I have never seen oil spill near the dipstick before. Maybe there is a lesser amount of oil to put in the 2001 than the 1997. It was smoking a bit under the hood. The oil spilt from somewhere and must have hit the manifold. There was some more on the engine strut and on the engine near the oil filter. Like a mild spill.

    Hey, I watched the video and none of the symptoms I see in my car which has over 100K miles on it. There is a thumping noise coming from the back(right rear) on my car when I go over an uneven surfaces. 1) Please tell me if bad or failing shock can make a thumping noise? 2) Can "center nut" that keeps upper shock mount to the shock stem, become loose and make thumping noise? 3) The noise is most likely coming from other components(sway bar links, bushings)? Which of the 3 do you think is more likely the issue? Thanks!

    • @lancepage8768
      @lancepage8768 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The noise you are talking about? Is it like a rattling noise when going over bumps. Most likely sway bar links.

    • @Charkatak
      @Charkatak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lancepage8768 No, it is kind of a dull thump. I looked at the sway bar bushings and these look good, so are the sway bar links. Just wanted to know if a shock can make a thumping noise?

    • @Charkatak
      @Charkatak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sergiomunoz928 I have not done anything yet and just drive like that. I suspect it is the rear shock

    • @sergiomunoz928
      @sergiomunoz928 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Charkatak I have the same common issue too after not doing anything to it cause few mechanics couldn’t find the noise where it’s coming from and tells me the shock n strut “looks” good but doesn’t actually take it apart which that’s the only way you can tell, but trust it’s annoying and terrifying to hear that thumping noise from the right rear side. But I’ve had it, told myself to just replace the whole thing. Lol so I’m getting my shock/top bracket mount replace on Monday and hoping that’s will fix it.

    Did you know that the equations that describes motion and forces of the damper and spring are the same for an electrical capacitor and inductor. In fact early analog computers were used to simulation these mechanical devices since the equations are the same..

    On my 2008 Altima, I did all the test but all of them checks out. But when I’m driving on the freeway and there’s an uneven road, it rocks like a boat side to side. So I completely removed the spring and tested the strut and yep, busted shocks!
    The monroe struts for some reason was busted on the top 2” of the struts and works fine further down. Probably the reason why the tests I did passed.

    When I press down on my front end I get no bounce, I can’t even push it down,when I try to lift the car at the fender wells I can’t get it to budge either, yet when I hit a little dip in the road it the front rocks up and down like shocks were rubber bands
