Dewalt DWS780 | 12 inch double bevel sliding mitre saw

  • The Dewalt DWS780 is a 12 inch double bevel sliding mitre saw, the blade is 305mm or 12 inches. This sliding mitre saw has a 1675w motor and is powerful enough to cut the hardest timber. This mitre saw uses XPS technology to illuminate the blade, which creates a shadow directly where the blade will cut, this is much more accurate than a laser and will never require calibrating (unlike a laser). The Dewalt DWS780 has 5 speed settings, which means you can cut harder materials at slower speeds when required. The maximum cross cut at 90 degrees is 349mm, although by using a 38mm deep board you can cut up to 16.1 inches (409mm). This machine will cut through the hardest of timbers with ease and will give very accurate cuts when used by a skilled operator. You can find these machines for sale on ebay- fave.co/1mNntE1

Good trick there with the board to extend the cut. I do something similar on my 254mm chopsaw, I made a base and back fence from some conti board off cuts, doing this allows me to use 210mm blades on the 254mm saw and still get a proper cut, great for me because I have some very fine tooth blades in 210mm from my old saw and they are great for cutting laminate flooring and other delicate materials, saves buying extra blades.

I have this model, purchased it a few months ago and I like its versatility, accuracy and ease of use and depth of cuts.
I am a bit annoyed at the fact that is does not come with essential accessories except for one vertical clamp.
The following accessories should come with the saw as standard and save the hassle of going out again and buying them. Would the manufacturer please take note, it may even help your future sales.
DW7082 Vertical Clamp (second clamp to save you from changing over each time).
DW7084 Crown Stops for the DW780 Mitre Saw x 2
DW7051 Length Stops for the DW780 Mitre Saw x 2

I just got this saw and was doing the calibrations for tweaking up the miter and bevel angles.
For the bevel, I measured the angles by using the blade with a digital angle ruler. One span of the ruler on the base and the other span lined up against the blade. The 0, 22.5, & 45 degree left bevels were a bit off so I made the adjustments. I made sure that the ruler was totally flush against the blade and not on the side of a saw tooth.
Then when I did some practice cuts on real wood (2×4’s and MDF pieces), the angles were slightly off but extremely consistent. The 0 degree cut was off by 0.3 degrees, and the 22.5 and 45 by about the same. Noting the direction by which the bevel cut was either too shallow or deep, I tweaked the adjustments so that he actual cuts on wood gave 0, 22.5, and 45 degrees.
I made sure the ruler was zeroed out and calibrated throughout and made these measurements all a few times to make sure and check if they were consistent, and they were. I also used a 7” square to confirm the 0 degree cut on the wood - the cut was flush with the later empirical adjustment for the actual wood cut, whereas it was slightly off with the angle ruler 0 degree set on the blade.
Now when I measure the blade with the digital angle ruler, it is off by the amounts that the cuts were off before, which is what you would expect if things are consistent.
Question is: Why is there a difference between what is measured with the ruler calibration on the blade, vs. how it actually cuts? Does the high RPM on the blade change the blade aspect or something? Does the force between the blade and the wood change the blade aspect?

I don't think anyone will be able to tell you exactly what the problem is because its going to require trial and error to find the inaccuracy. My two cents:
      1. One of the measuring instruments is not accurate. I actually find this to be fairly common especially among newer tools. Basically the new affordable tools we all reach for often aren't built to the standards we would expect. In most circumstances it isn't noticed but when it comes to accurate angles it becomes evident.
      2. The blade might have a slight wobble, be loose, or off center slightly.
      3. The arm or sliding operation of the machine may be defective. Ive heard the type 20 motor of the dws 780 has horrible problems with the sliding feature, so much so that many users return it immediately. So this proves Dewalt quality control isn't perfect.
      4. The surface you are measuring may be true but the extended surface where the material rests might have a rise or depression that is unmeasured by the short protractor, and in turn results in a bad line when placed on the table.
I took my measuring devices to work to have them double checked for accuracy. We have a machinist shop with known accuracy. I found one of my squares was off more than I would like, another was was accurate to within .002" So that could be an option for you. Find a friendly machinist shop to allow you to double check your devices. Good luck.

only one little thing you missed out. It is possible to go beyond the 49 degree on bevel cut. For xample, if you tilt the sawhead to the right you push or pull a lever almost at the bottom below the locking wheel on the left side of the bottom. And vice verse if you tilt the machine to the left. Then you are able to do even greater angles than 49 degree bevel cuts.

Dewalt still make the best mitre saws on the market I have a 12 year old dewalt DW708 that is in almost daily use and has been well abused. I love it and will replace it with a dewalt if it ever dies. I'm by no way a dewalt fan boy and actually don't rate a lot of there newer tools but the mitre saws are the best in the business. They would kick the arse on a Festool kapex.

I'm seriously contemplating purchasing the DWS780 and DE7023 leg stand in the next few weeks but was wondering whether to purchase an additional blade as many manufacturers seem to ship their saws with inferior stock blades. Yes, the fence is dead straight.

Sometimes they get knocked during transit and need adjusting before they are accurate.

This is the DWS780, it has XPS on it- as far as I am aware the XPS is just the LED light, which casts a shadow of the blade onto the work piece.
