    This camera is a fantastic camera, don't get me wrong, but it's just weird to be bringing this out with what they already have out, and like Gerald Undone said, it's not a true cinema camera as it doesn't have time code, built in nd filters, dci 4k, true 24fps or even shutter angle. I'm glad we have someone like Mark though at the end of the day actually using these cameras for their intended purposes rather than just vlogging with them and adding terrible Peter Mckinnon styled B Roll.

    I've got to say, when I read your community post about this video and how people complained(?) you didn't mention the A7SIII, I also thought it was strange to not do but now after seeing the video, it felt like a really fresh take to review the camera on its own merits with spending two thirds of the video comparing it to the A7SIII like most other youtubers done (which is totally fine and I understand why because they really are similar in a lot of ways).
    Anyway good job and I really enjoyed the footage you manage to get out of that camera.

  • @CraigMod

    One good hack for the lack of record button on the handle - remap the button present on many sony lenses to activate recording. This is also a boon for shooting in manual when you want to keep your left hand on the lens. Hold top handle with right hand, lens with left, and with left thumb start / stop recording. Works perfectly.

  • @Efficiencyts

    Maybe TH-cam compression is messing with the footage but 400,000 ISO actually looked useable to me! Obviously not ideal but totally useable in my opinion if you need to use it for some reason.

    I actually did replace my BM camera with the Sony FX3. I’ve always adored the color science and codecs that BM offers, but the FX3 just offers so many incredible ease of use features that you just can’t get anywhere else for the price. I wish it had shutter angle and false color, but otherwise I love everything about this beast.

  • @roxics

    Wait, when did not having an EVF make something a cinema camera? To me that's a major negative. I want an EVF, they are super useful and I shoot with them all the time on my cinema cameras. To me the lack of EVF makes this not a cinema camera. At the very least I think Sony should have included an EVF that you can mount on the hotshoe or on one of the 1/4-2 mounts all over the camera.
    Also the lack of built in NDs is a turn off as well. At that price, I don't want to be dealing with NDs on my lenses anymore. Other than those two things I think it's cool.

    • @Quicez

      Yep. Silly stuff. There's no significant advantage of the camera over the A7SIII. An XLR unit could be bought for the A7SIII. There are lots of cages for the A7SIII, which are far more versatile than the screw holes on the FX3. Marketing is serious stuff and fools even clever people.

  • @BrianMakesFilms
    @BrianMakesFilms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    My only big hesitation with it is no internal variable ND. At nearly $4k, that makes it a no-go for me personally. If it was in the $2k-$3k range it'd be a no brainer add on, but I just don't see it justifying itself as much different from the A7Siii. Or during a pandemic justifying itself in my workflow. That said, if I could sell my FX9 + accessories for $12k, it'd be a no brainer to switch to an FX6 and FX3 setup from the FX9. But not sure in this market that's realistic right now.

    • @TylerMcCool

      I definitely agree. On board ND is becoming more of a standard (thankfully) and there are a few options out there like blackmagic and z cam that are beginning to offer it. Maybe they can make a variable Nd adapter like canon has? Idk 4 grand for something with no proress or Nd is tough even given how great it is in low light.

    The FX3 rolling shutter is there but I mostly see it during hand-held footage, specifically during the camera operator's foot steps or any small but sharp bumps to the camera. It's a very subtle jello cam effect, vs global shutter or film cameras that look rock solid even with no stabilization at all. I may be looking at it with a harder critical eye than other mirrorless cameras because of the "cinema" designation, because compared to other full frame mirrorless cameras in the same price range or lower, it's quite good! If anyone wants a faster readout speed but doesn't want to break the bank, go with a smaller sensor like m4/3, my ancient GH5 has near global shutter quality. Otherwise, I'm loving the FX3!

    As many have pointed out, your statement at 9:05 is silly because your left hand was 0.5mm away from a second record button. This is clearly visible at 10:26.
    For timecode, it's not too bad as you can mount an external "DSLR" type timecode box and connect it through input 3 on the top handle. Which brings me to my next point.
    This is meant to be much more portable and versatile than the larger cameras like an FX6. One awesome feature that I use when filming events (like a wedding) is that I can set the FX3 on a tripod somewhere in the church, pull up my Imaging Edge Mobile app, and wirelessly monitor the video on my smart phone. Add that to the mobile functions of some external timecode boxes - boom, got yourself a some very useful "one-man band" wireless features.
    My biggest complaint is why Sony cannot do a very simple change to the shutter display setting. I don't care if they lie to me, I just want to see it - Shutter Angle. I'll be happy if I'm shooting at 23.976 FPS and it tells me 1/50s is 180 degrees even though it's slightly off and isn't a true 180 degrees.

    They went with 12MP because it allows fast readout and minimizes rolling shutter. There is no more light per pixel no matter the size of the pixel. Theoretically there could be less noise bleed between them though higher resolution sensors are already demonstrating the irrelevance of this theory as well with the more recent sensors.

    I mean..it's the A7s III let's be honest here. Can easily buy the top handle and hot shoe mic adapter from Sony and you have the same setup but an EVF. Yes, price-wise this is a bit better but they should have just added built-in NDs and add a couple of hundred bucks more to make this worth its own release. If I saw in the release properly, custom button 6 is also a record button. Maybe slightly less awkward than crossing your left hand under the top handle to hit record, especially if your left hand is already on the lens. I've gotta see more reviews and discussion about rolling shutter, interesting that you found it basically a non-issue. Some pan tests I've seen with the A7SIII and FX3 make it look fairly pronounced. Either way, built in ND's would've 100% sold me.
    I currently shoot stills + video on a Nikon Z6, so definitely compromised a lot on the video side. So as a jumping off point for a non Sony user interested in video, it almost makes sense for me (cause I've already got a lovely little stills camera, no need for A7SIII EVF). But, factor in an E-mount lens that can take advantage of the autofocus of any of these cameras as well as a XLR mic, and I'm pretty close to an FX6 body.
    Anyway, great video, you seemed stoked to use it, which maybe is half (or 1/4) of the battle. If it inspires you, then you can't really put a price on that (Z6 + cage + handle + Ninja V + external battery for only 4k30 10-bit 4:2:2 max is not super inspiring, especially as I want to get into more sports/workout shooting and would love to be able to shoot higher fps)

    I'm coming into your review late, and I'm sure you eventually figured this out: but all of the numbered buttons can be reassigned.
    And even without reassigning, by default, the face button on the FX3 is another record button (6). It even says REC on it.
    And that's the easier button to hit with your left hand, while your right hand is holding the top handle instead of the REC on the top of the camera.
    For the rest, I mostly agree. I wish there was more mounting points for a monitor, the rear of the top handle isn't ideal to me. The LCD is far too small. Getting good exposure without waveforms is a fools errand. I personally would've also loved the FX3 more if it removed the IBIS in favor of internal ND's. Obviously I would love to have both, but in the event I have to choose, I'd rather have the FX6 solution of internal eND over IBIS.
    Genlock and Timecode as you say are also missing. I wish it also had SDI for its RAW output and monitors in general. HDMI just introduces lag due to the nature of the interface.
    I also wish the FX6 and FX3 had a locking mount. I probably would be willing to pay Sony $300 for that "upgrade" (as in, if I could send it to a service center and they would perform that upgrade, I'd pay that level of money for it). And it's frustrating that both Canon and Sony have intentionally withheld that important feature on cameras like the FX6 and C70 and now also the FX3.
    The FX3 also has terrible noise reduction that can't be turned off. But if you're careful and learn the camera you can avoid a lot of it. The FX6 handles this much better and also gives much better granular control.
    However, the image that comes out of this thing is insane. Best in class AF. Competent audio (which is huge in a camera like this). Long record times. Excellent codec. Great workflow in Slog3 in Resolve (post being an area that can make or break a lot of cameras).
    The A7S3, FX6, and FX3 share the same sensor and that is also a big advantage. As it allows different cameras to be used depending on the situation and still easily match them in post. It wouldn't be hard to use the FX3 as car cams as an example and the FX6 out in the open when there is more space.
    There's a lot to like in the FX3.

    Good stuff, man! Nice to see that Sony added the ability to timecode jam in their firmware update recently (via an additional cable), but what I wish it had is flat 24fps as well as shutter angle (and perhaps C4K)! Otherwise a solid little cam!

    Video Cinema Camera First? I’m thinking it’s video-centric, 10 bit 422 raw,, A7S3 with a few 1/4-20 holes and a grey paint job. More like a stripped down budget FX-6, and “Bob’s your uncle?” B-roll camera, C- Camera, or pickup shots, might be okay for vlogging?

    This is a tempting little monster. Gunna have to look at other reviews to get an idea on the stills in low light, but if this is comparable to the A7siii, I might go for this over that. I also like the idea of it being a vlogging camera and something very low profile for when I am in public and don't want to attract a load of attention with my fx9. But again, my next two purchases are putting a drone as priority and then a stills camera that is good in lowlight.

      It's not possible in the style of their mirrorless bodies, the only way blackmagic get away with it in a camera so small is because its not an electronic variable ND and their cameras are actually built around cinema ergonomics, Sony will never have that unless they redesigned the entire body. The only reason they made this camera is for more marketing.

    • @NicolasWaldvogel
      @NicolasWaldvogel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      unless you mostly shoot Doc and Videography work, skip this and get the PK6K. Much more filmic look and better skin tones. And built in NDs. And it's still cheaper lol. I feel some of these creators got paid to say what they said to promote Sony. Don't get me wrong, I like Sony a lot and shoot on the A7s and FS7 quite a bit. But this is just an A7siii repackaged a bit. Just changing the name to cinema camera and adding a top handle doesn't make it one. If you wanna get good at commercial/music video/narrative work, get a Pocket 6K or wait til you can afford the FX6. At least, that's what I'll be doing.

    Great review. Since I'm still waiting for the fx6 to ship (damn you pesky backorders!), I'll probably wait a year or so and pick this up used as a B-cam. I like the fact that Sony made a camera with a small form factor that you can use in normally awkward places. I'd feel more comfortable running with this camera than with a heavier fx6... that is, if they ever ship it to me! (Naw, I'm not bitter at all at the 2+ months I've waited. Not in the least bit.)

  • @BrittneyJanae
    @BrittneyJanae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The footage is only okay. Nothing wow about the camera. I also like bigger builds for cinema cameras because they help with the shakiness and adds a little weight to help. But if you don't have a cinema camera and this is an introduction maybe it's the way to go also if you don't have a sonya7siii. But to me I would say keep the sony a7siii and get a Sony FX6.

    An interesting camera, but Sony slightly missed the mark. Could've been a home run. [Maybe the FX3 II will nail it] Including IBIS over Internal ND (electronic) as all other "Cinema Line" cameras have was a mistake. This camera will often end up on gimbals where that ND would've been a big deal,, and Gimbal work is a big reason for FX9/FX6 owners to purchase one as a B cam. Additionally, the lack of viewfinder and the lack of SDI, with no option to add an EVF besides a monitor.. makes it a very questionable choice over the A7SIII.

  • @8lec_R

    Sony seems to have hit a fricking gold mine with this sensor. They've already shoved it into 3 cameras.
