Really a moving scene. Tobias Menzies and Jane Lapotaire nailed it! There should be a series made on the life of Princess Alice- what she went through and what she did made her an astounding figure!
One thing I think the Crown should be credited for is embracing the deep conversations about religion and how important it was to certain members in the royal family. For decades too many movies or tv shows glaze over these important conversations but they highlight the character and beliefs these people had that helps us connect to them. The unique position of the monarch of the UK is not just the head of state but also the church too, it's appreciating that the show didn't ignore that important fact and knew how to put it in the story without being condescending.
Yes, She was quite remarkable and steadfast with her Faith. It was a Joy to see that she is entombed in The Church of Mary Magdalene is an Eastern Orthodox Christian church located on the Mount of Olives, directly across the Kidron Valley from the Temple Mount and near the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. In my eyes, She is a Saint.
She wouldn’t have wanted the recognition. She was humble in her faith and works. Doing because it needed doing, not doing for praise. In the bible Jesus says “when you give alms, let not your right hand know what the left is doing”.
She received important recognition. She is one of the Righteous Among the Nations. They are non-Jews who put their freedom and often their lives on the line to help and protect Jews during the Holocaust.
Great scene. So moving. Phillip having to deal with hiding his own mother for years. A son coming to terms with the truth. Beautifully done and written. They are both wonderful actors. Such talent in The Crown. Doesn't get any better.
Seriously. One of my favorites is Pip Torrens as Tommy Lascelles, the Queen's Sicilian. There's seemingly no end of this level of talent among British actors. It's nuts.
I agree with everything you say about Prince Phillip, so why is everyone bullying Meghan and Harry, knowing the atrocious things the royal families did to their own families? Queen Elizabeth II put her brother's two daughters in a mental asylum and left them there to die until a Canadian reporter found them in 1963. They made it look as if they were dead.
I don’t think Princess Alice would have wanted any public recognition. She dedicated her soul to God willingly with grace and dignity and true love. Her love and service in God’s name was her life’s sustenance. Such strong faith is enviable. I wish I had it.
Agreed. She was never "hidden". She attended Elizabeth's coronation in her clerical attire and there are photos of Philip escourting her arm and arm with a big smile on his face. I like this show for it's characters. Obviously any historical drama is going to have some fiction to pull the scenes together but this one really goes off the rails in distorting the actual historical facts, especially since it was concerning so many people who were still living at the time.
She lived those last few years in Buckingham Palace. As I understand it she had a small apartment, she never made any “extra” demands on Elizabeth. RIP Alice.
I loved this scene. Whether or not it happened in real life, I hope Philip came to appreciate his remarkable mother and that he let her know before she died.
i have strong and nagging suspicion that late Prince Philip had smth to do with making The Crown. clandestinely, perhaps even anonymously, but it is so his style in some places. what are not public and officially guesswork by writers and fiction. but i think he fed them information and hints.
It should be a comfort Prince Philip was devoted to his mother in real life and never hid her away. When Prince Philip finally convinced her to come in London with him, the Queen gave her an entire wing of Buckingham Palace to herself to make her last two years as comfortable as possible.
I enjoyed the "Philip backstory" episodes almost more than the Elizabeth-based episodes. And yes I agree, Princess Alice deserves her own movie/series. She is considered a heroine in Israel.
This scene never happened. The episode is a love letter to Princess Alice. She did extraordinarily good deeds in her time. She served the poor, the sick, and the homeless. She devoted herself to God. She gave up royal jewels and other valuables to help others. During WWII she sheltered Jews and stood firm against the ousting of the Greek royals. She lost most of her children in her lifetime. Yet through it all, she kept going. She continued to serve up until her death.
