It's interesting that in this season of the Crown--if I'm remembering correctly--Princess Anne, Princess Margaret, and Camilla P-B all mention at one point or another how impossible it was to compete with Diana. Even more interesting, the only two older women who didn't seem to feel any jealousy at all were the Queen herself and PM Thatcher, maybe because each felt secure in her own sphere of power and influence.
That's basic female social dynamics. If you're on the same level as everyone else as a woman you're not supposed to outshine everyone else because you're percieved as a threat to everyone else. That was evolutionary selected by the way because when the whole tribe was killed and the women were taken and now in a strange new social group, the best thing they could do is present to each other as being nonthreatening. You can see this with female groups were they are friends with people who are about as attractive as they are, never with someone who is more attractive then them because that is a threat.

It may have nothing to do with the supposed competitors. The journalists need to make up conflict so that they have something to talk about. There's always one saint and one sinner, so that we have something to exercise our moral sensibilities on.
