I love amaryllis bulbs. My brother stumbled upon them for Christmas and gave me one 😮 Now I’m going to collect them. Also, before you plant it….soak the roots and it will bloom sooner 🌱🌸🌼🌺🥀💦
First time grower: Mine new bulb is the 2020 version, lol. I picked one up from my local farm/garden center. The kind in the box. I grabbed one I liked randomly at the checkout, and looked at the box last second. The lid was bulging so I peeked under it to see a bare bulb with an S shaped stem and 3 nearly ready to open blooms along with a 2.5” side shoot. I planted her up as soon as I got home and she is now in full bloom 💚
Just a tip for you novice Amaryllis growers....a $6.00 bulb from a box store (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target) is not as mature as a $15.00 bulb. The bigger the bulb, the more mature the bulb and will produce larger stems/flowers, sometimes two or even three flower stalks. Also, Amaryllis bulbs like to be a little tight in their pot like what Erin is doing here. One more thing...look for a book at your library called Amaryllis by Starr Ockenga. She collects them and is a photographer. Gorgeous book to look through for several varieties.
I’m not fussy about when they bloom, just that they do bloom in the dreary winter months is enough for me. You reminded me that I need to bring my amaryllis inside to get things started. Thanks Erin💚🙃
KEY WORD: EASY!!! I have a ton of those lovely things in a 1900's farm house we purchased 5 years ago. Never had Amaryllis before and I am a huge fan now. I didn't know about the top needing to be out of the soil, the ones growing when I bought my house were completely buried and they have come back every year and are putting out new plants and getting HUGE!!! These are truly forgiving plants. I absolutely LOVE them!!! I have 3 amazing white ones called Marquis that I think I will plant in a lovely pot and put in the kitchen window...big back porch makes the kitchen dark, the white blooms will help. Love what you do, Erin. Thanks a million...cheers and happy Thanksgiving!!! Hugs from Florida...❤️👍🏻🥰
Five years ago I got my mother in laws amaryllis when she moved from her house. She was gifted them from a neighbor when she was 12 years old - which would have been in 1941. They are lovely. When I found out how old they were I was a bit nervous to take care of them - but what a legacy.
I planted one for the first time this year in a much smaller blue and white bowl. I'm not hopeful I will get my beautiful white bloom in time for Hanukkah but you know first-timer, planning, and pandemic all that 2020 stuff I'm just glad I will have more than my stubbornly not blooming orchids to look at this winter. That amaryllis is a beast, I actually bought it as a kit in a box I took it out and it already started trying to sprout. It is growing so fast and has two stems coming up already. I love your big beautiful blue and white planter. I was looking at similar ones online and I just couldn't pull the trigger because they were so expensive but I found a small what I think is meant to be cereal bowl at home goods that my husband was kind enough to drill drain holes in to diy a Hanukkah coordinating planter.
My amaryllis have been in the ground for years here in Florida, and are a treat when they bloom around February or March. I have always wanted to force blooms for the holidays though. Good to know I should look for specific varieties 😀
I am Z8aNC. Was given 2 that had been in ground. When I planted them outside I raised them like she is doing. Is that correct or should I put them except tip in ground?
I love amaryllis and before my Mom passed away last year we grew them together in her room over the winter months. She had collected 15 bulbs and enjoyed watching how fast they grew. Planting them this year will be bittersweet because they gave her such joy. We grew Minerva, Alfresco, Hot Lips, Nymph (our favorite), Red Lion, Christmas Star and Amalfi to name a few. They will need a few more weeks in cold storage before I plant them up but will brighten my winter days! She also collected blue and white pots and I love the large pot you potted the trio into. That will be so beautiful in bloom! Hope you share when it does!
Thank you for the inspiration this morning!! I will be stopping by my local garden center this evening after work to get some amaryllis bulbs for an amazing Christmas display!
I’m so GLAD you posted this! I was afraid I was too late to try this for the first time. Have always been interested in doing this to give away for Christmas gifts. Thanks, Erin!
I was given 2 plants about 3 years ago and now I have all these babies. I had no idea they are so much fun. Now I am thinking I need to start a collection of different colors. I did add one of those wax bulbs so I guess 2 kinds make a collection. This is my first you tube to watch for 2021.
Enjoyed your video! I have over thirty amaryllis that I put out for the summer and bring back inside for the winter. Last year they all bloomed again for me. The show was spectacular! Of course I had to purchase some new bulbs too. 😀 I also force about 100 hyacinth bulbs too. So winter is never dull for me. Looking forward to your future videos!
Thanks for a fab vid😀 I am trying my hand with the amaryllis this year. I have one in a wax casing & the others I potted. Hoping for success. Will check in with you for more advice~plz keep it coming 😉be well & safe.
Gifts! Last year I took one as a hostess gift, and my friend said it was the best present ever! She texted me updates on her baby. I’ve got four new bulbs in my garage waiting to pot up tomorrow for presents, I’ve also got my last years bulbs resting in a paper bag in a lower cupboard to replant in a few weeks.
Hi. My first real time growing Amaryllises this Christmas. They were magnificent. Now I want to winter them over and you helped! Thanks much. Enjoy ALL your videos.
I have three amaryllis plants from last winter. I need to get them into dormancy. I'll probably plant them around Christmas so that they bloom in gloomy Feb. They were gorgeous last winter. I hope they'll bloom again for me. I enjoy your videos. I found you through Garden Answer. Your climate is closer to mine.
Love Amaryllis! I grow them every Christmas season for gifts and for my garden! I live in the south so after the Christmas season I plant them out and they will bloom in early summer, then I buy more! ♥️
@@tonichamber08 YES !! I'm in Milwaukee. Small world sometimes, isn't it ? I just bought Charisma last night. I love Amaryllis. It's what keeps me alive when I can't be in my garden outside.
I have amaryllis that are going on their third Christmas. I pulled them out and have them resting now. Thanks for showing us how to grow them in water, that’s one way I never tried.
I've planted 25 so far this year for myself and to give to others. I'll try the glass vase and glass technique with an order of bulbs that should arrive this week.
I had an amaryllis for 7 years that was grown in water. It bloomed every year for 6 years but quit blooming last year. i think i’ll try in glass this year, I usually buy them as cut flowers all through the holiday season. there are some peach and dark red varieties that i love.
I have an amaryllis that was gifted to me last Christmas, I grew it in glass with pebbles. Love the look of the roots through the glass vase. Thanks for the info, can't wait to see the updates on your blooming flowers.

I do like your video about Amaryllus bulbs saving for a next blooming. My experiance with Amaryllus bulbs is , you can force them to bloom at least twice a year. They can stand indoors in a window spot in full sunlight at shout-side, warm above a radiator. Watering when grow or blooming once the ground gets dry out. After blooming, I did cut the flower stem and let grow the leaves for severall months. The bulbs will grow back from beïng smaller after blooming. Next I stop watering till ground is dry out. Next I cut the leaves, the bulb stands there dry in pot on the same spot. So no cool period. After a while the bulb starts growing a new flower but. This might be in 4 till 6 weeks after the cutting. Next when the but opens and starts flowering, a litle watering after letting dry out the ground. So the cyclus starts over again. First time I’ve tried Amaryllis. Ordered from catalog. Planted three in one long pot. First one in middle opened just after Christmas (I planted late) other two are just about to open. Would like to keep and plant every year. So pretty!!!
I have red Amaryllis in my garden and a pink and white stripped variety, they multiply like crazy, huge bulbs some the size of soccer balls, they're still in full foliage now, and if it's stays mild will last even longer. I may pot up a variety of bulbs this year for the house. Thanks for the reminder!
I received my first amaryllis last Christmas and loved it so much I bought another in after Christmas clearance and had more blooms after Christmas! I just potted my bulbs up the day after Halloween and am anxious to see if I get blooms again this Christmas. I love trying new things. Thank you for your tutorial
I love Amaryllis and I'm slowly building my "collection". I don't force them to bloom for Christmas, since they are "outdoor plants" and hardy in my country, I just leave them outdoors and do their thing, but if I find a big red one, I might try this year. Can't wait to see yours though!! Have a wonderful day!! 😊
Erin, I had three of the biggest red and white amaryllis bulbs I planted last November. They bloomed for months. I finally took them outside for the summer and brought them in last month. They are sitting along my basement steps losing all their foliage. I am anxious to see if they rebloom for me this year when I bring them upstairs. Another thing everyone needs to know.... they can take a few weeks to show any signs of life when you first plant them, so be patient.
I have never grown them before it picked up two a couple weeks ago to give it a try - after watching this, I think I’m going to grab some more and just go all in with my attempt. 🤪
What exactly are you doing for this? I feel like I got a late start on it. I accidentally let them get soaked in a hard rain. I had them almost dried up. So I’ve imported them and trimmed the roots some. I be had them in a paper bag outdoors. I’m ready to go cool and dark. Hoping I can start them near around the end of January or February.
Mine are still potted and the leaves have almost finished dying back. When the leaves are fully dry I will cut them back and either leave thempotted in early dry soil in the dark or unpot them, knock off the soil and store them in early dry medium in a crate in the garage. I try to keep them at about 40-45 degrees for about 6 wks and then pull them out, repot them, water once and wait for a green bud to emerge. Most years 4 out of 5 bloom again in late winter.
I just got one of this plants and can't wait to see the flower! After that, I am planning to plant it and I hope it survives because I am terrible with plants.😃
I love (and I'm nervous about it too!) the glass and water idea! I have 3 hurricane glass vases that I usually fill with Christmas ornaments for the season. I'm thinking they'd be PERFECT for this idea. Great video - off to shop for some bulbs :)
THANK YOU! I have been growing amaryllis for years. I divide mine so many of mine are babies of others. Mine only bloom after January like now. I thought it was something I was doing wrong wintering them too late. Mine must all be Dutch bulbs!
Northlawn flower farm just posted an experiment where she soaked the roots for 12-24 hours before planting and the results were amazing. They shot up and bloomed weeks earlier.
This is my first time growing Amaryllis. I picked up one at my local Wegmans, bought one bulb from my local Walmart which started budding in our basement and picked up four more on clearance at our local nursery. So somehow I inadvertently have a delayed schedule for each of my Amaryllis which is very exciting. Two are in topsoil and one is in a rock display. Let’s see what the end will be. This is so exciting!
Thank you!! This video is exactly what I was looking for. I will be planting several tomorrow and using the heat matt because I am a about a week behind. I am happy to know I can use my orchid pot for this too. I don't particularly enjoy orchids (probably because I have only had "rescue" orchids) but now I have a beautiful pot that will work perfectly for the amaryllis. Thank you so much!
And now I need to go find some amaryllis bulbs to plant! Thank you for the tutorial! I tried planting one a few years ago but it didn't grow very well which was probably due to me covering the entire bulb with soil. Whoops. I learned something today! :-)
Hi, I'm Steffi from Gemany, Thyringia. Please take coffeefilter for your amarylispot and no substrat comes out of the holes. Coffeefilter from paper. Have a good time. Greatings from here.

Thanks for the info God bless you fantastic idea Im from south Africa bye
Mine are still planted in my garden. So I guess I should go ahead and dig them up.
Just got my first bulbs ever and am so excited to give it a try!
Love your pots! Nice video!
I have grown and most.times they do good but your knowledge is so helpful! Thanks
Northlawn flower farm just posted an experiment where she soaked the roots for 12-24 hours before planting and the results were amazing. They shot up and bloomed weeks earlier.
some of the ones I soaked the same way shot up and began to bloom then started to rot.. they held that water in I guess..
Awesome video as usual!
Thanks, Heather.
Very well explained💚
And now I need to go find some amaryllis bulbs to plant! Thank you for the tutorial! I tried planting one a few years ago but it didn't grow very well which was probably due to me covering the entire bulb with soil. Whoops. I learned something today! :-)
Hi, I'm Steffi from Gemany, Thyringia. Please take coffeefilter for your amarylispot and no substrat comes out of the holes. Coffeefilter from paper. Have a good time. Greatings from here.
