WOW! U said U cut part of the Amaryllis N put it at your bedside, show us how U curt it. I have the wax Amaryllises it bloomed 3 times, when it stoped I had it about a year just sitting. I thought it was no-more good, so I tossed it but that day I saw your video on putting it in water. I took it out of the trash put it in water N Man U should see how it’s growing I felt so bad that I was throwing it away😢 . Thank U so much.

I CAN'T GET OVER THE DIFFERENCE THIS MAKES! I'm so glad I watched your video. My poor amaryllis bulbs were neglected and in their dormant state in my cold plant closet for way too long due to ill health distracting me from taking my usual care of them so I was not expecting much. I soaked just the roots by putting them all in the laundry room sink in a few inches of water, enough for the roots but not so much that the bulbs were in water and kept a small counter top box heater slightly tilted and aimed at the sink to keep them warm. Soaked for 24 hours, potted up and they greened up and shot up so fast I was amazed. Day one I thought, how do those look so good after my neglect, day two they were so green and vibrant lookin, day three I thought are those really that tall? Day four and they are going like gangbusters. Absolutely amazing. ALL 22 have survived and are thriving, including the babies that wintered over for far too long attached to the mother plant which separated when I soaked the roots. I fed them today, day four and hope they continue to thrive. I really can't believe it. Thanks for this very useful video.

I can attest to the fact that soaking the bulb before planting does speed up the growth of the bulb. I tried it on the bulbs I planted for Christmas this year. I planted the bulbs around Thanksgiving. And most of my amaryllis bulbs started blooming just in time for Christmas ( 1 mo. after planting.) I soaked the bottom half of the bulbs in water for 8 hrs. before potting them to hydrate them. Don't get water in the top of the bulb where the stalk comes out. Then potted them. It jump started the growth for sure !

I would like more information about not treating a bulb to forced dormancy. In other words letting them be in soil 100% of the time and caring for them as a growing plant year round, like they would be on their native habitat. I'm curious about their natural growth/bloom cycle. And do they go dormant naturally in their native region?

Thanks, I'd like to also know how you handled that 4th, 3-week one? Or did I miss it? Was it also soaked? Why do some cut the leaves and roots before putting to rest? You don't, - don't you also not lessen the roots before the potting? How much and often does one water? Do they like it colder at night (i sleep with window ajar, even in winter, and the room can be 15 Degrees C. In the shops, the stand outdoors in pretty cold, around freezing-point temps.
How lovely and cosy it sounds about you and your grandmother! I wish I had one too.

I never let them soak more then a few hours tho.. I guess I'll be extending that time now. I also add a dash of fertilizer to the water during this process. thanks for sharing this..

I was born in the USSR, and people there had a lot of the plants that we grow now (even when my grandma was young and I wasn't born yet). So, I am familiar with a lot of them. What amazes me is that in many cases only now I learn the tips on the successful growing and especially getting certain plants to bloom. And only now I understand why my grandma and mom had failures with certain plants. It's mind-boggling how little knowledge people there had at that time about plants they had (and even farm animals, too).
And it's not just about the time, it's very related to the place, as your grandma seems to have had way more knowledge at relatively the same time.

Oh my god this is so awesome - I just bought 4 Amaryllis “Christmas gift“ from tractor and supply they had them marked down $7.99 to $3.99…. they looked really bad. So I thought well maybe if I just soak the roots. That might help they’ve been soaking for about two hours now (6:30ish EST). I was going to take them out of the water before I went to bed but seeing your video I’m so glad that I’m on the right track so I’ll leave them overnight - thank you so very much!
