Mine are planted in the garden and they bloom in the spring. But I did have one bloom this in July. Very unusual here in zone 7. I do plant them up to the almost top of the bulb. I have had these bulbs for over thirty years. If I move they come with me. I have moved over the years at least eight times. My dad gave me the start of them he lived at the time in Florida. My bulbs have been in Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina. Have done well in all of these locations.
What part of Texas? I'm in Houston and they were doing soo well until I realized my neighbor's sprinklers were watering them. Now they're rotten and I had 2 really big ones, multiple stalks and blooms in the Spring, but yes, I dig things up to move with me. My husband things it's funny.
@@waldemarcomas5149 i separated mine in the fall and I watered them down and praying i didn’t kill them i planted some in pot and the others back in the ground keep you fingers crossed 🤞 and praying for all i love ❤️ them
I fell in love with these when I packed bulbs for a major bulb producer decades ago. I sent them to my mom & sisters for years. My daughter was little at the time & though she's grown now, she STILL calls them "grandma-ryllis" 😆 I'm in N. Georgia & let mine be outside in their pots through the summer. This year, I let one stalk go to seed & now have tiny babies growing! They're just one little leaf, will probably take forever to reach bloom size but, what the heck, why not?? Brought mine in before it got too cold, I don't care when they bloom either, always welcome blooms whenever they appear!
Hi I have an amarilla bulb growing here on the costa blanca, spain. This year it had 17 flowers. Each year I get more and more flowers. It has been outside in the sandy soil for the past 5 years.
Thank you for the inspiration! I hesitated to try planting these this winter but after this video I want to lol amongst a thousand bulbs I want to still put into the ground ... first year of gardening and becoming a plant hoarder lol 😅
Laura, it was so sweet to see you doing your projects in bare feet and slippers. You're so down-to'earth and unpretentious. Thank you for always keeping it real. You inspire me to follow your example without making me feel bad about myself because I can't replicate the flair and scale of what you do. You brighten my life.
Surprisingly I found the exact amaryllis your planting a few days ago, and obviously picked up a couple. Turns out they must not look at their stock very often because I got 2 that had stalks at least 7 or 8 in tall! And they were all bent over in the box, one being almost 90degrees! I was so concerned I had to buy them and take them home. It's been 3 days and thankfully theh have pretty much fully straightened up. 1 of them actually has 2 bloom stalks and the other possibly was producing a second bulb (pointed downward, but already had a leaf, I generally separated and planted it next to mother considering I didnt think it would do well being planted under the soil) you can already see the reds of the bloom coming in. I talk to them, rub their leaves, and encourage them a couple times a day. I feel like it helps putting out the positive energy for them to grow strong and amazing.
Laura, you have mentioned that your bulbs bloomed in the summer. When they are planted outside they usually bloom in May-June. That is their bloom time in nature. If you want to grow them outside it is posible in colder climates. Next year you can plant your plants from pots in ground after the last hard frost, and treat them like every other plant. In autumn you need to wait frost to kill amaryllis leaves, and then you dig them up, cut the roots and store them somewhere where the temperature is 10C (50F). And then you just wait spring to plant bulbs in ground normal. Just plant them like every other bulb (the top of the bulb 4-5 inches deeper than ground level). And then same process in autumn with digging them up. Bulbs can tolerate temp down to -6C (20F), some varieties can tolerate temps down to -12C (10F). So you can plant them earlier in the spring when it is safe. They grow better when they are planted outside than in pots.
I live in South Africa and amaryllis bloom for us in spring and summer, which we have now, so I did find it strange that you are having them bloom in winter.
@@adrisutherland837 In Europe and North America growers and nurseries put plants in some kind of forced dormacy, and then the plants blooms indors around Christmas. It is just nice way of putting some colour indoor when we have cold outdoor.

I just love a amaryllis. I am fortunate enough to have all mine grow in my yard( in Louisiana) and every spring I have a magnificent show of flowers. Years ago I started with a few and now I have to many to count cause they just keep spreading. It’s never gotten so cold here that I’ve lost any! Here in Sydney (zone 11) I saw these bloom in spring, and some people keep the bulbs in the fridge till mid November and then they will bloom at Christmas which is the peak of our summer. So it has always been a "summer/festival" flower as I remembered....So it's quite amazing to see that they actually grow over Christmas over the world!!!!
Can't wait to see them bloom. I have an amaryllis outside that I replanted from my mother's yard after she died and it blooms in the spring. It's beautiful red and white striped blooms 😍
I have one. My husband gave it to me last December bloomed. It was so beautiful. I planted it and it has 6 large leaves. I live west coast Cali. I am going to put it in the garage and force it to bloom.
I find it helpful to know that even “seasoned gardeners” get off schedule and that things can still be done, even when you run late. I like that you give us what to expect, if we are later in doing things, because the plants may behave differently, if they are in a different stage of their life (kinda like people, when they are in different stages of life!)! Thanks so much!
You ma'am have inspired me so much this last year. I found amaryllis bulbs at lowes, so yes I purchased one. Yes just one. It was the Minerva variety. I have a young cat too. He is very demanding but good company and a lot of fun. I have set up some grow lights for wintering over my potted herbs but have to keep them in a back bedroom with the door closed away from the little ginger terror.
My daughter moved home & brought her 3 yo cat (I'm allergic to cats) Aside from my allergies, he's chewing on my succulents & I've caught him laying in my pothos plant!
Beautiful! This year I thought I was super late and planted 2 bulbs but I soaked the roots for 3 days (Didn’t mean to soak for so long but life got in the way) and then planted them just a day before thanksgiving and they were about 2 1/2 feet tall and bloomed just before Christmas! I was shocked how fast they grew!

This is my first year planting amaryllis and it's because of watching your video last year. I tried ordering from Color Blends but 2 weeks ago they were sold out! lol I'll try earlier next year. So I ordered from Gardner's Supply and on a whim picked up some paper whites and a pretty red (can't remember the name) from a big box store. I planted them all up in my terra cotta that was languishing in an old shed and now they are taking up my valuable counter top work space in my kitchen. Well worth it! Seriously Laura, because of watching your videos I've had house plants for a year now and they are all still alive! Lemon Cypress, pathos, Christmas cactus (love the leaves even without the blooms), aloe vera, an assortment of succulents, and even an ORCHID! Which is going super strong though I admit I have no idea what I'm doing right to make it grow so profusely and bloom so happily! I'm looking forward to expanding in to my yard this spring and trying my hand at bigger plants. lol Thanks for sharing your journey and giving so much encouragement through your videos, you're awesome.
I love it with the moss. I hope you put the pine cones in. I used gravel this time. Actually did everything wrong with them. They are resting now. Lol we’ll see if they grow.

Yeah been waiting for this all morning and after last years amaryllis, you inspired me to grow one this year. And....it’s starting to open and I can see the red of the flower, I’m so chuffed. I’m going to pay particular attention to how to look after them after they have finished blooming. Not too sure about the upside down amaryllis, it’s like the upside down Christmas trees.....nope not for me
I have one that is about 30 cm Diameter, it is a beautiful bright red. I have about 5 pups in the same pot, it is spring here. :) love my hippeastrum/amaryllis, she has almost a meter flower stalk.
Yes! I was hoping you were going to do a video like this. I’ve been reading that bloom time depends on whether the bulb came from South America (blooms at Christmas) or the Netherlands (blooms after Christmas). Would that apply only to new bulbs or also to the bulbs you are trying to force?
You are a sweetheart! I have three amaryllis bulbs on my basement steps waiting to come upstairs. I put them outside for a few weeks in the summer and brought them in early September. Excited to see what happens!
We live in zone 8 in North Carolina along the Atlantic coast. My mother planted more than 15 to 20 Amarylis in her walled garden. She had them bloom always in summer for over 10 years. She never fussed with them except to add mulch around them, water and once a year feeding. They always came up....absolutely beautiful.
I was searching how to force amaryllis bulbs and discovered your channel! Thank you for your valuable insight, super helpful and best instructions by far!
I’m an avid gardener living in Solano County Ca, my property is only 3400 square feet with front and backyard, although rewarding, takes hard work. I can only imagine how much work to manage a property as large as yours. The wonderful thing about plants, is they give so much back ❤
I just planted 3amaryllis yesterday cant wait for them to bloom!
Oh Wow! Such a beautiful container full of bulbs. Will be so pretty when they bloom.
One of the first videos of yours that I watched was on amaryllis care. This comes at the perfect time to remind me to get mine out of the basement!
I have fallen in love with Amaryllis! I tried to force some into dormancy; 1 is already budding! Thanks for bringing so much beauty to us!
So glad your being comfortable and taking it easy!
Thank you for doing this video, time to plant up this year’s amaryllis and get last year’s ready also.
Can’t wait to see these in bloom! FYI- I am a newbie gardener. I would love to have you do a video on how to grow potted plants into topiaries.
I just found out im pregnant (for the 3rd time) I'm so excited and THANK YOU for your videos. They pull me out of every funk im going through.
@Rachel...did you get your Aska pregnancy bracelet???
Thank you so much for this vid!! New subscriber, I found you randomly while researching how to remove weeds from the gravel driveway at our country home. 😂 I'm super excited about those hangers -- we live in a city in an apartment where space is at a premium and that means vertical decorations are so welcome!!
that is so amazing the amount you put in there. i can't wait to see the results. You must show an up-to-date video when it is in full bloom. wow.
And comfort is everything. glad you enjoyed your day
It is so...beautiful of the snow wax upside down, they are sooocute Amaryllis wax.
Perfect timing! I dug up my amaryllis that I had planted in my yard(zone 7b) and wanted to have them bloom inside this year.
Thanks! My wife received one of these for XMAS a month ago. Gave it a shot of water and placed it in the Sunroom. Wow, it is really growing now. Great video and very helpful!
Those amaryllises are in such gorgeous pots. I'm so bad at getting pots for my houseplants and have plastic green pots everywhere haha. You're looking so bright today, I hope you feel that way too. I'd love a basement tour- I wonder what plant goodies are down there. Such a lovely video- sending you love from UO.
Yay! I just binged all the amaryllis videos 💜 because I planted my very first one last week! Super excited to have my own living example to follow along! And my 6 year old is too - he'll be measuring the growth each week. 🌱 He'll be excited to watch this!
I found amaryllis do so well in my conservatory living in East of England so or winter is cold but has been very mild the last few years. I've let my be and they do flower in May so treat them has a spring bulb.
Thank you. I was gifted an amaryllis in wax and had no notion of hare to take care of it. Thank you for your video. Great.
Merry Christmas!

Absolutely love that you did this in slippers and love the shirt by the way!
Thanks for sharing these important tips. I do not have a green thumb as you do, but, watching you is encouraging. More power to you!
Inspired me to get mine planted today with our 50 degree temps in Minneapolis! Thanks for sharing
This was a wonderful video and very helpful! The only thing missing was that handsome assistant Russell. I guess he had something else to do today. By the way Laura you are doing a fantastic job, but we will be here for you when you need to cut back on your vids. Lots of love to you and your family! Hugs from NE Ohio. 🤗
Wonderful demonstration. Going to shop today for bulbs. I love the look of the pot with the moss. Thank you for sharing your beautiful ideas

Sherry Whitaker when I watched her video last year I put a reminder on my iPad calendar and on my kitchen calendar for early October. Helped a lot. ❤️
I purchased my very first amaryllis bulb last week while shopping at my local farm store. I'm anxious to see how it does for me. Thanks for this timely video, Laura!
Im so glad you made this video because I have my first ever amaryllus bulb and was wondering what to do with it once it’s finished 😍
Can’t wait for the blooms; they will look beautiful🌸🌸
About to plant my second one I have ever had. Gifted to me from my sister. Thanks for showing us the proper way to pot them!
That is going to be stunning. Can't wait to see it in full bloom. ❤️

New friend from India
I bet you get a nice long sturdy table in your new studio space! I felt so bad that you had to bend over so much lugging all those plants down stairs. 💕
How exciting to see this video as it's been a topic of conversation in the Groupies group and just got my Gardeners Supply catalog today and saw those hanging ones.. Can't wait to see everyone's grow..
In the late fall I cut back the green tops off of my amaryllis bulbs and put them in a paper bag and keep them in my crisper drawer for 6 weeks then replant them. I have a couple bulbs that I've gotten to bloom 3 or 4 years so far.
I've never grown Amaryllis, but after watching this I am going to do so 🌺
Could you tell me how long does it take from transplanting to soil to blooming?
Great content, a lot of inromation, Thank you 🍀
I am a new subscriber and I adore your enthusiasm and knowledge about gardening and everything related to it. I live in Canada and I will start experimenting with amaryllis for sure.
They will be Beautiful !! Glad you are taking things a little easier. Take care of yourself.
BTW - I’m loving your lemon cypress. I tried my hand at them here in zone 9. I didn’t have much luck. At this point, I’ve given up on them.
So pretty! Can’t wait to see the blooms. Does anyone else think it looks like a perfect fairy garden waiting to happen?😃
Oh hmmm I want to see more garden tours. I find your garden tours videos very relaxing and some relaxing and sometimes I just kept it playing in the background. Do you plan to make more garden tours this year?
I’m planting my amaryllis today! I’m a little behind as well but having never planted them before I’m excited to give it a try! The pot is going to be so beautiful when it blooms!
They're going to be gorgeous! I'm so glad they grow and winter over outdoors here. I don't own enough pots to bring all of mine in! lol
