I remember that when I saw La Vie en Rose I couldn't believe the excellent performance of Marion Cotillard and told everyone that she deserved the Oscar for best performance. Marion is in my humble opinion the BEST actress in cinema right now.
Earth - it's funny I walked out on that movie halfway because it was just too dark (and I like dark!) but I thought the directing was horrible like just dark dark dark dark dark/no contrast/no lightness for juxtaposition/no letting up at all so I left - but I remember thinking that was the best acting I've ever seen by her.
Sure, but I remember that Awards Season as if it was yesterday. Julie Christie won Globe, SAG, NBR and Critics Choice, she was the absolute front runner to win. I cried when Marion won the Oscar!
Because at the time Julie Christie was the frontrunner, but I think that was mainly due to her being a legend having a comeback performance. She swept the precursors. Ultimately, the right performance won and Julie was happy for her.
Best reaction to winning an award ever. Even though her performance towered over those of her fellow nominees, she did not expect to win, and if she hadn't, the BAFTAs would have no credibility. The audience reaction said it all.
Actually Baftas was the only award body among the major award shows to give her Best Actress prior to her Oscar win because Julie Christie was winning everything else so they did a really good job recognising her and pushing her forward chances to win. Of course she also received a Golden Globes for Comedy/Musical but that was a genre category and only Ellen Page was the Oscar Contender amongst the nominees
She gave one of the best performances of that decade in Two Days, One Night. It was so realistic. That nomination was a surprise one too. She was amazing in Rust and Bone too. One of the best actresses working.
She is so good that the movies that got her Oscar nominations are in French. I mean it’s not often the role of the nominees speak other languages but English. I got to know so many great French movies because of her.
and she's french ! everyone in France was crazy when she won the Oscar and all these awards. On t'aime Marion , tu mérites vraiment d'avoir gagner tous ses prix , ta prestation était remarquable !
For me this was one of the best performances I have ever seen by an actress. Up there with Jodie Foster for the silence of the lambs, Charlize Theron for Monster, Susan Sarandon for Dead Man Walking and Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby. It was an incredible year for nominees this year but they got it right with the winner.
Hilary Swank: right actress, wrong role. Swank's performance in 'Million Dollar Baby' was good; but not great. She was truly _great_ in 'Boys Don't Cry', for which she won her first Academy award (fully deserved). The actress who _should_ have won the Academy award the year Swank won her second (for the bafflingly overrated 'Million Dollar Baby') was Imelda Staunton, for her utterly compelling performance in 'Vera Drake'.
***** I see. I did misunderstand you, so I apologise for that. But as subjective as these things always are, I wouldn't have Natalie Portman so high on the list. She's a decent actress but I don't think her perfromance in 'Swan' tops Streep's in "The Iron Lady" or Theron's in 'Monster' .
@@VoxDeiUniversity Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice is a cliche answer. Marion as Edith Piaf was better than that. Charlize Theron in Monster was better than that. Liv Ullman in Face to Face was much better than that.
Marion Cotillard deserved the BAFTA and the Oscar so much as long as her performance was simply mesmerizing .... Elle a présénté le rôle de Mme Piaf avec une générosité absolue .... Bravo Marion en España todo el mundo celebró tus premios
it will be the only foreign language performance that is universally acclaimed by film critics , film historians and film audience who even are alien to the language and in this case with this performance it's righteous to say Marion Cotillard didn't win the BAFTA , BAFTA wins her
If anyone was alive in the days Edith Piaf was, - and alas we are getting fewer and fewer who remember her so tragic life. That performance was uncanny, - it could have been Edith it was so brilliantly and emotionally acted, - the joy, the pain, the sorrow, the heartbreak, and her tragic end were all their. Marion deserved to win every award going, - it is very hard to play the life of someone who is a 'National Icon' especially when people remember that person and can compare them to your performance.
This performance was definitely something, but I have to acknowledge that the scene from Elizabeth that they played was also so stunning! Oh Cate Blanchett! She just upped her game by cheering Marion on at the Oscars! Oh, these two women!
Graciassss❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Her performance in the film is simply astonishing. Probably the greatest real character portrayal Ive ever seen. Fortunately I am fluent in French so I can appreciate it fully, but for her to win the BAFTA, I guess the sheer power must come across equally well even with subtitles. Brilliant !
I thought they all gave outstanding performances. Julianne Moore should have won years ago so her Oscar win was a compensation prize. The Oscars like to play catch up when they overlook great actors like Julianne Moore
Marion Cotillard's performance was not acting n 'La Vie en Rose she was living the life of Edith Piaf. It shows her total commiment and dedication to the role that is surely lacking in a lot of moviess currently doing the rounds.
it's great that the movie industry still has some very talented actresses and actors. Marion Cotillard is a great example. one of the best actresses of her generation, in my opinion.
This was shocking at the time because Julie Christie was not only the frontrunner that year but Julie Christie is a BRITISH acting legend and the French actress won and deservingly so! Marion as Edith Piaf and Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos my favorite transformative actress performances.
Made me cry her winning that, so I was almost prepared for the Oscars. Look at the quality of her clip compared to the others and the cheers she got. Julie Christie was also great and the solid fave, but everyone knew that if Marion never got this Oscar then they'd never give it to any non-English language performance. Truly historical and ranks up there with Theron in Monster and Winslet in Et. Sunshine, probably the best female performance of the decade and one of the most deserving wins ever.
Is the movie available on yt or Netflix? I want to see it because I'm so convinced with all the praises and words of mouth by everyone for the film and Miss Cotillard. I also want to get to know Miss Piaf.
It's on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland. My mum and I watched it last night and really enjoyed it and I can safely say that Marion Cotillard deserved every award she go for it
Cotillard is an actress who (as a unique and gifted woman) pulls on the heart strings with her emotions, as well as having the gift of being a mesmerizing and divine image. For those who think Knightly or Paige or Christe should've won, please watch "La Vie En Rose" if you cannot cry or feel the sorrow and joy through her magnificent voice (Piaf's) and acting (Cotillard) of Edith Piaf's life then something is clearly wrong with you all.
This performance was so spot on and awe-inspiring. All award season critics kept saying Julie Christie, Julie Christie, Julie Christie. But I knew people would come to their senses, realize, and award what was truly the best performance.
I am very pleased that the BEST ACTRESS won the BAFTA well deserved for the most moving performance in a fim and she DESERVES AN OSCAR as well...well done!!! Academy for choosing THE BEST..
I AM SO HAPPY!!!! She is so incredibly deserving. And I love the fact that everyone cheered for her, that's so wonderful. Even Julie Christie, her primary competition, was genuinely ecstatic for her. So gracious was her speech, too. I love how sincere her shock and amazement was. That kind of earnesty is half the reason for her tremendous applause. Ahhhhhhhh, so excited at the possibilities now...^_^!
Sorry but Marion blew away the competition in that category, and that is saying something with the likes of Blanchett. I was mesmerized by Marion. Once in a while a foreign film actress/actor performance transcends English films and demands attention, this was one of those performances.
