I was an absolute mess watching this scene. She deserved the Oscar for this one scene alone. Her pathos was gut wrenching. You feel her pain as she cries, "Marcel! Marcel! MARCEL!!" and slowly watch her go out of her mind with grief. Every cell of her body morphed into Edith - damn girl, you nailed it.

@@r.r.r9746 The real Piaf wasn't vulgar. She had her issues but she still kept a respectable image.
Cotillard uses a very colloquial Parisian accent while Piaf spoke standard Parisian. Piaf was an alcoholic but she didn't made a spectacle of herself.

Black French that’s very interesting. Non-native French speakers would be unlikely to be differentiate between different registers in French,or be able to recognise their social significance. It is often people who, like piaf, have had precarious beginnings who set the most store by such things.

Let me tell you about this scene... remember when you were a kid and your hurt yourself really bad, like when you fell off the bike and your knee was bleeding? You may not have wailed but the tears were flowing really fast, you got choked up and your nose started running like crazy?
That is how I reacted in this scene when I saw this film in the theater with my mom. We both love Piaf's music. I was so embarrassed, crying like a baby in the theater and my mom was comforting me by putting her arm around me and letting me bawl.
I am around the same age as Marion Cotillard and I cannot believe that a person of her age gave such a performance. Not just the movement or the facial expressions, but she expressed such fragility and pain from deep inside which she so beautifully brought out on film. This is really one of the best performances I have ever seen.

I have always loved Edith Piaf for her unique voice but when I saw this film I also fell in love with Marion Cotillard because she could embody Edith's sadness, love and loneliness at the same time, sometimes she didn't need to speak only with her eyes and face expressions. I'm sure the scene when she's told Marcel is dead is one of the most difficult scene for any actor or actress cause she went to happiness and laughing to sadness and tears so fast, it's the scene that has made me cry the most. I'd like to think whenever Edith Piaf is she's happy for the homage to her memory this film represents and also with Marion Cotillard who was born to play this role, that's why she won every film contest she attended. But I think this film should also deserved the Oscar as the best film of the year!!!!!

This may seem sinical and cruel, but I don’t think that Marion Cotillard can ever improve on her performance as Edith Piaf. As many have said before, she didn’t act the role she lived it, she was Edith Piaf.

Brilliant movie! Edith Piaf's incredible voice captivated me as a little girl, much later learning of her life story explained the strength, courage and determination heard within that voice.'No Regrets' (minute 4.30) Thank you 'Little Sparrow'. Marion Cottillard a stunning performance.

After seeing this clip and reading online about Edith Piaf, I had to buy the DVD of this film.....OMG this is one of THE FINEST performances ever given on film. Marion later said on the Graham Norton show that it took her awhile to get out of that role because she put so much if herself into it...and it shows on film. Marion literally BECOMES Edith Piaf. She deserved that Oscar...now Hollywood needs to find more great films for Marion to star in

Joel, I know you hear this word used in just this manner every day, many times a day. But just so you know, in case you actually never learned the meaning of the word "literally", I am going to explain it to you. The word literally is a signifier for any words which one might otherwise imagine were "figurative". "It's raining cats and dogs" is a FIGURE of speech, which all people recognize as not being in fact, LITERAL. I actually heard a TV weatherman say on air several years ago that "In Los Angeles today it has been literally raining cats and dogs". If his choice of the word "literal" had been correct, it would have necessitated one finding layers of dead cats and dogs lying in the streets of LA, due to the very unusual "rainfall". SOMETIMES, though not at all frequently, it is possible to hear an expression which sounds like a very common "figure of speech", which, in a rather unusual coincidence is found to also be literally, the case, and not merely the figure of speech. Ex: "Damn, I'm literally starving to death!" if heard on the streets of America would never prompt one to imagine that the person has been deprived food for days at a time, never mind for a week, or more. It's a FIGURE OF SPEECH, which usage is described as speaking "figuratively" and used daily in order to be dramatic. But it is also very possible that an American departing his doctor's office could tell his friend picking him up that "Damn, I'm literally starving to death"! and not merely be suggesting they stop and have lunch when possible. His doctor has just informed him that he has an unusual malady whereby his body is no longer metabolizing his food, and his body tissue is decomposing...he is starving to death! At this "opportune" moment the "starving" man might cleverly say to his unsuspecting friend, "Damn, I'm literally starving to death" and be using the word appropriately. The word "literally" is not used unless signifying that someone, at this moment, is not merely speaking FIGURATIVELY, as in "FIGURE of speech".
      Popular figures of speech:
*"I'm starving", or even "I'm starving to death"! Only said "literally" in the poorest third world nations, today....or otherwise by persons with metabolic/digestive maladies needing a good looking into!
*"My heart is breaking" or anything concerning a "broken heart". "He literally broke her heart" is dramatic, but probably never truthfully said in history, unless there was something very diabolical, and "anatomically disruptive" involved. As perhaps, among the Aztecs, in some of their sacrificial rituals
*He's busting my balls"- Always recognized as figurative, rather than literal, unless it's a street fight involving kicking, and the groin area.
So....Marion Cotillard, though giving a truly magnificent performance, as good as ANY I have ever seen, could not possibly have LITERALLY, BECOME Edith Piaf who has been dead and buried since 1963. In fact, no actor in history has ever LITERALLY, BECOME another person, though that FIGURE OF SPEECH is heard applied to virtually every acting performance which is being touted each year to be among the award winners. In this improper use it merely magnifies one's expression to greater heights, while it totally mutilates the true meaning of the word. It is an improper use of the word, and used (as said earlier) by almost anyone now, to "que" the listener to prepare to hear something REALLY big. REALLY important, REALLY astonishing etc. Just for the speaker to appear more dramatic, and interesting a speaker! With popular use it has unfortunately come to mean NOTHING AT ALL! As in the case of the friend starving to death, it is a use which occurs properly, only very infrequently, and therefore, a little interestingly. It is a novelty, and therefore a little fun to hear occasionally. NOT EVERY DAY, AND IN EVERY OTHER SENTENCE as is the common improper case, today. So, now you should know what the word really means. Best of luck to you.

@@emmettwalz Thank for for the correction. Perhaps I should have omitted the word 'literally' and left the sentence just say 'Marion BECOMES Edith Piaf'

It is one scene with the whole movie and an entire life collaged... very powerful, but so is the scene where she performs her break through performance. It was a brilliant directorial decision, after all the drama of her preparation to have a sequence of her performance shot in silence with just a soft instrumental sound track. The exterior of life is always so noisy and dramatic, the deep interior observes in a silent calm.
