      ugh… At first I actually thought Julia Roberts was going to be humble for once… But nope. “I love it up here!… I love the world!” and yes, I’m bitter because it adds insult to injury that one of the best actresses of all time in one of the best performances of all time… Ellen Burstyn “Requiem for a dream… “Loses out to this Hollywood show pony with the big smile and poofy hair. 🙄…. This is kind of the exact moment that real acting was pushed aside for politics and greed… And it hasn’t changed to this day.

    Burstyn gave one of the most brilliantly and convincingly hysteric performances ever on film. And she probably deserved the win. I also loved Laura Linney's performance in You Can Count On Me. However, I can't begrudge Robert's win. It's a fantastic "movie star" performance built on charm, strength and screen presence, the type of performance we so rarely see nowadays. Blanchett is the only winner I would definitely put ahead of Roberts as far as winners in this category post 2000. And her performance would probably make my top ten Best Actress winners. So, while Ellen for me was more worthy, Roberts was hardly unworthy. There's some movies/performances that win that are truly unworthy. This wasn't one of them. Put aside whatever bias you have against Roberts and her work in other movies. Her performance in EB is great stuff and still holds up.

    Burstyn was amazing in Requiem, but I have a feeling that people prefer these type of performances - like an addict role - because they think it's harder to play these roles. And of course it's not easy to deliver such performance, but just imagine how difficult it can be to play a single mother of three, who has a big mouth, but other than that, there's nothing special, in the meaning of addiction, disability and such. Just a real, normal person. And that is a tough thing to do, to play that character so wonderfully that audiences will rememeber it, will actually notice it. And when you play a drug addict, that's already there, the audience already knows the most important thing about the character, so the actor actually has a head start IMO.

    • @JustinHenryfan
      @JustinHenryfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Exactly! In Burstyn's case 90 % of her acting is the role, 9 % is the director and like 1 % is her. Granted, that 1 % is flawless, but I would still give this Oscar to Julia Roberts any day over Ellen Burstyn, because Julia had to carry this movie on her own!

      Oh please! It isn't even a leading role! The acclaim Roberts received winning every award there is, comes to proof my point, she was so much better, so fiesty, powerful and strong and she made it look effortless. She owns that role. Ellen is carried by the film, which is great, but her performance is just a part of an ensemble, a great ensemble it is, but she doesn't achieve anything great in the role, since it's mostly the director doing the biggest effort on her case - whereas Julia does most of the work in the lead role of Erin Brockovich. Sorry, but I'm right.
