Her role as Edith Piaf was one of the most extraordinary performances I have seen in my entire life. It was like she was possessed by Piaf. I've never seen anything quite like it. Breathtaking, devastating, superb, mind-blowing...unforgettable. She's a rare breed of the consummate, method actor with genius talent.
btw, I was convinced until this day it was in fact her singing in the movie, even though rationally I knew she couldn't possibly sound exactly like Piaf, but her lip syncing was so convincing, it fooled my brain LOL
La_trolette True, French actors are the best when it comes to depicting life and love but suck at showing death, it's not a topic in French cinema unlike in the US where 60% of films have deaths and violence shown in it. Culturally, the French are worlds apart.
Except Marion has many times explained that she is NOT a METHOD actor at all. She rejects/avoids that approach. She doesn't want to use any formulaic process in her work. Each role she approaches on its own terms and finds a new process each time. She demands spontaneity and being in the moment from herself and no two takes are identical... she abhors cookie cut out moments and demands to the right to be fresh in each new take. That is how she works. She makes this clear in many interviews. This is why actors adore her and love working with her; she automatically challenges them to be as authentic as she is. They up their game to match hers and give excellent performances as a result. I agree with your conclusions about the quality of Marion's work but not about ascribing Method acting to her. Her method is to have NO repeated method.
That was really cool. I love hearing actors talk about the process for those big roles they do. And it's always fascinating to see what they retain from the characters even years later. It's such a personal relationship.
Marion: Let me tell you about how the role consumed me, and how difficult it was for me to get over the role. Graham: Can you go back to the role and lip sync like the character you just told me consumed your life? Marion: ...
Marion's english got really good. I remember when she struggled with it back when she became big. Impressive. And I can't believe she is 41. She looks great. I would guess she is 35 max.
Still better than be american, when you see the mentality, the lack of spirituality, the poverty of architecture, the president you choose democraticly, i totaly prefer to be an european or a french.
He does his research, he finds out things about them and guides them towards talking about it. They're talking about themselves and the audience receives them well, which makes them feel more at ease. He picks topics he thinks people will find interesting and funny and he fills in the gaps where necessary to keep it going. I would think he chooses particular people for his couch that he thinks will be a good match for providing entertaining interaction too. He makes it look all very effortless which is a testament to his command of his craft. It seems like just a group of people sitting down for a chat but I'd bet a lot of work goes into planning all of it.
+Contijn Buijs I read somewhere that about 16% of the world's population have attached earlobes. So we're in the minority, but there's still over a billion of us.
Contijn Buijs It's one of those recessive traits, I think. My mom has connected earlobes and my dad doesn't. Hers are just really pronounced because she has big earlobes, too.
WOW. That much talent, skill, and humility, in one person. Makes millions for the rich, using the connection, with us, just as they did thousands of years ago.
She definitely gave one of the most jaw dropping, heartbreaking, brilliant performance in La Vie en Rose! One of the top greatest performances from the 2000's, or probably one of the greatest performances ever!!
David Keenan apéritif? What? Why? XD apéritif means like happy hour, you know the thing you do with friends where you drink cocktail and have something to eat, I'm not really sure it's called happy hour in English but I hope I made myself clear enough :)
She has such exquisite talent! And hearing what she said at 0:56, I'm not at all surprised. I've felt echoes from her acting days after seeing her. So extremely few actresses can bring such soulful and affecting dimension to their roles... BRAVO MARION!!
This movie changed my life, don't ask why...its complicated but I have some lyrics from that song tattooed on my thigh. I read them everyday and everyday I am greatful.
The title of this clip is the least interesting thing about it. I understand it's clickbait and all, but wow - Marion Cotillard's devotion to her craft as an actress and her talent and her wisdom when speaking about how the role and herself melted together, is so much more interesting than the lip-syncing. Learning about any artist's process is always so interesting and her calm and wise demeanor is so captivating. Love her energy.
No but it really is incredible though?? To poistion not just mouth and face, but tongue and throat in the right without actually singing, and to know exactly how the original singer must've done it to produce the sound she did... That really is stunning. The preparation and insight Marion brought to the role are unsurpassed and definately show in the results.
I loved her as Billie in Public Enemies and continue to be fascinated by her. She and Depp need to do more films together...maybe The Thin Man series...
I gotta watch that movie (again). I saw it as a child and didn't like it because I couldn't follow the complex non linear editing but now I'm grown up and I think I can handle that.
She totally deserved that Oscar. One of the few times the academy got it right!
Boy In The Box agree
Yep
They atleast got it wrong one time: Brie Fartson
@@csgoark2521 Mocking people's names is an excellent way to make your point. Very articulate.
@@csgoark2521actually it's Brie Larchild😂😂😂

Piaf stopped possessing her during her death scene in Batman then...
Animationexclusive agreed. It was pretty bad

Lol so no one is going to talk about that voice that came out of James McAvoy at 2:52... "WALLIES!"
Going through the comments just to find a mention of it! Haha! And he looks so proud of it!
aahahahhaaaaaa me too
Icon
In a masculine American voice 😂
I have no idea how he did that lol Im crying
No matter how much I watch Le Vie en Rose, her performance playing Edith Piaf always mesmerizes me. It's so strange and magical and wonderful.
She gave a riveting performance of Edith! A most brilliant film of this genre. Love it.

So not delicate
Just my thought.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I don't think he was expecting her to go that deep lol.
Yup, I thought the same. Fairly insensitive.
I love how quiet they are listening to her.... THE COTTILARD EFFECT. LOL

Can't believe she's 41. I was expecting maybe early 30s.
kcthewanderer Well she's been in her 30s for a long time now. She was bound to grow out of it.
Crystal U lol Yeah, time cured me of my 30s as well. My case just had more lasting effects than hers, methinks.
kcthewanderer she looks like late 40s to me
Joice Ann, You sound early 10s to me.

She is magnificent!! Breathtakingly talented!!
Nova Lena How is the movie about Edith Piaf's life??
Marion - the film was excellent, you were excellent, Piaf was extraordinary.
yay
One of the best actresses alive!
She was amazing in "La Vie en Rose" and in every other movie I've seen her :)
THE DARK KNIGHT
YEAH HER DEATH IN BATMAN IS AMAZING
That's not just on her. The director felt like it was okay and like there was no need to take another shot haha.
Fantastic movie!
Edith Piaf, Inception,Allied-her best movies ❤❤
4:03 damn she nailed the pause.
Pfft a real method actor would have learned to actually sing those lines.
hahaha, nice. you must either be trolling or very dissatisfied about your life.
***** You just have low standards.
With original music, sure. But this was Édith Piaf, even if she had learnt to sing, it would've never sounded how it was supposed to.
haitianxu You have issues
One of the most deserved Oscars I've seen.
James McAvoy is so hot, and I think he's underrated, he's the UK Leo Dicaprio.
Zack Kadd scottish
saskewoo Scotland is still in the UK
totally agreed
Its 2019 , and you still haven't corrected it …
Sorry, Leo is much hotter and a better actor.
2:07 Love the way she holds his hand there in response to his compliment. She's so sweet.
Gosh... She is a such a real woman. Those eyes, face, lips... Her voice. Her way of talking. I just love everything about her.
Marion Cotillard is pure talent! :)
She is french :)

Inception comes full circle 6 1/2 years later.

chris correa Yep! Came out in the summer of 2010.
Wow, she was really good. The passion in her eyes.
She's better at lip syncing than Mariah Carey...
Anna Laurent Mariah could sing
thehoneyeffect Marion can act.
Anna Laurent Who isn't?
😂😫💀
Mariah could sing, like 30 years ago. lol
Don't know why I like this guy or his show, but I do! And he gets the creme de la creme of the top stars.

Marion's performance in La Vie en Rose was everything. For me, it was the best performance I have ever seen by an actor on screen. Just phenomenal.
i want someone to look at me like M Fassbender looks at Marion!
Both Fassbender and McAvoy seemed to admire her there.
Marion Cotillard, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy... 3 of the best and most talented actors working today!

Pregnant=ugly????????? I’m confused
Types of comments that look like compliments but actually just are another boring assessment on appearance fitting people into stereotypes
Does that mean she and Natalie Portman would be less attractive when not pregnant 🤨 so confused!
I like how there's no problem translating dentures between french and English, but the Scottish isn't comprehensible.
"Can i have a vodka" lmao
OMG I love this woman, she was so goooooood in that movie I really believed it was her singing!
amazing actress! damn those american chicks can never get as real as these french and english actresses

Marion Cotillard is the most favorite actress of Christopher Nolan. They both are best.
Did anyone ever see Marion in her first movie (taxi) ?? What an amazing career and she has come so far....well done.:)
