    I kept my GRII when I added the GRIIIx and later the GRIII. The GRII is essentially identical to the GR plus the WiFi module as I understand. I cannot reproduce the randomness of shooting a scene with consistent light - I get consistent results from mine. I feel that some cameras tend to get the photographic myth treatment. Like Leica cameras sprinkling Leica magic fairy dust over the images (don't worry, don't get agitated, I love Leica, I own three different Leica M bodies), or in this case: it's inconsistent like a film camera. Nope, not the case. The inconsistency is from the environment, not the camera. If you dial in manual settings and shoot the same scene over an over again, you'll get the same results.

      That's true about using manual mode! I usually use p mode and use exposure comp and exposure lock to help out. Maybe I'll tap on that in a different video. Thanks for the comment!

    hey chris!
    i have a little old digital camera too, i love the simplicity of it. As you said it is far from good and thats the part that makes it so atttractive for me to use it.
    And I appreciate the vulnerability from you. What you say, about staying in the moment while taking pictures, not giving to much weight on the taking part was beautiful. Your videos always spark the love for the medium in me and especially show me that there are humans outside there, that think like me and live like me and try and that calms me.
    thank you for uploading again, i missed you
    Love, Jakob

    I have the original and the iii and both are amazing. Especially for casual shooting.
    The main differences are Mpx count, ibis, and wifi. Other than that the original has a better positive film to my taste (more portra 400 like in terms of warm tones)
    The original have a flash and it’s always good to have.
    Thanks for the video

      Thanks! Yea I do like the color of this one and the flash. The digital noise is nice too, but compared to the GR3 the sharpness and detail of the higher mp GRs are hard to beat

    just bought this and it has more so frustrated me. when you set the camera to produce RAW files, they come out as DNG files on the computer for some reason. the interface is really laggy when switching between shutter and aperture. the battery life is terrible on this camera. i will probably have to buy two new batteries for it smh. had it on my charger all night and when i woke up, the camera didn't charge at all for some reason? manual focus is a pain in the ass to use on this camera. i bought my camera in excellent condition so im not sure why some of these things are happening. not a great experience with this camera so far personally...

    • @ZoneFocused
      @ZoneFocused  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Man sorry to hear you've been having a bad experience with it. I can't speak on the RAW files because I exclusively shoot JPEG with the camera. I have heard that shooting RAW or RAW+Jpeg will slow the camera but I'm not sure because I've never shot it that way. Haven't tried to manual focus it either. The autofocus and snap modes have been all I need. Maybe new batteries could help or an external charger for the batteries. Shooting only JPEG my batteries last for a really long time. I also don't chimp through the day so maybe that keeps it going too. Hope it gets better for you!

    Hi Chris, a real surprise to find your video! I loved your photos :). Like you, I am a happy user of the original GR. In parallel, I also have the X100T and V but the combination of the old sensor + very sharp lens gives a unique look to the Ricoh photos, especially the jpeg ones. Lately I've been using the GR as my main camera and experimenting with different camera settings however there is one in particular that I still can't quite decide on and that is dynamic range compensation. What value between off, weak, medium and strong do you use for your photos? A big hug from the south of the world!

    Some of my friends use some verision of the GR digital camera and the love it for its size and image quality!
    I would personally go the the 40mm lens compared to the 28mm lens if I would get one today.

    • @ZoneFocused
      @ZoneFocused  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the original GRd too but it was a little too slow for me and the battery life was so short, so i ended up going with the first APSC

    Nice to see you again Chris, long time no see. Thanks for the nice video, kinda refreshing and similar to a phase I had years ago when film started to become a thing and somehow it wasn't cool to go digital. For fun and a form of challenge, I saved up and bought a digital full frame I always wanted and enjoyed it. In the end, I sold it to finance a dream lens and always missed it. The convenience, quality, efficiency and ability to travel without bothering with customs was invaluable but I thought I would still rather enjoy it with film as it was more of an artistic hobby than clean photography anyway. Fast forward couple years and I find myself, sometimes, just wishing I could have that option again.. super fast iso, semi-auto exposure settings and not needing to constantly spend time or money on development.
    I guess I learnt that we should never do absolutions and be opened to new experiences, just embrace the discomfort even.

    • @ZoneFocused
      @ZoneFocused  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point. We can't cut ourselves off to different ways of making photos. At times I wish I had that x100f still just for a small camera, especially with film prices changing for color film but yea I agree!

      @lueniopue2488 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get one. This is an amazing camera. Especially if you shoot street or family moment. I have the original and the iii, and I prefer the positive film jpeg from the original weirdly.
      Both are amazing. Even the original will give you amazing photos with its 16 Mpx (the lens is sharp sometime over sharp lol)
      If you can spot one at a good price. Get that one to wait for the Gr IV

    • @ZoneFocused
      @ZoneFocused  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with what was already said. If you can find a cheap older model grab it and use it till the 4 comes along. But one thing about Ricoh is they are not like other brands and release new cameras yearly or bu-yearly

  • @artor1309
    @artor1309 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    finally someone that uses jpeg and lets me see the results. It does indeed look like film even without editing. Did you use a preset or recipe too? or can it be done?

    • @ZoneFocused
      @ZoneFocused  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All I do is put it in high-contrast mode. The higher the iso the more the noise will show which gives it a cool look "pushed film" look IMO. There aren't any special tricks to it really. For color, I think some people have made recipes for it but I don't shoot color much. Its just a fun camera. Thanks for the comment, and JPEG all the way on this camera!

  • @tomfenn7149

    Ricoh only implemented the snap focus function because autofocus on these cameras was at the time fairly unreliable. But other small sensor manufacturers such as Panasonic and Olympus already had this feature, known as 'back button focus'. That said, I love my GR, and will often favour taking it out over my others, because it's so small. The GR (mine is the even older GRD IV) reminds me of my old Olympus XA film camera, which was always in one of my pockets. A smartphone will never replace a camera.

    • @ZoneFocused
      @ZoneFocused  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea the GR is my favorite pocket camera for sure. I didn't know snap and back button focus were the same. I thought back button focus was just that, push the back button to focus on the AF point, then you can hold it and take photos. The snap on the other hand didn't rely on the af point and didn't need a second button to press to focus and photograph. Slight difference in process but I can see the similarities

    • @tomfenn7149
      @tomfenn7149 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ZoneFocused It can be that. But it can also be 'press and leave'. So if you point the camera at an object 1m away, or 1.5m or whatever, if you have 'reset lens' turned off in the menu, whenever you turn the camera off and on, that distance is remembered.

    The fact that these older cameras can still surprise us with the way they aren’t always the same, clinical shot over and over are a lot of what makes them awesome, in my opinion. Wouldn’t mind having one of these for myself! 🤙🏼

      @@ZoneFocused my camera's starting to make noise from the lens' gears, and Ricoh stopped taking orders for repair. I know this is a far stretch, but do you happen to know any repair shops that could service this thing out of warranty?

    • @ZoneFocused

      Usually a brown circle with green block letter USDA over a smaller white font on a green background that says Organic. Wherever that sign is, organicness will surely be found. Get out there and see if you can find it 👍! Thanks!
