This is basically how I do it too. Also, I have a mini tripod that extends the neck up with a collapsing design. It lets me capture those still scenes I like, with a couple seconds of exposure. Plus, I can close down the aperture and zone focus. One of my favourite things to do is take the long exposures in the city right as the sun has disappeared. The sky looks black to our eyes, but the camera captures some great dramatic hidden colours, plus you get the light streaks from traffic, and busy places look empty etc.
Thanks for commenting, sounds nice. I never really considered using a tripod with my GR as I consider it to be my pocket/handheld camera but I should give it a try!
Great results for the GR at night. You definitely pushed it's limits, it took me a long time to find these and was always fighting with it. You are right about changing the approach at night. The vibe of the night exploration in the video comes across really well. It's understated how good the IBIS is at those lower shutter speeds.

Really liked your video! I usually can safely shoot down to 1/5th of a second even on the GR3X, which is just great. ISOs are safe up to 5000 in my opinion, at 6400 there is a noticeable dip in quality. This kind of image quality in your front jeans pocket even at night is basically unheard of til the GR3 came around. I just love it!
Thanks for commenting! Indeed, we could argue that is some situation smartphones can take good photos at daytime but at night they just cannot compete with cameras like the GRs :)
Did you try turning off NR at higher ISOs? It may be making it soft to account for noise automatically. I turn off all NR in camera as you can often manage it better in post. Grain is often quite nice anyway.

It is probably not the best. You can do some night photography with it but at a much slower pace. Maybe something with a wider aperture or a flash is more suited for your needs

Just picked up a gr iii myself and this videos is really going to come in handy. I don't know if I missed it but did you have a recommendation for metering when shooting at night?
A great mix of video, stills, artful insight and technical tips. Very helpful and inspiring. Thanks for the comment and suggestion. I get all my music on Epidemic sound and look for a vibe I want to create. The artists are different from video to video and even within one video I use music from different creators
Good video and some nice images - thanks. When you are shooting in low light, suggest you use “Snap Focus” (I have different distances programmed into my U1/U2/U3 settings) then it will “focus” FASTER than a Sony! :- ) Snap Focus is one of the best features (IM0) of the GR - Peter.
Good suggestion, there might a way to change the snap distance with the upper dial or back wheel that could make switching even faster. I will try this soon :)
@@adriensanguinetti you need to enable snap distance priority mode, the top dial changes focus distance (1/1.5/2/2.5/3.5/5/infinity) and the back dial changes the DOF 1/2/3 with 3 being hyperfocal (be aware when focusing closer that DOF3 will push the aperture to something like F11/F16 and it will be unusable for night photos)
I only recently discovered your channel and have watched a few of your videos including this one and the daytime street photo one. There videos are extremely well done and very helpful.
