    Love this story - certainly wasn’t a click bait style title.
    You’ve helped me make my decision - think I’ll be getting the GR.
    So true about carrying the gear and annoyingly not even using it or taking pictures you don’t like just because you brought the gear with you.

      Appreciate it! Yeah I never feel bad about bringing a GR. For personal stuff sometimes you just don’t feel like bruising the moment by pulling a camera out. But this one makes it so unobtrusive that it’s not a big deal if you decide to do so.

    Regardless this video didnt advertise to be one, it was the best comparsion + review + "before-you-buy" video i've seen - and yet it was also made with such a style what alone rises my praise. We need more this kind of "story like" videos about things, especially when the things are like these cameras; not only a tech pieces but ways to roll on wherever we go. I dont have yet one like this but im waiting for the Ricoh GR IV and hoping it would have the "x" option already from the launch - and if not, i might do like you and get first the normal one and eventually bring two cameras with me. Thanks for the video!

    Thinking of getting either a gr iii or gr iiix for social events and street photos which one would u recommend?

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  ปีที่แล้ว

      What experience do you have with either focal length? If you have tried a 28mm and prefer it over a 35 or 40mm, get the regular iii. If you haven’t tried a 28mm or prefer 35 or 40mm then get the IIIx. That would be my personal advice. More generally I think more people would like the IIIx if I had to blindly recommend

  • @PaulTakesPhotos

    I love my GRiii-x also bought it second hand and I agree it takes away a lot of barriers whilst producing great Image quality. The GR line is a bit underrated in my opinion. I have a Sony A7III, Fujifilm XT30mii and a Leica. But the GR is my everyday camera and I use the DJI Pocket 2 as my everyday video camera although my Google 6A is proving stiff competition :)

    • @Lonnie.G

    Thanks, I really like the story telling approach you took for this video, makes it different from the crowd, and its about you and the camera. I am a GRiii user with other M4/3 kit and like you, I find even with the fairly compact M43 kit, if I am not going somewhere just to take pictures the GR is a much better option as it can easily be put in a belt pouch. Currently contemplating getting the x as well so really helpful video for me. Peace

    Cool video! Man, you have ton of gear to choose from. Had a similar situation, where I took my Sony A7rIV and 24-70 f2.8 and my GR III. After the second day, only started carrying the GR III and realized the value of something small, discreet, light yet still photographically very good. So picked up a GR IIIx when I got home. The lens on that camera is amazing. So I now I have a travel kit similar to yours that I agree allows you to enjoy time with family and still make images when I come across them.

    Loved this video, thank you for sharing. For times when I feel I'd like to have a viewfinder with the GR, I put the GV-1 hotshoe finder on and set the back screen to black to avoid the temptation to use it Adds a bit of course to bulk, but it can be easily popped on and off as needed. Not sure if they make one for the 40mm view though. Your grey 3x is beautiful.

    I had exactly the same experience as you! I have a Nikon F2A, so for film, an Olympus mju ii (also film) and a Polaroid SX70... These cameras are sleeping in the closet and come out very rarely if not almost never! Then, I have one of Fuji's (X-Pro and X-T4) and many, many lenses! I finally got tired of carrying all this equipment! Nowadays my Fuji's are mainly used for video or specific shoots! I bought a Ricoh GR III Street Edition and fell in love with it! So much so, that I added a GR IIIx to it (the normal black version), so, just the opposite of you! Nowadays, especially since I do a lot of street photography, 90% of my photographic production is done with my little GR's and I'm more than happy with it! The quality of the files is really fantastic... Thank you for your sharing which could have been mine, so much your story is like mine!

    I just got my GR III yesterday because as much as I have tried to let it be good enough, phone photography just doesn't cut it for me especially when the lights start to dim. While I have gotten much more comfortable carrying my X-T4 around more and more, it's still significant in size, and sometimes I feel weird just being that guy pulling out the big camera in the middle of a restaurant, bar, etc, so I often leave it at home. Every time I go out though, I end up finding things I want to photograph and just get let down by my iPhone.
    I'm hoping this fills that space. I just want a good camera I can carry with me the 75% of the time that I'm not carrying around my X-T4. On my upcoming vacation to Europe, I'm planning to use the X-T4 with the 10-24 as my primary daytime lens with the 50-230 as a backup, my wife can use the Ricoh, and at night when we want to go out to dinners, bars, etc, the Ricoh will be the choice, which means I don't have to bring an extra sling or camera backpack. Sure it's not a 1.4 lens like my Fuji lens, but this entire camera weighs less and takes up less space then the lens alone. I'd rather have a slightly noisy image then no image at all, or a super mushy iPhone night image.
    Awesome video, good story telling!

    just my opinion, but with those 2 focal lenghts being so close together all you have to do realistically is step back 1 to 1.5 metres for more or less the same picture, am I right or am I right?

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m a way. Distortion and rendering would still differ slightly but wouldn’t be noticed if not side by side. It’s more about what your used to shooting and Maria rally visualize with. I’m quicker framing up a 35 or 40 than a 28 personally. It makes me approach images differently when I’ve locked in the focal length in my head. Your mileage may vary though

    • @Lonnie.G
      @Lonnie.G  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe! I definitely prefer the IIIx to the III. If you like the size and usability of the camera body itself, but find yourself struggling with the wide mess of the 28mm FOV, then yeah you might want to. Especially if you like something between 25-50mm. If you don’t like the shooting experience with back LCD or handling then the IIIx will still be a problem for you. Good luck!

Every now and then I am actually happiest with the jpeg and I use that though. Ricoh jpeg processing is really close to Fuji. Easier to use but slightly less options. But really good. I’m happy with either of them to be honest. Though I will say classic chrome might be my fav, then either Ricoh positive or negative film. The both have awesome black and white sims. Your video just popped up on my YT feed. This resonated so much for me, I don't know how may times I hauled a bigger camera and just because I brought it I felt I had to use it. I've been a long time fuji user owning most major body styles except the H series. I sold my x100f years back to get the lighter x-E4+27mm pancake. I was thinking swappable lenses and lighter, but other lenses besides the 27mm felt bulky on the E. Sold that for an x-t30, thinking well I used a grip all the time for the x-e4 get a camera with built in grip, it was a great camera but far from pocketable and I ended up leaving it at home a lot. I just got the GRiii and what a game changer, I'm still getting use to life without an EVG but for daily life and family it's becoming a favorite. The GRiii comes on every adventure now no question. Really great video essay. I love your storytelling style.
    I shot with an RX1 since 2012. Ran with both the RX1 and a GRIII last year and found that I shot more, and more often with the GR since it's so accessible. Was really surprised by how the controls are so well designed to be able to manipulate the exposure triangle so quickly with one hand.
    Sold my RX1r2 with plans to just run with the GRIII and GRIIIx. All things considered, that setup would probably be perfect, but picked up an XT5+XF27mm as my "2nd cam" to the GR for IBIS and 40mp, since I do crop extensively at times as part of my photography workflow. The "just in case" bug got me. ;)

    Hi Lonnie,
    I've just discovered your videos, and I love them !
    It's a great mix of an interesting story, stuff review, and photo samples. Really good job !
    I had the same dilemna a few times ago.
    At first, I had a Fuji XT3 with some good lenses (23 f1.4 most of the times, 56 f1.2 and 27 f2.8), but I was not taking it for short walks with wife and daughter, or for restaurant or activities : even with the 27mm 2.8, is was way too big.
    I ended up selling all this stuff, and bought a Fuji X100V (before the price goes crazy) : beautifull camera, great lens, Fuji films simulations (love them !) ... but still too big and heavy to forget it when you have it on you !
    And then, the GRIIIX came out.
    My last experience with Ricoh was with the GR2, that I didn't keep because I was not ready yet 8 years ago or so.
    After 2 weeks of test with the GRIIIX, the choice was obvious : the Fuji X100V can't stand against the Ricoh GRIII / X when you are looking for an EDC camera.
    The Fuji X100V was sold in 2 days (If I had knew that the price was going as crazy as now, I should have kept it :D).
    And then, I even found a used GRIII with a dust on the sensor, for a great price.
    Now that I have both GRIII and GRIIIX, I have noticed that I'im using GRIII more often than the GRIIIX.
    Perhaps the next step is to keep only the GRIII, and try the GT-2 lense when I really want to shoot some portrait.
    Sorry for my english by the way ;)

      I forgot to talk about your bag review : I just love it !
      But damn, it seems impossible to find it, even a used one :(
      Funny point : I need to carry almost same stuff as you :D (GRIII, flash, Steam Deck, small PD pouch)
