    This is one of the best videos about a camera I've ever seen on TH-cam, such a great storytelling.
    I've had the GR II for a while and I have to admit that the lens was the sharpest I've ever used, I regret selling it. Now I use a Fujifilm X-Pro2 which is great btw

    Just got myself a GRDiii cheap on ebay a couple of days ago knowing nothing about them. Just wanted something compact to fit in my pocket to get back into shooting daily again and stop using my iphone and heavy dslr. So far im loving the b/w look of this little beast. So much character for such a little old thing. also near impossible to find any info on and nice to come across this.

    Just bought this 2005 camera, 8.1mp in 2023! I love it. Its sharp without sharpening in body to max, produces lovely grain and as it's producing good images worth the 240 pounds I spent on it.

    Fantastic video on a legendary camera! Really great insight and hit on all of the reasons why I’ve fallen in love with the GRD series of cameras!
    I was a canon s90 owner and still have it. Was tired of shooting my apsc cameras with high res and sterile images. I have the GRD4 and would hands down sell every camera I have to keep this one because of the filmic feel.
    I fell in love with photography by learning on film, shooting 70 weddings back in the day and this camera instantly brought that back for me!

    There's something special about early-development digital cameras. I shot with the Canon 5D Mk. I for well past it's "best before" date and some of the colours that came out of that are difficult to attain, even in post.

    I have this camera and have expanded its capabilities by adding the 21mm converter, 40mm converter and the add on viewfinder. 37mm filters can be used using the required extension part with the 28mm camera lens. Also updated to latest firmware which among other improvements allows a b&w, colour and sepia image to be saved at the same time.
    Another point worth a mention is the camera accepts AAA batteries as well as the usual rechargeable lithium ion type.
    I know this adds a lot of bulk to the camera form but are optional and only used as required.
    Have a number of other digital cameras but the Ricoh is definitely a keeper.
    Thanks for the video upload. Very few covering this model.

This camera is so small that I don’t need any camera bag. I can just put it in my pocket! I bought other camera a year ago (sony A7C, which I mostly use for the product photography) and the zoom lens that are pretty heavy, so It was always my excuse not to take it outside. With Ricoh camera I have more motivation to start taking street photography or just go outside and take interesting photos.

    I've owned and used the GR1 (film), GRD 1 & 4 and the first APSC model. They're all quite different from each other but unique in their own way. If you want to get your hands on an old digital camera with great B&W I'd recommend looking at the old Sigma DP cameras. Also saw I commented on the 35mmc post 04:48 😁

    • @whythesenotes-adventuresin5576
      @whythesenotes-adventuresin5576 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd go for the DP2 Merrill for a different focal length to complement your GRd, unless you just love wide angle. Just be aware that this specific camera is susceptible to the main control knob getting dust or something - a bit too sensitive & jumps easily. A minor inconvenience but an annoyance nonetheless.
      The Ricoh's quickness (snap focus, etc.) are a perfect match to the Merrill's slow methodical way of shooting & processing - it takes about 8 seconds to save a file whether JPG or RAW or both - processing the data is what slows it down, not write speed.
      Some people swear by the original dp series but the dp Merrill series produces amazing JPGs - in my opinion.
      Since they all take the same batteries, I consider them evil twins. Ricoh's quick, spontaneous shooting to Sigma's slow methodical way of shooting.

    Really enjoyed watching this. 2 years ago I bought a GRDIII purely because there's no dedicated macro mode on my Pentax Q or lenses. So one winter morning I'm down at Uraga, where the straits lead into Tokyo to do a sunrise time lapse on my Q. "While I'm waiting I might as well snap off some shots on the Ricoh" I thought to myself. Holy Cow, I was absolutely blown away with the quality of the beach and seascape pics I got! A quick question, I’m using a sony apsc camera for many years now (street & events) and it‘s still nice, but would love to buy a second street photography/party camera.

    • @shutterslaps4938
      @shutterslaps4938  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. There’s a few factors at play here, such as price and purpose… if you want a total street beast that will give you the fastest speed and sharpest image, then the GRiii will be the “best”.
      Lets change gears for a sec… just so you’re aware the GRDiv and original GR (16mp) are both highly sought after models and can fetch a high price- personally I would look for either of them.
      I have used the GRD3 for street and loved it. Plenty sharp, plenty fast for me. A great everyday street shooter. But I’m noticing that the market for all these cameras are going bananas - the grd3 can go for as much as a GR classic …
      Like I said, for me I would go for the GR classic or the GRDiv
      But this recommendation is from a geeky camera user…. If your more of a mainstream user (no judgement) and are not comfortable with quirks and old tech- stick with the gr3 😅

    this was such an interesting video! i actually sold my gr3 and got a gr2 for $300 used and a grd4 for $200 used. that’s half the price of a gr3 and for me, way more fun to shoot both. there’s something you can’t quite explain about these older cameras. i truly believe vintage glass and bodies capture the souls of those who used them in the past. there’s unmistakable personality that you can spend hours trying to emulate post process, but won’t ever be able to get it.
    i like shooting jpeg personally, because for me, it emulates shooting on film. i only shoot raw if it’s for professional use or if i’m really just trying to create a print-worthy photo. otherwise, sooc jpegs are magical on these older Ricoh cameras!

    It's beyond me why manufacturers like to confuse their customers. Especially with this camera line up. Gets so convoluted, why not GR1, GR2, GR3, etc? Even big chip manufacturers did this, like with the Pentium. I have the Ricoh GR 16mp and it's a great camera. I had to make sure when I bid on Ebay that I was not accidentally bidding on the 10mp model. I know people do this on auction sites to gain an advantage and sell an older cheaper model for the newer one.

    @Shutter Slaps Hi, I have a question that I’m having a hard time finding an answer to in forums and videos. It’s a bit if a compartmentalized question (sorry).
    (1)
    Is the grd(1) a jpeg only camera? I know it can shoot raw, but in realistic terms I can’t tell if anyone takes its raw capabilities seriously or what peoples thoughts on it are. Seems that all the praise for this camera is in its jpeg capabilities.
    I’m very interested in the grd(1) for the unique look of its sensor, but I feel that I need to be able to shoot raw.
    (2)
    Is the grd iv significantly better at raw? And if so, does that, in your opinion, outweigh the charm of the grd(1)? (Or in my case justify a grd iv over a grd(1)).
    (3)
    If neither, would you say that the gr would be the best of the three cameras if I want to shoot raw?
    I understand that these questions are lacking a lot of context about my desires and are therefore highly subjective, but I’m curious what you might have to say.
    Thanks :)

    • @shutterslaps4938
      @shutterslaps4938  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Short answer, the Raw mode on the GRD1 is unusable for and kind of fast paced shooting. If you're taking landscapes on a tripod .... then maybe you can shoot raw. But for any street shooting or quick family snaps, I don't think it's practical (12 second write times).
      The GRD IV or the GR original would be my pick if you want the charm of the old cameras in a faster Raw format.
      Cheers
