Listening to Jocko has allowed me to develop the mindset to kill my excuses and lose 80lbs in 6 months. I couldn't run 1 mile without stopping multiple times but this weekend I'm running my first half marathon! Discipline = Freedom!
Truck driver, 14 hours on, 10 hours off, and limitations on free showers. No excuses! 30 minutes spent with small exercise mat, one kettle bell, and one dumbbell. Lots of other drivers strange looks too. No excuses!!! Get after it!

I’m also a truck-driver.13 days on,1 off. My company is very short-handed.70 plus hrs. every week. I was looking at the Jocko Store, looking for some shirts to buy. This was six weeks ago, they didn’t have any shirts in 4xl. I was pissed-off! I got back in the gym 11/2-2 hrs five to seven days a week now. I’m down 22 lbs, and just got my first Jocko shirt today in the mail today. This is just the start for me! Jocko is a national treasure! I’m fifty years old, and I have more energy now than I did twenty years ago. I’m not gonna stop! Get in the game people!
I play this for my children every morning. What do you know? The number of excuses in the household has gone waaaaay down…. Pure magic. Nothing but deep love for Jocko.

I think this lines up well with Jordan Petersons worldview that once you start engaging the world in ways in which you believe it to be true you will become a much better person.
It's a bit more abstract than that. I'll warn you ahead of time that I am not very good with words, but I'll do my best. Jordan Peterson's "truth" is strongly tied to practicality; if an action is useful in you accomplishing your goal then it is a truthful action. Sitting around overthinking the situation, procrastinating, and waiting for the unrealistically perfect moment; if you know in your heart that this is not going to help you get after it then you are going to be a miserable person. A clear thinker who can see that short time suffering will lead to accomplishing his goal and toughs that suffering out will be a happier, more courageous person at the end.
SugarSmear I thank you a lot for your comment, what you're describing is exactly the situation I'm finding myself in since over 10 years. I know well HOW I got to come to this point, and I think I also know how to get out of it, but actually doing it is quite another story and much harder. Yet, it always feel encouraging to hear somebody describe the situation so accurately that you feel you get one more key to open another door to freedom. Thank you very much :)
Dude, I just recapped on Peterson’s interview with Joe from ep 877, I needed to be reminded of the power of truth, chaos, and order. Came to Jocko’s channel for some extra inspiration. Low and behold, this is the first video I watched, and now I feel like the universe is really trying to show me the importance of truth. I followed a strict line of truth for about 8months, everything was going great, I started to fall behind, now I’m being reminded of square one all over again.
A lot of the advice I’ve heard from Jocko has taught me to face new challenges, step up to the plate when no one else will, and know that anything can be done. It’s all just one small task at a time. Nothing is hard if you break it down to one small, seemingly insignificant, task at a time. Also don’t get worked up about shit you can’t change or prevent from happening. Let the inconvenience teach you. Let hardships callus you. If something negatively affects you and you don’t have any way of stopping it, toss your anger aside, get up and get to work. Forget it. Keep your eyes on the task at hand and soon enough, you won’t give a fuck about the thing that negatively affected you anyways.
“You don’t have the support -lie” and this is the truth if you really look at it. Where do we all find strength and support when all else fails? Exactly. There is support if you only look in the right direction, and if you believe in a higher power.
This is as powerful as his video on extreme ownership. Granted, in life, often there are other factors in why something happened, but if you never OWN the situation and examine what part you played in producing the outcome, you will keep repeating the situation as you didn’t learn anything. There are “reasons” for why things happen, but excuses are used to keep you from recognizing the REAL reason...that you’re lazy, unmotivated, don’t want the goal enough to pursue relentlessly, etc.
You also need to Know Thy Self. Otherwise, you won't be able to direct channel your impulses into the actions that get results. Example: If you have ADHD, you need to know the systems to build to signal your priorities and to channel your Hyperfocus toward your goals.
On Saturdays and Sundays I've been having ''issues'', procastinating and not going to work, even though they are the best days, lots of customers at home.......This video gave me an excellent idea, I totally recomend it, if you read this post: Simply make a list of all those lies and excuses you tell yourself not to do the things you need to do, make a list! I already started mine, doesn't take an hour, just two minutes, think about it for a second then get out there, work my full shift. For example, on top of my list is: ''I'm too comfy, I can make it up next day, I just finished a zoom meeting and need a few more minutes to ''prepare something'' SUUUURE!! LIEEEE!!.........those ''few more minutes'' turn into hours, and come next day and do the same thing, until I end up doing the opposite: to leave that soo ''badly needed'' break time for next day and so on, so NO MORE F$ING LIES!!..............
This is exactly what Jordan Peterson means by “Don’t say(&/or do) anything that makes you weak”. I remember hearing that at age 17, with a broken past and an absent future. Now, I just turned 23, with a beautiful wife and a daughter on the way, and my future couldn’t be anymore ideal. Sure, it’s been hard keeping a stable job- minimum wage isn’t exactly adequate for minimum living at the moment- but my partner and I are healthy and happy. Sure, we’re a bit stressed (it’s gonna be a lean Christmas for a couple of years), but it’s nothing we can’t handle. Life comes at you from all fronts, whether you pay attention and own it, or hide and ignore it. So get out there. Make the smallest, honest victory you can truthfully tolerate being proud of and start from there. Rinse, repeat. Listen to your resentment and self-loathing- that’s the sound of the keys to paradise rattling
Spot on. One thing all vets can agree on is that the military taught us….. we can do anything if motivated to do it. We were created in the image of God…. We can do ALL things. You’ve got the Power
I would've loved to serve under Jocko. Phenomenal leader in everything he does. When I went through boot camp, "Good" was our company motto. And when we were performing evolutions, we would scream "Discipline equals Freedom!" Get some!
Here's my situation if anyone wants to offer their advice I'd appreciate it. When I was in the 3rd year of my degree studying finance and accounting I got diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Basically I get the sudden urge to shit with almost no warning and it got so bad that I couldn't continue my studies. The breaking point was when a lecturer asked me in front of the entire class if I was taking drugs because he noticed I would leave at least 3 times per lecture. The embarrassment and the shame I felt then destroyed me, so I said to myself. Enough is enough. I couldn't keep putting myself through this torture. But now it's 5 years later and what progress have I made in life? I work night shift in a hotel mostly cleaning. I've been doing this for 5 years now and the only way I can describe my life is with the title of a film you may have heard of. 'Ground Hog Day' To reduce the amount of "symptoms" I will eat once every 2-3 days. This is the only way I've found that makes life barely workable. Anyway I guess my question to the Jocko and Echo family is What am I meant to do? I feel like I'm stuck. I can't move. I'm frozen. And I guess that's all I've got time for now. This is Ryan, Out.
Ryan. Check out the Keto-Genic Diet. Read about it learn it google it against your disease maybe it's the solice your looking for maybe not but it's worth a shot.
Keto for sure. It might not work but would be a great place to start. If you decide to do it, be patient with it. Might take 6 months to start seeing real results.
I can relate bro! I have ulcerative colitis. Have you seen a doctor? What meds are you on? Keto doesn't seem to work for me. I have better luck with the SCD Diet. Facebook has a couple of good support groups. It sucks but once you find the right meds and diet things should mellow out. Don't give up! Keep experimenting! Keep trying! It's exhausting but you'll eventually find something that works of you keep searching!
So I’ll give you all a serious warning, about me taking this in the wrong direction. About 2 years ago I decided to get fit. So I woke up one morning to run 3 miles. At mile 1 my knee started to hurt, but I kept going at it because no excuses. 2 miles of pain later, my knee swole up but I got on with my day. Then 2 weeks later I was told by my doctor that I had torn my meniscus. I have been dealing with that injury for the last 2 years, just trying to get healthy again. At certain points I would try to run but my knee would feel like it was falling apart. Jocko is absolutely right, especially young people have so much potential. But we also have plenty of time to reach that potential. There is no need to rush. If you are feeling a pain you have never felt before, just stop. Try again next week.
I think the reason people make up excuses all the time is that they, at their core, aren't sold on why they should do said thing they're procrastinating from.
This is a really important point. "I don't have time" is often a polite fiction for saying "this is not a priority for me." Other times, it means "I need to learn/build a better time management system".
I broken my ancle, three places, I do everything on foot, no car. No one offered me a ride to the store or anything. Going back and forth to Walmart, 16 miles... never went to a doctor, no cast. Pain can be a useful motivator. Broken ancle was no excuse not to look after myself. Took three months to heal
That means that TH-cam is a place where you can easily find a confirmation bias for any paradigm and/or narrative. Life is much more complex than simplistic formulas like Jocko's philosophy or your comment.
This Man has changed my life in a way that I could never even dreamed about it. The Donut one really hit home. I will never look at donuts the same ever... If I eat one Jacko is going to be in my head ripping me a new ass hole. Thanks! Boss I appreciate everything you do.🙏🙏🙏🤔🤔🤔😎😎🇲🇽🇺🇸🇲🇽🇺🇸
I think anytime I recognize that I'm making an excuse, I'll have to tell the ego that it's a lie and then stand up for the trith. I truly feel like my life is starting at 43 and I have to get over that part, otherwise my life will be lack
Excuses are largely the easy way out of doing work. My topic for my own subscribers this week. Have you ever met someone who keeps saying they want to change physically or career-wise or just be a better person? Then year in and out they stay the same. The reason is more complex than you think. Part of it is laziness for sure. But there is another aspect. We, as humans, are comfortable with what is our normal--for good or bad. Many actually fear the change for the better--as it is unknown territory. It seems strange but this is what we are in our subconscious--the unhealthy person can't picture being healthy, the unsuccessful actually fears to an extent success. We defeat this by being aware of it and following the simple adage that there is nothing to fear---but the fear itself. If we conquer this fear of the unknown the excuses vanish. Something to think about this week and I hope this helps someone out there---Charles
Recently I blistered my foot bad from a long run so I was doing low impact exercise (bike/swim) and when it came time to get back into it I took an extra day off because I convinced myself it hadn’t healed fully yet, even though it was fine. You’re brain knows all your weak point so don’t listen at all
Truth is not an oversimplification for life. Base though not in feeling but, in fact and truth. Pull the facts of a life situation together , extract the truth, make your choice, executive your discipline, gain your privilege.
I started going to the gym a year ago, and i slowly lost motivation. A few months ago i started making excuses for not going to the gym, and ended up working out 1-2 times a week instead of 5. And whats weird was, i still wondered why i couldnt progress.
My Dad always tells me that, as a child, his grandfather used to always tell him this: "Can't never did nothing". Poor grammar, but there's a truth in there. He tells me that really hit home with him, especially since his grandfather was stone blind, but in spite of that still managed and worked a dairy farm. Oh and my Dad gets things done like no other man I have ever known personally in my life. He works at least 80 hours a week, in spite of being nearly 60 and crippled, and bogged down by frequent migraines, but he doesn't make excuses, and I have never seen him quit. It's only by the grace of God that he doesn't collapse under the strain. He's hands down the best man I've ever known.
Listening to Jocko has allowed me to develop the mindset to kill my excuses and lose 80lbs in 6 months. I couldn't run 1 mile without stopping multiple times but this weekend I'm running my first half marathon! Discipline = Freedom!

Jocko is absolutely right, especially young people have so much potential. But we also have plenty of time to reach that potential. There is no need to rush.
If you are feeling a pain you have never felt before, just stop. Try again next week.
josh m running is one of the worst thing to do to get fit.
wow i am inspired, learned a lot, and lastly, i was able to find myself again. keep them popping it means a lot to me.
Thank the lord for these two gentlemen.
17 people like making excuses
Thank you Jocko for everything!!
I think the reason people make up excuses all the time is that they, at their core, aren't sold on why they should do said thing they're procrastinating from.
This is a really important point. "I don't have time" is often a polite fiction for saying "this is not a priority for me."
Other times, it means "I need to learn/build a better time management system".
Jocko loves this so much haha. He's having such a great time!
I usually find talk like this vapid alpha male bravado but Jocko’s message hits me. He’s awesome.
196 likes and not a single dislike... That means Jocko speaks the truth
i am almost sure we are all chronic excuse makers and thats why we liked lol
That means that TH-cam is a place where you can easily find a confirmation bias for any paradigm and/or narrative. Life is much more complex than simplistic formulas like Jocko's philosophy or your comment.
Narek Khachatryan whatever :D
I bet all those dislikes are because of you.
Debashish Das o
You can do it! I beleive in you. We are all capable of greatness!

I think anytime I recognize that I'm making an excuse, I'll have to tell the ego that it's a lie and then stand up for the trith. I truly feel like my life is starting at 43 and I have to get over that part, otherwise my life will be lack
Jocko is the uncle I wish I had growing up
Echo and Jocko we need excerpts 2.0 to roll out.
Without excuses to hide behind, you are free to fail - and then get back up again, unfettered.
You’re brain knows all your weak point so don’t listen at all
Listening to Jocko has relax my fears of working at the post office.
If you gave this a thumbs down it because your LIFE is a lie.
THOSE ARE LIES 🇺🇸
If you don't live the life that you want to live, it's because you a trapped into lies, and many lies are self induced...
Truth is not an oversimplification for life. Base though not in feeling but, in fact and truth. Pull the facts of a life situation together , extract the truth, make your choice, executive your discipline, gain your privilege.
Love it Jocko!!!! Excuses are like assholes everyone's got one
Jocko is such a good communicator
Basically - Harden up. Do it. See things as they are.
Was going to use that too sore excuse not to get on the mats tonight. This fixed me right up
I listen to this every other day right now to keep myself motivated. Thank you so much for this video 💗
Damn. Straight, sharp, no bull.
Looked up best excuses to get out of work and this is what popped up😂
