As a husband, father, student and Active Duty member. Life comes fast everything demands attention. Waking up early to workout is key. Waking up before wife and kids or powering through after kids go to bed. What you do in the darkness is key. Balance is key if you focus on yourself you’ll lose touch with wife and kids. If you give kids all your time and energy you’ll lose touch or influence at work. Begin good habits, eat healthier, workout more, run more, pray more spent time with kids more drink less. Time management is key. It don’t get easier Its lonely at the top. I’ve cried alone sometimes. The car breaks down, the wife gets mad and the house needs repairs it seems like at the same time. Prioritize and execute, depression is a luxury sitting around wont get the bills paid. Salute to service keep trucking. (With that said I was feeling sorry for myself Im going to get a little run in)
You can always fit working out in to some capacity. I've done push ups in the kitchen while cooking dinner. I've gone down and done sets of squats in the basement and used rest periods to clean things up around the house. I've taken my kids to the park and done sets of pulls ups on the swing sets. You can always get it done if you want to. Sometimes it's not as efficient, but you can still get it done.
Pro tip: you can take naps too. You're not cheating anyone but yourself if you can't function at a high level if you have a busy schedule. Make time, not just for working out, but for taking care of your brain.
Wake up earlier. That is the easiest way to find the time. My fitness journey was sporadic until I decided to work for a company that does 7am-5:30pm weekdays. I started waking up at 5:30am. That wasn't early enough. I tried 5, not good enough, 4:30 still feel rushed. My alarm is set for 4am now. That finally gives me enough time to do all the things I need to because I'm gone for 11hrs of the day.
I've been primary care for 2 boys from birth until they went to school. They stayed home with my while I worked from home. I constantly had to evolve my workout routines to fit their changing demands. One thing that worked great is I found a gym with a daycare inside for $30 per month. They would watch them for free while I worked out for 1 hour. It was a huge blessing. Maybe the writer can find that.
If your a 65+ ‘senior citizen’ closing in on 70 like us and blessed to have been on your own version of a warriors path your entire life let us know. Happy New Year Jocko/crew/everyone.
I’m not a parent, but I’ve heard from people that are parents that getting your kids involved with your workout or getting your kids to workout with you helps a ton. Gets their energy out and they get time with you that they want. Hope this helps someone!
Hey Jocko - I need to tell you... I have struggled all my life to learn and know some of the concepts you talk about here. I grew up super poor (plss poor - low income housing) with parents who were deadbeats and didn't really know this stuff themselves, let alone, how to teach it to us kids and I always dreamed of someday digging out of that lifestyle and making something of myself while creating a life worth living. The problem was - I didn't know what I didn't know so then I didn't know the questions I should be asking, I didn't know the concepts I was missing, I didn't know all those things that successful people teach their kids that I very definitely missed out on so as much as I tried and as hard as I worked at it, I just seemed to always stay in the same spot - always spinning my wheels and never being able to dig out of that rut of poverty that I so dreamed of moving on from. Crazy enough, this life has followed me into my 40's and here I am, still struggling but I've been praying about it and working very hard to overcome my holdbacks. Wildly enough, the Lord answered a big prayer for me this December 2024 when I got laid off at a job I absolutely hated. Where some people would have lost their minds over it (former me would have done this too), I was able to get unemployment for 12 wks and because of that, I am choosing to make the best of it. I am recognizing this as my chance to sit down and dig into some good TH-cam videos and books and to really set sail on that journey toward becoming the person I've always wanted to be - including physically, mentally, financially, and everything in between. Yes, I've been watching a lot of financial freedom videos (mostly my favorite - David Greene Real Estate) but what I realized was that I was missing so much more than that financial aspect... I was missing the foundational life principles, processes, procedures - habits, systems, organizational skills. Nobody had ever even taken the time to teach me that and THAT is what I am realizing, I need first if I'm ever going to move beyond my current state of who I am as a person. I have watched a boat load of videos in my quest to learn these things and to help me work on my growth and development both personally and professionally but none of them really seem to cover the content I need first. Thank you for the information you share in your videos and for keeping it on the middle shelf where most all of us can relate, understand the concepts, and then apply, and execute. I'd sure give the world for you to go back through and do a full video series that literally just takes us back to square one and teaches us those concepts that successful parents teach their kids that the rest of us are missing out on. Yes, we need the financial aspect and we'll get there - but at the moment, I desperately need the foundational basic concepts on just how to be a successful person as a whole in life, how to organize my time, how to set habits in motion... all those seemingly logical and "understood" concepts that not all of us got growing up. THIS is my chance to re-invent myself and who I am for the next 12wks while I'm on unemployment. THIS is my chance to become the person I've always wanted to be but I need your help with a video series that just goes back to square one and teaches all those basics that it seems like so many people are missing in childhood these days and parents are failing to teach... (*** Disclaimer: I am working on getting my real estate agents license this next 12 weeks, as well as a Medical Risk Management certification (extremely hard course and test to pass) and then I am also doing a few other things so rest assured, I'm not sitting back or sitting still... this is just my chance that the Lord gave me to really dig in deep and re-invent myself life I've always wanted to). Thank you for all you do - your content and the work you put into it is not lost on me. Thank you soooo much!!
This is all so inspiring. The Lords timing is perfect and there are NO coincidences. I very recently asked Him for guidance in my decision to change careers. Asked Him if it was the right move and to send me a sign to confirm. The VERY next morning He came through for me; a good friend who works at the company I was thinking of applying to called and told me a position opened up that morning. One of their guys resigned without warning. Just turned in all his gear and company phone and walked out. If that ain't a sign I don't know what is! Sounds like He is doing the same for you now and im really happy for you. Get after it!
Check out Kevin Samuels. You most likely need a personal coach that can mentor you out of the rut and help you catch up to where you should be at your age
Echo is correct. W babies you got to dump the all or nothing mindsetwith training. Once my baby was asleep I ran to my shed and if I got 20 min in then great. Sometimes he slept 1.5 hours and I got myself a huge workout. And regardless, he grew and went onto less but longer, more predictable naps. And once he was a year old, I was able to put him the gym daycare so I train just as much as I did before being a mom. Ain't gonna lie - that first year was HARD but like jocko says, the discipline carried me through. Some days I just did a crap ton of lunges lol
100% I know we aint all seals or giant workouters, but this (like most things) translates into plenty aspects of life and specific scenarios. This is very valuable. Adapt. Make it work. FIND THE TIME. And of course, reevaluate priorities.
Father of 3 here and avid exercise enthusiast! Kiddos are 6,4, and 2 months. Over time I have a decent in home gym. adjustable dumbbells and kettlebells, squat rack w/ pull-up bar. My older kids are to the point I let them have their iPad time and are in the basement with me while I exercise. And baby naps after morning milk. While she naps that’s when I hit the weights for a solid 45 minutes. 💯agree with Jocko mindset is everything!
@Carlos.Rivera Good. Use your 4 year old's body weight as extra resistance. Hold her and squat, lunge, toss her in the air, lift her over your head again and again, compete with her ("Can you do more burpees than me?") I also have a VERY clingy 3 year old. I look at his body weight as extra resistance and try to do abdominal training with him on top of me. I always say "See if you can do this too!" To my workout. Usually he just wants to cling to me, and that's good too.
Got a couple dumbbells and a barbell, building a at home gym slowly but the at home workouts with little ones is the way to go. Can hit pushups anywhere at anytime.
It's also really important to remember. This is a season. So, really, the key is flexibility in your mindset and in your schedule for what's important to you.
Bro should get adjustable dumbbells. They can be adjusted to 40kgs each I think and one does not really need more than 40kgs to have a good workout unless you are a professional. See the ones pewdiepie has. They certainly are not cheap but neither is a squat bar.
My 2.5 yr old son saw me running on the treadmill, he patiently waited for me to finish then made me put him on the treadmill so he could run too. It interrupted my work-out for about 5 minutes. Then he actively tried to pull my palm off the floor as i was doing pushups. I made grunting noises which he found funny and so he ran away laughing and left me a lone. I was able to complete my work-out, but it took maybe 10-15 min longer than it usually does. I did not see it as an "interruption," I just saw it as father-son bonding time. I worked 25 out of 31 days in December, and I feel a bit guilty I'm not spending enough time with him so I cherish every and any moment we have together.
As a father and husband i am busy with work or family all day. My solution was to find time when everyone is asleep. My job starts at 6:30am so I wake up at 4am. It is actually real easy now and I love being up that early.
when I fall short of workout time, I get creative and turn to very functional fitness ... platecarrier on while house cleaning ... pull up bar in my home office door war ... kettlebell carry and a make trash/recycle trips to the bins, etc.
Always enjoy listening to the these two! Great advice, insight and a few laugh out loud moments 😎 thanks Jocko and Echo! Also love the endings with that music and what Jocko says. Merry Christmas 💯
LOL: kettlebell swings while the 2 year old is throwing food everywhere at dinner time 😆 But in all honesty this sounds like a situation where this person might have to strategically stack her workouts in 5-7 increments throughout the day… squats during a nap, kettlebells at dinner, maybe 10-15min of HIIT early in the am before baby wakes up. Mad props to this person who wants to be and is so dedicated 🙏
Huge fan of yours!! Love what you do and what you represent. Probably won’t ever get to this message but if you do it would be really cool. I’m in the Air Force and stationed at AFSOC Hurlburt field… it would be pretty badass if you can swing by my squadron and teach my security forces peeps rolling/combatives techniques to better protect themselves. And a little leadership skills and training… we need it desperately. Again don’t want to take up unnecessary time from you. Just figured it would be worth a shot 🤷🏾♀️
I have rearranged my own bedroom to accommodate a bench, pull up bar going up shortly and looking for an affordable squat rack as going through a divorce and now the primary care taker for my two girls. I get up early and push it out, or they are old enough I actually show them what I am doing.
I started to wake up at 5 so my kids wouldn’t interrupt. Then my kids started waking up at 5:15-5:30 regularly. Started waking up at 4:30 and kids waking up at 5. There’s no winning. Just gotta get it in here and there, get it done
Not saying this the case here, but I have noticed people I know that do nothing say they are all or nothing so I respond with “so you choose nothing”? Agree with the advice. I don’t love waking up at 3:30 am but in order for me to get it I it has to happen.
Ive got 2 HS girls that babysit on the side, $5/hr or $50/week for afterschool. Reach out to single moms for churches that do this weekly and we trade other days with appointments. I taxi kids before and after school, too.
Wife has Parkinson's and can't move well. When she wakes it's seconds to the porta potty and I lift her. I'm 40# overweight and I popped a knee 2 years ago. I got a silent stationary bike next to the bed and I stretch on the floor. No way gonna cut on the knee before I lose the weight and then give it a chance to heal. I can't afford to go further down because the wife needs me
I just stopped sleeping and I get lots done now. I’m losing muscle weight and my mental health is declining rapidly but I’m definitely grinding boys. No room for weakness here. I’ll sleep when I die, ya know?
Yeah man. Go do your day job for 9-10 hours. Drag your butt home and help with the kids, dinner, dishes, laundry, yard work, etc. hit the sack by midnight if you are lucky. Then wake your ass up at 4am and do a workout on 4 hours or less of sleep. These people are off in outer space. The real advice here would be hey, focus on your family and give yourself permission to do that. It won’t be long before the kids are out of your hair and you can go back to grinding workouts.
Where's your 6 pack, Joko!? If your ass is doing deadlifts and 4 am. every morning, your ass better have a 6 pack next year. I'm tired of these damn shenanigans!
Did you really just advise leaving your 2 year old alone in the highchair while they eat in order to workout? I feel like you just make shit up as you go. Hey Jocko I got advice for you. How about you wake up at 230 am and ship your Jocko fuel shit out in a timely manner. 430 ain't cutting it. Delegate man come on, practice what you preach. 😂
I love hearing or reading in the comments all these solutions. Obviously none of you work over 84 hrs a week every day all year long. When hou work that many hrs a week there is no extra time like that.
@GrindSzn7 no I agree and that happens but full blown workouts are not possible. Now with that said for 14 days on and 14 days off. So 14 days your tired like a mf. 14 days of you hit it as hard as you can. Then start all over again
Are you an investment banker? If so, pay your dues, get promoted out of the “grunt work” position(s), or move on to a boutique shop or transition into private equity, where the hours aren’t as crazy.

Doing some simple workouts in front of toddler is a blast. toddlers are so easily impressed and are the best hype guys.
Including the child and making it look fun will help introduce them to moving and staying fit themselves in addition getting it done yourself.
You can always fit working out in to some capacity.

Good tip, think 20 minutes ish is optimal and Jocko has said previously he does these kind of naps.
Definitely agree

I do wimpy workouts minimal flux ...so be it😂
im 53 too 😂ha ha
Yeah man. Go do your day job for 9-10 hours. Drag your butt home and help with the kids, dinner, dishes, laundry, yard work, etc. hit the sack by midnight if you are lucky. How about you wake up at 230 am and ship your Jocko fuel shit out in a timely manner. 430 ain't cutting it. Delegate man come on, practice what you preach. 😂
Or find a close gym, or put camera like Dog Watching vs. etc so when you are in the gym, you know what happens and check your home.
I love hearing or reading in the comments all these solutions. Obviously none of you work over 84 hrs a week every day all year long. When hou work that many hrs a week there is no extra time like that.
True we don’t but you can easily do 2 sets of pushups pull ups and squats at home (I’m not trying to be rude)
@GrindSzn7 no I agree and that happens but full blown workouts are not possible. Now with that said for 14 days on and 14 days off. So 14 days your tired like a mf. 14 days of you hit it as hard as you can. Then start all over again
