    Back in the "good" old days with film cameras, most compact cameras had 38 or 40mm Lenses, the best Lens on a compact camera sits on the Leica Minilux a 40mm 2.4. Some day I will expect to see a compact digital camera like the size and style of the Minox 35 ML with a fullframe sensor !

    The best just got better. I had a GR several years back and loved it. Unfortunately it had a fight with a tiny wave on the sea and lost. I miss it. Things I would have improved on it were: Change the charging port to USB-C. Check. Improve auto-focus speed. Check. Increase the Mega Pixels to allow more cropping in post and bigger prints. Check. Make the field of view narrower. Check. Add weather sealing. No check. Make the lens non-retractable so it's more discreet and doesn't suck in dust and water. No check. Keep the crappy-looking aesthetics so you don't draw attention. Check. Keep the excellent size, weight and ergonomics. Check. Looks like most of my wish list has come true. I'm seriously considering this camera now.

  • @TerraMagnus
    @TerraMagnus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    I used to carry the original APS-C Ricoh GR everywhere. I still have it. But I've got that pesky problem where dust gets on the sensor and you can't get it off without disassembling the camera and re-assembling it. They didn't solve this with the GR III. It's *harder* for dust to get in now. But it's also harder to get it back out again.
    This focal length change is so tempting, though. This could become a proper X100 killer just based on true pocketability. You've got no excuse to not carry a GR everywhere if you own one.

    • @Boatzerama
      @Boatzerama 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fitted a lens filter which stops the dust from entering. Only thing is you have to be careful not to make it dirty or worse scratch it.

      I've had the dust problem with my gr2 aswell. Until it fell out of my hands and fell in the floor real hard... Barely a skratsh on the Ricoh but the impact cleaned the sensor. 😅

    • @Monkey_D_Cluffy
      @Monkey_D_Cluffy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went 3 years no dust, with a cheap lil uv filter over the open element helped. Putting it my pocket with the flash open gave me dust

    • @TerraMagnus
      @TerraMagnus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michael4196 I've had the X100F since it came out. It's gone around the world with me. I don't baby it. And I've never had dust issues. This is particular to the Ricoh GR family. With the X100 family, the lens body is fixed in place. With the Ricoh, the lens body retracts into the camera body when you power the camera off. This creates air gaps to the sensor and active imports dust from the outside of the lens body to the inside of the camera body.

    0:12 Alright, show off. Kai is my favourite TH-cam camera reviewer since his DRTV days. I bought my RIcoh GR IIIx after watching this review. Been using it for the past 1 week now. Didn't regret my purchase. Actually bought my Ricoh GR III slightly later to cover wide angle shoot. But still, 40mm is the best for those who can't decide to go for 50mm or 335mm. I just hope that Ricoh will do a weather-sealed RIcoh GR IV, with better battery life. The current battery in its DB-110 battery sucks, so I bought an additional batteries for my daily shoot. Bw, keep it up Kai. Looking forward to your next review. -/TR

  • @vincevinnyp9224
    @vincevinnyp9224 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have gone back and forth on fixed focal length compacts so many times. There are always going to be compromises, I can see this is a really good street camera as per the title, but for a camera to always have with you then I don't think it's versatile enough. 40mm focal length, is OK, but has limitations. However no viewfinder, no tilting screen, average AF, no 4k, no mic in, even no built in flash are all slight downsides, that add up, and it's not even the smallest option.

    • @civilizedperson3322
      @civilizedperson3322 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. If you need a small camera and agree to use fixed focal length you'll be mostly OK with the features and quality of a premium phone. It does not even have a wide aperture. For the price and size of the Ricoh, just go and buy a decent iteration of Sony RX100 or even a Lumix LX100 LX10 or TZ100/200 camera. Each one has much better value for the money than the Ricoh when it comes to street photography. A one-inch camera is perfect for most situations, and photography is not about pixel peeping.

    I disagree, 40mm equiv is a too narrow fov for street, unless you only take portraits. With a wider lens you can still crop in post but the other way around doesn't work. I just hope the tele converter works on the original GR III

    • @tonykeyworth3522
      @tonykeyworth3522 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As an owner of a GRIII I half expect Ricoh to release "new" cameras in every possible focal length to maximize profit. So many compact/pocket cameras these days have terrific zooms. How many great quality small cameras do I own (prime & zoom) that shoot between 35mm - 50mm ? How many stars are there in the sky? My diminutive Canons are superb. Fuji is long overdue to release an updated compact. I'll stash my cash in my 401K till I see something a bit more impressive. Choice is a good thing but patience is a virtue . . . Still prefer the RX100 series up to V-a. It's smaller, zooms, fast as a ninja and very sharp. No it doesn't have an aps-c sensor. But the 1" type is better than I first thought it would be. And it has a viewfinder, charges through USB, the screen tilts and it blasts 20fps in raw which is actually very handy. I think Ricoh should step up their game. The camera has great optics but the rest just feels old. I would rather go with the Canon G1X mark III if I was hellbent on getting an aps-c.

    I paid 280 EUR for the Fuji XF10 last year and can't be happier. Perfect travel cam! I like the 28mm equiv. because having the APS-C sensor and excellent denoising cropping to 35 or 50 is still totally fine. You get it all in one!

    My favorite focal lengths have always been the 28mm and the 40mm. I'm so happy that Ricoh apparently feels the same way! This why I love Ricoh so much. And apparently you can add a teleconverter that makes it a 75mm? That's awesome! I only wish they added better video specs, then I truly believe it would be the best all in one camera there is. Unfortunately my little ZV-1 is fitting that bill the best and I don't see this new Ricoh dethroning it in that department. And unfortunately I can't afford to own the two Ricoh gr iii's AND the zv-1. So I'm stuck with the Sony for now. It's just way too capable for such a small package (that's what she said?) And its output is actually pretty damn impressive. Especially for video in 4k with stabilization. But if I could afford it I would own all 3 actually. Have the best of all worlds.
    Oh ya is this going to go for the same price as the gr iii?

    • @domtomazo
      @domtomazo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was interested in the TC to be able to take some nice portraits during travels, where the 40mm otherwise would be fine for me. It was very cryptic on the website with the TC, but if I read it correctly the TC will give you 75mm in the 50mm crop mode... so it is 1,5x TC. So in the default mode it would be 60mm on the GRIIIx. Not sure why they would tell us with the crop mode on... maybe the TC does not cover the whole image circle..? Strange

    • @akyerit
      @akyerit 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@domtomazo I think I might have heard different actually. That it would normally convert it to a 75 roughly and in crop mode to like a 115 or somewhere thereabouts. I'll try to find that link

      @@leeraxd word ya i ended up selling the zv-1 and honestly don't miss it too much. Especially (and surprisingly) with my new iPhone 13 pro. It seems to fill that gap and then some. And then I can use my real camera for A-roll and everything else. But for a proper street camera, I've been still using my fuji xf10. Perfect little edc street camera. I think im actually going to trade it for the lumix lx10 for whatever that's worth tho. Something about the look in that camera really speaks to me.

    I’m just about to buy a new GR after I killed my GR1 which has finally given up the ghost after 9 years, the best camera I’ve ever owned, I love the 28mm which I used for street, travel, everything, the multiple exposure feature is fantastic. If the GRiiix was 35mm I’d probably buy it, but I’m leaning towards the 28mm, and maybe updating my OMD and using that for tighter focal lengths or even wider than 28, then id have 2 cameras which are compact

    Just sent my broken GRIII and GR II for repair and was thinking of getting X100V if repair cost would be on the high side... but already miss my GR's so I guess I have to pay the repair bill and maybe get the X100V later. Or at least that's what I thought, before I saw the X model... Hmmmmmmmmm.
    I love the 28mm version, since I mostly use it to shoot wide in events where I carry 1D with long lens. But on family vacation I would sometimes prefer something that would give me tighter crop and subject separation for portraits. GRIII + GRIII X would be the perfect choice, but then again I kind of hate GR skin tones and can't fix it what ever I do, so maybe GRIII 28mm and X100V would the combo.

    So glad the chip shortage has lead to rehashing some older designs with improvements (eg X-T30 II). Ricoh really nailed it with this one. Hopefully the UK price drops a little - I was considering the fuji 27mm for my X-T30 but the 40mm GR is much more appealing for me but both purchases hard to justify at the moment.
