    For those who have the Ricoh GR III or IIIx, what made you choose one vs the other (i.e. how did you land on 28mm vs 40mm)? If you own both, when do you decide to shoot with one vs the other?

      i chose the GR iii, not just because it was the diary edition lol. i actually used to shoot on strictly a papershoot camera for an entire year. NO view finder @ 22mm f2.2 . what a year lol.
      now why the 28, i have a daughter whos runs around everywhere. the paper shoot was the best point and pray and i got exactly what i would want. top it off i never had a view finder so i basically guessed my composition and prayed i got the shot.
      this just goes with experiences. i also own a sony a6500 with a 35mm and 16 mm. you can see why i favor the wide focal length. i like the whole story, i love the mess of life in an image

    I bought the III because it has crop options for tighter shots. It's an apsc sensor, so some cropping isn't a problem. Can't go wider in-camera with the IIIx.

    I have both the length cameras. One is street edition, the other one is the urban edition. I take them on every trip and that’s pretty much all I need. I travel really compact and it all fits in a medium camera bag along with my filters, batteries, lens hood, and several accessories. I sold all my Fujifilm gear and now I am solely a Ricoh shooter. I mainly do street photography 🤙🏻

    I'm glad I got the GR III. During my Holiday in Greece, I found myself struggling to frame photos due to narrow streets. Yachts were also a little tricky to frame photos. I could see the iiix being so much more challenging to travel with.
    Overall, if I'm ever in the position to buy another camera, I'd purchase the X just for the options. However, the crop has worked well with no noticeable resolution loss.

    This is my first camera and I ended up with the GR IIIx HDF! I wanted the 40mm because I found I never really loved the 24mm on the iPhone and wanted something a bit different. I also ended up right he HDF purely because it was what is available, but I am excited to play with it and I’ve heard most folks almost never end up using the ND filter anyway

    I am a long-time Pentax shooter, I wanted to go to the GR because anytime I traveled my dslr would not leave the hotel very often, I would just use my phone. So the GR was perfect l, small compact and large sensor. I went with the GR3 because I experimented with my dslr with a 40mm and a 28mm lens to see which I used the most. Most of the time I had the 40mm I felt like I couldn't get far enough away quickly. It ruins the moment when you tell your family hey stay there doing what you are doing and don't mind me taking several steps away. Lol 😂

  • @gheeno.
    @gheeno. 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I had the GRIIIx but sold it for the III.
    It's easy for me to step forward and take the photo than to step back to take a photo. ( think of a tight space, such as a transit. )
    Also, the IIIx to me is easier to compose a scene.
    But I do miss my GIIIx for street photography since I don't have to be up close to the person to take the shot.

  • @AnthonyAwaken
    @AnthonyAwaken 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    To answer your question - I went with the GRIIIX...
    I am a product/lifestyle photographer, by trade. So, I'm always looking to get up-close to my subjects and curate my scenes. With that said, the 28mm focal length always triggers my OCD as it's so wide and often includes elements that I don't want in my frames, lol.
    I've been very happy with the versatility of the 40mm for travel, impromptu portraits, product photos, etc.
    There have been times where I would love to have both...But, that is only when I'm photographing architecture during my travels.

    If it's your only camera, I'd recommend a GRIII. With advances in AI upscaling, you can pretty much crop into 40-50mm with negligible penalty- even up to A4/A3 size prints. Keep the subject in the centre and you can avoid distortion pretty handily as well. If you already have a few primes or zooms on an ILC, then the GRIIIx makes a bit more sense as I find the 40mm perspective is a lot easier to literally just point and shoot with- not having to consider too much of what's in the frame or what's getting distorted towards the edges.
    GRIIIx was an easy choice for me. I found in the vast majority of my iPhone photos, I am usually "zooming" in by 1.5x which when considered with the 26-28mm lens of my iPhone, comes out to a 40mm field of view. It's just more natural to me to plant my feet a little further away and pinch to zoom a little. The only two GM primes I own for my Sony are a 35 and 50 1.4 so the 40mm, again, sits in that happy middle ground.

    I’ve owned all the Ricoh’s since the GRDIV in 2005. Tried the X on its release but soon went back to the original focal length. I have the HDF version now. It was a better choice for me. I never needed the ND filter.
    I’m still getting to grips with the hdf filter. It’s very subtle. I need to start looking for subjects that will noticeably benefit from its use.

    I hove both, and I am really torn between the two. I use them mostly for travel photography and really want to bring only one camera. I like the rendering of the griiix, but I noticed I shoot it almost always vertical, because I find it to tight. I also noticed that I find the griii most of the time to wide and dont like the distorted rendering.
    40mm vertically is the height of 28mm horizontaly, so I did some thinking and I cropped the griii to 1:1 ratio, a square format. And this has been a revelation to me, I thought I liked 40mm, but I actually liked 28mm square format.
    So now I use the griii in square format 90% of the time, and for 10% I can go wider by the press of a button.
    I still like the rendering more of the griiix, so maybe the ultimate goal would be a 28mm fullframe, cropped to a square format. Then I would get the rendering of a griiix an the field of view of a griii.

    I use the Zf and have the 28 and 40mm SE lenses. I love them both equally. I tend to use the 40 more in photo and the 28 when I am in a dense city or for filming TH-cam videos. That being said, I’d recommend the 40mm to most. Especially a newer photographer or a shyer photographer street photographer. More recently picked up the Q3 and 28mm has it’s challenges. A lot of zooming in with your feet and the 40 offers a better balance of not too wide but yet wide enough. A street photographer’s take. Cheers everyone!

    It's funny because I never was a 28 mm type of guy. With my Tamron 28-75 I found myself using the long end most of the time as it gives me this nice separation and allows very intimate shots - and I barely NEVER used the wide end. Now with my GRIIIX the 40 mm often feel too tight and I wished I picked the regular GRIII over the X 😅 Maybe it has to do with an other style of shooting and composing with this little bad boy 😅😊❤ still a very cool cam, maybe I have to get used to it

    My kids are 6, 3, and 3 months. Love my GR3 since, as you mentioned in your video, I'm always so close quarters with them. That wider focal length, closer minimum focus distance, and more depth of field are all big for me.
