    The ricoh shooting experience isn't non existent, it's just different. With the fujis, the experience is almost precious. You wander, slowly, smell the flowers, speak to the locals, see a shot, set a few dials, compose, say thank you, buy a flower, move on.
    With the ricoh, the experience is going unnoticed, like a silent assassin. Move, see a shot, stop, snap, move. The joystick isn't needed because you've already set the focus using snap focus. You are calculated. A few steps ahead. You left the house for the day with a plan and then you execute. Then you palm it or put it in your pocket and move on. Lol.

    Thanks for the video. I am using both Ricoh GR3 and GR3x, but never had the chance to experience the Fuji x100V, hence my intrerest. I noted some of your points that need a bit of corrections tough. 1. The Ricoh has the full touch screen functionality (AF postioning, AF actuation, and AF actuation + shutter release), hence the need for the joystick is irrelevant and the speed is actually much faster, than any joystick can provide. 2. "The Fuji is not pocketable due to its built-in tilt screen." No, the tilt screen is not extending its size at all. The Fuji is simply bigger, than most of the pockets. However, I do agree, the tilt screen is a competitive advantagious feature of the Fuji. 3. Picture profiles: Fuji has the edge for jpg shooters. For those many who wants retain the liberty to finalize the art piece in post, this is not a relevant feature at all. 4. Fuji's mobile connectivity feature is theoretical vs Ricoh actually works seemlessly. 5. Battery performance is obviously constrained in the Ricoh due to its compact form factor, but personally I never used up more than 2 batteries on a full day shooting after learning how to optimize its performance. I wonder if you only use the rare screen on the Fuji for composition and review shots, how long would it last. 6. I would have liked some image quality comparision. The Ricoh has an amazing quality lens that is quite unique as having a sweet spot at f2.8, yes wide open. Its bokeh quality is suprisingly good (being a 28mm FF eqv.) and its close up focusing is also stunning (up to 6cm). How does the Fuji compare? Based on the shots in your video, I find the Fuji shots just soft to me and also the bokeh is rather unpleasant, but I would not conclude on some holiday shots. 7. The Ricoh has a very usefull IBIS that helps low light photography a lot. I belive Fuji does not feature that. 8. Comparing the GR3 to your Canon Powershot shooting experience is simply an insult and clearly indicates that you have not nearly explored your Ricoh GR3 yet. Yes, the Fuji's retro controls are cool and also bring up some nostalgic feelings to me, but you have all those manual controls on the Ricoh as well. 9. Finally, I'd have mentioned some significant drawbacks of the Ricoh: due to its retracting lens meachnism, it is rather dust sensitive, which I believe the Fuji is completely free of. It can be addressed using various protection methods, but none works perfectly and some negatively impacts the pocketability of the camera. Also the Ricoh neither has a built in flash, nor a built in optical/electronic viewfinder which I can easily live with, but maybe a show stopper for some folks.

    I sold my X100V and I bought the GRiii and the GRiiix. I also have the wide lens for the GRiii and the telephoto lens for the GRiiix. Owning both Ricohs with their adaptive lenses makes it a great combo. Ricoh’s files are razor sharp. I love the fact that the Ricoh cameras are so compact and discreet. To me, image quality, camera size, portability, more focal length options (GRiii & GRiiix and their lenses) outweigh not having a viewfinder or mechanical dials. That is something I can live without. I also dislike the worm artifacts that Fuji files produce in LR. I have also owned the XT-20, XT-2, XT-3, XE-4 and now the XH-2. I’m really considering switching to Canon since Fuji lacks on autofocus speeds. Mind you, I originally started off shooting Sony (A6000,A72, A7R4) prior to jumping ships to Fuji.

    • @kikflip
      @kikflip 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The x100 also has wide and tele converters.
      Apart from the viewfinder, you get much better battery life, a flash, better video and weather sealing (to help avoid dust on the sensor).

    • @misterlove7034
      @misterlove7034 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@kikflip yes, you’re right. I forgot to mention that. In all reality, weather sealing is not important to me because no camera is really “weather sealed”. It’s weather resistant to a certain degree. I get around taking photos in the rain by using an inexpensive dry bag hack with my Ricoh. TH-cam has videos on this hack. Or simply using an umbrella to cover myself and the camera.
      As far as the lenses on the X100V, it makes the camera bulkier. To me, portability is very important and that’s another reason I gravitate towards the Ricoh. I was blown away by the photo quality of the Ricoh. As an owner of both cameras, I can safely say that the Ricoh blows Fuji files out of the water. That’s the reason I sold the X100V. It’s a nice looking camera, but I don’t think it’s worth the hype.
      I’m really looking forward to the new Ricoh camera that should be coming out soon. I hope they also make a monochrome version.

Yes, you guessed with the GR3 … I promised the XT4 and pleaded it was just a moment, it meant nothing, it was just a phase and it will pass … it never did … I couldn’t give up either I still love them both. They tolerate one another but sometimes, just sometimes, when I’m heading out to shoot … you can feel the tension … and sometimes, I’m convinced I hear a quiet whisper “… choose me” 😉 😊 ❤️ 📷

    Had both. Ricoh wins hands down for me and I'm a Fuji fan boy. Have the GFX, X100F, X-H2, X-T3. It wins for two reasons. really is pocketable and to be able to set the FN button to Auto Exposure is a game changer. You set everything in manual and when you move from a really bright scene to a dark one (or visa versa) and don't have time to set aperture, iso and shutter (as you may miss the shot). Simply press the FN button and it will adjust the shutter speed for the correct exposure. Also I prefer the 27-28mm focal length.

    I'm trying to decide between the GRiii and the x100v as well, I don't really consider myself a pro photographer and I have been taking photos with an iPhone only. That being said after watching this video, I may purchase the GRiii now since it's so small that it would make a great everyday camera I can take anywhere. I feel like for the Fuji, I would probably need a small camera bag or a fanny pack to carry it around which I may forget more often.

    It is worthy to mention that Ricoh’s distance priority focusing is incredibly useful for street photography. Other advantages of the Ricoh for street photography are how “unnoticeable” it is, as well as its wider field of view. Pictures taken with the Ricoh are also usually sharper than those taken with the X100v which is somewhat soft at wider apertures.

    I’m primarily a film shooter, but I’m a big fan of both the GR and X100 series. I’m pretty sure the focus point on the GRIII can be set by simply touching the screen just like on a smart phone, which would actually be faster than setting it with the joystick on the Fuji. I don’t have any experience with the GRIII, but I have an older GR, the camera can be pretty menu divey to get to the settings, but once you figure out how you like to use it, you can save those settings as the new default. It does have much better focus modes than the default mode shown. The Ricoh GR does take a lot of use to figure out. I imagine the X100 is more fun to use with the analog controls, that’s actually why I prefer my film cameras to the GR. I think both of these cameras are going to be future classics (I’m holding onto my GR for this reason and for the day I get priced out of shooting film.) The X100 photos are 🔥.

    I am a 35mm film shooter and I ended up snagging a x100v and I was immediately shocked at how good the imagery was...and how fun it was to make the recipes. One thing I personally ran into going from film to digital was...I was taking SO many photos. They were all good photos, I could instantly see them, and I found myself taking too many. I ended up selling the x100v to a friend only so I could stay in the moment more. After considering the 35mm film prices + processing...it keeps $35mm film at $1 shot and makes me shoot much less and stay in the moment. I know that's cheesy to say but that's the only reason I sold the x100v...I think it is a beast and probably one of the best if not the best compact digital camera for travel.

    Love my Ricoh GRiii. With recipes, you can get some lovely aesthetics. It is, as you say, a pocket camera and the process isn’t as engaging as other cameras with a viewfinder. I use my Olympus Em5iii for that though.
    For city breaks and family situations where your prime reason isn’t photography, i find it serves me as having a very high quality camera on me still. I use the centre focus point and recompose as on my 5D classic. Just works for me.

    As well as missing the touch focus, you also missed the Ricoh's snap focus feature - the ultimate fast focus. Maybe read the manual? Having used both, the Ricoh's focus speed and flexibility easily beats the Fuji. Neither have as fast low-light autofocus as a modern full frame mirrorless from, say, Sony or Nikon.

    A couple of things that I think are important to highlight in favor of the Ricoh are: Snap Focus and Stabilizer. They are also related to battery life. If you shoot with Snap Focus and remove stabilization, you will be extending the camera battery. Snap Focus allows fast shots using an old acquaintance: hyperfocal
    I don't find Fujifilm's application that repugnant, but it must be admitted that Ricoh's ability to transmit Raw and the speed at which it does so are impressive

    Maybe you should take the time to learn the functions of the Ricoh. You said you missed the joystick for focus, Ricoh has a touch focus system. Isn’t that easier and faster than a joystick?

    • @gravel.travel
      @gravel.travel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Personally I enjoy the joystick more and find it easier than the touch, especially bc the screen on the Ricoh doesn’t move. So for my style of photography, it is indeed not easier. But thanks for the comment!

  • @birdyw
    @birdyw 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    When you compare the shooting experience, I think you miss the real power of the Ricoh, it’s Snap focus shooting feature. It’s not just a point and shoot camera if you actually learn to use it. That feature is extensive in the Ricoh and it really why it is the king of Street photography. That require you to have a better understanding of the exposure triangle. Although the Fuji has the retro interface, but I think the Ricoh actually more retro for me in terms of thinking how to judge a scene and planned out the quick changing environment. In that regard, the Ricoh is brilliant.

    • @JackBurton-qp4hc
      @JackBurton-qp4hc 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the Fuji why wouldn't you just use a narrow aperture to get a lot of depth of field and pre-focus the lens to the desired distance? Isn't that the same thing as this much vaunted Snap Focus?

    • @birdyw
      @birdyw 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JackBurton-qp4hc yes, you can do that in a Fuji, the same idea. It also have a focus scale to show you the range. But that’s not as quick and sophisticated as the Ricoh way, with Ricoh snap focus, you can reset a few focus range, and you also can adjust your aperture to change the range very quickly, so when you’re in situations that require, you can switch quickly and take the shot with confidence. The Fuji way is more conventional, while it can do the same, but not exactly like in the past, the focusing ring on the Fuji is slow and it turn continuously without limit, so it’s not a favorable method.

    I own both. If I could only have one of the two, I would choose the Fuji X100v, but I can tell you right now that I use the Ricoh GRiii 98% of the time. Very rarely will I use the Fuji. Comparing Fuji vs Ricoh.
    Fuji x100v
    - more intuitive controls
    - more pleasing white balance (subjective)
    - more bokeh
    - 35mm equivalent is easier to use for most scenarios.
    - better video capability
    Ricoh GRiii
    - One-handed controls, Fuji can’t.
    - colors are more neutral, realistic, and natural feeling (subjective)
    - images are cleaner, sharper, with more detail all things being equal, better resolving power
    - 28mm equivalent is more flexible indoors and outdoors, you won’t be falling off cliffs trying to frame all
    - IN BODY IMAGE STABILIZATION is better than the extra stop without it.
    Why do I use the Ricoh GRiii more even though I think the Fuji is better overall?
    - IBIS for low light situations.
    - 28mm is more flexible. I can get closer, but I can’t always step further back. 28mm to 35mm isn’t that great a zoom.
    - Cleaner images. I’m sorry Fuji family, I’ve compared hundreds of images, the GRiii photos look cleaner, sharper.
    - Super pocketable and portable. It’s not inconvenient, and it is less eye catching.

    Ok so let's see if you read these comments ;)
    First thing: get an SD card dongle that connects directly to your phone - total game changer!
    Secondly: the very idea of shooting from the hip means shooting somewhat blind (tilt screens undermine that somewhat)
    Thirdly: I know when you made this video you only had the Ricoh for a little while but it in no way produces point & shoot only type images - it is a photographer's camera, and is enormously versatlie
    Fourth(ly?): While emulations & profiles help, if people are drawn to cameras for these, then they really need to learn how to edit!

    • @gravel.travel
      @gravel.travel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! We do read these comments! :) Thanks for checking out the video. As for your questions! 1. SD card dongle is a great idea to get over my Fuji app issues! 2. I see what you're saying, but having more time on Fuji I got used to the screen being pulled up and prefer that for composition. 3. I didn't mean ONLY point and shoot images, just thats the shooting experience as the form factor of the camera is exactly like a point and shoot, where as the Fuji is manual and more mechanical. 4. I've found I enjoy these cameras for the fact that I don't HAVE to edit the picture outside of the camera. It saves me a ton of time, considering I'm shooting on these for travel/memories/fun not professional shoots. In that case, of course I edit. Hope that helps clarify & thanks for the comment!

      "Fourth(ly?): While emulations & profiles help, if people are drawn to cameras for these, then they really need to learn how to edit!"
      What a condescending comment. I know how to edit and have been since my film SLR days editing scanned images. After decades doing these and then dSLR RAW files I grew tired of it and swapped to a Fuji for it's great jpeg output and custom recipes. I relish the challenge of getting images right in camera.
      I could be equally condescending and suggest that you should really know how to get results straight from camera and stop using post-processing as a crutch for your poor photography skills, but I will refrain from doing so...

    I had an earlier version of the Fuji and just didn’t bond with it. I have been using Ricohs since the earlier small sensor versions, And currently have the GRIII and the GRIIIx. I mostly shoot using snap-focus, which I think is one of the best features of the Ricohs. The autofocus, especially in low light is deficient. I keep the Ricoh in a pouch on my belt, and combined with snap-focus makes it a great camera to get shots quickly. Other advantages of the Fuji are that it has a viewfinder, and is apparently weather-resistent. In bright sunlight, the Ricoh screen can be hard to see. I do have external viewfinders for the Ricohs, but they are very expensive. The Ricoh is not my only travel camera. On my most recent trip to Mexico, I also took my Sony A7C along with 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm lenses. I only took the 35mm because I began my trip on a beach, and didn’t want to risk using the Ricoh where there was a chance of sand or salt-water damage. Otherwise I would just use my Ricoh in crop-mode. I needed the Sony because it is better at lowlight, and because 50mm is actually my preferred angle of view. The Sony with the old Zeiss-Sony 35mm F2.8 is pretty compact; not as compact as the Fuji, but close enough. I enjoyed your video, and appreciated the objectivity it displayed.

    I would chose the Sony A7III with the Sony 28mm f2 light easy and pure quality, If I want it lighter i'll just use my Iphone. The Ricoh is the perfect example of why people stop buying cameras and simply stick to their smartphones, and why the average user simply no longer cares about a point-and-shoot camera. The Fuji wins this round in all aspects. Once your lens is no longer interchangeable, there's also no need to replace your trusted smartphone with a point-and-shoot camera. And the retro look you're talking about is simply software-based, known as a picture profile.

    • @gravel.travel
      @gravel.travel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting points! I shoot Sony for video, but I'd never want that photo style for my travel photos. There is something about shooting on the Fuji and doing no edits, having the perfect image (in my opinion) and practically airdropping to my phone. It's the ease of 35mm film photography that I love, just of course, way simpler.
