I shoot the 243, 6.5 CM, 7-08, and 308. In that lineup, the 6.5 brings absolutely nothing to the table for this hunter.

Agree the .243 is excellent. I’ve both. The 6.5 is a good all arounder. Good at everything but great at nothing. If I could only have 1 rifle and didn’t hunt elk or collect pelts, the 6.5 is a good choice. It offers a bit more oomph than the .243.
If I could have 2 rifles total, I may choose the .243 or 22-250 and something more potent like a 300 win mag or 7 mag.
End of the day - use what you shoot well and are willing to train with. Both reliably get the job done for anything deer or smaller

I’m one of those people who has a middle opinion of the 6.5 Creedmoor. It’s fine for what it is… For me though, being prior military, defeating armor is a small consideration…. Maybe I won’t ever need it, which is fine… but the 6.5 Creedmoor has no chance against level IV plates. The lighter weight 6mm, especially the copper solids have a significant chance. Better to have it and not need it.

As another vet, I get where you are coming from, but in the consideration between tactical and hunting, I try to keep a distinct attitude about them. I am actually going to do a video talking about that shortly.

Both are good for up to deer sized game but no larger.

    243 for life !
I have rifles chambered in both cartridges and I will ALWAYS take the 243 over the 6.5 CM.
If I'm hunting elk I just take my 300 or 338 winmag. 6.5 CM is nothing special.
Even the newer 6 mm Creedmoor is no better in ballistics than the 243win.

I wouldn't use my 6.5 Creedmoor for Elk. I have better options, 7 rem mag, 30 06, 270 ,7mm08. That being said I have seen a 400 class bull taken with a 6.5 Creedmoor at 300 yards. Hushin TV is a guiding channel on TH-cam. His 15 year old daughter, Brailee, shot this bull at 300 yards. It was a great shot, the Elk tipped over in a few seconds after doing a 5 yard circle. Using a 143 grain ELD X at 300 yards it carries more than enough energy to kill an Elk. I think we should probably practice enough to shoot as well as 15 year old Brailee and use common sense to determine reasonable distances oriented to the cartridge. That said, the 243 and 6.5 are great deer cartridges at distances I would shoot, 400 yards and under.

6.5mm allows for bullets from 90ish grains up to 160 grains. The Swedes have been using the 6.5x55 since the 1890's to hunt everything, which happens to include brown bears and moose. IIRC the 6.5 Creedmoor is ballistically similar to the 6.5x55. In the US the most commonly hunted game is deer sized and for that size game 140 grain bullets are fine.
When we compare cartridges to see what is better we are often picking at nits. Is the 243 better than the 6.5CM? In some aspects it certainly is. In my never to be humble opinion its a toss up. Pick what rifle you like and shoot it more than you think you need too. Learn that rifle and that cartridge. Shoot from field positions and not just from a bench. There is no magical cartridge, rifle, or scope that can replace your proficiency.

The 6 CM is almost ballistically identical to the .243 out to 500 yards but because it uses the same fast twist rifling as the 6.5 CM it stabilizes the heavier bullets it has less drop and drift than the .243 at those ranges. Now the 6.5 PRC is the 6.5 CM in steroids. It has a 200 ft per sec advantage and corresponding increase in energy over the CM shooting the same bullets. Many like it even better than the CM for game like Elk.

Ñot just like a creed Moore, why all the hate&Hipe there are heavyer bullets see the swid., who buys a creed to varmint hunt with? Why not throw the 260 in to the mix, I don't know why it can't be excepted for what it really is? A well rounded medium game round, the real Hipe is it's accurate and shoot ability, excellent bullet selection, my 30-06 shots as flat as my creed but the creed is more pleasant to shot, I hear more guys bitching about what it won't do than than what it does best, I've had my mld 70 extrem weather for 3 seasons, 5 deer ,one at 452yrds., 1\2moa @400 yards, most accurate & pleasant rifle in my battery, didn't buy it to helk hunt with , next time conpare your 243 to the 260-or the 6\55, if it wasn't for the creed I dont know what you guys would write about just my 2 cents

Great points! The more I shoot it, the more I like it. It is a fantastic option, but as my paw paw told me, everyone has an opinion. I plan to do a follow up o. This as the 6mm Creedmoor is a better match to the 243 over the 6.5.
