  • Inverness is underrated. Well, it WAS by us. Not anymore. Join us on the morning after the night before for a refreshing walk sandwiched between one of the best breakfasts we've ever had and a hearty pub lunch. Will we feel any better by the end of it? Only one way to find out, enjoy the video...
Filmed on Thursday 7th April 2024

This video is not sponsored and all opinions are my own
I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

18:10 That's a place known as 'Ship Space' - closed since the death of the owner (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ShipSpace). The four-funnel ship is a 1:10 scale model of the Titanic.

Go for a pub crawl in Inverness! 🤗
Of course not! But: I was working as delivery driver for a medical supplies distributor here in the Cologne-Bonn area. Among my customers were many families with members who were terminally ill. With some, I had the opportunity to have a word in four eyes and would always tell them that, when the inevitable had happened, they should go on a vacation. Just to break up their daily habits and expectations. The ones I met again later confirmed that was a good thing to do.
There's one much overlooked very benign if not sobering fact to coping with the loss of a loved one: Much of the coping is getting used to the new situation. A break from the stream of daily routines and sights is a great help there, and a holiday is a great break.
How I know? Last survivor of a family here. Done my share of grieving.
You win no points for days spent in grief, you deserve a good time and you know your hubby would have said that, too. So do something to help yourself make things easier and brighter for you!
All the bestest to you! 🤗

A fitting tribute to the guy who obviously spent so much time and care building it.

The Great Glen is as you say a fault in the earth. However it does not divide the highlands from the lowlands. That is a fault running from Aberdeen north of Glasgow, through Loch Lomond, the Highland fault. Your trip on the Great Glen canal is not as easy as a narrow canal. There are large bodies of water with weather similar to what you experienced by the Firth. ! caution.

The thing with Inverness, is the city centre is a bit rundown & depressing, but if you get just a wee bit out then it's got some awfully pretty spots. The canal walk is braw in particular, & if you can be bothered going all the way up to Craig Phadraig it's a great day out up to an old Pictish hill fort site
That last bridge from the Ness Islands used to be quite a popular spot on the rare hot summers day for kids jumping off into the river. Well, they did 25 years ago, not sure I'd fancy it myself, Ness isn't exactly the deepest of rivers...

That brought back some fond memories. Bought a brand new home there (well picked the land plot and standard house design) in 1998 on the hill above the exit of the canal called Scorguie. The castle in my day was the police station. The building off front your hotel on the left was just built and was a large Templeton's supermarket. I bought my kilt to left your hotel across the road and about 5 shops down on the south bank. Later in life 1987 I loaded my small 27 foot motor cruiser into the canal and made my way past Fort William and out into the Clyde. Fond memories. Maybe not of the late night trips to station for my weekly commute to Edinburgh. Mind you the dining car back to Inverness was very nice.

The city only has a population of about 50,000 and is largely only a tourist stopping-off point because it is the only sizeable conurbation in the Highlands and Islands. I reckon your walk encompassed most of what Inverness has to offer. The only places you didn't visit that come to mind are the Botanic Gardens (perhaps not at their greatest in April but they are free), Leaky's second-hand bookshop and Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Obviously the scenery in the surrounding area is magnificent and Inverness provides a base for day trips to such places as the Cairngorms, Culloden, the Black Isle, Kyle of Lochalsh and Glen Affric.

its pronounced yoata canal, the G is like a Y and the Ö is like oa sort of, we live just down the road from this canal which goes between Trollhatten (where SAAB was) and a very large lake called Vänersborg. :)

Thanks Steve, Alicia and Mia. That was a lovely video that brought back so many memories to me. I used to live near Forres and worked in Inverness one day a week. It would make a great video or series of videos if you hired a boat and did the journey through the Caledonian Canal. Don’t worry about the weather though, I was always told “If you don’t want to do it in the rain don’t do it in Scotland!

That ship model has 4 stacks. The only 4-stack historical ships that would deserve such a model would be, Titanic, Britannic, and Olympic. Immediately upon first looking, Titanic came to mind.

I’m watching it from this point on, but I’m stoked to see what the rest of the video holds haha.
No better way to end the video than with some ice cream!
Love you both! Tell Alicia I love seeing her wear that good clean Buckeye toboggan when she does.
Steve every weekend my friend and I watch your weeks videos. I love you dude and I pray for your good health and that you both are safe, happy, and healthy.

Caley Cruises are very good. Did a long weekend in one of their cruisers last year, very enjoyable. Slow pace of life, lots of places to stop, admire the view, have a drink/eat. We made it as far as Laggan Locks before turning back. Eagle Barge is worth a visit at Laggan Locks, good beer, good food, good company.

Must say, re: TV at the The Innes, it's almost obscene the way that the Bigot Brothers, Rangers/Celtic, get so much support all over Scotland, at the expense of home town clubs. Inverness Caledonian were relegated today. Thanks for video, that breakfast at the Castle View guesthouse looked absolutely wonderful.
