  • I had one day in Penzance and there was only ever going to be one way to spend it - join me onboard the Scillonian III as we set sail the the islands beyond Land's End - The Isles of Scilly. Is it worth it for a day trip? Is this the best way to get there and back again? I'll do my best to answer both those questions while giving you a wee look around, onboard and on shore...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

    FAQs:
    WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
    WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
    WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
    WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
    WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
    CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
    DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for TH-cam Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Thanks Steve. I used to live on St Martin's Isles of Scilly and had to leave when I was 24in 1987 . I was going to marry a girl who lived on the island but I couldn't find anywhere to make a living and all the properties were sold to rich people from London. Being on Scillonian money is being on your arse in those days . Unless you can have an income from renting to tourists. The cheapest property in 1985 was about £85000 and that was with a short 20 year lease. Nobody owns a house on St Martin's there all Charlie / William's now . I didn't stay with my fiancee as she needed to help her father there .Now she lives near Portsmouth so I hear . I moved to South Wales near the sea and met a Welsh lady . I miss the islands and now I'm 60 and retired I will make it a point next year to take a trip . Thanks for bringing back memories 👍 Anyway i sailed on Scillonian 3 a month after she started service. She was made 17th May 1977 and i was only 14 at the time.

You have my sympathies I had friends on St Marys they built their own place at the beginning of the 60's I was told it was worth £1.4 m but prices dropped when the helicopter service ended in 2010, I have to agree Charlie/Willy are very poor landlords you will know the details I imagine, from memory only Hugh Town is freehold.

I went on this trip two days ago. I saw an advert in a farmers field when travelling from St. Erth to St. Ives. I had been planning to take a boat trip to Seal Island in St. Ives for £25 per head. When I saw that I could get a day trip to the Scilly Isles - for not much more - I jumped at the chance (£35 only certain days though). I also discovered that you can hire bikes at St. Mary's Bike hire for only £11 per 1/2 day - I was only there for 3 hours so perfect. I rented a bike and cycled around the whole island. It was bliss.
I watched this video before taking the trip so I knew exactly what to expect. Thanks, much appreciated.

Hello. I sailed to Scilly in 1968. The weather was ghastly and I was seasick for the only time in my life. I’ve just watched your delightful video, Steve. A lovely calm sea. But do you know, I started to feel seasick again after over 50 years!! Can’t believe it!

I'm a ferry fanatic. Can't imagine flying somewhere when there is a boat ride available. To me, the boat ride is part of the destination. Being retired from the U S Coast Guard may have something to do with it.

My wife and I had a wonderful holiday on Scilly 50+ years ago - it's quite amazing how little it has changed. In a day you could only see St Mary's, but you packed a lot in. The other islands are equally memorable. It is paradise in good weather, but a trip on Scillonian in a gale or on a heavy sea would also leave a lifelong memory. Brilliant piece, many thanks.

Rather earlier, when I was down that way, 'Scillonian' plied her trade for 25s. a head, for what could be a pretty rough 5 hr voyage.
For the well heeled, the trip by air taking 20 minutes, cost 2 guineas!

Great to see this old ship still going strong! When I was a toddler, my parents took me on a vacation to the Scillies. The horn of the ship must have made an impression on me, because back home I would occasionally let out a loud hoooonk and my dad would answer with "Scillonian three!".

All the islands are unique and have their own atmosphere. St Mary’s quintessential English. Bryher, rugged and rough, Tresco is beguiling and lush, St Martin’s with its silver white sands very tropical. St Agnes is almost Cornish and has Gugh attached at low tide.
The islands are very bewitching and not forgetting the Sunset over Sampson. Magical

Sailed on the Scillonian II for a day trip back in 1962, (I was only 10!). Managed to squeeze in a trip to Tresco and the fabulous gardens. In 1985 I (now married!) returned for a week's holiday based in accommodation at the famous Kavorna Bakery, Hugh Town, St. Mary's. This time sailing, as you did, Steve, on Scillonian III which was running all those years ago.
Fascinating trips to several of the off Islands during the week, including dipping in a very cold May sea off St Martin's. It seems that Vic's tours round St. Mary's on the vintage bus may no longer be there, because otherwise you would have been on it!
Great video Steve, with a bit of nostalgia for us. Plenty more for you to discover on your next visit!

Another lovely vid, Steve. Thank you as always. Scillonian III reminds me of The Earl of Zetland, the ship that used to ply between the different islands of Shetland, carrying passengers and goods (not containerised, though) for the islands. I managed one trip on the Earl in the early 1970s. I've only managed one trip to the Isles of Scilly and that was by helicopter to visit the island of Tresco. Amazingly beautiful place altogether. Oh, and I recommend you visit St Michael's Mount - a fascinating place.

Still remember Scillonian II which was much less stable in rough weatherand thinking how amazing Scillonian III was by contrast. I was around 10 when I first travelled on the ship - now I'm 55. Very good effort and well done for maintaining this ship for so long. Real beauty. 🛳️👏

Yes the Isles of silly are part of Cornwall.
Owned by the duchy of Cornwall king Charles and the The Dorrien-Smith family on Tesco.
I grew up on the Isles of Scilly on st Mary's where my father was the dentist for more than 25 years- Barrie Fairest 1.
He was also in charge of the fire brigade on the island as well.
I'm glad that you got to see these beautiful Islands, however, to appreciate these beautiful Islands in all their glory you need to spend at least 7 days there.
If you want a good pint and good food if you ever visit the islands again, I can recommend the Mermaid pub just on the left-hand side as you turn into hugh town off the Quay from the scillonian.
It's good to see that you took a good long walk to old town add to the garrison with the famous castle.
Hope you had a really good day my friend.
    Safe travels my friend 🙏

Outstanding! Beginning with the beautiful crossing over to the Scilly Isles on this marvelous Ship...& beyond! The Scillian III is so elegant & is a truly lovely Ship! I just love the beautiful, classic older vessels! They are definitely the most charming & delightful! Then, disembarking on the Scilly Isles! Unbelievable! This is the coolest place I have ever seen! Seeing the charming & quaint English style Cottages, Homes & Buildings. Yet surrounded by tropical plants & palm trees! That makes it even more captivating & truly unique! Incredible! I just loved it there! It has such a wonderful ambience too! I would love to stay there! Maybe, even, in the Castle Hotel up on the hill there? The "Castle' is so beautiful & has such a stunning view.
Alongside that, 'twould be an absolute must for me to have one of those Steak Pasties you had for lunch. I really love Pasties(one of my all time favorites), & that Pastie looked especially delicious! Yum! "Twas making my mouth water just watching you eat it! Especially, since I was eating a Peanut Butter sandwich at the time! LOL. Beyond that, I also loved the various interesting boats that you saw on the 'voyage,' both sailing to Scilly, & on your Return. Then, to top it all off, 'twas seeing the friendly Canoe 'escort' you had there on the return 'voyage.' Sweet! What more could we ask for? Indeed! Not a thing!! Well, maybe just one of those delicious Pasties! LOL.Thank you for sharing this truly unique & delightful experience!

During the transition from sail to steam, in the 19th Century, it was mail packets that made early steamships viable. Of course this is younger (built 1977) but still a wonderful old ship. I’ve always fancied a trip to the Scilly Isles. I reckon they would suit me down to the ground. Ship fanatics can get some more information about Scillonian III at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMV_Scillonian_III

Surely one of the highlights of Britain! There used to be a saying, if you visit the islands for a day you will never return but if you stayed for a holiday you will never leave. The first visit I went by British Alrways helicopter from Penzance and had more time for a day trip so went to the gardens on Tresco. The boat trips to the off islands are the best part of a holiday, loved St Agnes and a trip out to the Bishop Rock lighthouse when it still had resident keepers.Good video as ever Steve.
