    How would a high level Taekwondo fighter do in full contact kickboxing? A Korean National Champion stepped up to the challenge in what was the biggest international arena for striking - his name, Yong Soo Park. After 3 wins against C-level kickboxers at heavyweight, he'd fight Kaoklai Kaennorsing, a former Muay Thai Champion weighing 172 pounds. This stylistic and "David vs. Goliath" matchup sparked huge debates in the fight community.
    I am a striking analyst that's so far focused on breaking down combat sports. I've been fortunate enough to have major fight camps, legends, and elite martial artists give testimonials to my work - www.lawrencekenshin.com/testim... Kaoklai is a bloody LEGEND!!

    The TKD fighter was using all his skills whereas the thai boxer had to restrain himself and not throw elbows to the head. If elbows were allowed Kaoklai would have won in the 1st round I think.

      Just because you can break a board once doesnt mean anything, I did Taekwon doe and you dont practice breaking boards with elbows constantly, Muay Thai fighters CONDITION there elbows. Its a difference of just doing it once and constantly doing it

      MT practioners in Thailand are hardened endurance beasts, they train basically all day, everyday.
      They have some weaknesses however, usually their front is not as guarded as in other fist-fighting styles, and they dont have any defense against grappling/Wrestling, but this is no wonder, since these are not allowed XD

      I have lived the better part of this decade in the far East and while I have tremendous respect for their cultures and achievements and highly functional and safe societies they are among the worst in the world when it comes to racism. I mean black = bad, white = good, no questions asked. They are very much hung up in their own stereotyping and it is to their own detriment if they don't open up to the new realities. That doesn't mean they have to go bonkers about forced diversity like EU and US have. Just maybe a bit like we were 50yrs ago would already be enough.

    Joe Rogan has the best take on TKD as an effective martial art. As a legitimate black belt and competitor he was very successful in TKD, but once he made the transition over into kickboxing he was getting destroyed by training partners and realized there were all these gaping holes in TKD. Highly recommend watching that video.

    This is why I love Muay Thai !!!! The timing is stellar and the sudden but extremely dangerous nature of the leg kicks and overall kicks , grappling and striking.I also love the aggressiveness of the combos and swagger of the strikes. I started out with Tae Kwon Do as a kid . Then many different forms of Kung Fu. No matter what style I implement in a exchange I feel Thai Boxing is so practical for a street confrontation or match fight. Me being a smaller guy I always had to beat up bigger opponents. Being able to anticipate your opponents strikes and spot patterns early in a bout comes with practice and training but is ultimately the fundamental key coupled with good grappling to gain a upper hand against a bigger opponent. Bobbing and weaving works very well in Muy Thai Styles with the clinch systems put in place and block system to defend tons of damage and sling your often bigger opponent like a pit bull would do on a bigger dog in a fight .
    Long Live Sagat!!! Tiger Uppercut

I really believe your videos could draw a lot of people into this whole world. When we understand what we are seeing and the thought and talent that it requires, we can't help but appreciate and enjoy the arts so much more. Same goes for music, film, and especially MMA. Park hasn't adapted his TKD for kull contact kickboxing. When you see a successful TKD guy in MMA/Kickboxing like Anthony Pettis, they adapt their TKD techniques and work them into a viable/complete MMA/Muay thai arsenal.

    • @MykTheOccultist
      @MykTheOccultist 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Rod Ramsalot you could argue that all of pettis's flashy spinning handstand shit does not work in combat, yet he makes it work.
      his base is TKD and you can see it in his kicking technique. same with machida, thompson, nelson, you can see their karate bases in their striking and movement.
      you obviously have very little understanding of martial arts.

    • @Barracuda487
      @Barracuda487 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Rod Ramsalot No dude, Anthony may use Muay Thai kick's but his kicking techniques are very TKD essence because of his crazy flexibility speed and very unorthodox style of kicking. How many mma fighters you see can kick like Pettis, yet alone run off the side of a fucking cage wall and kick some one in the face....none. All those crazy kicks he dose is because of his TKD background you moron.

    I remember watching this and as a TKD practitioner I was going for Park whatshisname. He was having success with countering his opponents low kicks with a quick jab before his opponent landed the kick. Bare in mind this was a tkd fighter, fighting kickboxing rules so he was up against it, even if his opponent was smaller. I believe muay thai to be a more 'efficient' fighting style than TKD, I think the kickboxers strikes are more telegraphed than TKD kickers but that probably comes with the power kickboxers put into their strikes where TKD focuses on speedy point scoring kicks. Great breakdown though and I like the way you treat all martial arts with respect. No martial art is 'better' than the next, it all comes down to attitude of the instructor and their students. :)

    • @ColorCodeWhite
      @ColorCodeWhite 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Brad Hutchinson the traditional TKD was not always the fast-scoring kicks, as it used to include deadly hand-to-hand combat and just as deadly kicks to go with it, but it is true that over time, commercialization sort of "changed" the overview of what TKD was actually meant to be more.....For show, i suppose.

    • @as1anam3r1can6
      @as1anam3r1can6 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I've always loved Muay Thai, but I think people are too quick to put tkd down as ineffective. I think it has less to do with the style and more to do with the person. As far as telegraphed, it all depends on how you set up a kick or a knee. Time it just right and your opponent will never see it coming

      Yea you are right in saying that.Unfortunately the way WTF rules are structured it makes for an uninteresting spectacle when watching the worlds best TKD fighters in a match. If they changed the rules to reward aggression and attack and removed the padding it would gain more respect from other martial artists.

    • @ColorCodeWhite
      @ColorCodeWhite 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brad Hutchinson (speaking from experience, i've been practicing traditional AND unorthodox TKD for about 8 years now) the padding actually REALLY slows me down. i lose about 50% speed and mobility as well as losing stamina a whole lot faster, for some reason.

      can you blame them? the saddest part with TKD, it's a really cool style but as far as striking with your hands, it's horrendous. Bald guy had poor guard and when it came time to use his hands, he was really sloppy. was almost like swinging noodle arms that just kept wrapping around his enemies by accident. just awful

    In karate we teach use kicks above the belt for tournament and below the belt for self-defence. Was smart for Park's to use low-kicks when it is allowed, but it is not revolutionary, is pretty much fundamental to karate so I imagine must be same for how taekwondo is taught. Awesome video too though by the way.

    As a bystandar who has practiced neither of these styles, I can say that both can make the average human go to the emergency room or worse. Do not bash one or the other like you are some king for being born into a specific ethnicity. Both fighters dedicated years of their lives to perfect their craft. Give both of them and their peoples the respect they deserve. No person is "superior." Fighting styles? Sure, the practitioner of TKD was fairly defeated. But one entire country of peoples being superior to another because of this fight? Give me a bloody break.
    Be proud of your country and heritage, no problem. But do not insult another country and it's culture just because of two men fighting on television. That is not only poor sportsmanship, but also extremely insulting to equate an entire country's worth to one of it's martial arts.
    Sorry for the negative call out, but it makes me cringe seeing so many of these kind of comments. People talking down on the entirety of China, India, The UK, Japan, Brazil, The Philippines, etc. It is absolutely upsurd.

    Power output, they’re about the same if you received a kick from either one. Technique wise, TKD doesn’t stand a chance. If they integrated TKD with hapkido, then maybe? But TKD alone, no way. I love TKD, I do, but when it comes to fighting other types of arts, it’s very difficult to stay pure in the sense of not bringing in other known styles. It’s a very limiting martial art. I’ve tried it against a friend who knows capoeira. It wasn’t that bad, but boy did I go down vs the one who knows Muay Thai.

    Lawrence Kenshin I was one of the first, if not the first channel to upload Park's fights. I have to say, you present a very skewed picture of Park Yong Soo's fights and you use a lot of unsubstantiated background info on Park / opponents in this video.
    1. Where do you get this "C-level" kickboxer claims. What do you mean by C-level. You make it sound like this was some actual K-1 classification. These were crappy undercard fights, not fixes.
    Also, so TKD guys don't know how to low kick just cuz they aren't allowed in Olympic rules? That's what you make it sound like. Should we also exclusively assign spin (wheel) kicks, back kicks, butterfly (360) roundhouse kicks, double kicks (i.e. low-high double roundhouse kick thrown by Shogun), etc. as TKD techniques? This is silly trying to label everything and implying that he won his first fight using a non-TKD technique.
    2. Where do you get off insinuating the Daisuke Watanabe fight was thrown? Each knockdown looked like Park clipped Daisuke clean to me.
    3. Third fighter is Paul Lungruff from a South African K-1 rules event.
    4. Where do you get that Park Yong Soo was a "champ"? At what? What I know from the information that used to be listed on the old K-1 website was that he competed in COLLEGE. He won a COLLEGE title.
    The reality of it is, Park was/is an overweight, out of shape fighter, easily winded, and happened to have an amateur TKD base that gave lesser competition trouble. He eventually transitioned to training at Khan gym with Sinbi Taewoong in Thailand. Never had the chops to be successful at a high level in K-1.
    Don't make this about TKD. Don't claim this is "champion vs. champion." Very misleading.
    5. Kaoklai fought Yongsoo in a "Khan" event, which was basically like a K-1 GP satellite qualifier event held in Korea. This wasn't some typical K-1 freak show fight, Kaoklai tried to qualify through the Khan event.
    I've been following your work since you first started doing MMA/Kickboxing breakdowns and analysis. Please lay off the TKD bashing. Many actual high level TKD based athletes have transitioned to kickboxing and MMA waaaay more successfully. Anderson Silva and Anthony Pettis being the most prominent and outspoken about it.
    You have previously claimed to have been a "junior olympics" medalist in TKD like that somehow contributes to your objectivity. From what I remember, anyone who wanted to could go compete at TKD junior olympics. You basically got medals for showing up. This alone doesn't give you insight or knowledge into high level TKD game.
    Just lay off the style bashing. If a TKD fighter goes into a kickboxing fight and doesn't know how to throw a punch, the TKD fighter is an idiot. If a boxer enters an Olympic-rules TKD tournament and doesn't know how to kick, the boxer is an idiot.

    • @LawrenceKenshin
      @LawrenceKenshin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      K186
      1. C-level as in I would not categorize them as above average kickboxers (B-Level) or elite (A-Level)
      Yes, TKD stylists don't know how to low kick really but they can certainly learn. Shogun is an MMA guy that specializes in MT, he learns many things. It's important to point out that olympic style TKD guys don't practice low-kicks. It's not something that can just be done easily. Good for YSP to pull it off.
      2. The strikes look odd to me. It may or may not be thrown, but my judgement is that it looks suspect. I have no bias against YSP or TKD, in fact I was cheering for him when he got into K-1.
      3. I know it was Paul Lungruff but there is very little to no information on said fighter.
      4. Collegiate titles are not world championship or olympic titles but they're still titles, he is still a champion. Not a title comparable to Rajadamnern, so he was no where near the best representative. Reps such as Moon Dae Sung or Kim-JeGyoung would've done so much better and inspired so much more people. Yet YSP was probably the only and best representative to go into K-1. It is about TKD. Not the best representation but he is a representative, just as Kaoklai wanted to rep his art and style too.
      5. Kaoklai fighting any heavyweight is a freak show fight, not just YSP. I don't plan on bashing TKD, or see this as such, but you seem to take it as bashing. I also plan on highlighting TKD's advantages and transitions. Anthony Pettis and Anderson Silva both have a rounded MT/KB/Boxing arsenal as well. Again these are MMA fighters, not so much "pure stylists" representing their arts. Crediting something being useful is not the same as being a relatively "pure stylist."
      I did not claim to be a jr olympics medalist. Pull it up for me. There's no need for personal attacks. I trained with the JR worlds team of my country at one point, with guest coaches often being from national teams of their respective countries, who were training partners to the likes of Chu Mu Yen and Yousef Karami. Most of the team was making the transition into the seniors within 1-2 years. But that is relatively irrelevant, even without any TKD experience, I will come to the same conclusion.
      I'm not style bashing, but I am laying out the limitations that YSP showed in his TKD, and in general what limitations TKD will encounter.
      The intention is not to make people think Taekwondo is useless, far from it, it's to make people realize the limitations, which imo is far from bashing. I'm calling it as I see it, to the best of my ability with the technical knowledge that I have and the observations I made. If you continue to feel that it's not fair or you can provide a better insight, I am open to learning & receiving constructive criticism,

    • @K186
      @K186 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Lawrence Kenshin Fair enough. I really didn't mean for the post to be as critical of you personally as it ended up being. The JR comment was one you probably made on r/mma.
      I apologize to the extent of that I attacking your personal background with TKD, but I stand by my criticisms of this particular video being biased. I just do not agree with this particular breakdown, the particular tilt it was presented with, nor the two fighters you chose as examples.
      Keep up the good work though. You're willing (and brave enough) to put in the work and put yourself out there with your analyses. Some are spot-on, while with others reasonable people can disagree.

    • @LawrenceKenshin
      @LawrenceKenshin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      K186 I assure that I never said junior olympics and I have not deleted any such comment on r/mma or elsewhere :).
      I wish that there was a way better example of olympic style TKD in K-1, however there isn't. To be fair, YSP landed a series of strikes and did better in many situations where B / A class fighters such as Alexey and Mighty Mo failed. A higher level TKD guy would've likely beat Kaoklai, though against a guy like Le Banner the odds are no good. YSP did land a few clean kicks before Le Banner cut off the ring and unleashed his power though, so again I would've loved to see a truly elite TKD guy try.
      There are a few TKD guys I think are important to feature, Steve Vick is one, which I've been planning to for a long time. Another is James Moontasri, silver medalist in Pam Ams & training partner to Anderson Silva and has done quite well in MMA.
      I can certainly understand disagreements, and I am far from infallible, but I do my best. The other analysts and I can disagree on some aspects, but in the end we are still open to change opinion and learn. This breakdown was not to bash TKD as it was at identifying a purist's limitations and then further investigate / set up how adaptations lead to certain tremendous successes and advantages.
      I'm surprised you didn't mention McGregor up there as he is also an MMA fighter practicing a lot of TKD lately.

    i don't understand how TKD fanboys can still talk to loudly about how its "effective"
    a 172 lbs muay thai fighter half the size just completely outclassed a olympic level HEAVYWEIGHT tae kwon do fighter
    the habits you form in tae kwon do like keepings your hands at your waist for balance and blocking makes tae kwon do completely useless against any striking art where you're allowed to punch someone in the face (most martial arts allow this)
    on the other hand if you're a TKD based mma fighter, learning to sprawl on takedowns is also more natural due to the hands at the waist...but it opens you up to a barrage of fists if the sprawl was a feint
    the conclusion is that tae kwon do is fucking useless, don't make your children take it, let them learn something that they could actually use to protect themselves and the people around them, let them learn some MUAY THAI

    • @SSC604
      @SSC604 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      its not useless i did try to mention one of the good things about tkd, low hands, easy sprawls
      ill even add another, the way you throw roundhouses in TKD are often hard to read. there's rarely any "tell" before the kick
      the snap motion thrown from the knee instead of muay thai's straight leg off the hip comes out way quicker, minimal power loss, hard to read...
      but at the end of the day it requires the biggest "NO-NO" in fighting, hands down for balance, the whip motion roundhouse throws you way off balance because your shin ends up acting like a pendulum, too much momentum
      i took TKD for over 10+ years, took one "trial" muay thai class and thought i was hot shit and wanted to spar someone cause i would wreck people in TKD, pretty much got KO'd by light jabs and couldn't walk properly for couple days from 3 big legs kicks
      signed up for some muay thai and i haven't looked back since, its mind blowing how big of a difference it is
      ps - the first guy i sparred was 17 or 18, i was about 26 at the time lol

      Exactly that. People got hooked on those old school martial arts movies. Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li....they all did flashy ass shit.
      Kicking being the main draw to "flashy" martial arts instantly pulls these ignorant dummies into a TKD gym. Years of dedication just to be punked by a couple months of muay thai training...SIGH

      +Bruce Lee is an actor make a living on facial a mean expression, but Muay Thai fighter is no facial expression just want all opponents have a good (senseless) sleep. Good night. They are not actors. No comparision please.

      that is utter bullshit. do you have ANY full contact experience in any capacity? Styles are better than others, the UFC has proven that if you have no grappling background youre fucked, and if you train striking it better be Boxing, Muay Thai, etc and not some dogshit traditional martial arts.
