    Roufus is someone I've been friends with for some time now, showed his heart. Changpuek is someone I have only briefly met, but is a seemingly humble guy. One thing we need to remember is the fight was NOT a Muay Thai fight. (No clinch, knees, throws, or elbows. Just leg kicks) Changpuek also showed great heart and sportsmanship. He could have went to the head with any kick after the second round but was told not to. This was a time of no TH-cam internet etc. The take away is both men showed what they are made of. I also commend Jeff "AKA Duke" for retracting his post fight statements and embracing the art of Muay Thai.

    The Muay Thai boxers fight plan was simple.
    Focus on attacking their American opponents legs. If your legs are injured, you cannot continue fighting as you can no.longer stand up. The American kick boxing champs had no answer to those hard kicks to the legs and thighs which hurt so bad that as one American kick boxer describes it :"your eyes feels like popping out every time you got hit by those low kicks".
    That was how the Muay Thai boxers wore down their American opponents.

      no you are absolutely wrong, he have way more dangerous techniqe but the only move allowed is low kick, its not really a tactic, its more like the rules crippled 90% of his muaythai, what else can he do, its not even a muaythai to be honest, its only muaythai low kick but he still won, you can only call it a muaythai martial art if you can use all the techniqe, but this is only low kick and to call it a muaythai is so wrong and disrespectful, bcause muaythai is not only martial art, its a important piece of their tradition

    Damn so none of the americans ever fought a bout with low kicks allowed.. Did they at least have some lowkick experience/training? Up to a point I think experience plays a big part in being able to ''take'' lowkicks. I remember walking like a cripple and being sore for days when I first started training and that was only from sparring (with shin pads) lol. I can't imagine what it must be like to take your first real lowkick, in full force, from a world class thai fighter. Must'v been terrifying.. it really is amazing that they managed to stay on their feet for so long. Those were some tough dudes for sure..
    btw funny how urquidez mentions that he tried to block a lowkick with his hands. I think like 99% of all fighters instinctively try that when they start messing around with legkicks for the first time (me included haha)
    great vid as always

      Yeah if i remember long ago. I remember certain kicks below the body was not allowed. But it also didn't help that because of those rules, some places that taught kick boxing, totally never taught barely to no low kicks. Because it could not be used in most tournaments back then, especially in U.S. But i am glad these fighters from other countries got to fight. Slowly Mixed martial arts was generating over time.

    I spent some time in Thailand years ago,and I am a huge fight fan,and former fighter.I spent many nights at this large bar in Pataya watching fight after fight.The fights went on every night,with the weekends getting the best fighters.The fights were brutal my any standard.Often the referee would lift the guy up off the canvas when he was dropped so the fight would go on.The sad part was that at the end of each bout,the winner would walk with a cup to the seated customers asking for money,but the loser just went home without being allowed to ask for money.

    • @samsun01
      @samsun01 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      if you watch Shaolin Monks do their "kung fu stances", some of their stances informs you that wrestling take-downs are useless to them in a 'real fight'. Shaolin monks and their horse stances, they can go really low to the ground and still very very balanced. The rock grounds where they train are deformed. You can see how hard they stomp so if you think a 'karate chop' is lethal, imagine the "shaolin feet" which to anyone with common sense will realize how much tougher a feet is compared to a hand since the feet is supporting your whole body weight at all times standing. then, there's the shaolin monk's "iron body". their whole body is tough as metal, not just their shins. so, that means muay thai no use to shaolin monks. wrestling take-downs no use. you can't get near a shaolin monk.

      This is true ... unless you are checking the legs of a professional Thai Fighter who has trained for years kicking trees and lumber. Checking a kick with a raised knee works because it hurts the legs of the average kicker and breaks his timing. Now imagine checking a baseball bat with your knee, and everytime you did, the dude swings faster and harder... if you watch these matches, you can clearly see all the fighters were elite... the difference was the toughness of the tools.

      @mikeodonovan9299 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@fishing4happiness610 You are correct. I learnt that in a Muay Thai camp in Thailand many years ago. It was fine checking leg kicks against someone of same ability, but against a Thai who had trained since the age of 4, and their legs were so conditioned. Of course, when they kicked they were so relaxed, like swinging an axe. And when they combined with feints to take your supporting leg out....I truly believe that all martial artists, like Karate, Tai Kwon Do etc should cross train in boxing, Muay thai etc. It is important to have eaten a few punches, so when it really happens, there is no shock factor, or turning away reflex.

    Hello everyone. The 3rd fight is also on TH-cam, the one with Benny Uriquidez. Some things were interesting about that fight. First, that match lasted nine rounds, and it was well fought, but seemed relatively even matched. Second, I thought the throws were a reaction to the low kicks, but Benny was using some of them early in the match. Third, Benny didn’t use them as often, but at one point he was throwing his own low kicks, knocking the Thai fighter down with one of them. I was also seeing some Muay Thai style clinching, and the occasional knee thrown. Didn’t see any elbows, however. Four, there must have been a lot of Thais in the audience, because you could hear the cheers every time the Thai fighter threw a kick. The Thai fighter did connect near the end with a kick to the head that knocked Benny down, and the video ended shortly afterwards, so I didn’t see if there was more to the fight or if the riot happened soon afterwards.

      The thai people are not exactly known for their physical strength. It is a country where a significant percentage of men identify as part woman. The reason they may do well is because in their boredom and desperation resulting from living in squalor they wreck their bodies since childhood and develop a care free fighting style that sometimes is strong enough to overcome superior technique and intelligence. The american kickboxer most likely has a life apart from the sport and does not pick fights right after a concussion like they do in Thailand. With that said I have a lot of respect for the olympic boxers of Thailand who have often done well in the olympics competing in the toughest martial sport of them all, which is boxing. Those who suck in boxing can find consolidation in a large number of far more obscure fighting arts like thai boxing and kickboxing as the level of competition is far lower.

    KB Strategy: Similar to boxing, lots of positioning, combos, try to avoid kicks if possible, deflect if not possible. MT Strategy: Kick his legs until they don't work anymore. I always love these videos, the MT guys are always sharks in the ring. The are so determined, so solid, they seemingly shrug off most hits. And then they just relentlessly pursue their opponent around the ring.

    Fantastic video, as always. Great, historic footage I've never seen before in two of those cases. It's a trip seeing the dude fighters call "Coach Wink" in fairly reverential terms get taken apart by low kicks like that. Kind of like watching early Bas Rutten in Pancrase, before he had a submission game - the evolution of a fantastic fighter starts in a pretty unassuming way, sometimes.
    Thanks for all the superb content. I'd love to see you do some analysis on more Dutch kickboxing, or some similarly in-depth MMA fight and striking analysis. That said, seeing the Thai fighters that I wouldn't really know about otherwise is pretty neat, too.

    • @SAagreedSA
      @SAagreedSA 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! I look forward to it.
      I noticed toward the end of the legendary low kick fight that Rick was trying to counter by spinning into a backfist. I was impressed by his creativity and I can kind of see what he was trying to do, but it really tells you just how out of the blue the Muay Thai fighting style's more well-rounded striking must have been. He had no idea, no clue at all how he might try to defend that, and his offensively-oriented thinking could only come up with "try to hit him back somehow, if he's spinning you around turn it into a punch!" - like a more sophisticated version of a dude getting low kicked for the first time deciding to try to just low kick back.
      It must take a great deal of work to be able to effectively check low-kicks. Not something even a great fighter like Rick could invent, spur of the moment, clearly. I have never seen a fighter in any promotion, under any rules, discover mid-fight how to check leg kicks correctly - if the offensive leg kicker gets five or six off into one leg, that seems to be enough cumulative damage to rob movement effectively. I'm kind of surprised leg kicks aren't more prominent, given how effective they are. Riskier than punches, I guess, it's pretty easy to punish a naked leg kick if the kicker isn't extremely fast?

    • @LawrenceKenshin
      @LawrenceKenshin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SAagreedSA Yes indeed, these type of historic matches have made the low-kick defence and low-kick ready stance one of the first things learned in KB/American MT/MMA
      Urquidez was able to last and check some kicks, and he tried to kick back to meet leg checks and he admitted that hurt like hell. Spinning around off a low kick is risky, but one that Uriah hall does in sparring (the spinning heel hook kick) off being low-kicked. for most fighters it only takes a few good ones to maim them.
      in MMA, fighters don't spend nearly as much time conditioning their shins, but also they need to sit down heavier to prevent takedowns, hence why less low kicks and less leg checks

    Brutal. I think this shows that the Thai fighters simply condition themselves way more than the Kickboxers do. If the kickboxers were to condition their legs to withstand constant low kick impacts they'd be able to win in a match of kickboxing rules.
    It goes without saying though that with Thai clinches, elbows, knees etc the kickboxers would suffer brutal beatings.
