This poem was given to me by my mother when I graduated 5th grade. I didnt understand it then, but as I got older and began to understand the words and the meaning of the poem, I've tried to live my life by the words of this poem. It has been the one constant source of inspiration all my life. I've passed this poem down to my 2 sons, with the hope that one day it will help them as much as it has helped me.
@@JohnVKaravitis...for some reason that poem hit me like a ton of bricks during my idealistic youth. And 43 years later it still does. I gave it to both my sons when they graduated high school.

@@soslothful it probably depends on the situation and who is using the term and what manner they are directing it towards you. If they mean it in a friendly fashion it is different than when they are being condescending 👍
@@BeKindandNice Perhaps. In my experience it is always spoken from with an air on superiority and belittlement. Can more stupidity be spoken? These greetings are given to by and to adults in their 50s! Were I to say something so inane, so utterly vacuous I'd pray for my tongue to rot out of my mouth!
I learned about this poem two years ago, and I told my father about it. He told me exactly this. I believe there is a lesson to be learned from it. Imagine being a father and writing such a powerful poem, scraping up what you've learned to give direction to your son... only for it to become so suddenly insignificant. It fucking breaks my heart.
But in those last moments, if these words were not spoken, could he have met death so well? Death comes for us all. Some run a long race and some run a short race. It isn't about how long the race is but how you run it. I like to think that this helped his son face the life he was given. His words do not lose their meaning because his son's race was short.

@@voices4oppressed... Hi... The phrase that I highlighted is, in my own opinion, the most profound in the whole "poem". Such as the best virtue... Humility/modesty.
@@ginasilva1862 oh yes obviously! It's natural in humans to admire and love the humble... to see a person of so much power but walk so humble, or to see a king helping a lowly peasant, or a lowly small person standing against a tyrant ruler or a famously skilled warrior sacrificing himself to save an innocent. These are what humans deemed most worthy in the heart... To do noble deeds beyond the courage of the ordinary man!

I had to memorize this poem when I misbehaved in class as a kid in elementary school. I was sent out of class for timeout and I was told I can't come back in till I had it memorized and can recite it in front of the class. Never forgot it since and I have had it hung up in my office for every job I have held for the past 20+yrs. It is an all time favorite.
My favorite poem, I read this in the 8th grade. Been with me ever since”If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs”. This comes to me in situations in life, keeps me level along with the confidence of having the Lord Jesus Christ with me, making the journey much easier.
You are a wise man already. The Lord is with you and if anyone or everyone can’t get deep enough to comfort your soul, He will be right there. That is how I was able to undoubtedly know his Incalculable love for Us all.
"And blaming it on you" has always been something I get hung up on. I've always had the tendency to believe people when they say there's something wrong with me, but I'm getting better about that.
Your father raised you to be the person you are now. They have done enough whatever they can they did it. Never ever demand more from people who have already done for you. Repay them back and live a happy life. That is what we all deserve. 😊
Forgive and rejoice. Most in this world live spiritually at lower levels of consciousness with increasingly few living at the next higher level. Perhaps roughly 20% of fathers would think to share such a poem with their son. Kipling's work is written at a high level of consciousness, probably beyond reason to love.
I read this poem a few days ago under the influence of Italo Marsili. Well, today I'm 25 years old and I am a Brazilian man. Therefore, just like most men in this country, I didn't have father for influence my personality or character. But I have values that my mom and my relatives gave me. I consider this poem one of the greatest poems ever and a roadmap to life. My advice to young men is: Work, serve, be strong and don't piss off. God bless your week, month, year and life. Be strong. Be grateful.
Greetings from NYC. I like the "road map to life " statement. In the end, Character is all that matters if one cares about their human legacy. Be good, Do good and hurt no one while living your best life (perhaps not as eloquent as Mr Kipling, Lol). Gratitude in all things big and small, humility, and benevolence. I wish you Joao Perdro, all good things.

Almost in tears, this poem reminds me of a very special high school teacher of mine. Mr Petty recited it so eloquently, it was put in our year book, beside his picture, and t was read at his funeral as well 🥰🥰
This is the most amazing and humble poem I’ve ever heard., No room for bragging, blaming, impatience, lying, hating, self doubting, and learning how to start all over again if failed. Not affecting yourself during good or bad times. Treating all the person equally. Having the same virtue regardless of the underlying situation. So much to learn !!
Wow! I thought I grasped most of it. Believe it or not, I just discovered this poem yesterday! What a masterpiece!! BEAUTIFUL! Your commentary helped me so much more! If you can fill an unforgiving minute with 60 seconds distance run. That took a minute... for me to get. (PUN INTENDED). 🥴
I can bear to hear this poem forever I can recite it for my son who still unborn I can hear him speak with my grandkids How he became a man because of its revealing.
This poem needs to roar in every junior high and high school in America. Manhood is not something to repress, but something to shape for the good of society.
My Father (he died this year) gave me a plaque with this poem etched on it when I was still a child. I have carried it with me through the years and love it as much today as I did when I first read it.
I think we may have waited too long. The under 40 people are too occupied with righteousness, shaming, cancelling, threatening, towards others and expecting the gentlest of behavior towards themselves. Call me cynical but theres nothing of quality in them. You couldnt pound the meaning of this beautiful poem into them. Their loss.
My favorite poem. I realize it's from father to son but when my grandfather passed I sent it to my Mom and it helped her immensely. For more than a year she did everything in her power to help him be as comfortable as possible. Her brothers were a disgrace and did nothing to help even though she was far less favored by her father. It took immense strength and I was so proud of her.
The ones that give the most are often the exploited ones. Parents do play favorites. My three brothers were and are a disgrace also. Sorry about your loss.
We listened to this in class today and I feel in love with it I’m not a poem person but this is art, this is beauty. Truly. Now all I do is listen to it when I feel a certain way I cannot explain but so express inside myself. This is truly a great poem along with his history of lovely poems.
Gentleman.....To be a good man is hard, but, not impossible. It is worth the work. And worth the effort it takes. There are men who jump out of my memories. And I so loved and respected them. They are gone now, and I am old. But they are NEVER FORGOTTEN.
This is one of my favorite poems too. Reminds me how everything in life is a test of character although it can be so overwhelming. The most powerful word although the smallest is 'if'.

Kipling wrote the poem in 1910 as a father's wish for his 12 year old son. 5 years later his only son died during WWI.
I learned about this poem two years ago, and I told my father about it. He told me exactly this. I believe there is a lesson to be learned from it. But in those last moments, if these words were not spoken, could he have met death so well?
Death comes for us all. Some run a long race and some run a short race. It isn't about how long the race is but how you run it. I like to think that this helped his son face the life he was given. His words do not lose their meaning because his son's race was short.

THE GREATEST POEM EVER WRITTEN!!!!!!!
IF
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!"

I used to be young, selfish, and at the time it seemed like it would be so easy to quit for him. “He just needs to use his will power” I thought. Forgive and rejoice. Most in this world live spiritually at lower levels of consciousness with increasingly few living at the next higher level. It takes terrible loss and heartache to understand this poem.
This piece of art of living shall be heard over and over again, learnt by heart. Oh, poetry...what a gift to all of us, it keeps our Spirit alive, like a prayer.
I listen to this every morning at 5:30 am on my way to the gym and it never fails to give me goosebumps
Never tire of listening to, or reading, this poem.
These lines reminds me of my english teacher..he taught me this beautiful poetry as life lesson ..and this is the only thing which I believe and I learn to never quit the battle of life💟💟💟
If this poem can replace the almost 2 decades we spend in schools learning, our perspective of life would have been way much wiser in a relatively shorter time
Absolute Truth.
I have had this poem hanging in my home for 30years now , it's my favorite by Kipling.
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise"
I consider this poem by Kipling to be a high gift late in life. Maybe useful earlier, but at this age I understand/appreciate the truth of it. Thank you for the upload.
If ourselves have A life change storyline.
Sentence of a poem.
A storyteller.
Purplish heart
I once recited this on Philosophy back in 2018. Now in 2022, this hits so different when all your life you only have your IFs and you just realized.
This poem lifted me from lowest points in these past 5 years so many times.
If only each one of us could imbibe and inculcate even one line of this remarkable poem our world would be a great and better one.
I had to memorize this in eighth grade and I'm so glad I did.
“Did you know that IF is the middle word in LIFE, man?”
What was that, Dennis Hopper in uneasy rider? Oh wait... Apocalypse Now! I think
chauncey gardener You got it, apocalypse now!
edit: I love your handle btw. Being There is a masterpiece, and Peter Sellers is a genius.
@@dethkon Thank you, sir. You are the first to recognize it
@@dethkon Peter Sellers said that of all the characters he had and could play, Chauncey Gardener what actually him!
E. G. Verlander Makes Sense. Peter Sellers was an incredibly... complicated man (I wish there was a better term), from what I’ve heard. And also a genius.
Obviously, he often claimed that he didn’t actually exist- no sense of self at all- much like Chance, he could only experience “himself” through Television media.
It's not always about men, it's about, outstanding ladies,who gave me there way
We studied this poem in 8th grade. Never thought it has such a deep meaning.
A LEGENDARY POEM BY A LEGENDARY POET ❤
Too deep for 8th graders
My whole senior class had to memorize this and during our graduation had to say the whole thing. Probably the only thing from senior year in 1995 I learned inside the walls of the school I remember today in 2020.
Some times words travel through time...that's the magic. How words so simple but put together so eloquently, can create a passage for those seeking answers to this crazy world. These words hit so deep and during unprecedented times, just ups the power of his words. ❤
This is a beautiful physiolophy that helps you learn self-control and how to be a better person
