It is just as cynical and arrogant, as the critic, to claim that another person will never know, or has not known victory nor defeat. I think it's fair to argue that every person knows defeat and has, in whatever way they have been able, to dare greatly. Dismissing someone else's triumphs and tragedies as neither true defeat, nor daring greatly, is ironically an extremely cynical, dismissive and arrogant point of view.

You gotta make bad decisions to appreciate the good ones, the trick is to make the bad decisions on purpose so to try and control the fallout. You don't want to make the bad decisions when you can't control the fallout, like walking up on your home burning to the ground. You might want to do yourself the favor and take the high road that time. If you never allow yourself to build up to your breaking point it might just take you by surprise when you least expect it. It might be a good idea to try it on some simple shit a time or two before it really counts. If you remove your right arm you would no longer have a left, you would just have one. So too with up and down, daytime and nighttime, right and wrong, in and out, sunshine and rain, celebration and suffering, win and lose. Living without morals is crazy but you couldn't celebrate a grand slam if you could do it with your eyes closed and you just couldn't miss. There is no such thing as forgiveness, we pay as we go; however, there is no need to assess an accident still in progress.

I failed RASP my first time. I failed ranger school 3 times. My body was not ready. My mind was not ready. I took my vengeance on both those schools, 5 years later. I devoted myself to finding the way, and found my solace in sweat, I am now an E5 in ranger battalion, because I failed, over and over again, I stumbled towards my goal, clumsily and poorly. Where are these speeches today? This is a speech intended to inspire the masses to greatness; not to divide the people, not to help an unworthy politician hold onto office. This is a speech about others, not about himself. We need more of this. We need it now.

He would be swarmed on twitter in an attempt to cancel him for calling out precisely the cancellers and armchair critics. Then they would proclaim that this speech was showing his privilege, and quite possibly that it was a patriarchal attempt to maintain the status quo. I cherished that Certificate more than any other award which I had received during my life; more than any trophies or plaques. Because of the WORDS that were on the Certificate. I memorized those WORDS, and I've spoken them many times in order to motivate, and inspire others.

However, I think I get the gist. I assume that you are aware of my faith; That's, my convictions, my BELIEF, and my conversion. I'm 53. I'll be 54 in another month or two. One year later ... Released, and free to try anything, I moved to Montana. Another year later, after various attempts & failures, I moved back to N.Y., and N.J., and I began a LONG hard road of quasi repentance, but serious in depth Study of the Holy Bible.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of people who share my perception of Biblical Doctrine, but they are few and scattered abroad, and some right here; We are Gods Remnant.

One of the things that differs in my view of Gods teaching from most Christians is that although many of God's teachings are ABSOLUTE, there are also MANY Dichotomies in Scripture that people would prefer to make into a SINGLE Generalization that applies to EVERYONE ALL THE TIME. That's a problem with NOT having Spiritual eyes to see that Gods ETERNAL, INFINITE MIND is ABOVE and BEYOND our finite thinking.
I believe EVERYONE needs to accept or reject THIS crucial statement made by my Lord and Savior: John 14:6, "Jesus said to him,
I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me."
God is Love. 1st John 4:8, and 4:16
And He(Jesus Christ) is the Lover of my SOUL, and by His HOLY SPIRIT my spirit is QUICKENED (made ALIVE).
This is the meaning of "Born Again." He "IS," my first LOVE. 1st John 4:19
I'm still a work in progress, but I'm a far cry from where I used to be.

A great man with an incredible story. He was a man that inspired men then, inspires men now and will continue to inspire men. He was shot before he was supposed to give a speach and he still deliver his message, talking for 90 minutes after the shooting. Young men need examples to look up to and this man is one of them.

I copied every word. This validates how I’ve lived my life. I’m 85 and have survived many a quake and crash. Studied the book of JOB for fifty years, eventually in Hebrew. Got integrity, can travel.

I remeber the first time I heard this I cried like a baby, tears just streaming down my face, it made me realize that if I didn't at least try to do better in my life and risk failure I would never grow, failure is apart of growth. I truly wish I could've met teddy, if only to shake his hand.

In a time when black people could not safely be free, some men held slaves to protect them and not out of a deficit of respect/character. It was a sad, awful time; people of color were safer as property than as free people. Not every slave owner was a monster who thought slavery was right and black people were inferior. George Washington, though known as a bit of a bully within the military apparatus, was said to be extremely well thought of by his slaves and servants. I expect he was the sort of man who had no patience for arrogant men, a man who tended to look out for the less fortunate. Consider that he was enemy #1 to the British crown, not just guilty of treason but of leading an army of men to do the same. Usually it takes someone who thinks in terms of ideals, and who thinks of others, to risk so much on just a small chance of winning against what was at that time the greatest military power in the world.

I'm reasonably sure that if George Washington saw how far we have come, he would smile. He would not be upset that slavery is illegal and that people of every ethnicity are named equal. He would be proud to stand beside Obama. I'm not sure whether he'd be quick to abandon the sexist views of his time, but I expect he is the sort to see the parallels and come around to modern thinking. But we don't have the luxury to know for sure. We can only know what was said of him in the time he lived, and those were good things.

If you are looking for someone to dislike, I might suggest Andrew Jackson. He was not such a great guy, and he spent most of his presidency trying to grossly exceed his authority in ways that would make us all cringe with ethical dismay/disgust. In the contest for "worst president we've ever had", the list of contenders is short but he's actually probably the favorite (despite our recent political history; AJ was that awful).

I read most of his books and writings and I came yo admire this man called Theodore Roosevelt. Not because he was president; I know the least about his times as President. I got to know him during all his endeavors out West and all around the world. He lived, traveled and bedded down in jungles with the lowly and uneducated yet treated them not much different then those he had daily dealings with in Washington. He was a humble man and never expected more than was due to the rest of his fellow travelers. In the jungles of South America as in Africa he took his turn hunting for meat when rations ran low and shared precious water with his carriers while suffering the greatest hardship with constant threat to his life! He never asked for privilege even in the face of death. He fought in the jungles of Cuba and stayed with the last of his man if need be. He could stay on his horse an entire day and he often did when cattle was rounded up nd moved north from his ranch out west! He did the job of an able cow man and had the respect of all the tough wild men in cattle country long time ago. He roped cattle, transported cattle and slept with the rest of the cowboys with his head on his saddle under the starts, often under great hardship! Yet, how many Americans know much about this man who was one of our Presidents?
I have been pounding (figuratively) this into my oldest grandson (10) who is so gifted, but has a fear of failure or being mocked, so when we talk on the phone or in person I always ask. Are you still in the game or have you moved to the seats in the bleachers? Finer motivational words have never been spoken than the man in the arena.
Be patient. Don't give up. It might be years before your words take a holt.
But, sink in they will........

The use of A.I in every aspect of our lives. The future is golden and it will have unimaginable prosperity.
When we can experience such great quality content anytime, anywhere and any device and to know its gonna get more accessible and widespread in decades to come. What's upon us is unthinkable.

@@markyuto6820 yea..our reliance on technology will lessen our overall ability...im amazed by my tribes historical hunters, men of the past had to know how to build a hut, do carpentry, go farming, know about plants, the cycle of the sun and moon to determine what time of the year it is, and so on....we have increased knowledge in general/ useless facts, info or in our particular line of work..but no real understanding of the world and our surrroundings, nature etc..intellectuals, good engineers, scientists, doctors have become more intelligent..but apart from that, the common man might have become less wise

This reminds me of the man who was potentially the greatest baseball player who ever lived. He never struck out, he never missed a fly ball, he never had a ground ball get past him, and he never made a bad throw. The only thing that kept him out of the Hall of Fame was nobody could get him to put his beer down and come play.

I've carried a printed version of this speech with me for 30 years now. I look at it daily. It has served me WELL. When ever I doubted if I should DO something or complain about something, I reminded myself to "GET IN THE RING, MFer!" I'm now unbelievably successful (in a "George Bailey" kind of way) and I owe a lot of it to this message from Teddy.
This is the best speech I have heard. I love how it’s calm but stern and strong in its delivery. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. I play it whenever I need motivation to just keep going.

I was hiking up Mt. Sugarloaf with my brother and dad, and while climbing up the steepest part, I remembered this speech especially when my face was, "Marred by dust, and sweat, and blood." I made it to the top, and now I am more motivated to exercise :)

What a great historical speech from which all of us can learn still today! Somtimes life can be hard and unjust, but if we don't "step into the arena" and take up the fight against the obstacles we cannot win. It's always worth taking up the fight, no matter how hard it might be, even if you don't know the outcome. We all can learn from hardship, which only makes us stronger if we accept it and believe in victory.
I really like these words a lot: "The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming." Whoever is reading this, I wish you lots of strength in your battle and that 2021 will lead you out of the arena as a victorious man. Never give up, the sweat and blood are not in vain.
I needed this. I'm old now and face my eminent demise . Being born poorer than most can imagine, it has been a struggle to get a foothold in life. Working hard doesn't ALWAY mean success as described by society. I look back at failure and value hope. With hope now fading I can differentiate between want and need. So many times I climbed the mountain of success to where I could see the summit and fell short. Strangely, I've resisted becoming bitter in defeat. It's not in me to enjoy being the biggest loser but I deplore self pity.

I echo Aaron Pix in suggesting you explore writing. Old is physical true, but also mental. I know because I am oldish, perhaps more than you. I published my first book at age 71 will publish books 3 & 4 this year at age 80. I have 23 more books planned.

Teddy Roosevelt was an incredible person. Few people know that his mother and his wife died on the same day yet he endured that horror and went on excelling for the rest of his life.
I memorized this speech in high school and now at 53 I still remember it word for word. Truer words have never been said and now in these trying times this speech talks to me everyday.

I recently started a new career, when I start feeling tired or hopeless I remember this. The more I struggle, the more I try, the prouder I become. I failed many times to get where I am, even if I don't make it to where I want. I can rest at night knowing I walk into the arena every day.

This excerpt of President Roosevelt’s speech at Sorbonne in Paris 23 April 1910 is masterful. A young soldier in 1989 wrote it calligraphy and gave it to me on his way to his first duty station. Every day is a day in the arena. You have to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, “did I do my best?” If the answer is no, then find out why not. Was it lack of motivation? Lack of training? Correct whatever is holding you back and try harder tomorrow. No one can be perfect. The best that you can do is high achievement. I’ve always heard it said, “practice makes perfect.” I say be careful what you practice. Because if you practice the wrong things, then you’ve perfected them. You have to keep striving for yourself, family, friends, community, and country. Never give up !!! Put God in the forefront of all you say and do !!!

This quote was on the wall of our football locker room over 50 years ago when I was in high school. It inspired me to stay in football through all four years, though I was never any better than second string. And it has inspired me through my whole life, leading me to repeatedly attempt new things - some I succeeded at, and some I did not. But it has always kept me in the arena.

This speech changed my life, like really. It brings forth all the emotions a human can feel in less than 3 minutes. Leaving you breathless and empty, full of questions and resentment... Yet it fills you with courage you never knew you had, logic to overpower the most complex situations in your life and it clears the fog thats been building up in your head.
