    You are a lifesaver! I am a 60 year old woman and was able to replace the mode door actuator in my Ford Escape by watching your video. Didn't have to dismantle the gas pedal in the Escape. I had to run back inside a couple of times to watch a part of the video again, especially how the little red locking clip went back in the plug. I now have defrost and floor air again in my car. Thank you so much!!

      That’s awesome! Kudos to you for even attempting this - let alone completing it and it working!!!
      Keep it up!

    You saved me $1200, I told the Ford dealership what was happening and that was the quote they gave me. 28 bucks and 15 mins and a neck/headache later, no more clicking. Thank you so much.

    VERY VERY helpful as many threads on you tube suggest Temperature Blend Actuator replacement which is behind the radio in the middle console, but when YOUR PROBLEM is normal air temps but only from the defrost vents and floor it is NOT the temperature BLEND Actuator but IT IS THE HVAC MODE DOOR ACTUATOR. I have a 2012 F-150 Platinum Model and it just went from fine to no air at all to the dash and rear seat console and just to the floor and defrost and that is the symptom of the failure of the AC Mode Door Actuator found on the drivers side of the console just above the accelerator pedal. I am NOT a mechanic but was able to change the MODE Door Actuator Ford YH 1818 or Dorman #604241 From Advance Autoparts for $35.00 and removed the Accelerator pedal with (3) #13mm screws and just pushed it to the side then with a small socket wrench 1/4 inch drive and and extension 4 inch (needed) I removed the actuator itself and tested it by pushing the metal rod attached up and down and replaced it and Voila...The vents all worked again including the dash and rear console which had no flow before... Thanks AKJeeper you saved me a bundle and your video was top notch and well done. Keep making them for us "common non-mechanic folks"
    By the way I took it to a dealer and made an appt. but the service manager was nice enough to tell me it was not a VACUUM line problem but likely the MODE Door Actuator so his advice helped me find this thread....

    Thank you very much!! All the research I did this had me taking out the entire dash or the center console. As soon as I saw your video I realized I’d been looking at the wrong ones.
    I ordered the part and will replace it when it gets here!!

  • @theacademyofanatomy

    Exactly what I needed! Ford gave me the wrong part and argued with me about it. Told me I'm watching too many TH-cam videos! He is not watching enough!!! Once I pulled the part it looked exactly like the one in the video. Ordered the part number you provided in the video next day from Amazon and took the wrong part back to Ford. Being a large and not very flexible guy I had a difficult time just figuring out how I was going to even see what I was doing and reach that far up under the dash. I figured it out and it works great now! Thanks!!!

    Great video! I have a 2014 FX4 with the power pedals and everything here was exactly what I needed to do. Took me around 30 minutes to complete and that was mostly just finding a way to move around the seat and upside down under the dash.

    Great video. A great help. I have a 2014 fx2. It’s not necessary to remove the gas pedal but I can see how that would make it easier. Took me around 45 minutes. Thanks for taking the time to video your work.

    My truck is a 2008 F-150 XLT and except for my gas pedal being mounted with 10mm bolts and the Mode Door Actuator assembly being held on with 3 8mm bolts, this video is spot on and i was able to replace the part in about 20 minutes with a hand ratchet. Everything is working great! Thanks for the well done video

    Dude thank you!!!! I have a 2013 F150 5.0 Supercrew. Replaced the one behind my stereo but didn't fix my issue. I always had great heat and cold air....just had the loud annoying clicking noise when switching between heat and cold air. Weeks of trying to find out if I had to pull my entire dash or not. Sounded like it was clicking up top by the windshield. Found your video and sure enough, the sound was from this actuator here. Replaced today and more clicking noise!! Thanks again. I owe you!!

    I'm so glad I found this video. I have a 2014 F150 super crew platinum. That clicking noise was driving me crazy ! I had the new part for about a month, but was dreading taking the seats and console out to get to it. All I can say is, If you don't want to spend $900 or more to have the dealership replace it . Please follow this video ! Thank you !

    Thanks. This worked great for my 2010 Expedition. Saved me a lot of money. Just one suggestion to save you time and hassle - make sure you get an OEM part. I went cheap ($20) and bought one off Amazon that said it was the right part to include the part # but it didn't fit even though it looked right. I reordered the OEM part ($38) and it popped right back in.

    Total repair cost me $27 for the part and ironically took me 27 minutes from the time I took the tools out until i put them away! It was the same process for my 2014 F150 XLT as in the video. My problem was a broken gear tooth on the old actuator that caused a clicking sound anytime I tried to change from floor vent to dash vent. Can't imagine what the dealer would have charged me for this simple repair.

    After contorting my back initially, I put a 45 quart ice chest next to my running board. Then, I was able to lay comfortably on my back, and the pedal and mode actuator was easily removed and installed.

  • @jasonsykes3200
    @jasonsykes3200 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Incredibly helpful video as I was having the same problems as was described in the video. The process was the same for my 2005 F150 Lariat and I think the only difference is that the actuator was held in place with three 8 mm screws rather than just two. If you're a person on the larger side, you may not want to eat a big meal before doing this as you have to contort your body a bit to reach those upper screws on the actuator and accelerator pedal. As someone else mentioned, having a power tool similar to the one in the video helps a lot, but you'll need the proper extensions to fit it in and reach everything.

    • @PaulPhillipsIndy
      @PaulPhillipsIndy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm not a tiny person (6'2" 275lbs) and had to lay upside down in the drivers seat with my legs in the air and head hanging upside down in the foot well. Had to take 2 breaks to let the blood back out of my head before I got the old out and new bolted back in, but the new part fixed my issues completely... Saved a ton of money! Would have been a lot easier if I could have flipped the truck upside down! LOL!

    Question - is there a way to reset the position of the module? Module cycles through, but the dash stays open (floor only) until I get to the defrost. The dash shuts off on defrost and floor. If I tap the button fast enough between defrost and floor to only floor, the dash doesn’t come on. Any thoughts?

    Great vid! But I’ve read that you need to pull the fuse for one minute, re-insert it and turn the key to On for the actuator to recalibrate. So there’s no need to recalibrate this one?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can force calibration by pulling the fuse (Fuse 15 on a 2010), or by using a scan tool. In many cases, the system will figure itself out right away.

    Thank you for this, I spent an hour and a half trying to get both hands in the small space to put the screws back on. I threw my hands up and left them half tightened and didn't know what else to do, taking the pedal off took me 2 seconds to tighten the screws.

    If your a big guy and can’t just flip yourself in, if you take the panel below the steering column off, you can see straight through to where you are working. Mine was three 7 mm screws and a tug of two clips on the left and right upper part of the panel. I did have to remove the gas pedal to get to the bolts. 2012 F150 fx2 with dual auto. Dorman 604-241.

    Can you tell the difference if its the actuator or the climate control module that has gone bad? I'm trying to fix my mother's King ranch 1 day the passenger side will blow warm and driver side cool and vice-versa. I did get under dash and i heard a clicking sound. Is there temporary bypass I can do maybe moving blend doors and keeping them open for cold. This heat is ridiculous.

    Just a quick comment, this is a bit of a challenge if you are left handed and a bit overweight like me. Still possible but can be a struggle! I didn't use power tools as none I had would fit in there, and had to lay upside down in the drivers seat with the seat laying all the way as flat as I could get it with my head hanging upside down from the drivers seat. That said, I was able to do it laying upside down like that without having to remove any panels.

I am having trouble getting the air to switch vents when I do have it on but it doesn't make since to me that I hear the noise when the AC control is off. I have a 2010 Ford f150 4x4 manual air control. Could the actuator be my problem?

  • @shanzt007
    @shanzt007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So, I just bought this f150 FX2.. when I received the truck, it had the same issue that you mentioned in the video.. the cold air is blowing through the defrost vents and the floor vents.. so I went to Oreily and got the dorman after market hvac door actuator, replaces it.. the clicking noise went away and when I pressed the top vent switch, the air started blowing through the top vent. I was very happy, to the truck for a spin.. parked at a gas station, came back and turned it back on.. the clicking noise came back and the air started blowing through the defrost and the floor vent again.. do you think it is because of the after market part or is there some other issue..

    • @AKJeeper

    Does the mode door and blend door use the same part? Because I’ve only changed the mode before (thanks to this helpful video) and AutoZone only sells the “blend door actuator” but it’s identical to the one in the video and fit my mode door just fine.

    I have an Expedition and I replaced the blower motor, the blend door actuator and with this video I fixed the mode actuator. I am a 6’4” female with broad shoulders and this was pretty difficult to get my shoulders under there, but I got it. I put everything back, knowing my AC was finally working! But I turned the key to STILL hear the clicking AND air STILL doesn’t blow out of the front vents! 😩😩 What could be happening!?!?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kacy Carlton Is the clicking coming from the actuator you just replaced? Also - I know it’s a pain in the butt...with the actuator removed, did you try moving the mode door as I explained in the video? There is a possibility that the mode door on your truck is jammed up, which is why I move the door by hand before installing the new actuator. you can turn the ignition switch to the on position and set the blower on low and double check that moving the mode door (by hand) actually changes which vents the air blows out of. If it doesn’t, you might be battling a broken mode door. Hope this makes sense?

    • @kacycarlton54
      @kacycarlton54 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AKJeeper I did move the mode door with my finger and it freely moved. So I attached the new mode actuator. I still have the stereo removed, so when I started the car, I could clearly hear the clicking coming from the blend door actuator. So I removed it again, but left it plugged in so I could see if it was able to move when I changed aspects of the AC. It moves as well, so I put it back on and started the car again...still clicking and the air won’t blow out.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kacycarlton54 One last thing. With the actuator out, put the blower on low speed and move the mode door with your finger or screwdriver and see if you can confirm that air comes out of the different vents depending on what position you have the mode door turned to. I'm just trying to confirm that you don't have a physical problem with the mode door itself. If everything seems OK there - I'd say you got a defective part (I've seen this a couple of times now - especially with the Dorman replacements). If you take apart your old actuator, you'll see that even the Motorcraft ones are built kinda cheesy - everything is plastic! The clicking you hear are the plastic gears stripping out under load.

      It depends on your truck’s configuration. If you have drivers and passenger side temperature controls, you will have an actuator for each. The mode door gets its own actuator. And the fresh air/recirc air has one too. So your truck may have either 3 or 4 actuators.

      Unfortunately, I do not. The last time I had to remove a dash on one of these 2009-2014 trucks, I was pressed for time and could not record any footage of the job. It is not the easiest of jobs, especially accessing the bolts at the top of the dash (accessed through the rectangular panels snapped in on top). It’s clear to me that the dash on these trucks must be installed before the windshield at the factory. If the windshield was out of the way when I did the last one, dash removal would have been significantly easier. The bolts are oriented vertically and are kind of deep in the hole. I used a combination of extensions and universals to access them.

    • @AKJeeper

      It could be an issue with the driver's side blend door, or the driver's side blend door actuator (which requires dashboard and HVAC box removal). My video shows replacement of the mode door actuator, which is the one that directs the air to the various vents. It does not have anything to do with temperature regulation.

With the vehicle off, pull the fuse for the climate control module (not sure which fuse it is on the 2009, but it might be #15 in the passenger side kick panel (SJB). Wait a few minutes, then reinsert the fuse. Turn the ignition switch to the on position, then turn on the climate control system. Hi - I've reviewed multiple videos from all over the internet but nothing seems to cover my exact situation. I have a 2010 F150 Lariat with a center console, navigation, dual climate control and adjustable pedals. My problem is that the passenger side vents (both upper and lower) are blowing hot air when I have the A/C on. The drivers side is blowing cold air as is the 2 vents for the back seat. In addition, the blower door controls (defrost, upper, lower) don't seem to have much effect. E.G. if I set it to defrost and lower, I still get significant air from the top vents. If I set it to upper only, I still get air from the lower (and maybe the defrost - I don't know). From what I've described, what actuator(s) do I need to be concerned with? Does it make sense that multiple actuators would fail at the same time - or is this symptomatic of something else? In any event, I'd like to fix the A/C ASAP since we are in the sweltering part of the summer (100 deg tomorrow). Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch ....
