Blue Thunder the movie was great. Blue Thunder the TV show was just B-rated fluff.
Airwolf movie & first season were great, but season 2 started decaying, and season 3 was mostly crap.
They should re-make the show and update it. Hawke's brother can be MIA in Afghanistan, and replace the older Santini with a female computer nerd.
Caitlin's character was nice, but only later on after she'd mellowed -- her initial loud southern fried version was crap.
Nobody's impressed by wireframe computer graphics fx anymore - audiences have moved on. The Knight Rider reboot failed to understand that.
They should let the helicopter have some kind of AI -- not the talking kind, but more like a predatory animal intelligence.

Omg I came from my tv to my phone to write exacly the same thing, being born in 73, I loved Blue Thunder, I might be wrong but wasn't that chopper more like a modern gunship like a Cobra or Apache, more square 😂😂😂. Blue Thunder is on Amazon Prime right now. Love the movie even though I'm sure there's all kinds of technical things wrong with it. Having worked F-16s, there's a lot wrong with those scenes, too. But who cares, it's a fun flick in a lot of parts but also pretty sobering.

Something nobody seems to mention is how awesome it was that the helicopter would growl at you randomly as if it was a living creature, barely held in control by the pilot.

It's something that doesn't really get mentioned by video makers. Commenters in comments sections may bring it up from time to time. Something this episode touched on is that the computer is effectively a learning computer, which was then expanded on by the episode Moffett's Ghost. Also, the pilot episode mentions that the computer basically corrects minor pilot errors, and regulates various functions to streamline the crew's effectiveness. The hydraulics hissing in response to Dom, and in one episode engine flame out when he insulted the copter and restarting when he apologized, further gave subtle hints that the computer did in fact have an AI. As with the occasional growls and snarls. I think that perhaps Moffett's intent with things like the growl/snarl was added phycological warfare aspects. Add the line from this very episode where Winchester recounts Moffett saying "Airwolf is a living thing. More than you'd ever know..." further supports this train of thought.

The stunt pilots who flew the lady have said that she was more maneuverable and easier to fly overall due to the cosmetic mods added to it. The low ground fly by and the fast up and downs (push-overs) the lady would do weren’t sped up as fast as you’d think they were. The turbo scenes obviously were but the way they made it look realistic at a time when CGI wasn’t available was jaw dropping.

    • @gerv55
      @gerv55 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Think it was more down to the whole back end being stripped out of the copter, all the seating in the back etc made it lose a lot of weight and made it more nimble. The cosmetic mods looked the part but i think the weight loss was the main factor that made it handle better.

The camera ship (usually a Hughes 500 or Jet Ranger) on Airwolf was flown by the late J. David Jones, who also flew the Hughes 500D in this episode (and most of the early episodes). He was the Aerial Co-Ordinator and 2nd Unit Director for 2 years on the show and was the absolute best in the industry, revered by all the young pilots on the show, and the Hollywood pilots of today (two of which, Kevin LaRosa II and Peter McKernan, Jnr are 2nd Generation stunt pilots / Aerial Co-ordinators, and their fathers flew on Airwolf). Peter McKernan, Snr and the then 23yo Peter Jnr both flew Airwolf on the series.

When you look back at this show you really start to realize how much footage actually they reused SO OFTEN and also how they moved the camera to make the helicopter appear to make a loop, which was actually the camera making a loop. And usually weapon deployment did seldom match up with the follow up view of the helicopter. In that regard they did it 'perfect' in the pilot episode "Sweet Britches" of season 2.

I don't know if it was inspired by Airwolf, but when I was a kid in the 80s there was a thing at a JC Penny's or a Foley's or something here in Texas where someone had come up with a wall that had a bunch of blinking lights and switches. So of course you throw a switch and it changes it. Even back then, I always thought that the designer did it as some kind of test, so if you figured it out and got something just right something interesting would happen. In that sense, it's kind of like some of the DEFCON badges of late (pre-pandemic). In fact, with computers being what they are now and such that might be pretty interesting. I'm channeling The Last Starfighter here, I think.

I was still learning at the time so it was a big deal. Unfortunately they had an ugly crash out in Newhall that killed a stuntman. Another great heli thing to watch... Blue Thunder. The stunt sequence they did downtown, they would never let them do in a million years today. Another good one... Capricorn One. They had some amazing choreographed scenes with two 500s in that. Amazing stunt pilots, superb cinematography and zero CGI, even the F-16s were models! You could never get away with filming anything like that in today’s ‘woke’ ‘Health and Safety’ and overly litigious world!

Blue Thunder (1983) is one of those rare 80s movies that has stood the test of time. The third act where Murphy steals Blue Thunder after Lymangood was killed just smokes, perhaps only bettered by the dressing down that Murphy gets from Capt. Braddock in the first act. And the footage of the police choppers chasing Blue Thunder through the aqueducts, man! That movie is nothing but killer scene after killer scene. The movie loses points for the inane casting of Malcolm McDowell (an upper class Brit as a US Army warrant officer who goes on to become a colonel, really?), but it still has to be one of the most complete aviation films ever.

There's a great scene though, that I think was in the first episode of season 2, where String and Dominic made a detailed inspection before powering up and taking off. Naturally they didn't show that each time, but it was nice to know that the Producers were willing to give a nod to the mechanics that kept that helicopter flying. It's also worth noting that those chain gun props when they were attached, had to be airworthy and meet FAA standards.

Man, how much that resonates with me. Yes, it's fictious, some liberty taken to "bend physics", but for a child it was just awesome. Got myself the DVD box a while ago and this brings back so many positive memories.
You have to love the effort they put into this, back when CGI wasn't a thing.😍

In the mid 80's I worked nights at a company in Culver City. We got off around 6:00am and occasionally we'd see Airwolf flying over on it's way to Universal Studios. As I understood it, they needed permits to fly with the guns deployed. They were afraid it'd scare the public.

I saw them flying one of these accelerated sequences as they filmed it. I was swimming in the lake at the family cottage and heard helicopters. Airwolf came over the trees at about 500 feet and 50 km/h. When I saw that, I recognized it as Airwolf, but thought that Airwolf would be in California, not Eastern Ontario. When I saw the Santini Air helicopter behind it, with a spherical camera mount under the nose, I realized that it really was Airwolf. It turns out they were going to an airshow in Ottawa. In post-production, they sped up the images to make a helicopter flying at 50 km/h feel like it is flying 750 km/h. Of course, that made me look like I was doing a backstroke in the lake at the speed of a racing boat. They used that footage in the third season, but I did not recognize it at first, as I had not seen my family's cottage from above before. I think they may have covered me with other parts of the lake to maintain the illusion.

My favorite episode was Season 2 Episode 1 where Caitlin is introduced. I mean. Her flying the 500 was pretty awesome in of itself. But the end had some real ballsy flying in it too. Hovering only a few feet with gear up. And more explosions of course.

Just hearing that theme song made my whole day. Airwolf, Knight Rider, A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard....what a time. Also, I doubt there is any way they could make that show today, everything would be janky CGI rather than an actual helicopter.
