  • Former F/A-18 pilot reacts to flying scenes from the 1996 documentary INDEPENDENCE DAY starring Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman. Fresh out of copyright jail, this was originally uploaded on July 4th to my Instagram (@cwlemoine) and Facebook ( cwlemoine) accounts. It just cleared content ID last week.

It was a top secret mission that John Lennon went on years earlier faking his death and killing Kurt Cobaine to go under cover in his place on a top secret mission to infiltrate the alien mothership with soothing music. After he was found and killed, the government faked Kurt's/(Lennon in disguise) suicide to cover it up. I've never seen a completely packed theater who had an audience so engaged with the feature as this movie. It was just opening night at a random cinema, nothing special other than it being the initial showing of the movie at that theater, and at the end the entire theater gave the movie a standing ovation. Something I can easily see for a good official premier with cast & whatnot attending but a standing ovation without any of the hype around cast & crew is something I never expected and have never seen since despite catching many good opening nights for other movies since then. 8:36 "...when you go fast it doesn't make it hard to breathe." I always interpreted this moment like the pilot was just beginning to have a panic attack and reflex-removed his mask - not for any intelligent reason, but just because it's an instinct that can be hard to overcome during life-threatening moments. I've had two panic attacks in my life, and in both cases I felt like I couldn't breathe. If I'd had a mask on, I might have known it was wrong but pulled it off in that moment regardless. (I'm sure training would help with this - but I'm not sure if it would, for every pilot, in every scenario, guarantee that during a panic attack they didn't do something stupid.)
Additionally, if he was pulling even a couple Gs in the pull-up, the character might have had a bit of a "holy shit" feeling in his chest that kind of caused a brief but sharp downward mental spiral at that particular time. If he'd had a moment to think, he might have been OK. Then again, he'd have still probably gotten blasted by aliens.
Anyway, I'm interested in whether or not pilots generally understand the impact that a panic attack can have one one's cognition and physical capability during high stress scenarios. One would think it would be common knowledge, but this video doesn't acknowledge this possibility. This reminds me of how PTSD (or, as it was called in the 1940s, "combat stress") was not a real phenomenon, according to Gen. Curtis LeMay, who commanded B-17s in combat over Germany from 1942-1943. (Citation: Mission With LeMay, by Curtis LeMay & McKinlay Kantor; additional citations available upon request.) It would seem that if panic attacks can affect a combat pilot's capabilities so severely, it should perhaps be a better-understood phenomenon amongst pilots.
If anyone could help me to understand this better, it would be truly appreciated.

In the book (a novel after the first film) it says, these aliens are living in the hide from an animal species that lives on their home planet. They control the tentacles of their outer body by mere force of their mind.
Later in the movie there is the scene where the president negotiates with an alien at area 51 and suffers from a choking fit or from severe headache. Triggered by this observation a security guy decides to shoot the alien through the armored glass in order to protect the president from the mental influence.
My take from all of this is, the wingman is being attacked mentally in full flight by one of the pursuers. So taking off his mask is neither from a panic attack nor by the nature of his flight maneuvers.

"Nineties had the best presidents in movies"
Yeah. My guess is that was because at the time, the office wasn't as disrespected and universally reviled as it seems to have become these days. Fun what two decades of highly polarized politics can do.

Thanks for review of my favourite movie. Whatever facts and flaws, it is still my best movie. The speech given by president before final encounter was awesome. I was just 25 then, but felt hot blood and its pressure in my body, its ecstasy. It gives the message that we will not vanish, will fight back and survive. The same we r feeling again, this time with China conflicts with us and corona. It gives us courage to fight still now. Again lot of thanks to u review this best movie of all time.

"Does that Hornet say Air Force on it? Is it Canadian?"
No. Our F/A-18's (For whatever reason they designate it CF-188 here) only have the roundel and say Canada with a small Canadian flag on it. We had other aircraft that were marked RCAF and CAF back way back when.

    • @VisibilityFoggy
      @VisibilityFoggy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They pitched the Tomcat to Canada in the same competition that resulted in the purchase of the CF-18s. It's something to think that Canada would still be flying them today, and maybe it would have even led to the U.S. keeping up development. In the end they narrowed it down to F-18 and F-16, eliminating the Tomcat, Mirage 2000, Panavia Tornado ADV and F-15. In hindsight, the F-15 would probably have been the best choice given range, interceptor ability and a development cycle that's still ongoing.

First off, Canadian Hornets do say 'RCAF' in front of the roundel. Second, nobody; I mean _nobody_ calls the CF-18 the 'CF-188' in casual conversation. Fighter pilots and crew chiefs in the RCAF call the airplane 'the CF-18' or simply, 'the F-18'. The name 'Hornet' is definitely used in conversation about the airplane (a crew chief once told me that the Hornet goes by several other unprintable/unutterable names).
As for the F-15 Eagle, it is too expensive, and is not a multirole fighter (a Canadian requirement). The F-15E lacks the F-18's agility, and who wants some WSO back-seat driving all the time?! And the Tomcat... More like Tom-Gobbler!!! Dan 'Two Dogs' Hampton considered them target practice, and so did Pete 'Boomer' Bonanni.
Source: I was a Royal Canadian Air Cadet for six years and it was in the days preceding the rabid political correctness movement. Unfortunately, the Cadet programs have been demilitarized to the point where they're little more than just another scout organization. It's too bad, really, and exceedingly disappointing.
It's off-topic, but for the record, I live in British Columbia, I _never_ say 'eh' (unless I'm mocking an easterner), and I hate hockey so much that I think it should be banned entirely and replaced with Crud. Furthermore, there is only ONE _right_ way to ride a horse, and it's WESTERN, Baby!!!
      Good hunting and check 6!

@@DJones476 I was a cadet too for a number of years as well. At the national aviation museum (before the hornet was put on exhibit). But before I made this comment I did my homework first to make sure I wasn't talking out of my ass and I checked a bunch of pictures of cf-18s and none of the ones I saw said RCAF on them at all. Just the roundel and the word Canada with the maple leaf on them.
Edit: they USED to say Canadian Forces on them. But they don't anymore. The only one with the RCAF marking on it is the demonstrator.
